RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare clinical outcomes between gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) and trabeculectomy (TRAB) in patients with advanced-stage pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG). METHODS: This comparative study comprised 62 patients who underwent GATT (N = 31) or TRAB (N = 31) for advanced-stage PEXG. Primary outcome was cumulative probability of surgical success at the end of 12-month follow-up. Success was determined as intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction ≥ 30% from baseline, IOP between 6 and 18 mmHg and IOP upper limits for IOP < 15 mmHg and < 12 mmHg, separately. Secondary outcomes were IOP reduction, antiglaucoma medication (AGM) use, and complications in the study. RESULTS: Age, sex, cup/disc ratio, mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness did not significantly differ between the groups (p > 0.05 for all). The probability of cumulative surgical success at the end of 12 months was similar between the two groups for IOP < 15 mmHg and < 18 mmHg but significantly higher after TRAB (92.0%) than GATT (82.5%) for IOP < 12 mmHg (log-rank test p = 0.035). Percentage of IOP reduction from baseline was similar between the groups (53.1 ± 18.6% in GATT group and 53.0 ± 16.6% in TRAB group, p = 0.98) at the end of 12 months. No significant difference in the mean number of AGM was present at the 12-month visit (1.3 ± 1.4 in GATT and 1.1 ± 1.4 in TRAB, p = 0.65). CONCLUSION: At the end of 12 months, IOP reduction rate was similar between GATT and TRAB. Cumulative surgical success was higher after TRAB than GATT for IOP < 12 mmHg.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate corneal endothelial cell morphology in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). METHOD: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients with TAO presenting to the ophthalmology department between January 2018 and January 2022 were included in the study. The findings were compared with 98 eyes of 49 healthy individuals. Mean endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation (CV), maximum cell area, minimum cell area, average cell area, and hexagonality ratio were obtained using non-contact specular microscopy. The thicknesses of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS: The TAO group consisted of 36 patients, 11 (30.6%) men and 25 (69.4%) women, and the control group of 49 healthy individuals, 14 (28.6%) men and 35 (71.4%). No significant differences were determined between the TAO and control groups in terms of the specular microscopy findings of mean ECD, CV, or hexagonality ratio values (p > 0,05). However, the mean Hertel values differed significantly between the two groups (p = 0.001). When the TAO group was divided into two subgroups based on patients who had previously received prednisolone therapy and those who had not, significant differences were observed in terms of mean ECD, CV, and hexagonality ratio values (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Comparison of patients diagnosed with active TAO and receiving prednisolone therapy and the TAO patients with inactive disease revealed lower ECD, higher CV values, and lower hexagonality ratios in the prednisolone therapy group. These findings all suggest that inflammation in patients undergoing active disease affects the corneal endothelium.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess the development of peripheral anterior synechia (PAS) formation rate and PAS locations on gonioscopic examination following gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) surgery and investigate the surgical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 35 eyes from 31 patients with open angle glaucoma who underwent GATT or combined GATT and phacoemulsification surgery were analyzed. Presence of PAS was assessed on gonioscopy in nasal, temporal, superior and inferior quadrants at months 1, 3 and 6 following surgery. Surgical outcomes were also noted. RESULTS: Frequencies of PAS formation were 38.3%, 25.3%, 17.0% and 19.1% at postoperative 1 month, 34.0%, 26.4%, 17% and 22.6% at postoperative 3 months and 32.3%, 25.8%, 16.1% and 25.8% at postoperative 6 months, in nasal, temporal, superior and inferior quadrants, respectively. The highest amount of PAS involvement was 3 clock hours in the study which was identified only in nasal and inferior quadrants. Frequency of PAS formation did not significantly differ between nasal, temporal, superior and inferior quadrants at all time points (p > 0.05). No significant differences of mean IOP levels were observed between patients who developed PAS and who did not develop PAS at postoperative 1 month (p = 0.72), 3 months (p = 0.21) and 6 months (p = 0.59). The mean IOP and mean number of antiglaucoma medications decreased from 31.5 ± 7.2 mmHg and 3.6 ± 0.6 at baseline to 13.8 ± 3.1 mmHg and 1.6 ± 1.3 at postoperative 6 months, respectively (p < 0.001, for both). Cumulative success rate (95% confidence interval) was 74.3% (69.9-78.6%) at the end of the study. Mild to moderate degrees of hyphema occurred in all cases postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Although PAS formation was observed to be relatively higher in nasal quadrant, PAS frequency was not statistically different between the angle quadrants.