PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate a characteristic cerebellar hemisphere enhancement pattern on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that could aid in early and specific diagnosis of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pretreatment MR images of 57 patients with intracranial DAVFs between January 1, 2017, and February 28, 2023, were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 128 patients with confirmed alternative cerebellar lesions during the same period were included as a control group. All patients underwent enhanced MRI with a 3.0T scanner. The presence or absence of parallel enhanced linear striations on the surface of the cerebellar lesions was documented. Statistically significant differences were determined by the Fisher exact test. RESULTS: Cerebellar lesions were identified in 4 intracranial DAVF patients (7.0%). All 4 patients were male, with an average age of 64 years (range: 58-76 years). The pretreatment MR images of all 4 DAVF patients with cerebellar lesions demonstrated the characteristic tigroid enhancement pattern. Tortuous flow voids were present in the MR images of 3 of the 4 patients. Tigroid enhancement pattern was not observed in the remaining 53 intracranial DAVF patients and all control patients. The differences in the incidence of the pattern were significant (p=0.01). CONCLUSION: A characteristic tigroid enhancement pattern of the cerebellar hemisphere on MRI may aid in the early and specific diagnosis of intracranial DAVFs, allowing timely treatment and improving outcomes. CLINICAL IMPACT: The identification of a characteristic tigroid enhancement pattern on MRI for cerebellar hemisphere lesions holds significant promise for clinical practice. This pattern serves as a distinctive marker aiding in the early and specific diagnosis of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). Clinicians can now utilize this innovative finding to expedite diagnostic workflows, enabling timely intervention and management strategies. The incorporation of this novel imaging feature enhances diagnostic accuracy, potentially reducing misdiagnosis rates and preventing delays in treatment initiation. Ultimately, this advancement may lead to improved patient outcomes and quality of care in neurosurgical and neuroradiological practice.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of exercise training under hypoxia versus normoxia on cognitive function in clinical and non-clinical populations. DATA SOURCES: From inception to June 13th, 2022, a systematic search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. STUDY SELECTION: Randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of exercise under hypoxic vs normoxic on cognition in clinical and non-clinical populations were included. The systematic search generated 14,894 relevant studies, of which 12 were finally included. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers independently extracted data from included studies. Results were expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD). Each included study was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 1.0 (RoB1.0) tool. Finally, the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system was used to rate the certainty of evidence for each outcome. DATA SYNTHESIS: Overall, 12 studies with a total of 338 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled results suggested that hypoxia exercise had a small but not statistically significant positive effect on overall cognitive function (SMD=0.064, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.156-0.284, P=.567, very low-certainty evidence), when compared with normoxic exercise. Regarding the domain-specific cognitive functions, there was a medium and significant positive effect on memory (SMD=0.594, 95% CI: 0.068 to 1.120, P=.027, very low-certainty evidence), while effects on visuospatial function (SMD=0.490, 95% CI: -0.030 to 1.010, P=.065, very low-certainty evidence), attention (SMD=0.037, 95% CI: -0.340 to 0.414, P=.847, very low-certainty evidence), executive function (SMD=0.096, 95% CI: -0.268 to 0.460, P=.605, very low-certainty evidence), and processing speed (SMD=-0.145, 95% CI: -0.528 to 0.239, P=.459, very low-certainty evidence) were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The current pooled results revealed that hypoxic exercise was related to improved cognitive performance. Nevertheless, exercise under hypoxia did not have a significant advantage in cognitive promotion when compared with exercise under normoxia.

