PURPOSE: To explore the value of clinical application with the whole process computed tomography (CT) guided percutaneous gastrostomy in esophageal tumor patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A consecutive series of 32 esophageal tumor patients in whom endoscopic gastrostomy or fluoroscopy guided gastrostomy were considered too dangerous or impossible due to the esophagus complete obstruction, complicate esophageal mediastinal fistula, esophageal trachea fistula or severe heart disease. All of the 32 patients were included in this study from 2 medical center and underwent the gastrostomy under whole process CT guided. RESULTS: All of the gastrostomy procedure was finished successfully under whole process CT guided and the technical success rate was 100%. The average time for each operation was 27 min. No serious complications occurred and the minor complications occurred in 3 patients, including local infection, severe hyperplasia of granulation tissue and tube dislodgment. There were no procedure related deaths. CONCLUSION: The technical success rate of whole process CT guided percutaneous gastrostomy is high and the complication is low. This technique can be used feasible and effectively in some special patients.

The spin Hall effect (SHE) can generate a pure spin current by an electric current, which is promisingly used to electrically control magnetization. To reduce the power consumption of this control, a giant spin Hall angle (SHA) in the SHE is desired in low-resistivity systems for practical applications. Here, critical spin fluctuation near the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition in chromium (Cr) is proven to be an effective mechanism for creating an additional part of the SHE, named the fluctuation spin Hall effect. The SHA is significantly enhanced when the temperature approaches the Néel temperature (TN) of Cr and has a peak value of -0.36 near TN. This value is higher than the room-temperature value by 153% and leads to a low normalized power consumption among known spin-orbit torque materials. This study demonstrates the critical spin fluctuation as a prospective way to increase the SHA and enriches the AFM material candidates for spin-orbitronic devices.

Circular RNAs are frequently dysregulated and show important regulatory function of tumorigenesis in cancers. Hsa_circ_0007380 was found to be elevated in human radioresistant esophageal cancer cells. Here, this study aimed to investigate the action and mechanism of hsa_circ_0007380 in esophageal cancer carcinogenesis and radiosensitivity. Quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting were performed to detect levels of genes and proteins. Functional experiments were conducted using MTT assay, EdU assay, clonogenic survival assay, flow cytometry and murine xenograft model assay, respectively. The binding between miR-644a and hsa_circ_0007380 or spindlin1 (SPIN1) was validated using dual-luciferase activity assay. Hsa_circ_0007380 was highly expressed in esophagus cancer tissues and cells, knockdown of hsa_circ_0007380 suppressed esophagus cancer cell proliferation, induced apoptosis and enhanced radiosensitivity in vitro, and the same effects were also confirmed in nude mice. Mechanistically, hsa_circ_0007380 sequestered miR-644a to release SPIN1 expression, implying the hsa_circ_0007380/miR-644a/SPIN1 competing endogenous RNA network esophagus cancer cells. miR-644a was decreased in esophagus cancer, re-expression of miR-644a restrained cell growth and conferred radiosensitivity in esophagus cancer, which were reversed by SPIN1 overexpression. Besides that, inhibition of miR-644a abolished the promoting action of hsa_circ_0007380 knockdown on esophagus cancer apoptosis and radiosensitivity. Hsa_circ_0007380 silencing impedes cell growth and reinforces radiosensitivity in esophagus cancer by miR-644a/SPIN1 axis, suggesting a promising therapeutic target for esophagus cancer combined treatment.

Perpendicularly magnetized structures that are switchable using a spin current under field-free conditions can potentially be applied in spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM). Several structures have been developed; however, new structures with a simple stack structure and MRAM compatibility are urgently needed. Herein, a typical structure in a perpendicular spin-transfer torque MRAM, the Pt/Co multilayer and its synthetic antiferromagnetic counterpart with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, was observed to possess an intrinsic interlayer chiral interaction between neighboring magnetic layers, namely, the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) effect. Furthermore, using a current parallel to the eigenvector of the interlayer DMI, we switched the perpendicular magnetization of both structures without a magnetic field, owing to the additional symmetry breaking introduced by the interlayer DMI. This SOT switching scheme realized in the Pt/Co multilayer and its synthetic antiferromagnet structure may open a new avenue toward practical perpendicular SOT-MRAM and other SOT devices.

The B(9)-H halogenation of o-carborane and m-carborane was achieved with excellent selectivities in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) under simple reaction conditions: single reagent [trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA), tribromoisocyanuric acid (TBCA) or N-iodosuccinimide (NIS)], catalyst-free, air-/moisture-tolerant, and convenient work-up. With this method, a variety of 9-halogenated o-carboranes and m-carboranes were obtained in good to excellent yields with broad tolerance of functional groups.