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of adalimumab in the cases with refractory non-infectious uveitis and evaluate retinal vascular leakage changes on ultra-widefield fundus fluorescein angiography. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with refractory uveitis were included in study. RESULTS: Forty-four eyes of 23 patients with non-infectious uveitiswere evaluated. Clinically active inflammation was present in 19 eyes (43.18%), while 25 (56.8%) were inactive. The mean drug burden was a 9.91 ± 3.78 (5-21) in baseline, 7.3 ± 4.25 at third and 8.0 ± 4.71 at sixth month (p = 0.022). The mean choroidal thickness was 256.65 ± 43.63 µm in baseline, 240.49 ± 36.73 µm at third and 224.81 ± 34.91 µm at sixth month (p ≤ 0.05). In terms of leakage extend, leakage was initially present in a mean of 2.95 ± 4.55 clock hours, 2.41 ± 3.91 at third and 1.76 ± 3.44 at sixth month (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Adalimumab was found to be effective in establishing inflammation control by reducing drug burden, controlling retinal vascular leakage and choroidal inflammation in refractory uveitis.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: In this study, we modified the combined Mustarde and Furnas type otoplasty technique and evaluated the postoperative results of the patients for symmetry and complications. Eighty prominent ears in 42 patients who underwent otoplasty between January 2017 and April 2019 were included in this study. The authors determined the amount of postauricular subcutaneous tissue to be removed according to the shape of skin incision and relocated the postauricular muscle as an adjunct to the Mustarde and Furnas otoplasty technique. All patients were followed-up at least 12 months postoperatively. The patients were also evaluated for early postoperative complications (bleeding, hematoma, perichondritis, wound infection, and skin necrosis), late postoperative complications (asymmetry, hypertrophic scars, suture extrusion, and recurrence), and patient satisfaction using objective and subjective methods.Considering all the patients, early complications consisted of minimal low-flow bleeding (n = 4 ears/4 patients), hematoma (n = 1), and perichondritis (n = 1). Late complications consisted of suture extrusion (n = 2 ears/2 patients), hypertrophic scars (n = 2 ears/2 patients), and asymmetry (n = 1). None of the patients presented with wound infection or skin necrosis. Revision otoplasty was unilaterally performed in only 1 patient with the complaint of asymmetry. A natural-looking, adequate correction, and symmetric ear shape were achieved in all patients except 1. In terms of patient satisfaction, 38 of 42 patients evaluated the outcome as "very good," 3 as "good," and only 1 as "poor." Our modified technique produced very satisfactory results and reduced the postoperative complication and asymmetry rates, as well as eliminating recurrence. The authors recommend this simple and safe procedure with excellent outcomes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Signal peptide-CUB-Epidermal growth factor-like domain-containing protein 1 (SCUBE-1) is a protein expressed on the cell surface of endothelial cells and platelets. We aimed to determine the alterations in SCUBE-1 levels in patients at different stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were grouped into 4 regarding the presence and stage of diabetic retinopathy as follows: control group (n 32), patients without DR (n 39), patients with background DR (n 42) and patients with proliferative DR (n 55). Age, gender, duration of diabetes, fasting blood glucose levels, serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), SCUBE-1 and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of the patients were recorded. Central macular thickness and central macular volume were recorded and compared between groups. RESULTS: Totally 136 patients with diabetes mellitus and 32 control cases were included in the study. There is a significant increase in SCUBE-1 and MDA levels with an advance in DR. In correlation analysis, there was only a significant correlation present between serum SCUBE-1 and MDA levels (p 0.001) but not with other parameters. CONCLUSION: For the first time in literature, we determined a significant increase in SCUBE-1 levels in patients with DR. Moreover, with an advance in DR, SCUBE-1 levels were also increasing.