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence for the effectiveness of multicomponent exercise (an exercise program combining aerobic, endurance, balance, and flexibility exercises) on cognition, physical function, and activities of daily living in people with dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: We conducted this study under the guidance of a designated protocol (PROSPERO CRD42022324641). Pertinent randomized controlled trials were selected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library by 2 independent authors through May 2022. DATA EXTRACTION: Two authors independently extracted the data and assessed the quality of the included studies following the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Outcome data were extracted in a random effects model and estimated as Hedges' g and 95% confidence interval (CI). To validate specific results, the Egger test combined the Duval and Tweedie "trim and fill" method and sensitivity analysis with study removed were performed. DATA SYNTHESIS: A total of 21 publications were eligible for the quantitative analysis. In dementia, estimates of Hedges' g showed effects on global cognition (g=0.403; 95% CI, 0.168-0.638; P<.05), especially executive function (g=0.344; 95% CI, 0.111-0.577; P<.05), flexibility (g=0.671; 95% CI, 0.353-0.989; P<.001), agility and mobility (g=0.402; 95% CI, 0.089-0.714; P<.05), muscle strength (g=1.132; 95% CI, 0.420-1.845; P<.05), and activities of daily living (g=0.402; 95% CI, 0.188-0.615; P<.05). Also, a positive trend was observed in gait speed. Additionally, multicomponent exercise had positive effects on global cognition (g=0.978; 95% CI, 0.298-1.659; P<.05) and executive function (g=0.448; 95% CI, 0.171-0.726; P<.05) in patients with MCI. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the viability of multicomponent exercise as a management strategy for patients with dementia and MCI.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a complementary and alternative therapy which has shown protective effects on vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). However, the underlying mechanisms are not entirely understood. METHODS: Rat models of VCI were established with cerebral ischemia using occlusion of the middle cerebral artery or bilateral common carotid artery. The brain structure and function imaging were measured through animal MRI. miRNA expression was detected by chip and qPCR. Synaptic functional plasticity was detected using electrophysiological techniques. RESULTS: This study demonstrated the enhancement of Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) activity of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal in the entorhinal cortical (EC) and hippocampus (HIP) in response to EA treatment. miR-219a was selected and confirmed to be elevated in HIP and EC in VCI but decreased after EA. N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor1 (NMDAR1) was identified as the target gene of miR-219a. miR-219a regulated NMDAR-mediated autaptic currents, spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSC), and long-term potentiation (LTP) of the EC-HIP CA1 circuit influencing synaptic plasticity. EA was able to inhibit miR-219a, enhancing synaptic plasticity of the EC-HIP CA1 circuit and increasing expression of NMDAR1 while promoting the phosphorylation of downstream calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), improving overall learning and memory in VCI rat models. CONCLUSION: Inhibition of miR-219a ameliorates VCI by regulating NMDAR-mediated synaptic plasticity in animal models of cerebral ischemia.

INDETERMINATE DOMAIN (IDD) proteins, a family of transcription factors unique to plants, function in multiple developmental processes. Although the IDD gene family has been identified in many plants, little is known about it in moso bamboo. In this present study, we identified 32 PheIDD family genes in moso bamboo and randomly sequenced the full-length open reading frames (ORFs) of ten PheIDDs. All PheIDDs shared a highly conserved IDD domain that contained two canonical C2H2-ZFs, two C2HC-ZFs, and a nuclear localization signal. Collinearity analysis showed that segmental duplication events played an important role in expansion of the PheIDD gene family. Synteny analysis indicated that 30 PheIDD genes were orthologous to those of rice (Oryza sativa). Thirty PheIDDs were expressed at low levels, and most PheIDDs exhibited characteristic organ-specific expression patterns. Despite their diverse expression patterns in response to exogenous plant hormones, 8 and 22 PheIDDs responded rapidly to IAA and 6-BA treatments, respectively. The expression levels of 23 PheIDDs were closely related to the outgrowth of aboveground branches and 20 PheIDDs were closely related to the awakening of underground dormant buds. In addition, we found that the PheIDD21 gene generated two products by alternative splicing. Both isoforms interacted with PheDELLA and PheSCL3. Furthermore, both isoforms could bind to the cis-elements of three genes (PH02Gene17121, PH02Gene35441, PH02Gene11386). Taken together, our work provides valuable information for studying the molecular breeding mechanism of lateral organ development in moso bamboo.

