RESUMO

Winery and olive mill industries generate large amounts of wastes causing important environmental problems. The main aim of this work is the evaluation of different membrane separation processes like microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis for the recovery of polyphenols from winery and olive mill wastes in aqueous solutions. Membrane processes were tested separately in a closed-loop system, and by an integration in a concentration mode sequential design (open-loop). Feed flow rate was varied from 1 to 10 mL min-1, and permeate samples were taken in order to measure the polyphenols concentration. The separation and concentration efficiency were evaluated in terms of total polyphenol content, and by polyphenols families (hydroxybenzoic acids (HB), hydroxycinnamic acids (HC), and flavonoids (F)), using high performance liquid chromatography. Results showed that MF and UF membranes removed suspended solids and colloids from the extracts. NF was useful for polyphenols separation (HB rejections were lower than for HC and F: HB rejections of 50 and 63% for lees filters and olive pomace extracts, respectively), and RO membranes were able to concentrate polyphenols streams (86 and 95% rejection from lees filters and olive pomace, respectively). Membranes sequential designs for lees filters and olive pomace extracts, using a selective membrane train composed by UF, NF and RO membranes, were able to obtain polyphenol rich streams and high-quality water streams for reuse purposes.

RESUMO

AIMS: Previous work showed that Bacillus subtilis dormant spore killing and germination by dodecylamine take place by different mechanisms. This new work aimed to optimize killing of B. subtilis and other Firmicutes spores and to determine the mechanism of the killing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Spores of seven Firmicute species were killed rapidly by dodecylamine under optimal conditions and more slowly by decylamine or tetradecylamine. The killed spores were not recovered by additions to recovery media, and some of the killed spores subsequently germinated, all indicating that dodecylamine-killed spores truly are dead. Spores of two species treated with dodecylamine were more sensitive to killing by a subsequent heat treatment, and spore killing of at least one species was faster with chemically decoated spores. The cores of dodecylamine-killed spores were stained by the nucleic acid stain propidium iodide, and dodecylamine-killed wild-type and germination-deficient spores released their stores of phosphate-containing small molecules. CONCLUSIONS: This work indicates that dodecylamine is likely a universal sporicide for Firmicute species, and it kills spores by damaging their inner membrane, with attendant loss of this membrane as a permeability barrier. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: There is a significant need for agents that can effectively kill spores of a number of Firmicute species, especially in wide area decontamination. Dodecylamine appears to be a universal sporicide with a novel mechanism of action, and this or some comparable molecule could be useful in wide area spore decontamination.

RESUMO

Polymers are ubiquitously present in our daily life because they can meet a wide range of needs and fields of applications. This success, based on an irresponsible linear consumption of plastics and the access to cheap oil, is creating serious environmental problems. Two lines of actions are needed to cope with them: to adopt a circular consumption of plastics and to produce renewable carbon-neutral monomers. This review analyses the recent advances in the chemocatalytic processes for producing biomass-derived carboxylic acids. These renewable carboxylic acids are involved in the synthesis of relevant general purpose and specialty polyesters and polyamides; some of them are currently derived from oil, while others can become surrogates of petrochemical polymers due to their excellent performance properties. Polyesters and polyamides are very suitable to be depolymerised to other valuable chemicals or to their constituent monomers, what facilitates the circular reutilisation of these monomers. Different types of carboxylic acids have been included in this review: monocarboxylic acids (like glycolic, lactic, hydroxypropanoic, methyl vinyl glycolic, methyl-4-methoxy-2-hydroxybutanoic, 2,5-dihydroxypent-3-enoic, 2,5,6-trihydroxyhex-3-enoic acids, diphenolic, acrylic and δ-amino levulinic acids), dicarboxylic acids (2,5-furandicarboxylic, maleic, succinic, adipic and terephthalic acids) and sugar acids (like gluconic and glucaric acids). The review evaluates the technology status and the advantages and drawbacks of each route in terms of feedstock, reaction pathways, catalysts and economic and environmental evaluation. The prospects and the new research that should be undertaken to overcome the main problems threatening their economic viability or the weaknesses that prevent their commercial implementation have also been underlined.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine if general anaesthesia influences the intravenous (IV) pharmacokinetics (PK) of acetaminophen in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, crossover, randomized experimental study. ANIMALS: A group of nine healthy Beagle dogs. METHODS: Acetaminophen PK were determined in conscious and anaesthetized dogs on two separate occasions. Blood samples were collected before, and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes and 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours after 20 mg kg-1 IV acetaminophen administration. Haematocrit, total proteins, albumin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea and creatinine were determined at baseline and 24 hours after acetaminophen. The anaesthetized group underwent general anaesthesia (90 minutes) for dental cleaning. After the administration of dexmedetomidine (3 µg kg-1) intramuscularly, anaesthesia was induced with propofol (2-3 mg kg-1) IV, followed by acetaminophen administration. Anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in 50% oxygen (Fe'Iso 1.3-1.5%). Dogs were mechanically ventilated. Plasma concentrations were analysed with high-performance liquid chromatography. PK analysis was undertaken using compartmental modelling. A Wilcoxon test was used to compare PK data between groups, and clinical laboratory values between groups, and before versus 24 hours after acetaminophen administration. Data are presented as median and range (p < 0.05). RESULTS: A two-compartmental model best described time-concentration profiles of acetaminophen. No significant differences were found for volume of distribution values 1.41 (0.94-3.65) and 1.72 (0.89-2.60) L kg-1, clearance values 1.52 (0.71-2.30) and 1.60 (0.91-1.78) L kg-1 hour-1 or terminal elimination half-life values 2.45 (1.45-8.71) and 3.57 (1.96-6.35) hours between conscious and anaesthetized dogs, respectively. Clinical laboratory variables were within normal range. No adverse effects were recorded. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: IV acetaminophen PK in healthy Beagle dogs were unaffected by general anaesthesia under the study conditions. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the PK in different clinical contexts.

