The molecular doping (MD) process is based on the deposition of dopant-containing molecules over the surface of a semiconductor substrate, followed by the thermal diffusion step. Previous studies suggest that, during the deposition, the molecules nucleate clusters, and at prolonged deposition times, they grow into self-assembled layers on the sample to be doped. Little is known about the influence of nucleation kinetics on the final properties of these layers and how they change when we modify the solution properties. In this work, we examine the nucleation rate and the molecular surface coverage kinetics of diethyl-propyl phosphonate on silicon at different solution concentrations and how these conditions influence the final electrical properties of the doped samples. We present a high-resolution morphological characterization of the as-deposited molecules together with the electrical results of the final doped samples. The experimental results show a non-obvious behavior, explained through understanding of the competition between the molecules' physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms. As a consequence, due to the deeper knowledge of the deposition phase, a finer tuning of the conductive properties of MD-doped samples is achieved.

Pelvic radiation disease (PRD), a frequent side effect in patients with abdominal/pelvic cancers treated with radiotherapy, remains an unmet medical need. Currently available preclinical models have limited applications for the investigation of PRD pathogenesis and possible therapeutic strategies. In order to select the most effective irradiation protocol for PRD induction in mice, we evaluated the efficacy of three different locally and fractionated X-ray exposures. Using the selected protocol (10 Gy/day × 4 days), we assessed PRD through tissue (number and length of colon crypts) and molecular (expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, cell damage, inflammation, and stem cell markers) analyses at short (3 h or 3 days after X-ray) and long (38 days after X-rays) post-irradiation times. The results show that a primary damage response in term of apoptosis, inflammation, and surrogate markers of oxidative stress was found, thus determining a consequent impairment of cell crypts differentiation and proliferation as well as a local inflammation and a bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes after several weeks post-irradiation. Changes were also found in microbiota composition, particularly in the relative abundance of dominant phyla, related families, and in alpha diversity indices, as an indication of dysbiotic conditions induced by irradiation. Fecal markers of intestinal inflammation, measured during the experimental timeline, identified lactoferrin, along with elastase, as useful non-invasive tools to monitor disease progression. Thus, our preclinical model may be useful to develop new therapeutic strategies for PRD treatment.

BACKGROUND: "FODMAPs" (fermentable-oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols) are a group of fermentable carbohydrates and polyols largely diffused in food products. Despite their beneficial effects as prebiotics, people affected by irritable bowel syndrome manifest symptoms when eating these carbohydrates. A low-FODMAP diet seems to be the only possible therapy proposed for symptom management. Bakery products are a common source of FODMAPs, whose pattern and total amount can be affected by their processing. This work aims at studying some of the technological parameters that can influence the FODMAPs pattern in bakery products during the production process. METHODS: high-performance anion exchange chromatography coupled to a pulsed amperometric detector (HPAEC-PAD) was used as a highly selective system for carbohydrates evaluation analyses on flours, doughs, and crackers. These analyses were performed using two different columns, the CarboPac PA200 and CarboPac PA1, which are selective for oligosaccharide and simple sugar separation, respectively. RESULTS: emmer and hemp flours were selected to prepare doughs as they contained low oligosaccharide content. Two different mixes of ferments were used at different times of fermentation to evaluate the best conditions to achieve low-FODMAP crackers. CONCLUSION: the proposed approach allows carbohydrate evaluation during crackers processing and permits the selection of opportune conditions to obtain low-FODMAP products.

