Parent-child dysfunctional interactions (PCDI) are known to contribute to children's weight status. However, the underlying mechanisms in how dysfunctional interactions between parent and child influence child weight are not clear. This study investigates the impact of PCDI on toddlers' weight, focusing on the potential serial mediation by maternal emotional feeding and child appetite traits. We conducted a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from a larger intervention trial to prevent childhood obesity in low-income Hispanic families. A total of 241 mother-child dyads were included in these analyses. Measurements were taken at various stages: PCDI at child age 19 months, maternal emotional feeding at 28 months, and both child appetite traits and weight-for-age z-score (WFAz) at 36 months. Serial mediation analyses revealed a significant indirect effect of early PCDI on later child WFAz through maternal emotional feeding and two child food approach traits (food responsiveness, emotional overeating) out of the eight child appetite traits assessed. PCDI at 19 months was associated with increased use of emotional feeding in mothers at 28 months, which was associated with heightened food responsiveness and emotional overeating in children at 36 months, which in turn was linked to greater child WFAz at 36 months. The findings of this study expand the understanding of the mechanisms underlying PCDI and child weight, emphasizing the interplay between maternal feeding practices and child appetite in the context of adverse parent-child interactions during early childhood.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Infant weight patterns predict subsequent weight outcomes. Rapid infant weight gain, defined as a >0.67 increase in weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) between two time points in infancy, increases obesity risk. Higher oxidative stress, an imbalance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen species, has been associated with low birthweight and paradoxically also with later obesity. We hypothesized that prenatal oxidative stress may also be associated with rapid infant weight gain, an early weight pattern associated with future obesity. METHODS: Within the NYU Children's Health and Environment Study prospective pregnancy cohort, we analyzed associations between prenatal lipid, protein, and DNA urinary oxidative stress biomarkers and infant weight data. Primary outcome was rapid infant weight gain (>0.67 increase in WAZ) between birth and later infancy at the 8 or 12 month visit. Secondary outcomes included: very rapid weight gain (>1.34 increase in WAZ), low (<2500 g) or high (≥4000 g) birthweight, and low (< -1 WAZ) or high (>1 WAZ) 12 month weight. RESULTS: Pregnant participants consented to the postnatal study (n = 541); 425 participants had weight data both at birth and in later infancy. In an adjusted binary model, prenatal 8-iso-PGF2α, a lipid oxidative stress biomarker, was associated with rapid infant weight gain (aOR 1.44; 95% CI: 1.16, 1.78, p = 0.001). In a multinomial model using ≤0.67 change in WAZ as a reference group, 8-iso-PGF2α was associated with rapid infant weight gain (defined as >0.67 but ≤1.34 WAZ; aOR 1.57, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.05, p = 0.001) and very rapid infant weight gain (defined as >1.34 WAZ; aOR 1.33; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.72, p < 0.05) Secondary analyses detected associations between 8-iso-PGF2α and low birthweight outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: We found an association between 8-iso-PGF2α, a lipid prenatal oxidative stress biomarker, and rapid infant weight gain, expanding our understanding of the developmental origins of obesity and cardiometabolic disease.

This study evaluated the collateral, or unanticipated, impacts of Smart Beginnings (SB), a two-site, tiered intervention designed to promote responsive parenting and school readiness, on breastfeeding intensity in a low-income sample. Impact analyses for the SB intervention were conducted using an intent-to-treat design leveraging a two-arm random assignment structure. Mothers assigned to the SB intervention group were more than three times more likely to give breastmilk as the only milk source at infant age 6 months than mothers assigned to the control group at one site, an effect not evident at the other study site. As development and growth are the two most salient domains of child health, understanding how interventions impact subsequent parenting practices across both domains is critical to address long-term economic and racial/ethnic disparities. Implications of the findings are discussed for improving the efficacy of interventions based on paediatric primary care.