BACKGROUND: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is widely planted around the world. Owing to continuous planting, ginger is seriously affected by soilborne fungi, bacteria, and nematodes. Although preplant soil fumigation is an effective prevention strategy of soilborne diseases, individual fumigant and technology could not provide effective control of ginger soilborne disease. In our research, different combinations of soil fumigants and seed rhizome treatments were evaluated by monitoring the soil pathogens population, ginger growth, yield, and estimation of economic benefits. RESULTS: Soil fumigation effectively reduced the population of soilborne pathogens, and chloropicrin had a better control effect on soilborne pathogens than dazomet did. Preplant soil fumigation and seed rhizome treatment not only provide good control of soilborne disease, but also reduced the incidence of plant foliar pest and disease. Average yield increase rate of seed rhizome treatment was 12.0%; the highest yield increase was 24.4%. The average cost of seed rhizome treatment only increased by about 2.86%, but the rate of net revenue increase for the seed rhizome treatment reached up to 19.1%. CONCLUSION: Seed rhizome treatment is a very cost-effective soilborne disease control technology. In the management of soilborne diseases, the combined application of soil fumigation and seed rhizome treatment can reduce the risk of crops infected by soilborne diseases and ensure high and stable crop yields. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale rural-to-urban migration has changed the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) in large Chinese cities. We estimated the contribution of TB importation, reactivation of latent infection, and local transmission to new TB cases in Shanghai, and compared the potential impact of intervention options. METHODS: We developed a transmission dynamic model of TB for Songjiang District, Shanghai, which has experienced high migration over the past 25 years. We calibrated the model to local demographic data, TB notifications, and molecular epidemiologic studies. We estimated epidemiological drivers as well as future outcomes of current TB policies and compared this base-case scenario with scenarios describing additional targeted interventions focusing on migrants or vulnerable residents. RESULTS: The model captured key demographic and epidemiological features of TB among migrant and resident populations in Songjiang District, Shanghai. Between 2020 and 2035, we estimate that over 60% of TB cases will occur among migrants and that approximately 43% of these cases will result from recent infection. While TB incidence will decline under current policies, we estimate that additional interventions-including active screening and preventive treatment for migrants-could reduce TB incidence by an additional 20% by 2035. CONCLUSIONS: Migrant-focused TB interventions could produce meaningful health benefits for migrants, as well as for young residents who receive indirect protection as a result of reduced TB transmission in Shanghai. Further studies to measure cost-effectiveness are needed to evaluate the feasibility of these interventions in Shanghai and similar urban centers experiencing high migration volumes.

In recent years, the problem of electromagnetic wave (EMW) pollution has attracted more and more attention with the development of science and technology. In order to solve this complex problem, the research and development of EMW-absorbing materials is crucial. The new absorbing materials should have the characteristics of light weight, high efficiency, wide bandwidth, environmental protection, oxidation resistance, and other characteristics. Traditional single-phase Ni materials exhibit remarkable ferromagnetic behavior and double-loss mechanisms (dielectric loss and magnetic loss), and are considered as efficient EMW absorbers. However, under the action of EMWs, especially in the GHz frequency band, Ni materials tend to produce an eddy current effect, which limits their application prospects. For Ni-based materials, there is much interest in modifying the composite materials by designing a hierarchical structure for their preparation. Traditional, single-phase, carbon-based materials have been widely used in related fields because of their light weight and good conductivity. However, a single-loss mechanism will affect the impedance matching of carbon materials, thus affecting their application in the field of absorbing waves. For carbon materials, people use them as a filler or matrix material to fabricate composites with metals, metal oxides, or polymer materials to obtain carbon-containing absorbing materials. This paper reviews the evaluation and design principles of the absorbing properties of EMW-absorbing materials. Then, the progress of modified single-phase Ni-based materials (designed materials with 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D structures), the development of carbon materials (carbon black, carbon nanotubes, carbon fiber, graphite oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and