RESUMO

Inactivation of Bacillales and Clostridiales spores is of interest, since some cause food spoilage and human diseases. A recent publication (mSphere 3: e00597-1, 2018) reported that glycerol monolaurate (GML) in a non-aqueous gel (GMLg) effectively killed spores of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Clostridioides difficile, and Bacillus anthracis spores to a lesser extent. We now show that (i) the B. subtilis spores prepared as in the prior work were impure; (ii) if spore viability was measured by diluting spores 1/10 in GMLg, serially diluting incubations 10-fold and spotting aliquots on recovery plates, there was no colony formation from the 1/10 to 1/1000 dilutions due to GMLg carryover, although thorough ethanol washes of incubated spores eliminated this problem and (iii) GMLg did not kill highly purified spores of B. subtilis, B. cereus, Bacillus megaterium and C. difficile in 3-20 h in the conditions used in the recent publication. GMLg also gave no killing of crude B. subtilis spores prepared as in the recent publication in 5 h but gave ~1·5 log killing at 24 h. Thus, GMLg does not appear to be an effective sporicide, although the gel likely inhibits spore germination and could kill spores somewhat upon long incubations. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Given potential deleterious effects of spores of Bacillales and Clostridiales, there is an ongoing interest in new ways of spore killing. A recent paper (mSphere 3: e00597-1, 2018) reported that glycerol monolaurate (GML) in a non-aqueous gel (GMLg) effectively killed spores of many species. We now find that (i) the Bacillus subtilis spores prepared as in the previous report were impure and (ii) GMLg gave no killing of purified spores of Bacillales and Clostridiales species in ≤5 h under the published conditions. Thus, GMLg is not an effective sporicide, though may prevent spore germination or kill germinated spores.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine if acute opioid tolerance (AOT) or opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) could develop and limit the remifentanil-induced reduction in the sevoflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MAC). The response to mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) was evaluated and related to OIH. STUDY DESIGN: A crossover, randomized, experimental animal study. ANIMALS: A total of nine Beagle dogs. METHODS: The dogs were anaesthetized with sevoflurane in 50% oxygen. Baseline sevoflurane MAC was measured (MACb1). Remifentanil (0.3 µg kg-1 minute-1) or 0.9% saline constant rate infusion (CRI) was administered intravenously (IV). Sevoflurane MAC was determined 20 minutes after CRI was initiated (MACpostdrug1), 30 minutes after MACpostdrug1 determination (MACpostdrug2) and after 1 week (MACb2). The MNT was determined at baseline (before anaesthesia), 3 and 7 days after anaesthesia. An increase of MACpostdrug2 ≥0.25% compared to MACpostdrug1 was considered evidence of AOT. A decrease in MNT at 3 and 7 days or an increase in MACb2 or both with respect to MACb1 were considered evidence of OIH. RESULTS: Remifentanil CRI reduced sevoflurane MACpostdrug1 by 43.7% with respect to MACb1. MACpostdrug2 was no different from MACpostdrug1 with the saline (p = 0.62) or remifentanil (p = 0.78) treatments. No significant differences were observed in the saline (p = 0.99) or remifentanil (p = 0.99) treatments between MACb1 and MACb2, or for MNT values between baseline, 3 and 7 days. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In dogs, under the study conditions, remifentanil efficacy in reducing sevoflurane MAC did not diminish in the short term, suggesting remifentanil did not induce AOT. Hyperalgesia was not detected 3 or 7 days after the administration of remifentanil. Contrary to data from humans and rodents, development of AOT or OIH in dogs is not supported by the findings of this study.