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is crucial for improving patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to compare the positive predictive value (PPV) of the echocardiography-derived tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/systolic pulmonary artery pressure (TAPSE/sPAP) ratio with that of the DETECT algorithm for PAH screening in a cohort of SSc patients. METHODS: Fifty-one SSc patients were screened for PAH using the DETECT algorithm and echocardiography. RESULTS: Echocardiography was recommended by the DETECT algorithm step 1 in 34 patients (66.7%). Right heart catheterization (RHC) was recommended by the DETECT algorithm step 2 in 16 patients (31.4%). PAH was confirmed by RHC in 5 patients. The DETECT algorithm PPV was 31.3%. The TAPSE/sPAP ratio was higher in SSc patients not referred for RHC than in SSc patients referred for RHC according to the DETECT algorithm step 2 [0.83 (0.35-1.40) mm/mmHg vs 0.74 (0.12-1.09) mm/mmHg, P < 0.05]. Using a cut-off of 0.60 mm/mmHg, 8 (15.7%) SSc patients had a TAPSE/sPAP ratio of ≤0.60 mm/mmHg. PAH was confirmed by RHC in 5 patients. The PPV of TAPSE/sPAP was 62.5%. In multiple regression analysis, TAPSE/sPAP was associated with age [ß coefficient = -0.348 (95% CI: -0.011, -0.003); P < 0.01], DETECT algorithm step 1 [ß coefficient = 1.023 (95% CI: 0.006, 0.024); P < 0.01] and DETECT algorithm step 2 (ß coefficient = -1.758 [95% CI: -0.059, -0.021]; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: In SSc patients with a DETECT algorithm step 2 total score of >35, the TAPSE/sPAP ratio can be used to further select patients requiring RHC to confirm PAH diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of the Campania Oncology Network (ROC) was to reduce cancer delay and care fragmentation through the establishment of cancer-specific multidisciplinary oncologic groups (GOMs) and diagnostic and therapeutic assistance paths (PDTAs). METHODS: Five cancer centres of the ROC, with their own cancer specific GOM, were selected. In our analysis, we have focused on four neoplasms: lung, colon, ovarian and prostate cancers. The median time for pre-GOM and GOM Times was calculated for each tumour site. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to individuate risk factors for pre-GOM and GOM Time. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed for prostate cancer compared to other patients either for pre-GOM or GOM Times. Significant risks were found for ovarian and prostate cancers in pre-GOM time and for prostate cancer in GOM-Time. CONCLUSIONS: This experience will produce knowledge and data to guide decision-making and to manage more effectively the challenges of fighting cancer in Campania region. The Valutazione Percorso Rete Oncologica Campana (ValPeROC) study evaluates, for the first time, the ROC activity, through the analysis of key performance indices. Pre-GOM and GOM Time represent the quality of the entire regional health system and are useful to define models, which can evaluate the performance of the ROC over time.

This study reports on the green and cost-efficient synthesis of gold nanoparticles from three different red algae extracts. The nanoparticles synthesized were fully characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, HRTEM, and Z-potential. Relevant components occurring in the extracts, such as polysaccharides or phenolic content, were assessed by analytical techniques such as spectrophotometric assays and liquid chromatography. Finally, the antioxidant, antitumoral, and anti-inflammatory potential of both the extracts and the gold nanoparticles synthesized were analyzed in order to determine a possible synergistic effect on the nanoparticles. The results obtained confirmed the obtainment of gold nanoparticles with significant potential as immunotherapeutic agents. The therapeutic potential of these nanoparticles could be higher than that of inert gold nanoparticles loaded with bioactive molecules since the former would allow for higher accumulation into the targeted tissue.

Cancer still poses a global threat, since a lot of tumors remain untreatable despite all the available chemotherapeutic drugs, whose side effects, it must also be noted, still raise concerns. The antitumoral properties of marine seaweeds make them a potential source of new, less toxic, and more active antitumoral agents. Furthermore, these natural extracts can be combined with nanotechnology to increase their efficacy and improve targeting. In this work, a Codium tomentosum (CT) aqueous extract was employed for the green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au@CT). The complete characterization of Au@CT was performed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Zeta potential, electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high-performance steric exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), and by the determination of their antioxidant capacity. The antiproliferative activity of Au@CT was then tested in hepatic (HEPG-2) and pancreatic (BxPC-3) cell lines. Their potential capacity as enhancers of gemcitabine, a drug frequently used to treat both types of tumors, was also tested. The activity of Au@CT was compared to the activity of the CT extract alone. A synergistic effect with gemcitabine was proven for HEPG-2. Our results showed that gold nanoparticles synthesized from seaweed extracts with antitumoral activity could be a good gemcitabine enhancer.