Infants born with low or high ("at-risk") birthweights are at greater risk of adverse health outcomes across the life course. Our objective was to examine whether geographic hotspots of low and high birthweight prevalence in New York City had different patterns of neighborhood risk factors. We performed census tract-level geospatial clustering analyses using (1) birthweight prevalence and maternal residential address from an all-payer claims database and (2) domains of neighborhood risk factors (socioeconomic and food environment) from national and local datasets. We then used logistic regression analysis to identify specific neighborhood risk factors associated with low and high birthweight hotspots. This study examined 2088 census tracts representing 419,025 infants. We found almost no overlap (1.5%) between low and high birthweight hotspots. The majority of low birthweight hotspots (87.2%) overlapped with a socioeconomic risk factor and 95.7% overlapped with a food environment risk factor. Half of high birthweight hotspots (50.0%) overlapped with a socioeconomic risk factor and 48.8% overlapped with a food environment risk factor. Low birthweight hotspots were associated with high prevalence of excessive housing cost, unemployment, and poor food environment. High birthweight hotspots were associated with high prevalence of uninsured persons and convenience stores. Programs and policies that aim to prevent disparities in infant birthweight should examine the broader context by which hotspots of at-risk birthweight overlap with neighborhood risk factors. Multi-level strategies that include the neighborhood context are needed to address prenatal pathways leading to low and high birthweight outcomes.

Child obesity is widely prevalent, and general pediatricians play an important role in identifying and caring for patients with obesity. Appropriate evaluation and treatment require an understanding of the complex etiology of child obesity, its intergenerational transmission, and its epidemiologic trends, including racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities. The American Academy of Pediatrics has published screening, evaluation, and treatment guidelines based on the best available evidence. However, gaps in evidence remain, and implementation of evidence-based recommendations can be challenging. It is important to review optimal care in both the primary care and multidisciplinary weight management settings. This allows for timely evaluation and appropriate referrals, with the pediatrician playing a key role in advocating for patients at higher risk. There is also a role for larger-scale prevention and policy measures that would not only aid pediatricians in managing obesity but greatly benefit child health on a population scale.

Plant pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, oomycetes and nematodes, rely on wide range of virulent effectors delivered into host cells to suppress plant immunity. Although phytobacterial effectors have been intensively investigated, little is known about the function of effectors of plant-parasitic nematodes, such as Globodera pallida, a cyst nematode responsible for vast losses in the potato and tomato industries. Here, we demonstrate using in vivo and in vitro ubiquitination assays the potato cyst nematode (Globodera pallida) effector RHA1B is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that employs multiple host plant E2 ubiquitin conjugation enzymes to catalyze ubiquitination. RHA1B was able to suppress effector-triggered immunity (ETI), as manifested by suppression of hypersensitive response (HR) mediated by a broad range of nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) immune receptors, presumably via E3-dependent degradation of the NB-LRR receptors. RHA1B also blocked the flg22-triggered expression of Acre31 and WRKY22, marker genes of pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunity (PTI), but this did not require the E3 activity of RHA1B. Moreover, transgenic potato overexpressing the RHA1B transgene exhibited enhanced susceptibility to G. pallida. Thus, our data suggest RHA1B facilitates nematode parasitism not only by triggering degradation of NB-LRR immune receptors to block ETI signaling but also by suppressing PTI signaling via an as yet unknown E3-independent mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: To test breastfeeding duration and responsive parenting as independent predictors of infant weight change from birth to 12 months, and to test the moderating effect of a tiered parenting intervention on relations between breastfeeding and responsive parenting in relation to infant weight change. METHODS: Mother-infant dyads (N = 403) were participants in the ongoing Smart Beginnings (SB) randomized controlled trial testing the impact of the tiered SB parenting model that incorporates two evidence-based interventions: Video Interaction Project (VIP) and Family Check-Up (FCU). The sample was low income and predominantly Black and Latinx. Responsive parenting variables (maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness) came from coded observations of mother-infant interactions when infants were 6 months. Continuous weight-for-age (WFA) z-score change and infant rapid weight gain (RWG) from 0 to 12 months were both assessed. RESULTS: Longer breastfeeding duration was significantly associated with less WFA z-score change. The relationship between breastfeeding duration and WFA z-score change was significant only for infants in the intervention group. Intrusive parenting behaviors were also associated with greater WFA z-score change after accounting for breastfeeding duration. CONCLUSIONS: This study is one of the first to test both breastfeeding and parenting in relation to infant weight gain in the first year. Findings may have implications for family-focused child obesity prevention programs.