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and central retinal thickness (CRT) in asthmatic children who were under inhaled corticosteroid treatment by using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-three children were prospectively analyzed in the study. Group 1 included 31 asthmatic children and group 2 included 22 healthy children. Asthmatic children received a dose 250 µg daily of inhaled fluticasone propionate (Flexotide, GlaxoSmithKline, Middlesex, UK). Allergy parameters including, exposure to smoke, eosinophil count, percentage of eosinophils, immunoglobuline (Ig) E levels, number of asthma attacks, number of sensitivity to allergens and follow-up time were recorded. The RNFLT, GCLT, SFCT, and CRT were analyzed with SS-OCT and the data were compared between the groups. RESULTS: There were 13 girls (41.9%) and 18 boys (58.1%) in group 1 and 13 girls (59.1%) and 9 boys (40.9%) in group 2 (p = 0.22). The mean age was 9.3 ± 2.2 years in group 1 and 9.9 ± 1.5 years in group 2 (p = 0.08). The mean CRT (239.26 ± 34.56 µm versus 226.82 ± 26.23 µm, p = 0.22) and mean SFCT (273.97 ± 40.95 µm versus 280.41 ± 32.78 µm, p = 0.54) did not significantly differ between the groups. The superior, inferior, and average RNFLT were significantly lower in group 1 than group 2 (p < 0.05). There were significant correlations between total corticosteroid dose and RNFLT (p < 0.05) and between IgE levels and GCLT (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The SS-OCT revealed that asthmatic children under inhaled corticosteroid treatment have lower RNFLT than healthy subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia has not yet been fully clarified, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction have been suggested to occur in patients with fibromyalgia. In recent years, endocan has been reported as an important biomarker for inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. In this study, we investigated this mechanism by measuring the serum endocan levels in fibromyalgia patients. METHODS: The serum samples collected from 37 female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia for the first time and 43 healthy women were analysed in terms of the endocan levels and laboratory parameters, and the values from the two groups were compared. RESULTS: In the patient group, the serum endocan level was found to be higher (p < 0.0001). Endocan had a significantly high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia (area under curve: 0.897, cutoff value: 9.81 ng/mL, sensitivity: 88.5%, specificity: 89.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are important in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. Increased endocan not only elucidates this mechanism but also presents as an important potential marker for fibromyalgia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND The present study sought to assess the renal and liver protective effect of N-acetylcysteine through NH3 and urea metabolism in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were scheduled for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who were scheduled for coronary artery bypass grafting were divided into 2 groups so as to receive (Group 1, n=35) or not receive (Group 2, n=35) 900 mg/day of n-acetylcysteine for 7 days before the operation starting from their admission to the service by a pulmonologist with the purpose of treating COPD until the day of surgery. Both groups were subjected to the same anesthesia protocol. Blood samples were taken preoperatively, within the first 15th minute following cessation of the cardiopulmonary bypass, at postoperative 24th hour, and at postoperative 48th hour. Blood tests included ammonia (NH3), lactate, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), troponin I (Tn I), and creatinine kinase-muscle brain (CKMB). RESULTS There was a significant difference between the groups' NH3 and lactate levels after cardiopulmonary bypass, postoperative 24th hour, and postoperative 48th hour (respectively, NH3: 39.0±8.8 vs. 55.4±19.6 and 40.1±8.4 vs. 53.2±20.2 mcg/dl, lactate: 1.7±0.9 vs. 2.1±1.2 and 1.2±0.5 vs. 1.8±1.4 mmol/L; p<0.01). Creatinine and BUN levels in Group 2 were found to be significantly higher at the postoperative 48th hour compared to the levels of Group 1 (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS N-acetylcysteine pretreatment appears to improve renal and hepatic functions through regulation of ammonia and nitrogen metabolism and reduction of lactate in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. We found that N-acetylcysteine improved kidney and/or liver functions.