RESUMO

The dual control model (DCM) postulates the involvement of relatively independent inhibitory and excitatory systems, which together provide a "double control" over sexual response and associated behavior (Janssen & Bancroft, 2007). Based on this model, the Sexual Inhibition and Sexual Excitation Scales assess the propensity for sexual excitation and sexual inhibition. This research focused on analyzing some psychometric properties of this questionnaire and developing a Spanish version in men. The sample consisted of 823 heterosexual men of ages ranging from 18 to 74 years. Confirmatory factor analysis generated a version of the scale that consisted of 34 items (11 items with the worst factor loadings were eliminated) distributed in four factors (one sexual excitation factor and three sexual inhibition factors). This is consistent with the DCM of sexual response. The four factors demonstrated good reliability coefficients except for sexual inhibition due to the threat of performance consequences, which was found to have a low internal consistency. Consequently, this is something that will be addressed in future studies. The four factors were found to have good test-retest reliability. The measures of the Sexual Inhibition and Sexual Excitation Scales had good validity properties and a coherent relationship with sexual sensation seeking and erotophilia.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to validate the Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale (SSSS; Kalichman, 2011) in Spanish samples. Two independent studies were conducted. In Study 1, we examined the factor structure of the SSSS in a sample of 1,272 heterosexual undergraduate students (40.0% men, 60.0% women). Results revealed a 2-factor structure. Factor 1 was related to physical sexual sensations and risky sexual behaviors and Factor 2 was related to exploratory or novel sex. A confirmatory factor analysis confirmed this factor structure in a sample of 373 community adults (33.8% men, 66.2% women). Two items were deleted, resulting in a final version composed of 8 items. This version showed good test-retest reliability and evidence of its concurrent validity. In Study 2, the factor structure was further confirmed in a sample of 1,596 university students (28.8% men, 71.2% women). More evidence of construct validity was provided, which revealed that higher levels of sexual sensation seeking were associated with more frequent sexual risk behaviors and poorer sexual health. Internal consistency reliability did not reach acceptable levels on all of the subscales. Results suggest that, although it has been used before, this scale needs a revision before its use in Spanish-speaking contexts.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The starting dose for narrowband UV-B phototherapy is determined by a patient's skin phototype or minimal erythema dose (MED). Calculation of MED identifies patients with unsuspected photosensitivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of factors such as concomitant use of photosensitizing agents, diagnosis, and combination with acitretin in patients with psoriasis on the frequency and severity of adverse effects in patients with a low MED to narrowband UV-B phototherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective observational cohort study between February 1, 2009 and March 31, 2015. MED values were classified as normal or low. RESULTS: In total, 302 patients with different skin conditions started narrowband UV-B phototherapy at a dose determined by their MED. No differences were found between patients with a low MED and those with a normal MED for number of drugs taken (P=.071) or use of photosensitizing agents (P=0.806). Following adjustment for age, sex, and phototype, the multivariate analysis showed that psoriasis exerted a protective effect against a low MED (OR=0.31 [95% CI, 0.16-0.58]). No significant risk of erythema or pruritus was detected in patients with a low MED (OR=1.68; 95% CI, 0.91-3.29 and OR=2.04; 95% CI, 0.99-4.22, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Psoriasis protects against a low MED. Although erythema and pruritus were more common in patients with a low MED, the differences were not significant.