biomedical carbon), and the research progress of Ni-C composite materials (the composite material formed by nickel and carbon) are reviewed. The ultimate goal is to obtain absorbers with light weight, strong absorbing ability, and a wide frequency band. In particular, Ni-MXene, Ni-biomedical carbon, and Ni-multiphase carbon composites are the target direction for designing new and high efficiency EMW absorbers. Finally, the basic challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The signal peptides (SPs) of secretory proteins are frequently used or modified to guide recombinant proteins outside the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells. In the periplasmic space and extracellular environment, recombinant proteins are kept away from the intracellular proteases and often they can fold correctly and efficiently. Consequently, expression levels of the recombinant protein can be enhanced by the presence of a SP. However, little attention has been paid to the use of SPs with low translocation efficiency for recombinant protein production. In this paper, the function of the signal peptide of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry1Ia toxin (Iasp), which is speculated to be a weak translocation signal, on regulation of protein expression was investigated using fluorescent proteins as reporters. RESULTS: When fused to the N-terminal of eGFP or mCherry, the Iasp can improve the expression of the fluorescent proteins and as a consequence enhance the fluorescent intensity of both Escherichia coli and Bt host cells. Real-time quantitative PCR analysis revealed the higher transcript levels of Iegfp over those of egfp gene in E. coli TG1 cells. By immunoblot analysis and confocal microscope observation, lower translocation efficiency of IeGFP was demonstrated. The novel fluorescent fusion protein IeGFP was then used to compare the relative strengths of cry1Ia (Pi) and cry1Ac (Pac) gene promoters in Bt strain, the latter promoter proving the stronger. The eGFP reporter, by contrast, cannot indicate unambiguously the regulation pattern of Pi at the same level of sensitivity. The fluorescent signals of E. coli and Bt cells expressing the Iasp fused mCherry (ImCherry) were also enhanced. Importantly, the Iasp can also enhanced the expression of two difficult-to-express proteins, matrix metalloprotease-13 (MMP13) and myostatin (growth differentiating factor-8, GDF8) in E. coli BL21-star (DE3) strain. CONCLUSIONS: We identified the positive effects of a weak signal peptide, Iasp, on the expression of fluorescent proteins and other recombinant proteins in bacteria. The produced IeGFP and ImCherry can be used as novel fluorescent protein variants in prokaryotic cells. The results suggested the potential application of Iasp as a novel fusion tag for improving the recombinant protein expression.

BACKGROUND: In Arabidopsis, a long day flowering plant, CONSTANS (CO) acts as a transcriptional activator of flowering under long day (LD) condition. In rice, a short day flowering plant, Hd1, the ortholog of CO, plays dual functions in respond to day-length, activates flowering in short days and represses flowering in long days. In addition, alleles of Hd1 account for ~ 44% of the variation in flowering time observed in cultivated rice and sorghum. How does it work in bamboo? The function of CO in bamboo is similar to that in Arabidopsis? RESULTS: Two CO homologous genes, PvCO1 and PvCO2, in Phyllostachys violascens were identified. Alignment analysis showed that the two PvCOLs had the highest sequence similarity to rice Hd1. Both PvCO1 and PvCO2 expressed in specific tissues, mainly in leaf. The PvCO1 gene had low expression before flowering, high expression during the flowering stage, and then declined to low expression again after flowering. In contrast, expression of PvCO2 was low during the flowering stage, but rapidly increased to a high level after flowering. The mRNA levels of both PvCOs exhibited a diurnal rhythm. Both PvCO1 and PvCO2 proteins were localized in nucleus of cells. PvCO1 could interact with PvGF14c protein which belonged to 14-3-3 gene family through B-box domain. Overexpression of PvCO1 in Arabidopsis significantly caused late flowering by reducing the expression of AtFT, whereas, transgenic plants overexpressing PvCO2 showed a similar flowering time with WT under LD conditions. Taken together, these results suggested that PvCO1 was involved in the flowering regulation, and PvCO2 may either not have a role in regulating flowering or act redundantly with other flowering regulators in Arabidopsis. Our data also indicated regulatory divergence between PvCOLs in Ph. violascens and CO in Arabidopsis as well as Hd1 in Oryza sativa. Our results will provide useful information for elucidating the regulatory mechanism of COLs involved in the flowering. CONCLUSIONS: Unlike to the CO gene in Arabidopsis, PvCO1 was a negative regulator of flowering in transgenic Arabidopsis under LD condition. It was likely that long period of vegetative growth of this bamboo species was related with the regulation of PvCO1.