BSD (mammalian BTF2-like transcription factors, synapse-associated proteins, and DOS2-like proteins) is a conserved domain that exists in a variety of organisms, but its function has not been well studied. Here, we identified a novel BSD domain-containing protein (SlBSD1) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Biochemical and microscopy assays indicated that SlBSD1 is a functional transcription factor that is predominantly localized in the nucleus. Loss-of-function and overexpression analyses suggested that SlBSD1 is a novel regulator of vegetative growth and leaf senescence in tomato. SlBSD1-knockdown (-KD) plants exhibited retarded vegetative growth and precocious leaf senescence, whereas SlBSD1-overexpression (-OX) plants displayed the opposite phenotypes. The negative role of SlBSD1 in leaf senescence was also supported by RNA-seq analysis comparing leaf tissues from SlBSD1-KD and wild-type plants. In addition, contents of soluble solids were altered in fruits in the SlBSD1-KD and SlBSD1-OX plants. Taken together, our data suggest that the novel transcription factor SlBSD1 plays important roles in controlling fruit quality and other physiological processes in tomato, including vegetative growth and leaf senescence.

The plant-parasitic nematode Globodera pallida is an obligate biotroph that only reproduces on select species in the Solanum family. The establishment of the feeding site, the syncytium, involves secretion of effectors into the plant cell to combat the plant defense response and facilitate transformation of root cells into the syncytium. Despite the important predicted roles of effectors in the plant-pathogen interactions, the functionality of G. pallida effectors is largely unknown. In this study, we identified and characterized a G. pallida effector protein disulfide isomerase (GpPDI1). GpPDI1 contains two thioredoxin domains that function together to reduce disulfide bonds, as manifested by the nullification of enzymatic activity when either domain is absent. The transcript of GpPDI1 is localized in the dorsal gland of the nematode during the J2 stage. In addition, GpPDI1 can trigger defense-related cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) leaf tissue and localizes in the plant host cell's cytoplasm and nucleus when transiently expressed in plant cells. Significantly, the ability of elicitation of cell death is not dependent on the enzymatic activity of GpPDI1 or correlated with the subcellular distribution of GpPDI1, suggesting that a nondisulfide reducing function or structural feature of GpPDI1 is responsible for the recognition by the host immune system to elicit cell death.