Cu nanoparticles were produced by using solid-state dewetting (dry) of a 1.3 nm Cu layer or laser ablation of a Cu solid target (wet) in acetone and methanol. The morphology and chemical composition of the nanoparticles were investigated as a function of the synthesis methods and their key parameters of the annealing temperature (200-500 °C) and the liquid environment during the ablation. Cu nanoparticles were then embedded in transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films as aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) or zirconium-doped indium oxide (IZrO); the TCObott/Cu nanoparticle/TCOtop structures were synthesized with all combinations of AZO and IZrO as the top and bottom layers. The goal was to achieve a plasmonic and conductive structure for photovoltaic applications via a comparison of the involved methods and all fabricated structures. In particular, solid-state dewetting produced faceted or spherical (depending on the annealing temperature) nanoparticles with an average size below 150 nm while laser ablation produced spherical nanoparticles below 250 nm. Dry and wet plasmonic conductive structures as a function of the TCOs employed and the temperature of annealing could reach a sheet resistance of 86 Ω/sq. The energy band-gap Egap, absorbance, transmittance, and reflectance of the plasmonic conductive structures were investigated in the UV-vis-NIR range. They showed a dependence on the sequence of the top and bottom TCO, with best transmittances of 89.4% for the dry plasmonic conductive structure and 84.7% for the wet plasmonic conductive structure. The latter showed a higher diffused transmittance of between 10-20% in the visible range.

Glucose electrochemical sensors based on nanostructures of CuO/Cu(OH)2onto graphene paper were prepared by thermal (solid) and nanosecond pulsed laser (molten phase) dewetting of a CuO layer 6 nm thin deposited by sputtering. Dewetted systems, obtained without the use of any binder, act as array of nanoelectrodes. Solid state and molten phase dewetting produce nanostructures of copper oxide-hydroxide with different average size, shape and surface composition. Molten phase dewetting originates particles with size below 100 nm, while solid state dewetting produces particles with average size of about 200 nm. Moreover, molten phase dewetting produce drop-shaped nanostructures, conversely nanostructures derived from solid state dewetting are multifaceted. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization revealed that the surface of nanostructures is formed by a copper(II) species CuO and Cu(OH)2. Shape of anodic branch of the cyclic voltammograms of glucose in alkali solution evidenced a convergent diffusion mechanism. Analytical performances in amperometric mode are as good as or better than other sensors based on copper oxide. Amperometric detection of glucose was done at potential as low as 0.4 V versus saturated calomel electrode by both types of electrodes. Linear range from 50µM to 10 mM, sensitivity ranging from 7 to 43µA cm-2mM-1and detection limit of 7µM was obtained. Good analytical performances were obtained by laser dewetted electrodes with a low copper content up to 1.2 by atoms percentage of the surface. Analytical performance of the proposed electrodes is compliant for the determination of glucose both in blood serum, saliva or tear.

Given the epidemiologic increase of aged population in the world, aortic stenosis (AS) represents now the most common valvular heart disease in industrialized countries. It is a very challenging disease, representing an important cause of morbidity, hospitalization and death in the elderly population. It is widely recognized that AS is the result of a very complex active process, driven by inflammation and involving multifactorial pathological mechanisms promoting valvular calcification and valvular bone deposition. Several evidence suggest that epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), the visceral fat depot of the heart, represents a direct source of cytokines and could mediate the deleterious effects of systemic inflammation on the myocardium. Importantly, obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with chronic systemic inflammation leading to a significant increase of EAT amount and to a pro-inflammatory phenotypic shift of this fat depot. It has been hypothesized that the EAT inflammatory state can influence the structure and function of the heart, thus contributing to the pathogenesis of several cardiac diseases, including calcific AS. The current review will discuss the recently discovered mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of AS, with particular attention to the role of inflammation, metabolic risk factors and pro-fibrotic and pro-osteogenic signal pathways promoting the onset and progression of the disease. Moreover, it will be explored the potential role of EAT in the AS pathophysiology.