RESUMO

We present a high-throughput confirmatory method for the analysis of 11 nitroimidazoles in muscle samples (metronidazole, MNZ; dimetridazole, DMZ; ronidazole, RNZ; tinidazole, TNZ; carnidazole, CRZ; secnidazole semihydrate, SCZ; ornidazole, ORZ; metronidazole-hydroxy, MNZ-OH; ipronidazole, IPZ; ipronidazole-hydroxy, IPZ-OH; and dimetridazole-hydroxy, HMMNI). Extraction with acetonitrile is efficient and simple, with the majority of recoveries ranging between 65 and 101%, and without the need for clean-up of the extracts. The chromatographic analysis is performed using UPLC-QqQ-MS in the MRM mode, with an electrospray source operated in positive mode. Total chromatographic analysis time is 12 min. This method has been fully validated in muscle according to Decision 657/2002/CE guidelines, and the CCα values obtained were in the range of 0.04-0.4 µg·kg(-1). The method is currently used for the analysis of muscle samples and has been tested in other matrices of animal origin, such as kidney, retina and egg, with excellent results.

RESUMO

Thiazides are widely used diuretics that first became available in the 1950s. The first reports of photosensitivity reactions to thiazides were published shortly after the introduction of these drugs, but few cases have been described since. We review all the cases of photosensitivity due to thiazides published up to December 2011. We found 62 cases, 33 in women and 29 in men. The most common presentation was eczematous lesions in a photodistributed pattern, and the most common causative agent was hydrochlorothiazide. The results of photobiological studies were published in only some of the cases reviewed. In most cases, phototesting revealed an abnormal response to UV-A alone or to both UV-A and UV-B. In some cases, the results of phototesting were normal and only photopatch testing yielded abnormal results. Diagnosis of photosensitivity due to thiazides requires a high degree of suspicion. Ideally, diagnosis should be confirmed by a photobiological study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phototesting is a technique that assesses the skin's sensitivity to UV radiation by determining the smallest dose of radiation capable of inducing erythema (minimal erythema dose [MED]) and anomalous responses to UV-A radiation. No phototesting protocol guidelines have been published to date. METHODOLOGY: This was a multicenter prospective cohort study in which 232 healthy volunteers were recruited at 9 hospitals. Phototests were carried out with solar simulators or fluorescent broadband UV-B lamps. Each individual received a total of 5 or 6 incremental doses of erythemal radiation and 4 doses of UV-A radiation. The results were read at 24hours. RESULTS: At hospitals where solar simulators were used, the mean (SD) MED values were 23 (8), 28 (4), 35 (4), and 51 (6) mJ/cm(2) for skin phototypes i to iv, respectively. At hospitals where broadband UV-B lamps were used, these values were 28 (5), 32 (3), and 34 (5) mJ/cm(2) for phototypes ii to iv, respectively. MED values lower than 7, 19, 27, and 38 mJ/cm(2) obtained with solar simulators were considered to indicate a pathologic response for phototypes I to IV, respectively. MED values lower than 18, 24, and 24mJ/cm(2) obtained with broadband UV-B lamps were considered to indicate a pathologic response for phototypes ii to iv, respectively. No anomalous responses were observed at UV-A radiation doses of up to 20J/cm(2). CONCLUSIONS: Results were homogeneous across centers, making it possible to standardize diagnostic phototesting for the various skin phototypes and establish threshold doses that define anomalous responses to UV radiation.

RESUMO

An analytical method for determination and confirmation of nine coccidiostatics in eggs is reported. Ethyl acetate is used as extraction solvent, with satisfactory results, and simple automated clean-up is based on gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) . The target compounds are then analysed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated in-house in accordance with Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. Trueness and precision were determined at four concentrations, and the mean errors obtained were <10 %, with relative standard deviations ranging from 3 to 18 %. For three non-authorized coccidiostatics (clopidol, ethopabate, and ronizadole), decision limit and detection capability were in the ranges 0.12-0.16 and 0.18-0.23 µg kg(-1), respectively. The results obtained prove the suitability of this new analytical method for routine monitoring of these substances in eggs.

