RESUMO

Corn silk (Zea mays L.) is the stigma of an annual gramineous plant named corn, which is distributed in many regions worldwide and has a long history of medicinal use. In recent years, with the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine, studies of corn silk based on modern technologies, such as GC-MS, LC-MS, and other analytical means, have offered more comprehensive analyses. Phytochemistry studies have shown that the main bioactive components in corn silk include flavonoids, polyphenols, phenolic acids, fatty acids, and terpenoids. Pharmacological studies have shown that corn silk extract has various pharmacological effects, such as reducing blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, regulating blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory effects, and anti-oxidation effects. In this paper, the related research on corn silk from the past few years is summarized to provide a theoretical reference for the further development and utilization of corn silk.

Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) P. K. Hsiao (MO) and Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bug. (ME) are two primary sources of the Astragalus herb, also known as "Huangqi" in China, which is widely applied to treat hypertension, glomerulonephritis, ischemic heart disease, and diabetes mellitus. As two different sources of the Astragalus herb, the chemical profiles of MO and ME may be different. Previous studies showed abundant differences in chemical composition between MO and ME. Therefore, the by-products of MO and ME, such as Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) P. K. Hsiao flower (MOF) and Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bug. flower (MEF), may have different phytochemical profiles. In this paper, a metabolomics method combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) was employed to analyze the components of MOF and MEF. Consequently, the results of principal component analysis (PCA) showed that MOF and MEF could be separated clearly. In total, 31 chemical markers differentiating MOF and MEF were successfully identified, including 22 flavonoids, 8 isoflavones and 1 benzopyran. Among them, the contents of 18 components, including Calycosin, Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, Quercetin, Rutin, Kaempferol, Formononetin, Isomucronulatol and Prim-O-glucosylcimifugin in MEF, were significantly higher than in MOF. In turn, the contents of another 13 components, covering Biochanin A, Tectoridin, Isomucronulatol-7-O-glucoside, Liquiritin, Rhamnetin, etc., were lower in the MEF group than that in the MOF group. It is worth noting that flavonoids, especially flavonoid glycosides, were the primary active chemical ingredients in MOF and MEF. The 18 ingredients in MEF with a higher level carried out diverse activities, like anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-tumor activities, which led us to speculate that MEF may have greater pharmacological effects and potential development prospects than MOF. The present results displayed that the contents of ingredients in the two different species of plants were radically different, and there was significant uniqueness to the components of MOF and MEF. Our study not only provides helpful chemical information for further quality assessment and active mechanism research of MOF and MEF but also offers scientific support for the resource utilization of MOF and MEF.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore elderly patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) white matter changes, the relationship between white matter (WM) abnormalities and emotional regulation strategies, coping styles in elderly ESRD patients. METHODS: Twenty-eight elderly ESRD patients and twenty-eight sex and age matched healthy controls (HC) were included in this study. Tract-based spatial statistic (TBSS) was used to investigate the microstructural changes of WM. Two questionnaires were used to measure emotional regulation strategies and coping styles. RESULTS: Neuroimaging analysis showed that the damage of WM structure was widespread in elderly ESRD patients. Psychological test results showed that there were differences in emotional regulation strategies and coping styles between elderly ESRD patients and HC. Furthermore, mediating analysis showed that the mean diffusivity (MD) of the significantly different brain regions played a complete mediating role between group and positive coping style. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the integrity of WM, emotional regulation strategies and coping styles play an important role in ESRD patients. Our findings provide evidence that positive coping style may be fully mediated by MD. These results may help us develop new ways to treat and prevent physical and psychological problems in elderly ESRD hemodialysis patients.