PURPOSE: Obesity and insulin resistance have been associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer (BC). The present prospective study aimed to investigate the impact of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on early BC (eBC) patients' outcome. METHODS: MetS was defined by the presence of 3 to 5 of the following components: waist circumference > 88 cm, blood pressure ≥ 130/≥ 85 mmHg, serum levels of triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL, high density lipoprotein < 50 mg/dL and fasting glucose ≥ 110 mg/dL. Seven hundred and seventeen patients with data on ≥ 4 MetS components at BC diagnosis were enrolled. Study population was divided into two groups: patients with < 3 (non-MetS) vs. ≥ 3 components (MetS). Categorical variables were analyzed by Chi-square test and survival data by log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS: Overall, 544 (75.9%) and 173 (24.1%) women were categorized as non-MetS and MetS, respectively. MetS patients were more likely to be older, postmenopausal, and insulin-resistant compared to non-MetS patients (p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, MetS patients had a numerically higher risk of relapse [disease-free survival (DFS), hazard ratio (HR) 1.51, p = 0.07] and a significantly higher risk of death compared to non-MetS patients [overall survival (OS), HR 3.01, p < 0.0001; breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS), HR 3.16, p = 0.001]. Additionally, patients with 1 to 2 components of MetS had an increased risk of dying compared to patients with 0 components (OS, HR 4.90, p = 0.01; BCSS, HR 6.07, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: MetS correlated with poor outcome in eBC patients. Among patients without full criteria for MetS diagnosis, the presence of 1 or 2 components of the syndrome may predict for worse survival.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Echocardiography is a promising technique for the assessment of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). Increased EAT thickness is associated with different cardiac diseases, including; coronary artery disease (CAD). Since several different echocardiographic approaches have been proposed to measure EAT, the identification of a standardized method is needed. We propose the assessment of EAT maximal thickness at the Rindfleisch fold, the reproducibility of this measurement and its correlation with EAT thickness and volume assessed at cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Finally, we will test the predictive role of this measurement on the presence of significant CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 1061 patients undergoing echocardiography, EAT thickness was measured at the level of the Rindfleisch fold. In 70 patients, we tested the relationship between echo-EAT thickness and EAT thickness and volume assessed at CMR. In 499 patients with suspected CAD, undergoing coronary artery angiography, we tested the predictive value of EAT on the presence of significant CAD. Echo-EAT thickness measurements had an excellent reliability as indicated by the inter-observer (ICC:0.97; 95% C.I. 0.96 to 0.98) and intra-observer (ICC:0.99; 95% C.I. 0.98 to 0.99) reliability rates. Echo-EAT thickness significantly correlated with CMR-EAT thickness and volume (p < 0.001). An EAT thickness value >10 mm discriminated patients with significant CAD at coronary angiography (p < 0.001). At multivariable analysis, including demographic data and cardiovascular risk factors, EAT thickness was an independent predictor of significant CAD and showed an additive predictive value over common atherosclerotic risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Echocardiographic assessment of EAT thickness at the level of the Rindfleisch fold represents a simple and trustworthy method. An increased EAT thickness shows an additive predictive value on CAD over common atherosclerotic risk factors, thus suggesting its potential clinical use for CAD risk stratification.

: The authors read the article "The importance of registries in the postmarketing surveillance of surgical meshes" by Kockerling et al, and they completely agree on the role of a clinical follow-up of surgical meshes even if they suggest that a surveillance longer than one year is advisable, particularly in IPOM repair, to collect not only late complications but also more serious adverse events. This seems be the only way to properly assess the safety of the mesh.

