RESUMO

We have searched for periodic variations of the electronic recoil event rate in the (2-6) keV energy range recorded between February 2011 and March 2012 with the XENON100 detector, adding up to 224.6 live days in total. Following a detailed study to establish the stability of the detector and its background contributions during this run, we performed an unbinned profile likelihood analysis to identify any periodicity up to 500 days. We find a global significance of less than 1σ for all periods, suggesting no statistically significant modulation in the data. While the local significance for an annual modulation is 2.8σ, the analysis of a multiple-scatter control sample and the phase of the modulation disfavor a dark matter interpretation. The DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation interpreted as a dark matter signature with axial-vector coupling of weakly interacting massive particles to electrons is excluded at 4.8σ.

RESUMO

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a process that violates lepton number conservation. It is predicted to occur in extensions of the standard model of particle physics. This Letter reports the results from phase I of the Germanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy) searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of the isotope (76)Ge. Data considered in the present analysis have been collected between November 2011 and May 2013 with a total exposure of 21.6 kg yr. A blind analysis is performed. The background index is about 1 × 10(-2) counts/(keV kg yr) after pulse shape discrimination. No signal is observed and a lower limit is derived for the half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of (76)Ge, T(1/2)(0ν) >2.1 × 10(25) yr (90% C.L.). The combination with the results from the previous experiments with (76)Ge yields T(1/2)(0ν)>3.0 × 10(25) yr (90% C.L.).

RESUMO

We present new experimental constraints on the elastic, spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross section using recent data from the XENON100 experiment, operated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 224.6 live days×34 kg of exposure acquired during 2011 and 2012 revealed no excess signal due to axial-vector WIMP interactions with 129Xe and 131Xe nuclei. This leads to the most stringent upper limits on WIMP-neutron cross sections for WIMP masses above 6 GeV/c², with a minimum cross section of 3.5×10(-40) cm² at a WIMP mass of 45 GeV/c², at 90% confidence level.

RESUMO

We report on a search for particle dark matter with the XENON100 experiment, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso for 13 months during 2011 and 2012. XENON100 features an ultralow electromagnetic background of (5.3 ± 0.6) × 10(-3) events/(keV(ee) × kg × day) in the energy region of interest. A blind analysis of 224.6 live days × 34 kg exposure has yielded no evidence for dark matter interactions. The two candidate events observed in the predefined nuclear recoil energy range of 6.6-30.5 keV(nr) are consistent with the background expectation of (1.0 ± 0.2) events. A profile likelihood analysis using a 6.6-43.3 keV(nr) energy range sets the most stringent limit on the spin-independent elastic weakly interacting massive particle-nucleon scattering cross section for weakly interacting massive particle masses above 8 GeV/c(2), with a minimum of 2 × 10(-45) cm(2) at 55 GeV/c(2) and 90% confidence level.

RESUMO

In present and future experiments in the field of rare events physics a background index of 10(-3) counts/(keV kg a) or better in the region of interest is envisaged. A thorough material screening is mandatory in order to achieve this goal. The results of a systematic study of radioactive trace impurities in selected materials using ultra low-level gamma-ray spectrometry in the framework of the GERDA experiment are reported.

RESUMO

We report the direct measurement of the 7Be solar neutrino signal rate performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The interaction rate of the 0.862 MeV 7Be neutrinos is 49+/-3stat+/-4syst counts/(day.100 ton). The hypothesis of no oscillation for 7Be solar neutrinos is inconsistent with our measurement at the 4sigma C.L. Our result is the first direct measurement of the survival probability for solar nu(e) in the transition region between matter-enhanced and vacuum-driven oscillations. The measurement improves the experimental determination of the flux of 7Be, pp, and CNO solar nu(e), and the limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment using solar neutrinos.

RESUMO

A modified system for the in vitro perfusion of isolated tubule segments is presented. The system consists of four holders each of which carries an acrylic cylinder. The acrylic cylinders are used to fix the glass pipettes in a concentric position. The four holders are mounted onto a support consisting of two holding pieces and three steel rods. Three of the holders contain ball-races so that they can slide on the rods with high accuracy and little friction. The holders to which the sylgard pipette and the perfusion pipette are attached are moved by electric motors. Compared with the classical V-track system this modification has the advantage of higher precision. Once the different pipettes are centered, concentricity is maintained even when the pipettes are moved forward or backward. Thus, this equipment facilitates the cannulation of tubules and increases the number of successful experiments.

RESUMO

AIMS: To investigate properties of the proteolytic activity of a yeast cell wall lytic soil bacterium identified as an Arthrobacter species. METHODS AND RESULTS: The organism was grown at pH 7.5 and 30 degrees C in shake flasks on media with different complex subtrates. Highest proteolytic activity assayed with azocaseine was detected in media with wheat gluten. In addition, l-leucine, l-alanine exopeptidase activity and esterase activity were found. The proteolytic activity showed stability up to pH 12, with a maximum at pH 11. The temperature optimum was at 55 degrees C, but there was a loss in enzyme activity of 50% within 2 h. The proteolytic activity was inhibited by 3,4-dichloroisocumarin, whereas there was little or no effect with EDTA, pepstatin A or E64. CONCLUSIONS: The proteolytic activity is highly alkaline stable. The formation of the enzyme can be induced by media with high protein content.

RESUMO

Free amino acid pools have been investigated in a citric acid accumulating strain of Aspergillus niger during batch growth under manganese sufficient and deficient conditions by means of an improved chromatographic method. Studies on the mycelial content of several nitrogenous compounds under manganese sufficient and deficient conditions showed that manganese deficiency resulted in lower amino acid pool sizes during trophophase and considerable accumulation during idiophase, and in a reduction of the protein and nucleic acid contents. Addition of cycloheximide to mycelia grown with sufficient manganese also caused an elevation of free amino acid pool sizes, thus indicating that impairment of protein synthesis by manganese deficiency is responsible for the observed rise in amino acid concentration. Furthermore it was observed that the manganese deficient mycelia excreted high amounts of all amino acids suggesting that manganese deficiency may also affect membrane permeability.