Background and purpose: This study explores the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and mortality among Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, providing evidence for the potential benefits of vitamin D (VD) supplementation. Methods: PD patients were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2020. These patients were categorized based on their serum 25(OH)D levels: deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency. We compared demographic information and analyzed mortality data from the National Death Index. A restricted cubic spline model assessed the nonlinear association between 25(OH)D levels and mortality, complemented by multivariable Cox regression analysis. Consistency of results was checked through subgroup analysis. Results: The study included 364 PD patients: 87 (23.9%) with VD deficiency, 121 (33.2%) with insufficiency, and 156 (42.9%) with sufficiency. Demographically, 46.4% were male, and 56% were over 65 years. The deficiency group predominantly consisted of Mexican Americans (53.1%), had lower income levels, a higher unmarried rate, and increased liver disease incidence. The analysis showed a U-shaped curve between 25(OH)D levels and mortality risk, with the lowest risk at 78.68 nmol/L (p-non-linear = 0.007, p-overall = 0.008). Kaplan-Meier analysis found the highest survival rates in patients with 25(OH)D levels between 75-100 nmol/L (p = 0.039). Compared to this group, patients with levels below 50 nmol/L had a 3.52-fold increased mortality risk (95% CI = 1.58-7.86, p = 0.002), and those above 100 nmol/L had a 2.92-fold increase (95% CI = 1.06-8.05, p = 0.038). Age-specific subgroup analysis (p = 0.009) revealed that both very low (<50 nmol/L) and high (>100 nmol/L) levels increased mortality risk in patients under 65, while levels below 75 nmol/L raised mortality risk in older patients. Conclusion: Serum 25(OH)D levels are nonlinearly linked to mortality in PD patients, with optimal survival rates occurring at 75-100 nmol/L. Deviations from this range increase the risk of death.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the impact of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) on the prevalence of CASP among middle-aged individuals, aiming to provide insights for CASP prevention. METHODS: 1105 subjects were categorized into HHcy group or normal tHcy group based on their plasma total homocysteine (tHcy). All participants underwent carotid artery ultrasonography to assess the presence of unilateral and bilateral CASP. Comparative analyses of demographic and clinical data were conducted between the two groups. Logistic regression and prespecified subgroup analyses were performed to determine whether HHcy independently contributed to bilateral CASP. RESULTS: 132 individuals exhibited bilateral CASP. The prevalence of bilateral CASP was significantly higher in the HHcy group compared to the normal tHcy group (21.55 % vs. 10.82 %, p = 0.003). Univariate logistic analysis showed a significant association between HHcy and the prevalence of bilateral CASP (OR = 2.056, 95 %CI 1.089-3.881, p = 0.026). In all four models of multivariate logistic analysis, HHcy consistently emerged as an independent risk factor for bilateral CASP, with odd ratios of 1.958, 2.047, 2.023, and 2.186. This association remained significant across all five subgroups stratified by age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, and BMI. CONCLUSION: Our studies demonstrated HHcy was an independent risk factor for the prevalence of bilateral CASP in the middle-aged population. Theses results emphasized the importance of addressing HHcy in preventive strategies aimed at mitigating the burden of CASP among middle-aged individuals.

Morus alba L., a common traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with a centuries-old medicinal history, owned various medicinal parts like Mori folium, Mori ramulus, Mori cortex and Mori fructus. Different medical parts exhibit distinct modern pharmacological effects. Mori folium exhibited analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic action and lipid-regulation effects. Mori ramulus owned anti-bacterial, anti-asthmatic and diuretic activities. Mori cortex showed counteraction action of pain, inflammatory, bacterial, and platelet aggregation. Mori fructus could decompose fat, lower blood lipids and prevent vascular sclerosis. The main chemical components in Morus alba L. covered flavonoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and amino acids. This article comprehensively analyzed the recent literature related to chemical components and pharmacological actions of M. alba L., summarizing 198 of ingredients and described the modern activities of different extracts and the bioactive constituents in the four parts from M. alba L. These results fully demonstrated the medicinal value of M. alba L., provided valuable references for further comprehensive development, and layed the foundation for the utilization of M. alba L.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is an effective treatment in chronic low back pain (CLBP), but there are few studies on CLBP in the elderly, and the intervention effect is controversial. We aimed to compare the efficacy of different exercises therapy on CLBP, dysfunction, quality of life, and mobility in the elderly. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, EMBASE, and PubMed from the database inception till December 31, 2022. The publication languages were Chinese and English. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise intervention in the elderly (≥ 60 years) with CLBP were included. Two reviewers independently extracted the data and evaluated them using the Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Trials 2 (RoB2). The pooled effect sizes on different aspects of outcome measures were calculated. RESULTS: Sixteen articles (18 RCTs) were included, comprising a total of 989 participants. The quality of included studies was relatively high. Meta-analysis results indicated that exercise therapy could improve visual analog scale (VAS) (WMD = - 1.75, 95% CI - 2.59, - 0.92, p < 0.05), Oswestry disability index (ODI) (WMD = - 9.42, 95% CI - 15.04, - 3.79, p < 0,005), short-form 36-item health survey physical composite summary (SF-36PCS) (WMD = 7.07, 95% CI 1.01, 13.14, p < 0.05), short-form 36-item health survey mental composite summary (SF-36MCS) (WMD = 7.88, 95% CI 0.09, 15.67, p < 0.05), and timed up and go test (TUG) (WMD = - 0.92, 95% CI - 2.22, 0.38, p < 0.005). CONCLUSION: Exercise therapy effectively improved VAS, ODI, and SF-36 indexes in the elderly. Based on the subgroup, when designing the exercise therapy regimen, aerobics, strength, and mind-body exercise (≥ 12 weeks, ≥ 3 times/week, ≥ 60 min) should be considered carefully, to ensure the safety and effectiveness for the rehabilitation of CLBP patients. More high-quality trials are needed in future to confirm the effect of exercise on SF-36 and TUG indexes.

