RESUMO

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for seniors with depressive symptoms. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed. We conducted network meta-analysis in two ways, intervention classes (psychosocial, psychotherapy, physical activity, combined, treatment as usual) and individual intervention (11 categories). Whenever included studies used different scales, the different instruments were converted to the units of the scale most frequently used (the Geriatric Depression Scale), such that the effect size was reported as a mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). The risk of bias of RCTs included in this review was assessed according to the Cochrane Handbook. Bayesian NMA was conducted using R-3.4.0 software. Results: A total of 35 RCTs with 3,797 enrolled patients were included. Compared to conventional treatment, physical activity and psychotherapy resulted in significant improvements in depressive symptoms (MD: 2.25, 95%CrI: 0.99-3.56; SUCRA = 86.07%; MD: 1.75, 95% CrI: 0.90-2.64; SUCRA = 66.44%, respectively). Similar results were obtained for music (MD: 2.6; 95% CrI: 0.84-4.35;SUCRA = 80.53%), life review (MD:1.92; 95% CrI:0.71-3.14; SUCRA = 65.62%), cognitive behavioral therapy (MD: 1.27; 95% CrI: 0.23-2.38; SUCRA = 45.4%), aerobic (MD: 1.84; 95% CrI: 0.39-3.36; SUCRA = 63%) and resistance training (MD: 1.72; 95% CrI: 0.06-3.42; SUCRA = 59.24%). Network meta-regression showed that there were no statistically significant subgroup effects. Conclusions: Physical activity and psychotherapy demonstrated statistically significant superiority over conventional treatment. Music and life review therapy proved the most promising individual interventions. However, conclusions are limited by the lack of sufficient sample size and consensus regarding intervention categories and so an adequately powered study is necessary to consolidate these findings.

RESUMO

Microorganisms play a key role in degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can enhance microbial degradation of PAHs in soils. However, it is not clear how will the soil microbial community respond to addition of DOM during bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soils. In this study, DOMs derived from various agricultural wastes were applied to remediate the aging PAH-contaminated soils in a 90-day microcosm experiment. Results showed that the addition of DOMs offered a more efficient and persistent elimination of soil PAHs compared to the control which had no DOM addition. PAH removal effects were different among treatments with various DOMs; the addition of DOMs with high proportion of hydrophobic fraction could remove PAHs more efficiently from the soil. Low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs were more easily eliminated than that with high-molecular-weight (HMW). Addition of DOMs significantly increased abundance of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), pdo1, nah, and C12O genes and obviously changed community compositions of nah and C12O genes in different ways in the PAH-contaminated soil. Phylogenetic analyses of clone libraries exhibited that all of nah sequences and most of C12O sequences were affiliated into Gammaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria. These results suggested that external stimuli produced by DOMs could enhance the microbial degradation of PAHs in soils through not only solubilizing PAHs but also altering abundance and composition of indigenous microbial degraders. Our results reinforce the understanding of role of DOMs in mediating degradation of PAHs by microorganims in soils.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In addition to the non-specific symptomatology of ocular rosacea, currently, there are no reliable diagnostic tests for the disease, which may lead to its misdiagnosis. Here, we report a case of ocular rosacea presenting with multiple recurrent chalazion on both eyelids. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old female patient presented with multiple chalazion and dry eyes in both eyes, with no facial erythema. Initial management done were application of steroid eye ointment on both eyelids, hot compresses, and eyelid margin cleaning; noting that there was no relief of symptoms. Surgical excision of the chalazion was done on both eyes, however, bilateral recurrence occurred post-operatively. The pathological studies showed infiltration of a small amount of fibrous tissue with many chronic inflammatory cells. Immunohistochemistry studies were positive for LL-37. Resolution of the chalazion occurred after oral administration of doxycycline and azithromycin. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that ophthalmologists should recognize the ocular manifestations of skin diseases.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the effect of bicanalicular silicone tube intubation (BSTI) in the treatment of functional epiphora after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR). METHODS: Clinical data of 84 patients (95 eyes) with functional epiphora after En-DCR were retrospectively analyzed. Functional epiphora was confirmed as persistent or recurrent epiphora by fluorescein dye disappearance test (FDDT), lacrimal irrigation test, as well as endoscopic examination. Secondary BSTIs were recommended for patients with functional epiphora. These tubes were removed 1mo after surgery. Functional success and associated complications were assessed after 2y of follow-up. RESULTS: Seven patients (9 eyes) refused intervention, 5 patients (6 eyes) did not complete postoperative follow-up, and 1 patient (1 eye) developed tube prolapse within 1mo after surgery. Seventy-one patients (79 eyes) were included at last. Functional success ratios at six months, one year, as well as two years post-operation were 94.9% (75/79), 92.4% (73/79), and 91.1% (72/79), respectively. Three eyes presented with punctal slitting (2 eyes without epiphora), 1 eye with proximal canaliculus slitting, 1 eye with canaliculus stenosis and 4 eyes with still present functional epiphora without detectable abnormal at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Secondary intubation is an effective procedure with low recurrence probability for functional epiphora after En-DCR. Punctal and canaliculus injury are the main tube-associated complications after secondary intubation.