In this article, composites consisting of porous Ni cores coated with boehmite/nickel aluminum oxide nanoflakes were successfully prepared by a versatile method. The crystal constituents and shapes of the boehmite/nickel aluminum oxide nanoflakes were strongly influenced by reaction temperature, and their microwave absorption properties were investigated in terms of complex permittivity and permeability. The results reveal that the composites comprising porous Ni cores coated with boehmite/nickel aluminum oxide synthesized at 180 °C present superior absorption properties. The optimal reflection loss is -44.3 dB (>99.99% attenuation) at 14.4 GHz, and the effective absorption (below -10 dB) bandwidth can be monitored in the frequency range of 5.8-18.0 GHz for an absorber with thickness in the range of 1.5-3.5 mm. The high dissipation capability, good impedance match and multiple reflection of the porous flaky structure are responsible for the improvement in microwave absorption. Moreover, a new absorption mechanism was proposed for the porous structure. In this mechanism, the porous structure serves as a spreading container, which attenuates electromagnetic energy by prolonging the travel path and constrains waves in the void space to gradually consume energy. This method paves a new avenue to design porous magnetic-dielectric absorbing materials.

The objective of this study is to investigate how the change of hormone receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2) status is related to patients' clinical features. One hundred ninety-three cases of patients treated at general hospital of PLA from 2000 to 2015 with advanced breast cancer were included. All patients developed recurrence that were re-biopsied and had complete pathological profile both at initial diagnosis and at relapse. HR status before and after relapse were available for all patients, while only 143 cases had Her-2 status at the two stages. The changes of ER, PR, and Her-2 status and their association with clincopathological factors and DFS were analyzed. The discordant rates of ER, PR, and Her-2 status between primary breast cancer and recurrent tumor were 34.2, 38.3, and 16.8 %, respectively. At relapse, the rates of gain of ER and PR positivity were 10.9 and 13.5 %, respectively; the rates of loss of ER and PR positivity were 23.3 and 24.9 %. Loss of positivity was more frequent than gain of positivity (p ER < 0.000, p PR = 0.001). Among patients with Her-2 negative primary tumors, 15.4 % acquired Her-2 positivity at relapse; and among Her-2 positive patients at initial diagnosis, 1.4 % turned to Her-2 negative at relapse; gain of positivity was more frequent than loss of positivity (p < 0.000). Patients with tumor larger than 2 cm in diameter were more likely to experience change of Her-2 status (25.0 vs 5.8 %, p = 0.005). Yet, the change of ER/PR was not significantly associated with the size of primary tumor. Patients with ER positive recurrent disease and PR positive primary tumor had a DFS of more than 40 months. Compared to patients who maintained PR negative, patients who gained PR positivity at relapse had significantly longer DFS by 8.5 % (35.2 vs 26.7 months, p = 0.024). Patients losing ER positivity at relapse had shorter DFS by 7.8 months compared to those with stable ER positive tumors; patients gaining ER positivity experienced longer DFS by 8.3 months; but both differences were not statistically significant. Loss of Her-2 positivity was associated with longer DFS by 13.8 months as opposed to stable Her-2 status, without statistical significance. For patients with Her-2 negative primary tumor, the changes of Her-2 status were not associated with DFS. 34.2, 38.3, and 16.8 % of breast cancer patients had their ER, PR, and Her-2 status changed after recurrence, and these changes of receptor status were associated with DFS to some degree. Gain of PR positivity at relapse was significantly correlated with longer DFS.