Gait disturbances are among the main symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and can increase fall risk. In this study we aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of different exercise modes on gait indexes of PD patients. We conducted a review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in studies listed in Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrailS.gov, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases from their inception to October 23, 2021. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of exercise on gait index by using the Timed Up and Go test, (TUG), stride length, stride cadence, or 6 Minutes Walking Test (6MWT). We used Review Manager 5.3 to evaluate the quality of the included literature, and we used Stata 15.1 and R-Studio for the network meta-analysis. We assessed the relative ranking of therapies by the surface under the cumulative ranking possibilities. In 159 studies, there were 24 exercise interventions. Compared with the control group, 13 exercises showed significant improvements on the TUG; six exercises were significantly better for improving stride length; only one exercise was better for improving stride cadence; and four exercises were better for improving the 6MWT. The surface under the cumulative ranking curves suggested that Pilates, body weight support treadmill training, resistance training, and a multidisciplinary exercise program were preferable for gains on TUG, stride length, stride cadence, and 6MWT. This meta-analytic review found that exercise therapies bring obvious benefits to gait indexes of patients with PD, and the efficacy of exercise therapies varied with different types of exercise and outcome indexes.

Our objective in this paper was to systematically review evaluations of the effects of exercises on pain symptoms and activities of daily living (ADL) in middle-aged and elderly patients with low back pain (LBP). We searched Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCO, and China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI) databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on this topic. We evaluated the methodological quality of included articles using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale, and we statistically analyzed these studies using RevMan software. We reviewed 18 RCTs (23 comparison groups) with a total of 910 participants, and our meta-analysis confirmed that exercises significantly improved both pain and ADLs measured on visual analog scales (VAS) (SMD = -0.91, 95% CI: [-1.3, -0.52], p < 0.00001) and on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) (SMD = -2.07, 95% CI: [-3.19, -0.96], p < 0.00001). We conclude that exercises can reduce pain severity and improve ADL capacity in middle-aged and elderly persons with LBP, confirming that exercise can serve as a medical intervention for these indivdiuals. However, given the high heterogeneity of responses among individual participants, there remains a need for further study.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder associated with an increased incidence of cognitive and emotional disorders. Previous studies have indicated that the frontostriatal circuits play a significant role in brain disorders. However, few studies have investigated functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities in the frontostriatal circuits in T2DM. Objective: We aimed to investigate the abnormal functional connectivity (FC) of the frontostriatal circuits in patients with T2DM and to explore the relationship between abnormal FC and diabetes-related variables. Methods: Twenty-seven patients with T2DM were selected as the patient group, and 27 healthy peoples were selected as the healthy controls (HCs). The two groups were matched for age and sex. In addition, all subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and neuropsychological evaluation. Seed-based FC analyses were performed by placing six bilateral pairs of seeds within a priori defined subdivisions of the striatum. The functional connection strength of subdivisions of the striatum was compared between the two groups and correlated with each clinical variable. Results: Patients with T2DM showed abnormalities in the FC of the frontostriatal circuits. Our findings show significantly reduced FC between the right caudate nucleus and left precentral gyrus (LPCG) in the patients with T2DM compared to the HCs. The FC between the prefrontal cortex (left inferior frontal gyrus, left frontal pole, right frontal pole, and right middle frontal gyrus) and the right caudate nucleus has a significant positive correlation with fasting blood glucose (FBG). Conclusion: The results showed abnormal FC of the frontostriatal circuits in T2DM patients, which might provide a new direction to investigate the neuropathological mechanisms of T2DM.