RESUMO

In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), myo-inositol (MI) supplements have shown many beneficial effects. In this study, therefore, we aimed to investigate the serum level of myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX), which is the only enzyme catalyzing MI in vivo, in patients with PCOS. Serum MIOX enzyme levels and other laboratory parameters were compared between sixty patients, who were diagnosed with PCOS for the first time, and sixty healthy individuals at similar age and sex. MIOX serum levels were not different between two groups (p = 0.7428). MIOX median and 95% CI were 19.4 and 10.6-39.1 in the control group and 16.4 and 7.6-46.2 in the patient group respectively. Demographic data, biochemical and hematological parameters, hormone parameters were not different except from the lymphocyte count between the two groups. Lymphocyte count was higher in the patient group. Although the ratio of LH/FSH was higher in the patient group, it was not statistically significant. Our results suggest that serum MIOX levels do not change in PCOS. It was, therefore, concluded that MI deficiency observed in PCOS was not related to the level of MIOX enzyme which cleaves MI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland and has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Oxidative stress is considered as an important factor in the etiology of erectile dysfunction (ED), and in many experimental models, positive results have been obtained with melatonin treatment. This study aimed to measure serum melatonin levels in ED patients and to investigate the possible relationship between ED and melatonin levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe ED according to the five-item International Erectile Function Index (IIEF-5) and 22 healthy individuals were included in the study. The serum melatonin levels, anthropometric data, and other biochemical and hormonal parameters of all the subjects were recorded. Detailed anamnesis was also obtained in terms of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking status, and alcohol use. RESULTS: The serum melatonin level was found 34.2±13.3 ng/dL in the mild ED group, 33.3±14.7 ng/dL in the moderate ED group, 34.8±17.2 ng/dL in the severe ED group, and 44.6±16.5 ng/dL in the control group. The serum melatonin levels were significantly lower in all ED groups compared to the control group (p=0.019). There was no significant difference in the serum melatonin levels between the three ED groups. Diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, smoking and alcohol use were not significantly different between the ED groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: We consider that if our findings are supported by further studies with larger populations, the measurement of the serum melatonin level may have a future role in the diagnosis and treatment of ED.

RESUMO

AIM: A 50 g glucose challenge test (GCT) is recommended for screening all pregnant women for gestational diabetes mellitus. In this study, the effect of GCT on the thiol/disulfide balance was investigated. METHODS: One-hundred women that underwent a 50 g GCT at 24-28 weeks of gestation (63 positive and 37 negative results) were evaluated in terms of thiol/disulfide in serum samples at test hours 0 and 1. RESULTS: Compared to the baseline values (hour 0), after the glucose load (hour 1), the thiol and native thiol/total thiol (p < 0.0001) of the GCT-positive women were reduced whereas the values of glucose, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol (p < 0.0001) and total thiol increased (p = 0.018). CONCLUSION: In GCT-positive pregnant individuals, the glucose load increases oxidative stress by changing the thiol/disulfide homeostasis. Such an effect is not observed in healthy pregnancies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Fetuin-A is a physiological inhibitor of insulin receptor tyrosine kinase and thus associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and an increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aims to investigate the possible relation between the serum fetuin-A levels and the stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with T2DM. METHODS: This prospective study included 82 patients with T2DM and 19 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) (group 1). Diabetic patients were subclassified into three groups