RESUMO

Although the existence of photodistributed erythema multiforme has been recognized for years, few cases have been described to date. It is an uncommon, and probably underdiagnosed, skin disorder that can affect individuals of both sexes and all ages. It has been associated with drugs, reactivation of herpes simplex virus infection, and polymorphous light eruption. A diagnosis is made on the basis of history, physical examination, histology, and phototesting. The condition runs a benign, self-limiting course but patients may experience outbreaks for several years if the causative agent is not eliminated. It is treated symptomatically and patients are advised to avoid triggers and excessive sun exposure.

RESUMO

This study aimed to determine the performance of the averaged parasympathetic tone activity (PTAm) and its dynamic variation (ΔPTA) to assess intraoperative nociception in relation to heart rate (HR) and direct mean arterial pressure (MAP) in dogs undergoing laparoscopic ovariectomy. This prospective, observational, clinical study included 32 bitches. The PTAm, HR, MAP, and bispectral index (BIS) were assessed before (pre-stimulus), as well as 1 min and 2 min after, four surgical stimuli: insufflation, introduction of trocars, and removal of the left and right ovaries. A two-way ANOVA was performed to compare PTAm, HR, MAP, and BIS data across surgical stimuli. A ≥ 20% drop in PTAm or a ≥ 20% increase in HR and/or MAP regarding the pre-stimulus values was considered a PTAm-drop and/or a hemodynamic response, respectively. The performance of PTAm pre-stimulus, PTAm 1 min, and ΔPTA in predicting the hemodynamic response was assessed by calculation of the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. At insufflation, PTAm decreased after 1 (p = 0.010) and 2 (p = 0.045)min, and ΔPTA was different (p = 0.005) between dogs that presented hemodynamic response and dogs that did not. At PTAm-drop, MAP increased after 1 min (p = 0.001) and 2 min (p = 0.001) with respect to pre-stimulus value, whereas HR and BIS did not change. ROC curves showed a threshold value of PTAm pre-stimulus ≤51 to detect hemodynamic response (sensitivity 69%, specificity 52%). The PTAm and ΔPTA only assessed intraoperative nociception during insufflation. The PTAm pre-stimulus association to the hemodynamic response in anaesthetized dogs showed poor sensitivity and no specificity.

RESUMO

Granuloma annulare (GA) is a benign granulomatous skin disease with several clinical manifestations and characteristic histological findings. GA located in photoexposed areas is a rare finding and its association to a drug-induced systemic photosensitivity is even less common. To the best of our knowledge, only one case of systemic drug photosensitivity manifesting as a GA has been reported. We describe a patient with systemic photosensitivity to paroxetine with clinical and histological manifestations of GA, which was confirmed by the photobiological study. The phototest revealed a reduction of the minimal erythematous dose for UVB while taking the paroxetine and its normalization after its withdrawal, which was accompanied by the clinical resolution of the skin eruption. The manifestation of systemic drug photosensitivity as a GA like in our case is exceptional.

RESUMO

Acidic mine Drainage (AMD) is still considered one of the greatest mining sustainability challenges due to the large volumes of wastes generated and the high associated treatment cost. New regulation initiatives on sustainable development, circular economy and the need for strategic elements as Rare Earth Elements (REE) may overcome the traditional research initiatives directed to developing low cost treatment options and to develop research initiatives to identify the potential benefit of considering such AMD as a potential secondary resource. As an example, this study develops the integration of a three-stage process where REE are selectively separated from base metals (e.g. Fe, Al, Mn, Ca, Mg, Cd, Pb) and then concentrate to produce a rich REE by-product recovered as REE-phosphates. Selective separation of Fe (>99%) was achieved by total oxidation to Fe(III) and subsequent precipitation as schwertmannite at pH 3,6 ± 0.2. REE were then extracted from AMD using a sulfonic ion-exchange resin to produce concentrated REE sulfuric solutions up to 0.25 gREE/L. In a final stage selective separation of REE from Al(III), Ca(II) and Mg(II) and transitions elements (Cu, Zn, Ni) was achieved by precipitation with phosphate solutions under optimized pH control and total phosphate concentration. XRD analysis identified low-crystalline minerals. By using a thermal treatment the presence of PrPO4(s) and Cheralite (CePO4(s)) where Ce is substituted by La and Ca and Xenotime (YPO4(s)) were found as main minerals AlPO4(s) Ca,MgYPO4(s) were also identified.