Spin waves can transfer information free of electron transport and are promising for wave-based computing technologies with low-power consumption as a solution to severe energy losses in modern electronics. Logic circuits based on the spin-wave interference have been proposed for more than a decade, while it has yet been realized at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate the interference of spin waves with wavelengths down to 50 nm in a low-damping magnetic insulator. The constructive and destructive interference of spin waves is detected in the frequency domain using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy, which is further confirmed by the Brillouin light scattering. The interference pattern is found to be highly sensitive to the distance between two magnetic nanowires acting as spin-wave emitters. By controlling the magnetic configurations, one can switch the spin-wave interferometer on and off. Our demonstrations are thus key to the realization of spin-wave computing system based on nonvolatile nanomagnets.

To reduce the size of optoelectronic devices, it is essential to understand the crystal size effect on the carrier transport through microscale materials. Here, we show a soft contact method to probe the properties of irregularly shaped microscale perovskite crystals by employing a movable liquid metal electrode to form a self-adaptative deformable electrode-perovskite-electrode junction. Accordingly, we demonstrate that (1) the photocurrents of perovskite quantum dot films and microplatelets show profound differences regarding both the on/off ratio and the response time upon light illumination; and (2) small-size perovskite (<50 µm) junctions may show negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior, whereas the NDR phenomenon is absent in large-size perovskite junctions within the same bias regime. Our studies provide a method for studying arbitrary-shaped crystals without mechanical damage, assisting the understanding of the photogenerated carriers transport through microscale crystals.

Spin waves can probe the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which gives rise to topological spin textures, such as skyrmions. However, the DMI has not yet been reported in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with arguably the lowest damping for spin waves. In this work, we experimentally evidence the interfacial DMI in a 7-nm-thick YIG film by measuring the nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation in terms of frequency, amplitude, and most importantly group velocities using all electrical spin-wave spectroscopy. The velocities of propagating spin waves show chirality among three vectors, i.e., the film normal direction, applied field, and spin-wave wave vector. By measuring the asymmetric group velocities, we extract a DMI constant of 16 µJ/m^{2}, which we independently confirm by Brillouin light scattering. Thickness-dependent measurements reveal that the DMI originates from the oxide interface between the YIG and garnet substrate. The interfacial DMI discovered in the ultrathin YIG films is of key importance for functional chiral magnonics as ultralow spin-wave damping can be achieved.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gastric cancer is a highly aggressive tumor containing cancer stem cells (CSCs), which participate in tumor initiation, therapeutic resistance, and tumor relapse. Proline-rich protein 11 (PRR11) has been shown to be up-regulated in human cancers; however, its role in gastric CSCs is unknown. We hypothesize that PRR11 may affect tumorigenicity of gastric CSCs. In this study, we explored the biological function and regulation of PRR11 in gastric CSCs. METHODS: Expression of PRR11 was evaluated in gastric CSC cell line by real-time quantitative PCR and western blot. The effect of PRR11 on tumorigenicity was examined by interference with gene expression using lentiviral vector-loaded shRNA. A xenograft tumor model using NOD/SCID mice was established to examine the role of PRR11 in tumor development. RESULTS: Data showed that PRR11 was highly expressed in gastric CSCs. PRR11 was responsible for the maintenance of self-renewal and tumorigenicity of gastric CSCs, and overexpression of exogenous PRR11 could restore the self-renewal of gastric non-CSCs. Furthermore, interference with PRR11 altered the expression of stemness transcription factors. Interestingly, MAPK signaling controlled PRR11 expression by increasing PRR11 protein stability, and maintained gastric CSCs self-renewal in a PRR11 dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: PRR11 regulated self-renewal and tumorigenicity of gastric CSCs through MAPK signaling, and could be used as a therapeutic target for gastric cancer.

Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by impairment of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, has been implicated in diabetic cardiovascular pathogenesis. In this study, low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMWF), which has multiple biological activities including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties, was investigated for its protective effect against endothelial dysfunction in Goto-Kakizaki type 2 diabetic rats. LMWF (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg/day) or probucol (100 mg/kg/day) were given to diabetic rats for 12 weeks. Basal blood pressure, acetylcholine- or flow-mediated relaxation of mesenteric and paw arteries, endothelium-dependent dilation of aorta, eNOS phosphorylation, and NO production were measured using laser Doppler flowmetry, force myograph, hematoxylin and eosin staining, western blot analysis, and an NO assay. We found that LMWF robustly ameliorated the basal hypertension and impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation in the aorta, as well as mesenteric and paw arteries in diabetic rats. In addition, the reduction in eNOS phosphorylation at Ser1177, eNOS expression, and NO production because of diabetes were partially reversed by LMWF treatment. However, probucol, a lipid-modifying drug with antioxidant properties, displayed only mild effects. Moreover, LMWF induced, in a dose-dependent manner, endothelium-dependent vasodilation and eNOS phosphorylation at Ser1177 in normal aorta, and also promoted Ser1177 phosphorylation and NO synthesis in primary cultured vasoendothelial cells. Thus, these data demonstrate for the first time that fucoidan protects vasoendothelial function and reduces basal blood pressure in type 2 diabetes rats via, at least in part, preservation of eNOS function. Fucoidan is therefore a potential candidate drug for protection of endothelium in diabetic cardiovascular complications.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of combined therapy using Sorafenib and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) with curative intent for all detectable lesions in patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) Stage 0-B1 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight patients with HCC from 12 centers were enrolled in this retrospective study; 64 patients who received Sorafenib plus RFA (Sorafenib-RFA) were compared with a control group treated with RFA alone. The two patient groups were selected with a predefined criterion and matched in terms of their clinical and tumor characteristics at baseline. The primary end point of the study was the incidence of post-RFA HCC recurrence. Secondary end points were overall survival (OS) and treatment toxicity. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 134.1 weeks, 49 patients died and 79 survived. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year cumulative incidences of post-RFA recurrence were 40.5%, 62.9%, and 74.5%, respectively, in the Sorafenib-RFA group, and 62.8%, 85.4%, and 92.7%, respectively, in the RFA group. The 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-year OS rates were 85.6%, 64.0%, 58.7%, and 50.3%, respectively, in the Sorafenib-RFA group, and 80.7%, 47.2%, 30.9%, and 30.9%, respectively, in the RFA group. Thus, the Sorafenib-RFA group exhibited better survival than the RFA alone group. CONCLUSIONS: Combined therapy with Sorafenib-RFA was associated with a lower incidence of post-RFA recurrence and better OS than RFA alone in patients with BCLC Stage 0-B1 HCC. Although these findings suggest that Sorafenib and RFA is safe and effective for the treatment of early HCC, prospective and randomized controlled trials are needed to validate them.

Background: Lifestyle modification based on exercise intervention is still the primary way to delay or reverse the development of diabetes in patients with prediabetes. However, there are still challenges in setting up a detailed exercise prescription for people with prediabetes. This study mainly ranks exercise prescriptions by comparing the improvement of glucose and lipid metabolism and the level of weight loss in patients. Method: All studies on exercise intervention in prediabetes were identified by searching five electronic databases. Risk assessment and meta-analysis were performed on eligible studies. Results: Twenty-four studies involving 1946 patients with prediabetes and seven exercise intervention models were included in the final analysis. The meta-analysis showed that exercise of any type was more effective for glycemic control in prediabetes than no exercise. However, the changes in blood glucose were moderate. In prediabetes, combining moderate-intensity aerobic exercise with low-to moderate-load resistance training showed the most significant improvements in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), body weight (BW), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) (P-score=0.82; 0.70; 0.87; 1; 0.99), low-to moderate-load resistance training showed the most significant improvements in fasting blood glucose (FBG) (P-score=0.98), the vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise showed the most significant improvements in 2-hour post-meal blood glucose (2hPG) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (P-score=0.79; 0.78), and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise showed the most significant improvements in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P-score=0.78). Conclusion: In summary, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, low-to moderate-load resistance training and the combination of both have beneficial effects on glycemic control, weight loss, and cardiovascular health in patients with prediabetes. These findings provide valuable guidance for rehabilitation clinicians and patients alike to follow. Integrating cavity-enhanced colloidal quantum dots (QDs) into photonic chip devices would be transformative for advancing room-temperature optoelectronic and quantum photonic technologies. However, issues with efficiency, stability, and cost remain formidable challenges to reach the single antenna limit. Here, we present a bottom-up approach that delivers single QD-plasmonic nanoantennas with electrical addressability. These QD nanojunctions exhibit robust photoresponse characteristics, with plasmonically enhanced photocurrent spectra matching the QD solution absorption. We demonstrate electroluminescence from individual plasmonic nanoantennas, extending the device lifetime beyond 40 min by utilizing a 3 nm electron-blocking polymer layer. In addition, we reveal a giant voltage-dependent redshift of up to 62 meV due to the quantum-confined Stark effect and determine the exciton polarizability of the CdSe QD monolayer to be 4 × 10-5 meV/(kV/cm)2. These developments provide a foundation for accessing scalable quantum light sources and high-speed, tunable optoelectronic systems operating under ambient conditions.