according to ocular findings: without DR (group 2; n = 26); non-proliferative DR (group 3; n = 29), and proliferative DR (group 4; n = 27). Serum fetuin-A levels were determined by a spectrophotometric technique using an immulite chemiluminescent immunometric assay. The data were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U test, and the results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation. RESULTS: Mean fetuin-A values were 256.4 ± 21.3 µg/ml in group 1, 263.5 ± 24.2 µg/ml in group 2, 282.2 ± 31.1 µg/ml in group 3, and 296.3 ± 26.2 µg/ml in group 4. Group 2 had higher mean fetuin-A level compared with group 1, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Serum fetuin-A levels were significantly higher in groups 3 and 4 compared with HCs (both p < 0.05). Compared with group 2, both DR groups had higher fetuin-A levels with a significant difference (both p < 0.05); and patients with proliferative DR had significantly higher serum fetuin-A levels compared with non-proliferative DR (p < 0.05). The mean serum fetuin-A levels increased with the stage of DR, and the highest levels were found in patients with proliferative DR. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest an association between fetuin-A levels and DR stage. In diabetic patients, the risk of retinopathy development increases with higher fetuin-A values. Fetuin-A may play an important role in the pathophysiology and progression of DR.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of retrograde intra-renal surgery (RIRS) on kidneys using the myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) enzyme. MIOX is a renal tubular-specific novel marker for the early diagnosis of acute kidney injury. METHODS: A total of twenty seven individuals that had undergone RIRS to treat kidney stones were included in the study. Biochemical tests were performed on serum samples collected immediately before RIRS (hour 0) and at the 6th and 24th hours after the surgery. RESULTS: The creatinine value at hour 6 was lower than the baseline (hour 0) value (p = 0.0305). Cystatin C at hour 6 was lower than the value measured at hour 24 (p = 0.0142). Similarly, MIOX was lower at hour 6 compared to hour 24 (p = 0.0214). MIOX/creatinine at hour 6 was lower than the value calculated at hour 24 (p = 0.0348). The basal values of MIOX and creatinine were found to have a positive correlation (correlation coefficient r = 0.5946, p = 0.0035). CONCLUSIONS: Similar to the serum creatinine, the serum MIOX level provides information about kidney functions. RIRS was confirmed to be a safe procedure for the treatment of acute kidney injury with no negative effects on the kidneys.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: The acute effects of cigarette smoking on pupil size and ocular wavefront aberrations (OWA) have been previously documented. The accommodation status of the eye is well known to be related to ocular aberrations. No previous study has evaluated the impact of cigarette smoking on the accommodation status of the eye. This study presents intriguing findings regarding the changes in objective accommodation of the eye after cigarette smoking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute changes in objective accommodation and OWA after cigarette smoking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 34 otherwise healthy cigarette smoker participants were included in this prospective study. All subjects smoked a single cigarette containing 1 mg nicotine. Measurements of pupil size, OWA and objective accommodation were done before and after smoking. A Wavefront Aberrometer device (Irx3, Imagine Eyes, Orsay, France) was used for the measurements. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 36.6 ± 10.3 years (range 21-51 years). Pupil size did not significantly differ before (mean 5.72 ± 1.21 mm) and after smoking (mean 5.68 ± 1.14 mm) (p = 0.62). However, a significant decrease was observed in total spherical aberration (TSA) of the eye after smoking (p = 0.01). There was an increase in objective accommodation after smoking at each accommodative stimulus (range 0-5). This increment was significant at 2 D (p = 0.02) and 3 D (p = 0.03) of stimulus. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The TSA of the eye significantly decreases after smoking. Cigarette smoking also causes a significant increase in objective accommodation at 2 D and 3 D of stimulus.