The intestinal microbiota might contribute to enteropathy associated with use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but there have been few human studies of this association. We performed a placebo-controlled study to determine whether a delayed-release antibiotic formulation (rifaximin-extended intestinal release [EIR]) prevents the development of intestinal lesions in subjects taking daily NSAIDs. Sixty healthy volunteers (median age, 26 y; 42% female) were given the NSAID diclofenac (75 mg twice daily) plus omeprazole (20 mg once daily), and either rifaximin-EIR (400 mg) or placebo, twice daily for 14 days. Subjects were assessed by videocapsule endoscopy at baseline and after 2 weeks of treatment. The primary end point was the proportion of subjects developing at least 1 small-bowel mucosal break at week 2. Secondary end points were the change in the mean number of mucosal lesions and the number of subjects with large erosions and/or ulcers after 14 days of exposure. We detected mucosal breaks in 20% of subjects given rifaximin and in 43% of subjects given placebo (P = .05 in the post hoc sensitivity analysis). None of the subjects in the rifaximin group developed large lesions, compared with 9 subjects in the placebo group (P < .001). Our findings indicate that intestinal bacteria contribute to the development of NSAID-associated enteropathy in human beings. Clinical trial no: EudraCT 2013-000730-36.

RATIONALE: It has been reported that epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) may affect myocardial autonomic function. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between EAT and cardiac sympathetic nerve activity in patients with heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 110 patients with systolic heart failure, we evaluated the correlation between echocardiographic EAT thickness and cardiac adrenergic nerve activity assessed by (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine ((123)I-MIBG). The predictive value of EAT thickness on cardiac sympathetic denervation ((123)I-MIBG early and late heart:mediastinum ratio and single-photon emission computed tomography total defect score) was tested in a multivariate analysis. Furthermore, catecholamine levels, catecholamine biosynthetic enzymes, and sympathetic nerve fibers were measured in EAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies obtained from patients with heart failure who underwent cardiac surgery. EAT thickness correlated with (123)I-MIBG early and late heart:mediastinum ratio and single-photon emission computed tomography total defect score, but not with left ventricular ejection fraction. Moreover, EAT resulted as an independent predictor of (123)I-MIBG early and late heart:mediastinum ratio and single-photon emission computed tomography total defect score and showed a significant additive predictive value on (123)I-MIBG planar and single-photon emission computed tomography results over demographic and clinical data. Although no differences were found in sympathetic innervation between EAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue, EAT showed an enhanced adrenergic activity demonstrated by the increased catecholamine levels and expression of catecholamine biosynthetic enzymes. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first evidence of a direct correlation between increased EAT thickness and cardiac sympathetic denervation in heart failure.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of unindicated CT phases and the resultant excess of absorbed radiation doses to the uterus and ovaries in women of reproductive age who have undergone CT for non-traumatic abdomino-pelvic emergencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all abdomino-pelvic CT examinations in women of reproductive age (40 years or less), between 1 June 2012 and 31 January 2015. We evaluated the appropriateness of each CT phase on the basis of clinical indications, according to ACR appropriateness criteria and evidence-based data from the literature. The doses to uterus and ovaries for each phase were calculated with the CTEXPO software, taking into consideration the size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) after measuring the size of every single patient. RESULTS: The final cohort was composed of 76 female patients with an average age of 30 (from 19 to 40 years). In total, 197 CT phases were performed with an average of 2.6 phases per patient. Out of these, 93 (47%) were unindicated with an average of 1.2 inappropriate phases per patient. Unindicated scans were most frequent for appendicitis and unlocalized abdominal pain. The excesses of mean radiation doses to the uterus and ovaries due to unindicated phases were, respectively, of 38 and 33 mSv per patient. CONCLUSION: In our experience, unindicated additional CT phases were numerous with a significant excess radiation dose without an associated clinical benefit. This excess of radiation could have been avoided by widespread adoption of the ACR appropriateness criteria and evidence-based data from the literature.