RESUMO

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity can modify cardiovascular parameters in response to nociceptive stimuli or drugs in anesthetized animals. The aim of this study was to determine if a surgical nociceptive stimulus and morphine, ketamine, and dobutamine administration would modify ANS activity observed as a change in the mean parasympathetic tone activity (PTAm) in anesthetized horses. In 20 anesthetized horses, heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and PTAm were monitored before and 1, 3, and 5 min after surgical incision, and before and 10 min after the administration of morphine (0.2 mg/kg IV). If nystagmus or spontaneous ventilation was observed, ketamine (0.5 mg/kg IV) was given, and the three variables were registered before and 3 and 5 min afterward. If MAP reached ≤62 mmHg, a dobutamine infusion was administered, and the three variables were recorded before and 5 min after starting/increasing the infusion (0.25 µg/kg/min IV every 5 min). The three variables were registered before and 1, 3, and 5 min after a PTAm decrease of ≥20%, HR increase of ≥10%, or MAP increase of ≥20%. The PTAm decreased 3 min after the administration of ketamine and 1 min after a PTA event. The surgical incision, dobutamine, and morphine did not modify PTAm. The absence of changes in ANS activity after the nociceptive stimulus and lack of correlation between PTAm and HR or MAP suggest that PTAm is a poor indicator of sympathetic activation under the study conditions. Ketamine seems to affect ANS activity by decreasing PTAm.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To define a septic shock experimental model that can be used in for training in the early management of septic shock, specifically by extracorporeal depuration (ECD). DESIGN: A case-control experimental study. SETTING: Veterinary university hospital. SUBJECTS: Ten Beagle dogs (weight 12-15kg). INTERVENTIONS: Shock was induced using 1mg/kg Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) diluted in 20 mL saline infused in 10 minutes, with a subsequent follow-up at 6 hours. There was no intervention in 5 animals in order to define the natural course of the shock and 5 underwent high volume hemofiltration (HVHF, 100mL/kg/h) to define delay in response to treatment. VARIABLES: Pressures (arterial and pulmonary), hemodynamic parameters, gastric tonometry and respiratory function were recorded. RESULTS: The LPS effect was evidenced at 2 minutes of the infusion and the 10 animals showed severe shock at the end of the infusion. At 2-hours, changes between treated and non-treated animals were seen in cardiac output, systolic volume variability and mucous CO(2). Mean arterial pressure was significantly different at four hours. All non-treated subjects died during the 6-hour follow-up and all the treated animals survived for this period. Based on these results, we developed a workshop that has been used in five courses (www.ccmijesususon.com - www.crrtcordoba.com.es/), obtaining the previous results. CONCLUSIONS: Our shock model shows a predictable behavior, very short latency and a sufficiently rapid improvement in the treated animals for it to be applied in training workshops. It is useful for training in the high-volume hemofiltration (HVHF) and can be used for training in the early management of septic shock.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Valid and reliable data regarding sepsis is lacking in Colombia. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of the microorganisms in the main infections treated in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in our country. METHODS: This is a sub-study of a prospective cohort with 10 general hospitals in Colombia during a 6-month period. The inclusion criteria were hospitalization in ICU and confirmation of infection according to the CDC definitions. Patients were classified into three groups, that is, community, hospital and intensive care, according to the site where the infection was acquired. RESULTS: A total of 826 patients were included in this analysis. Of these, 51% developed infections in the community, 5.33% in the hospital and 43.7% in intensive care unit. Overall, the most common diagnoses were pneumonia (29.54%), intra-abdominal infection (18.16%) and urinary tract infection (11.62%). The most frequent germ in community-acquired infections was E. coli -lung (16. 4%), peritoneum (57.7%), urine (55.5%), blood (22.4%)-. E. coli -peritoneum (29.3%), urine (52.9%)- also predominated in the ICU-acquired infections, except for lung and blood in which Staphylococcus aureus (32.4%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (15.7%) were the most prevalent. Cultures were requested from 655 patients, 40% of them having received antibiotics before cultures were taken, although this did not affected the percentages of positive cultures (P=0.583). CONCLUSIONS: Pneumonia was the main cause of infection regardless of the site of acquisition. E. coli was the most prevalent germ, except in the pulmonary infections acquired in UCI in which S. aureus was the most prevalent.