RESUMO

The intensity of crop farming fertilizer input is generally high in the Taihu Lake Region, with chemical fertilizer as the main form. Due to inappropriate fertilizer application, nitrogen and phosphorus loss have occurred, causing serious agricultural non-point source pollution. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China has launched the "zero-growth action for chemical fertilizer use" and "replacement action with organic fertilizer" ("two actions" for short) campaigns since 2015. Local agricultural sectors adjusted fertilizer application strategies of crop farming to respond to the call of two actions. However, the current research is still focusing on reducing the total amount of fertilizer application and increasing the area of organic fertilizer application, which is mainly based on grain crops. The study of agricultural environment problems is still lacking, especially in vegetable, orchard, and tea systems. Therefore, a study was carried out in the typical agricultural area of Suzhou City Wuzhong District from 2019 to 2021. Based on the data of the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus removal by harvest crops and soil nitrogen and phosphorus residual in paddy, vegetable, orchard, and tea systems, the loss was estimated. The responses of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from typical crop systems to fertilizer application strategy adjustments were studied through analysis of different factors. The results showed that fertilizer application rate was the key to control nitrogen and phosphorus loss. Additionally, the suitable replacement ratio of organic fertilizer could further reduce the loss risk. It should be noted that the urgent demand for nutrients in crop growth should be considered to determine the timing of organic fertilizer application, and agricultural machinery should be used to assist organic fertilizer application to reduce labor output if possible. Fertilizer efficiency was the core of environmental friendliness and economic benefits of crop farming. Hence, improving fertilizer efficiency should be the guidance of fertilizer application strategy adjustment. Our suggestions on the adjustment of fertilizer application strategy in different crop systems in the study area are as follows:attention should be paid to the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium input ratio in paddy systems to further reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loss. Planting structure adjustment should be emphasized in vegetable systems to promote fertilizer efficiency. The strategy to satisfy both tea and orchard growth from a composite system perspective would help to build crop systems that meet the needs of green agricultural development.