'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' is a plant pathogen affecting the families Solanaceae and Apiaceae in different parts of the world. 'Ca. L. solanacearum' is a Gram-negative, fastidious α-proteobacterium that is vectored by different psyllid species. Plant-pathogenic bacteria are known for interfering with the host physiology or defense mechanisms, often by secreting bacterial effectors. Effector proteins are critical for virulence; therefore, the identification of effectors could help with disease management. In this study, we characterized the Sec-translocon-dependent 'Ca. L. solanacearum'-hypothetical protein effector 1 (Lso-HPE1). We compared this protein sequence in the different 'Ca. L. solanacearum' haplotypes. We predicted the signal peptide and validated its function using Escherichia coli's alkaline phosphatase fusion assay. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana demonstrated that Lso-HPE1 from 'Ca. L. solanacearum' haplotypes A and B were able to inhibit the induction of cell death in plants. We also compared gene expression of the Lso-HPE1- transcripts in 'Ca. L. solanacearum' haplotypes A and B in tomato and in the vector Bactericera cockerelli. This work validates the identification of a Sec-translocon-dependent 'Ca. L. solanacearum' protein possibly involved in suppression of plant cell death.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prenatal social support was associated with infant adiposity in the first 18 months of life in a low-income, Hispanic sample, known to be at high risk of early child obesity. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a longitudinal analysis of 262 low-income, Hispanic mother-infant pairs in the control group of the Starting Early child obesity prevention trial. Prenatal social support was measured using an item from the Maternal Social Support Index. We used multilevel modeling to predict weight-for-length z-score trajectories from birth to age 18 months and logistic regression to predict macrosomia and overweight status at ages 6, 12, and 18 months. RESULTS: High prenatal social support was independently associated with lower infant adiposity trajectories from birth to age 18 months (B = -0.40; 95% CI, -0.63 to -0.16), a lower odds of macrosomia (aOR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.15-0.80), and a lower odds of overweight at ages 12 (aOR = 0.28; 95% CI, 0.10-0.74) and 18 months (aOR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.14-0.89). Prenatal social support was not significantly associated with overweight status at age 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal social support may protect against excessive infant adiposity and overweight in low-income, Hispanic families. Further research is needed to elucidate mechanisms underlying these associations and to inform preventive strategies beginning in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Melamine and cyanuric acid, which are currently used in a variety of common consumer products and present in foods, have been implicated in the development of urolithiasis and acute kidney injury in Chinese children. To determine whether US children have measurable concentrations of these chemicals in their bodies and whether they are at greater risk of acute kidney injury, we measured melamine and cyanuric acid exposure in a cohort of US children and determined their relationship with markers of kidney injury. METHODS: We measured urinary melamine and cyanuric acid in a convenience sample of 109 children (4 months - 8 years) from Seattle, WA and New York City, NY using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. We measured several urinary markers of kidney injury: fatty acid binding protein 3 (FABP3), kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) using Luminex xMAP methods, and urine urea was measured using standard laboratory methods. We described urinary melamine and cyanuric acid concentrations and assessed predictors of the exposures. We used multivariable linear regression to assess relationships between melamine/cyanuric acid and kidney injury markers in unadjusted and adjusted (creatinine, age, sex) analyses. RESULTS: Melamine and cyanuric acid were above the limit of detection (LOD) in 78% and 95% of all samples, respectively. The mean concentrations (SD) for melamine and cyanuric acid were 27.4 ng/ml (141.9 ng/ml) and 35.3 ng/ml (42.4 ng/ml). In unadjusted analyses, we observed statistically significant increases in the percentages of FABP3 and KIM1 in relation to a one log unit change in melamine and cyanuric acid, respectively. In adjusted analyses, we observed a 55% (95% CI 0, 141) increase in KIM1 in relation to a one log unit increase in cyanuric acid. CONCLUSIONS: US children have detectable concentrations of melamine and cyanuric acid in urine, and these concentrations are higher than those reported in children from other countries. This is a novel finding that improves upon previous exposure estimates using questionnaires only and suggests widespread exposure in the population. Cyanuric acid is associated with increased KIM 1 concentrations, suggesting kidney injury. Given the potential widespread exposure, future analyses should examine melamine and cyanuric acid in relation to chronic kidney disease and markers of kidney injury in a larger cohort that is representative of the general population.

This article analyzes a World War II-era Army field jacket and the principle of layering it represents as a technology of war. The M-1943 jacket, designed in military laboratories and issued to soldiers in the European Theater, represents a scientized approach to layering clothing developed on test expeditions and in new research and development laboratories run by the Quartermaster Corps. Drawing on both histories of technology and histories of design, this article shows how the M-43 jacket operated as part of a broader assemblage of testing facilities, institutions, and individuals. The debate within the Army about how best to equip soldiers points to the struggle to control the growing authority of scientific expertise in the military bureaucracy. The science of dress, more than personal or subjective experience, shaped how the American military equipped soldiers for war and contributed to the expansion of military research laboratories in the Cold War.