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the asymmetry of quantitative cerebral blood flow (CBF) values in interictal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients with (TLE-MTS) and without (TLE-no) mesial temporal sclerosis. METHODS: Twenty-six TLE patients (14 TLE-MTS/12 TLE-no) and 22 controls were studied with a three-dimensional whole-brain pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling technique at 3.0 Tesla. Regions of interest were placed at the bilateral hippocampal heads, amygdalas and temporal lobes to get the average regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and calculate asymmetry indices (AIs). Statistical parametric mapping detected the whole-brain CBF changes of the two subgroups (right-sided). RESULTS: AIs of the hippocampus and amygdala in TLE-MTS and AIs of hippocampus in TLE-no were significantly different versus controls (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.013). The lateralizing sensitivity increased to 96.154% by combining structural MRI and AIs of rCBF with optimal cutoff values. Hypoperfusion regions in the right TLE-MTS mainly clustered in the bilateral temporal lobes, frontal lobes, insular lobes, and left caudate nucleus. The right TLE-no showed hypoperfusion in the bilateral temporal lobes, frontal lobes, right insular lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and caudate nucleus. CONCLUSION: Asymmetry of CBF in the TLE-MTS and TLE-no is different and improves MRI performance in lateralizing the TLE.

Sepsis is an excessive inflammatory condition with a high mortality rate and limited prediction and therapeutic options. In this study, for the first time, to our knowledge, we found that downregulation and/or blockade of T cell Ig and mucin domain protein 3 (Tim-3), a negative immune regulator, correlated with severity of sepsis, suggesting that Tim-3 plays important roles in maintaining the homeostasis of sepsis in both humans and a mouse model. Blockade and/or downregulation of Tim-3 led to increased macrophage activation, which contributed to the systemic inflammatory response in sepsis, whereas Tim-3 overexpression in macrophages significantly suppressed TLR-mediated proinflammatory cytokine production, indicating that Tim-3 is a negative regulator of TLR-mediated immune responses. Cross-talk between the Tim-3 and TLR4 pathways makes TLR4 an important contributor to Tim-3-mediated negative regulation of the innate immune response. Tim-3 signaling inhibited LPS-TLR4-mediated NF-κB activation by increasing PI3K-AKT phosphorylation and A20 activity. This negative regulatory role of Tim-3 reflects a new adaptive compensatory and protective mechanism in sepsis victims, a finding of potential importance for modulating innate responses in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma synoviae is an avian pathogen that can lead to respiratory tract infections and arthritis in chickens and turkeys, resulting in serious economic losses to the poultry industry. Enolase reportedly plays important roles in several bacterial pathogens, but its role in M. synoviae has not been established. Therefore, in this study, the enolase encoding gene (eno) of M. synoviae was amplified from strain WVU1853 and expressed in E. coli BL21 cells. Then the enzymatic activity, immunogenicity and binding activity with chicken plasminogen (Plg) and human fibronectin (Fn) was evaluated. RESULTS: We demonstrated that the recombinant M. synoviae enolase protein (rMsEno) can catalyze the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate (2-PGA) to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP), the Km and Vmax values of rMsEno were 1.1 × 10(-3) M and 0.739 µmol/L/min, respectively. Western blot and immuno-electron microscopy analyses confirmed that enolase was distributed on the surface and within the cytoplasm of M. synoviae cells. The binding assays demonstrated that rMsEno was able to bind to chicken Plg and human Fn proteins. A complement-dependent mycoplasmacidal assay demonstrated that rabbit anti-rMsEno serum had distinct mycoplasmacidal efficacy in the presence of complement, which also confirmed that enolase was distributed on the surface of M. synoviae. An inhibition assay showed that the adherence of M. synoviae to DF-1 cells pre-treated with Plg could be effectively inhibited by treatment with rabbit anti-rMsEno serum. CONCLUSION: These results reveal that M. synoviae enolase has good catalytic activity for conversion of 2-PGA to PEP, and binding activity with chicken Plg and human Fn. Rabbit anti-rMsEno serum displayed an obvious complement-dependent mycoplasmacidal effect and adherent inhibition effect. These results suggested that the M. synoviae enolase plays an important role in M. synoviae metabolism, and could potentially impact M. synoviae infection and immunity.