In mammals, a master clock is located within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, a region that receives input from the retina that is transmitted by the retinohypothalamic tract. The SCN controls the nocturnal synthesis of melatonin by the pineal gland that can influence the activity of the clock's genes and be involved in the inhibition of cancer development. On the other hand, in the literature, some papers highlight that artificial light exposure at night (LAN)-induced circadian disruptions promote cancer. In the present review, we summarize the potential mechanisms by which LAN-evoked disruption of the nocturnal increase in melatonin synthesis counteracts its preventive action on human cancer development and progression. In detail, we discuss: (i) the Warburg effect related to tumor metabolism modification; (ii) genomic instability associated with L1 activity; and (iii) regulation of immunity, including regulatory T cell (Treg) regulation and activity. A better understanding of these processes could significantly contribute to new treatment and prevention strategies against hormone-related cancer types.

We investigated if contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) may differentiate community acquired pneumonia (CAP) from lung cancer (LC). Among 1374 patients admitted in a 5-year period for lung opacities, 728 (329 CAP and 399 LC) were investigated by CEUS, comparing the time of appearance, disappearance, duration and pattern of distribution of contrast enhancement (CE). The patients with CAP and LC did not differ in terms of age, time of CE appearance, disappearance and duration or CE distribution. Our data show that the timing and pattern of CE detected by chest CEUS does not distinguish between CAP and LC and overly optimistic beliefs on this matter should be abandoned.

BACKGROUND: While dietary factors have been shown to play an important etiologic role in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), little is known about the association between inflammatory properties of diet and NHL risk. METHODS: We explored the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and NHL risk in a multicenter Italian case-control study conducted between 1999 and 2014. Cases were 536 subjects with incident, histologically confirmed NHL from three areas in Italy. Controls were 984 subjects admitted to the same network of hospitals as the cases for acute, nonmalignant conditions, unrelated to diet. DII scores were computed based on 30 nutrients and food items assessed using a reproducible and validated 78-item food-frequency questionnaire. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated through logistic regression models adjusting for age, total energy intake, and other recognized confounding factors. RESULTS: Subjects in the highest quartile of DII scores (i.e., with the most pro-inflammatory diets) had a higher risk of NHL compared with subjects in the lowest quartile (i.e., with the most anti-inflammatory diets) (ORQuartile4vs1 1.61, 95% confidence interval CI 1.07-2.43; p-trend = 0.01). Stratified analyses produced stronger associations between DII and NHL among males (ORQuartile4vs1 2.14; 95% CI 1.25-3.67) with significant heterogeneity (p value = 0.02); when analyzed by histologic subtype, a significant association was observed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (ORQuartile4vs1 1.84; 95% CI 1.09-3.10). CONCLUSION: A pro-inflammatory diet, as indicated by higher DII scores, is associated with elevated odds of NHL, especially among males.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have provided limited support to the association between tobacco smoking and lymphomas with weak evidence of a dose-response relationship. METHODS: We investigated the relationship between tobacco smoking and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and Hodgkin lymphomas (HL) through logistic regression spline models. Data were derived from an Italian hospital-based case-control study (1999-2014), which enrolled 571 NHLs, 188 HLs, and 1004 cancer-free controls. Smoking habits and other lifestyle factors were assessed through a validated questionnaire. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Compared to never smokers, people smoking ≥15 cigarettes/day showed increased risks of both NHL (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.97) and HL (OR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.25, 4.87); the risk was particularly elevated for follicular NHL (OR = 2.43; 95% CI:1.31-4.51) and mixed cellularity HL (OR = 5.60, 95% CI: 1.31, 23.97). No excess risk emerged for former smokers or people smoking <15 cigarettes/day. Spline analyses showed a positive dose-response relationship with significant increases in NHL and HL risks starting from 15 and 21 cigarettes/day, respectively, with the most evident effects for follicular NHL and mixed cellularity HL. Smoking duration was significantly associated with the HL risk only (OR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.16, 3.99). CONCLUSIONS: These findings support a role of tobacco smoking in the etiology of both NHL and HL, providing evidence of a direct association of risk with smoking intensity.