Food insecurity, or the limited access to food, has been associated with maternal child feeding styles and practices. While studies in other parenting domains suggest differential and additive impacts of poverty-associated stressors during pregnancy and infancy, few studies have assessed relations between food insecurity during these sensitive times and maternal infant feeding styles and practices. This study sought to analyze these relations in low-income Hispanic mother-infant pairs enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of an early obesity prevention program (Starting Early). Food insecurity was measured prenatally and during infancy at 10 months. Food insecurity timing was categorized as never, prenatal only, infancy only, or both. Regression analyses were used to determine relations between food insecurity timing and styles and practices at 10 months, using never experiencing food insecurity as the reference, adjusting for family characteristics and material hardships. 412 mother-infant pairs completed 10-month assessments. Prolonged food insecurity during both periods was associated with greater pressuring, indulgent and laissez-faire styles compared to never experiencing food insecurity. Prenatal food insecurity was associated with less vegetable and more juice intake. If food insecurity is identified during pregnancy, interventions to prevent food insecurity from persisting into infancy may mitigate the development of obesity-promoting feeding styles and practices.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a child obesity prevention intervention, beginning in pregnancy, on infant feeding practices in low-income Hispanic families. STUDY DESIGN: The Starting Early randomized controlled trial enrolled pregnant women at a third trimester visit. Women (n = 533) were randomly allocated to a standard care control group or an intervention group participating in prenatal and postpartum individual nutrition/breastfeeding counseling and subsequent nutrition and parenting support groups coordinated with well-child visits. Outcome measures included infant feeding practices and maternal infant feeding knowledge at infant age 3 months, using questions adapted from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II and an infant 24-hour diet recall. RESULTS: A total of 456 families completed 3-month assessments. The intervention group had higher prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding on the 24-hour diet recall (42.7% vs 33.0%, P = .04) compared with controls. The intervention group reported a higher percentage of breastfeeding vs formula feeding per day (mean [SD] 67.7 [39.3] vs 59.7 [39.7], P = .03) and was less likely to introduce complementary foods and liquids compared with controls (6.3% vs 16.7%, P = .001). The intervention group had higher maternal infant feeding knowledge scores (Cohen d, 0.29, 95% CI .10-.48). The effect of Starting Early on breastfeeding was mediated by maternal infant feeding knowledge (Sobel test 2.86, P = .004). CONCLUSIONS: Starting Early led to increased exclusive breastfeeding and reduced complementary foods and liquids in 3-month-old infants. Findings document a feasible and effective infrastructure for promoting breastfeeding in families at high risk for obesity in the context of a comprehensive obesity prevention intervention. The discovery of novel plasma-based biomarkers could lead to new approaches in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we explore the role of plasma apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) as a risk marker for PD and evaluate the influence of APOA1 promoter variation on plasma ApoA1 levels. Plasma ApoA1 and the single-nucleotide polymorphism, rs670, were assayed in a discovery cohort (cohort 1) of 301 PD patients, 80 normal controls (NCs), and 165 subjects with other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as a cohort (cohort 2) of 158 PD patients from a second clinical site. Additionally, rs670 was genotyped in a third cohort of 1,494 PD and 925 NC subjects from both clinical sites. Compared to both normal and disease controls, PD patients have lower plasma ApoA1 (P < 0.001 for both comparisons). Moreover, in PD patients, plasma ApoA1 levels are correlated with genotype at the APOA1 promoter polymorphism, rs670. Specifically, lower plasma ApoA1 levels were found in rs670 major allele (G) homozygotes in both cohort 1 (P = 0.009) and in a replication cohort (cohort 2; n = 158 PD patients; P = 0.024). Finally, evaluating rs670 genotype frequencies in 1,930 PD cases versus 997 NCs, the rs670 GG genotype shows a trend toward association (odds ratio: 1.1; P = 0.10) with PD. Our results are compatible with a model whereby circulating ApoA1 levels may be useful in risk-stratifying subjects for the development of PD, with higher ApoA1 levels suggesting relative protection. Future studies evaluating modulation of ApoA1 as a novel therapeutic strategy in PD are warranted. © 2014 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