RESUMO

This study aims to present five cases with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) who were found to have intraocular air bubbles after intravitreal injection (IVI) treatment. The medical records of 148 infants who underwent IVI for ROP were retrospectively reviewed and the ones who demonstrated post-injection intraocular air bubble formation were recruited. Of the 148 patients (31 babies received ranibizumab, 20 babies received aflibercept, 97 babies received bevacizumab), five were found to have intraocular air bubbles right after the IVI. Two infants received intravitreal ranibizumab and three received intravitreal bevacizumab injections. Although intraocular pressure increased temporarily, no intraocular sterile or infective reactions were observed in the postoperative period. The air bubble was found to resorb spontaneously within 72 h. The occurrence rate of the intravitreal air bubbles in our series was 3.37 % despite previously not been reported in the literature. Due to the intravitreal air injection risk, it is important to be more careful while preparing the intravitreal medication before treatment in premature babies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to determine the oxidative-antioxidative status and levels of soluble interleukin-2 recep-tor (sIL-2R) in serum of patients with different types of HPV infections and to compare it with patients who are negative for HPV. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 80 women were divided into three groups as follows: Group 1 consisted of 25 women who were positive for HPV types 16 or 18; Group 2 consisted of 25 women who were positive for other types of HPV includ-ing type 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59 or 68; Group 3 consisted of 30 patients who were negative for HPV as a control group. Serum sIL-2R and plasma oxidative stress index (OSI) were analyzed. RESULTS: Serum sIL-2R levels were significantly higher in group 1 compared to group 2 and 3. OSI was found significantly increased in groups 1 and 2 compared to group 3. Also, we found a weak positive correlation between IL-2R and OSI. CONCLUSION: sIL-2R and oxidative stress may have a role in HPV infection, especially in case of high-risk types.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether keratoconus (KC) patients who applied the corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) and two different contact lens (CL) showed any differences in complaints and findings following the CXL. METHODS: This prospective, comparative, double-blind clinical study involved 60 eyes of 60 patients (38 female and 22 male). At the end of the CXL procedure, CL (Balafilcon A) was inserted in 29 patients (Group-1) while CL with different material content (Hioxifilcon A) designed for therapeutic/bandage purposes were inserted in 31 patients (Group-2). RESULTS: On the 1st and 3th day after the CXL, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of the postoperative symptoms. On the 3th day after the CXL, all cases of both two groups were found to complete the corneal re-epithelialization. There was more PE ratio in the patients who had allergic conjunctivitis. CONCLUSIONS: With the use of Balafilcon A and Hioxifilcon A lens materials, KC patients who underwent the CXL were found to have similar symptoms and clinical findings after the CXL. However, epithelial staining and PE were observed more in KC cases accompanied by allergic conjunctivitis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of a single intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection on blood flow parameters in the ophthalmic artery (OA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) in infants with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective and interventional study included 15 infants with ROP who were treated with IVB. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity, mean velocity (MV) and resistivity index were measured using pulse wave Doppler ultrasonography (Philips En Visor C, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in the OA and MCA, before IVB injection and 1 day, 1 week and 1 month after IVB injection. RESULTS: Measurements of PSV-OA, MV-OA and PSV-MCA showed significant changes after IVB treatment (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, p = 0.02, respectively). The PSV-OA measurements at 1 week and 1 month were significantly lower than the baseline PSV-OA measurement (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively). The MV-OA measurement was significantly lower at 1 month following IVB as compared to the baseline MV-OA measurement (p = 0.03). The PSV-MCA showed a significant decline 1 day after IVB injection (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that IVB causes significant alterations in blood flow parameters in the OA and MCA predicted by Doppler ultrasonography in infants with ROP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on ovarian injury and reserve in a rat model. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective experimental study, 16 female Sprague-Dawley albino rats (12 weeks, 220-240 g) were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1 included 8 normal healthy rats as controls. No drug was administered to the controls. Group 2 included the other 8 rats in which diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injections of streptozotocin (STZ). After overt DM occurred (blood glucose >250 mg/dl), all the animals were euthanized and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological examination. Immunoexpressions of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) and caspase-3 as well as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were assessed. Values were analyzed by t test. RESULTS: Immunoexpressions of NF-kB and caspase-3 were significantly higher in non-treated diabetic rats than in the control group (p = 0.011 and p = 0.010, respectively). In healthy control group, AMH levels (3.22 ± 0.58 ng/ml) were significantly higher than in the non-treated diabetic group (1.41 ± 0.25 ng/dl; p = 0.024). CONCLUSION: Hyperglycemia causes severe ovarian injury via NF-kB pathway and caspase-3 apoptotic pathway, leading to the decrease in ovarian reserve in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