Improving the activity of uricase and lowering its immunogenicity remain significant challenges in the enzyme replacement management of hyperuricemia and related inflammatory diseases. Herein, an immunogenicity-masking strategy based on engineered red blood cells (RBCs) was developed for effective uricase delivery against both hyperuricemia and gout. The dynamic membrane of RBCs enabled high resistance to protease inactivation and hydrogen peroxide accumulation. Benefiting from these advantages, a single infusion of RBC-loaded uricase (Uri@RBC) performed prolonged blood circulation and sustained hyperuricemia management. Importantly, RBCs masked the immunogenicity of uricase, leading to the maintenance of UA-lowering performance after repeated infusion through reduced antibody-mediated macrophage clearance. In an acute gout model, Uri@RBC profoundly alleviated joint edema and inflammation with minimal systemic toxicity. This study supports the employment of immunogenicity-masking tools for efficient and safe enzyme delivery, and this strategy may be leveraged to improve the usefulness of enzyme replacement therapies for managing a wide range of inflammatory diseases.

The molecule-metal interface is of paramount importance for many devices and processes, and directly involved in photocatalysis, molecular electronics, nanophotonics, and molecular (bio-)sensing. Here the photostability of this interface is shown to be sensitive even to room light levels for specific molecules and metals. Optical spectroscopy is used to track photoinduced migration of gold atoms when functionalised with different thiolated molecules that form uniform monolayers on Au. Nucleation and growth of characteristic surface metal nanostructures is observed from the light-driven adatoms. By watching the spectral shifts of optical modes from nanoparticles used to precoat these surfaces, we identify processes involved in the photo-migration mechanism and the chemical groups that facilitate it. This photosensitivity of the molecule-metal interface highlights the significance of optically induced surface reconstruction. In some catalytic contexts this can enhance activity, especially utilising atomically dispersed gold. Conversely, in electronic device applications such reconstructions introduce problematic aging effects.

Bone fracture repair is a multiphased regenerative process requiring paracrine intervention throughout the healing process. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a crucial role in cell-to-cell communication and the regeneration of tissue, but their transplantation is difficult to regulate. The paracrine processes that occur in MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) have been exploited for this study. The primary goal was to determine whether EVs secreted by TGF-ß1-stimulated MSCs (MSCTGF-ß1-EVs) exhibit greater effects on bone fracture healing than EVs secreted by PBS-treated MSCs (MSCPBS-EVs). Our research was conducted using an in vivo bone fracture model and in vitro experiments, which included assays to measure cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis, as well as in vivo and in vitro gain/loss of function studies. In this study, we were able to confirm that SCD1 expression and MSC-EVs can be induced by TGF-ß1. After MSCTGF-ß1-EVs are transplanted in mice, bone fracture repair is accelerated. MSCTGF-ß1-EV administration stimulates human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) angiogenesis, proliferation, and migration in vitro. Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate that SCD1 plays a functional role in the process of MSCTGF-ß1-EV-mediated bone fracture healing and HUVEC angiogenesis, proliferation, and migration. Additionally, using a luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation studies, we discovered that SREBP-1 targets the promoter of the SCD1 gene specifically. We also discovered that the EV-SCD1 protein could stimulate proliferation, angiogenesis, and migration in HUVECs through interactions with LRP5. Our findings provide evidence of a mechanism whereby MSCTGF-ß1-EVs enhance bone fracture repair by regulating the expression of SCD1. The use of TGF-ß1 preconditioning has the potential to maximize the therapeutic effects of MSC-EVs in the treatment of bone fractures.

Hemp seed, the dried fruit of Cannabis sativa L. (Moraceae), has been extensively documented as a folk source of food due to its nutritional and functional value. This study evaluated the antidepressant effect of hemp seed oil (HSO) during its estrogen-like effect in Perimenopausal depression (PMD) rats induced by ovariectomy combined with chronic unpredictable mild stress (OVX-CUMS). Female SD rats (SPF, 10 weeks, sham operated group, ovariectomy (OVX) model group, ovariectomy - chronic unpredictable mild stress (OVX-CUMS) group, HSO + OVX-CUMS group, fluoxetine (FLU) + OVX-CUMS group, n=8) were subjected to treatment with HSO (4.32 g/kg) or fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) for 28 days (20 mL/kg by ig). Sucrose preference test (SPT), forced swimming test (FST), open field test (OFT), estrogen receptor α (ERα) and estrogen receptor ß (ERß) expression, estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), cortisol (CORT), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), norepinephrine (NE), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA) levels are measured to evaluate the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The results showed that OVX-CUMS significantly decrease sucrose preference rate in SPT, increase immobility time in FST and OFT, and decrease movement distance and stand-up times in OFT. HSO treatment significantly improves depression-like behaviors, upregulates the expression of ERα and ERß, improves HPO axis function by increasing E2 levels and decreasing FSH and LH levels, reverses HPA axis hyperactivation by decreasing CORT, ACTH, and CRH levels, and upregulates NE, 5-HT, and 5HIAA levels in model rats. The findings suggested that HSO could improve depression-like behavior in OVX-CUMS rats by regulating HPO/HPA axis function and neurotransmitter disturbance.