This study establishes that sparse canonical correlation analysis (SCCAN) identifies generalizable, structural MRI-derived cortical networks that relate to five distinct categories of cognition. We obtain multivariate psychometrics from the domain-specific sub-scales of the Philadelphia Brief Assessment of Cognition (PBAC). By using a training and separate testing stage, we find that PBAC-defined cognitive domains of language, visuospatial functioning, episodic memory, executive control, and social functioning correlate with unique and distributed areas of gray matter (GM). In contrast, a parallel univariate framework fails to identify, from the training data, regions that are also significant in the left-out test dataset. The cohort includes164 patients with Alzheimer's disease, behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia, semantic variant primary progressive aphasia, non-fluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia, or corticobasal syndrome. The analysis is implemented with open-source software for which we provide examples in the text. In conclusion, we show that multivariate techniques identify biologically-plausible brain regions supporting specific cognitive domains. The findings are identified in training data and confirmed in test data.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are defined by the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits in the central nervous system (CNS), and only neuropathological examination enables a definitive diagnosis. Brain banks and their associated scientific programs have shaped the actual knowledge of NDs, identifying and characterizing the CNS deposits that define new diseases, formulating staging schemes, and establishing correlations between neuropathological changes and clinical features. However, brain banks have evolved to accommodate the banking of biofluids as well as DNA and RNA samples. Moreover, the value of biobanks is greatly enhanced if they link all the multidimensional clinical and laboratory information of each case, which is accomplished, optimally, using systematic and standardized operating procedures, and in the framework of multidisciplinary teams with the support of a flexible and user-friendly database system that facilitates the sharing of information of all the teams in the network. We describe a biobanking system that is a platform for discovery research at the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the University of Pennsylvania.

PURPOSE: We examined prospective associations between early childcare precarity, or the security and reliability of childcare arrangements, and subsequent maternal health. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a secondary analysis of survey responses from mothers of 2,836 children in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing study. We assessed the following childcare measures: insecure childcare, insecure childcare with missed work, inadequate childcare, and emergency childcare support. We used linear and logistic regression models with robust standard errors to examine associations between these measures when the index child was age 3 and maternal health outcomes (overall health, depression, and parenting stress) later when the child was age 9. We then examined additive experiences of childcare measures across child ages 1 and 3 on maternal health outcomes. RESULTS: Early inadequate childcare was associated with higher odds of later poor maternal overall health (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-2.41). All early childcare precarity measures were associated with higher odds of maternal depression (insecure childcare [aOR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.23-2.18]; insecure childcare with missed work [aOR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.13-2.22]; and inadequate childcare [aOR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.22-2.51]). Emergency childcare support was associated with lower odds of adverse maternal health outcomes (poor overall health [aOR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.48 to 0.88]; depression [aOR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.99]; and parenting stress [B -0.45; 95% CI, -0.80 to -0.10]). Prolonged experiences had stronger associations with maternal health than shorter experiences. CONCLUSION: Early childcare precarity has long-term adverse associations with maternal health, and emergency childcare support seems to be favorable for maternal health. These findings highlight childcare precarity as a social determinant of women's health for researchers, clinicians, and decision-makers.

Background: Dietary patterns during pregnancy may contribute to gestational weight gain (GWG) and birthweight, but there is limited research studying these associations in racial and ethnic minority groups. The objective of this study was to evaluate associations between prenatal dietary patterns and measures of GWG and birthweight in a cohort of culturally diverse Hispanic women with low incomes. Methods: Data were analyzed from 500 mother-infant dyads enrolled in the Starting Early Program, a childhood obesity prevention trial. Diet over the previous year was assessed in the third trimester of pregnancy using an interviewer-administered food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were constructed using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and principal components analysis (PCA) and analyzed as tertiles. GWG and birthweight outcomes were abstracted from medical records. Associations between dietary pattern tertiles and outcomes were assessed by multivariable linear and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results: Dietary patterns were not associated with measures of GWG or adequacy for gestational age. Greater adherence to the HEI-2015 and a PCA-derived dietary pattern characterized by nutrient-dense foods were associated with higher birthweight z-scores [ß: 0.2; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04 to 0.4 and ß: 0.3; 95% CI: 0.1 to 0.5, respectively], but in sex-specific analyses, these associations were only evident in male infants (ß: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.7 and ß: 0.3; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.6, respectively). Conclusions: Among a cohort of culturally diverse Hispanic women, adherence to healthy dietary patterns during pregnancy was modestly positively associated with increased birthweight, with sex-specific associations evident only in male infants.