BACKGROUND: Breast carcinoma with choriocarcinomatous features (BCCF) is a rare variant of breast cancer, characterized by high expression of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in cancer cells such as multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast-like giant cells. The first case of BCCF was reported in 1981 by Saigo and Rosen. Only one case of BCCF was reported to show no component of breast ductal carcinoma, and only partially cancer cells, such as multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast-like giant cells, expressed HCG in all previous BCCF cases. Here, we report the first BCCF case without any component of breast ductal carcinoma in which HCG was found to express in all cancer cells. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old female patient presented with a small lump in her left breast 3 years prior. The mass was clinically suspected to be breast infiltrating ductal carcinoma based on breast excisional biopsy and magnetic resonance imaging findings. Due to rupture and bleeding of the left kidney, the left kidney excisional biopsy was performed. After a retrospective analysis of the initial excised breast cancer and breast cancer metastatic to the kidney, the cancer cells were positive for HCG by immunohistochemistry, and multinucleated or mononucleated giant cells resembled syncytiotrophoblastic and cytotrophoblastic cells which could be seen in a background of poor differentiated breast carcinoma and extensive necrosis and hemorrhage in the lesion. Thus, a final diagnosis of BCCF and BCCF metastatic to the kidney was made. After combination of surgical resection (the affected left breast and left kidney wereremoved) and consecutive chemotherapy consisting of docetaxel, epirubicin, cisplatin, lobaplatin, and capecitabine, the patient achieved favorable therapeutic efficacy (the HCG level returned to normal values, the metastatic lesions in the lungs disappeared, and the survival was 37 months). Capecitabine was very efficient and highly recommended due to its superior efficacy in reducing the HCG level and eliminating the metastatic lesions in the lungs. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a rare case of BCCF without any component of breast ductal carcinoma, featured by high expression of HCG in all cancer cells. Combination of surgery and chemotherapy (especially capecitabine) achieved a favorable therapeutic efficacy.

Peanuts, sourced from various regions, exhibit noticeable differences in quality owing to the impact of their natural environments. This study proposes a fast and nondestructive detection method to identify peanut quality by combining an electronic nose system with a hyperspectral system. First, the electronic nose and hyperspectral systems are used to gather gas and spectral information from peanuts. Second, a module for extracting gas and spectral information is designed, combining the lightweight multi-head transposed attention mechanism (LMTA) and convolutional computation. The fusion of gas and spectral information is achieved through matrix combination and lightweight convolution. A hybrid neural network, named UnitFormer, is designed based on the information extraction and fusion processes. UnitFormer demonstrates an accuracy of 99.06 %, a precision of 99.12 %, and a recall of 99.05 %. In conclusion, UnitFormer effectively distinguishes quality differences among peanuts from various regions, offering an effective technological solution for quality supervision in the food market.

Massive blood loss due to injury is the leading cause of prehospital deaths in disasters and emergencies. Hemostatic materials are used to realize rapid hemostasis and protect patients from death. Researchers have designed and developed a variety of hemostatic materials. However, in addition to their hemostatic effect, hemostatic materials must be endowed with additional functions to meet the practical application requirements in different scenarios. Here, strategies for modifications of hemostatic materials for use in different application scenarios are listed: effective positioning at the site of deep and narrow wounds to stop bleeding, resistance to high blood pressure and wound movement to maintain wound formation, rapid and easy removal from the wound without affecting further treatment after hemostasis is completed, and continued function when retained in the wound as a dressing (such as antibacterial, antiadhesion, tissue repair, etc.). The problems encountered in the practical use of hemostatic materials and the strategies and progress of researchers will be further discussed in this review. We hope to provide valuable references for the design of more comprehensive and practical hemostatic materials.