Tumor immunotherapy, especially that involving programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunosuppressive checkpoint inhibitors, has become an important part of tumor treatment strategy in the past decade. Blocking PD-1/PD-L1 signaling pathway can reduce the inhibitory effect of PD-1 pathway on T cells, promote the anti-tumor activity of activated T cells, and prolong the remission period of tumor. While PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy is effective in the treatment of solid malignant tumors, it also has shortcomings, due to the complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Regulatory T cells (Tregs) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells play an important role in the TME and are closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors. Tregs can inhibit the anti-tumor immune effect, while Th17 cells play a dual role in tumor immunity, which not only promotes tumorigenesis but also promotes anti-tumor immunity. In the occurrence and development of tumor, PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, Tregs and Th17 cells are interrelated. However, the complicated relationship between the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, Tregs, and Th17 cells has not been fully clarified. Here, we summarize the immunoregulation mechanisms and discuss the crosstalk between the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, Tregs, and Th17 cells, with the aim of providing novel insights for future cancer treatment.

Aureochaeglobosins A-C (1-3), three novel [4 + 2] cycloaddition heterodimers of chaetoglobosin and aureonitol derivatives, were obtained from the culture of endophytic fungus Chaetomium globosum, representing the first adduct examples of chaetoglobosins. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and a modified Mosher's method. Compounds 2 and 3 showed significant cytotoxicities against human MDA-MB-231 cancer cells with IC50 values of 7.6 and 10.8 µM, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Mean platelet volume (MPV) is one of the four platelet parameters (platelet count, MPV, platelet distribution width and plateletcrit), which indicates the activation of platelet. We aim to investigate the associations between pre-treatment MPV levels and clinical hematology parameters, pathology parameters and prognosis of patients with invasive breast cancer (IBC). METHODS: Medical records of 340 breast tumor patients (170 IBC vs. 170 breast benign tumor) were retrospectively reviewed. Patients in two groups were matched for age, body mass index, smoking status and complications. To analyze: differences in pre-treatment MPV levels between IBC group and breast benign tumor group; differences between pre- and postoperative MPV levels in IBC patients; correlations between pre-treatment MPV and clinical hematology parameters, clinicopathologic parameters and prognosis in IBC patients. RESULTS: As we analyzed, pre-treatment MPV levels of IBC patients were significantly higher than the controls (8.65 ± 0.98 vs 8.34 ± 0.78, P = 0.002), and preoperative MPV levels were significantly higher than the postoperative in IBC patients (8.65 ± 0.98 vs 8.44 ± 0.91, P = 0.042). In IBC group, pre-treatment MPV level associated, significantly, with clinical hematology parameters (platelet, fibrinogen, albumin, fasting blood glucose, P = 0.003, 0.042, 0.032, 0.046, respectively) and with clinicopathological parameters (distant metastasis, primary tumor size, tumor node metastasis stages, P = 0.039, 0.002, 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, univariate and multivariate survival analysis demonstrated that MPV was significant prognostic factor (P = 0.035, HR 1.86, 95 % confidence interval 1.06-3.25). CONCLUSION: High pre-treatment MPV level in IBC patients was a potential predictive factor and significant independent prognostic factor.

PURPOSE: To research the association between pre-treatment elevated platelet count and clinicopathologic characteristics in breast cancer (BC), as well as explore the relationship between pre-treatment elevated platelet count and HER2 status and prognosis of BC patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort of BC patients who were newly diagnosed or treated by surgery only and had pathological detection results and platelet values in the Department of Oncology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical College were enrolled from 1/1/2008 until 31/12/2009, and followed up until 31/12/2014. Age, thrombocyte parameters before chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, immunohistochemical (IHM) indexes, and regional lymph node (LN) involvement and progression-free survival (PFS) were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 447 eligible subjects were included in this research. As we analyzed, for HER2, positive and negative, the incidence rates of elevated platelet count were 25.8% and 14.7% (P<0.05). In the Cox proportional hazards model both variables were independent risk factors for BC (for HER2, OR, 0.592, 95% confidence interval, CI, 0.355 to 0.985, P=0.044;f or PLT, OR, 0.998, 95% CI, 0.996 to 1.000, P=0.042). For ER, PR, Ki67 and LN involvement, the differences were not statistically significant (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this research, pre-treatment elevated level of platelet count demostrated a significantrelationship with HER2 amplification/overexpression, and both variables significantly influenced the prognosis of BC. However, elevated platelet count did not exhibit any association with ER, PR, Ki67 and LN involvement.