Background: Crush Syndrome (CS), a severe trauma resulting from prolonged muscle compression, is commonly seen in large-scale disasters such as earthquakes. It not only causes localized tissue damage but also triggers electrolyte imbalances, particularly hyperkalemia, increasing the risk of early mortality. This study aims to assess the early intervention effects of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate (SZC) on hyperkalemia in rat CS model. Methods: A rat CS model was established using a self-developed multi-channel intelligent small-animal crush injury platform. Rats in the experimental groups were treated with varying doses of SZC before compression and immediately post-decompression. The efficacy of SZC was evaluated by continuous monitoring of blood potassium levels and survival rates. Serum creatinine (Cre) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were analyzed, and renal damage was assessed through histopathological examination. Results: SZC treatment significantly reduced blood potassium levels and improved survival rates in rats. Compared to the placebo group, the SZC-treated rats showed a significant decrease in blood potassium levels at 6 and 12 h post-decompression, maintaining lower levels at 24 h. Biochemical analysis indicated no significant impact of SZC on renal function, with no notable differences in Cre and BUN levels between groups. Histopathological findings revealed similar levels of renal damage in both groups. Conclusion: SZC demonstrates significant early intervention effects on hyperkalemia in a rat model of crush injury, effectively improving survival rates without adverse effects on renal function. These results provide a new strategic direction for the clinical treatment of Crush Syndrome and lay the foundation for future clinical applications.

AIMS: Nerve growth factor (NGF) loss is a potential factor for the degeneration of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs) in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Rab5a is a key regulatory molecule of NGF signaling transduction. Here, we investigated the changes of Rab5a in 5 × FAD mice and further explored the mechanism of Electroacupuncture (EA) treatment in improving cognition in the early stage of AD. METHODS: The total Rab5a and Rab5a-GTP in 5-month-old 5 × FAD mice and wild-type mice were detected using WB and IP technologies. 5 × FAD mice were treated with EA at the Bai hui (DU20) and Shen ting (DU24) acupoints for 4 weeks and CRE/LOXP technology was used to confirm the role of Rab5a in AD mediated by EA stimulation. The Novel Object Recognition and Morris water maze tests were used to evaluate the cognitive function of 5 × FAD mice. The Nissl, immunohistochemistry, and Thioflavin S staining were used to observe pathological morphological changes in the basal forebrain circuit. The Golgi staining was used to investigate the synaptic plasticity of the basal forebrain circuit and WB technology was used to detect the expression levels of cholinergic-related and NGF signal-related proteins. RESULTS: The total Rab5a was unaltered, but Rab5a-GTP increased and the rab5a-positive early endosomes appeared enlarged in the hippocampus of 5 × FAD mice. Notably, EA reduced Rab5a-GTP in the hippocampus in the early stage of 5 × FAD mice. EA could improve object recognition memory and spatial learning memory by reducing Rab5a activity in the early stage of 5 × FAD mice. Moreover, EA could reduce Rab5a activity to increase NGF transduction and increase the levels of phosphorylated TrkA, AKT, and ERK in the basal forebrain and hippocampus, and increase the expression of cholinergic-related proteins, such as ChAT, vAchT, ChT1, m1AchR, and m2AchR in the basal forebrain and ChAT, m1AchR, and m2AchR in the hippocampus, improving synaptic plasticity in the basal forebrain hippocampal circuit in the early stage of 5 × FAD mice. CONCLUSIONS: Rab5a hyperactivation is an early pathological manifestation of 5 × FAD mice. EA could suppress Rab5a-GTP to promote the transduction of NGF signaling, and enhance the synaptic plasticity of the basal forebrain hippocampal circuit improving cognitive impairment in the early stage of 5 × FAD mice.