RESUMO

Multiple sclerosis is associated with structural and functional brain alterations leading to cognitive impairments across multiple domains including attention, memory, and the speed of information processing. The hippocampus, which is a brain important structure involved in memory, undergoes microstructural changes in the early stage of multiple sclerosis. In this study, we analyzed hippocampal function and structure in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and explored correlations between the functional connectivity of the hippocampus to the whole brain, changes in local brain function and microstructure, and cognitive function at rest. We retrospectively analyzed data from 20 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients admitted to the Department of Neurology at the China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University, China, from April 2015 to November 2019. Sixteen healthy volunteers were recruited as the healthy control group. All participants were evaluated using a scale of extended disability status and the Montreal cognitive assessment within 1 week before and after head diffusion tensor imaging and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Compared with the healthy control group, the patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis had lower Montreal cognitive assessment scores and regions of simultaneously enhanced and attenuated whole-brain functional connectivity and local functional connectivity in the bilateral hippocampus. Hippocampal diffusion tensor imaging data showed that, compared with the healthy control group, patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis had lower hippocampal fractional anisotropy values and higher mean diffusivity values, suggesting abnormal hippocampal structure. The left hippocampus whole-brain functional connectivity was negatively correlated with the Montreal cognitive assessment score (r = -0.698, P = 0.025), and whole-brain functional connectivity of the right hippocampus was negatively correlated with extended disability status scale score (r = -0.649, P = 0.042). The mean diffusivity value of the left hippocampus was negatively correlated with the Montreal cognitive assessment score (r = -0.729, P = 0.017) and positively correlated with the extended disability status scale score (r = 0.653, P = 0.041). The right hippocampal mean diffusivity value was positively correlated with the extended disability status scale score (r = 0.684, P = 0.029). These data suggest that the functional connectivity and presence of structural abnormalities in the hippocampus in patients with relapse-remission multiple sclerosis are correlated with the degree of cognitive function and extent of disability. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University, China (approval No. 201702202) on February 22, 2017.

RESUMO

As the water source for the Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MR-SNWD) of China, the Danjiangkou Reservoir (DJR) is in the process of ecosystem reassembly, but the composition, function, and assembly mechanisms of bacterioplankton communities are not yet clear. In this study, the composition, distribution characteristics and influencing factors of bacterioplankton communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing (HTS); PICRUSt2 was used to predict community function; a molecular ecological network was used to analyze bacterioplankton interactions; and the assembly process of bacterioplankton communities was estimated with a neutral model. The results indicated that the communities, function and interaction of bacterioplankton in the DJR had significant annual and seasonal variations and that the seasonal differences were greater than that the annual differences. Excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients in the DJR are the most important factors affecting water quality in the reservoir, N and P nutrients are the main factors affecting bacterial communities. Season is the most important factor affecting bacterioplankton N and P cycle functions. Ecological network analysis indicated that the average clustering coefficient and average connectivity of the spring samples were lower than those of the autumn samples, while the number of modules for the spring samples was higher than that for the autumn samples. The neutral model explained 66.3%, 63.0%, 63.0%, and 70.9% of the bacterioplankton community variations in samples in the spring of 2018, the autumn of 2018, the spring of 2019, and the autumn of 2019, respectively. Stochastic processes dominate bacterioplankton community assembly in the DJR. This study revealed the composition, function, interaction, and assembly of bacterioplankton communities in the DJR, providing a reference for the protection of water quality and the ecological functions of DJR bacterioplankton.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence from experimental and genetic studies suggest the existence of a potential link between the polymorphisms of human leukocyte antigen class II gene (HLA-DR) and ischemic stroke. This study addressed the association of HLA-DR gene with atherosclerotic cerebral infarction (ACI) in a North Chinese Han population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The genotyping of HLA-DRB1 was determined by standard techniques based on polymerase chain reaction and sequence-specific oligonucleotides hybridization in a gene chip. RESULTS: The relative risk (RR) of HLA-DRB1 FNx01 04 and HLA-DRB1 FNx01 03 (17) in patients with ACI and their first-degree relatives were significantly higher than those in the control group (RR=2.56 and 18.77, respectively; P <0.05). In contrast, the RR of HLA-DRB1 FNx01 12 was dramatically reduced in patients with ACI in relation to healthy controls (RR=0.17; P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that the polymorphisms in HLA-DRB1 may influence the risk of ACI in the North Han population of China. Further studies are necessary to validate the observation in larger samples.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the quality of life in patients with post-traumatic epilepsy and discuss the influencing factors. METHODS: We assessed 105 patients with post-traumatic epilepsy and 100 healthy people as control using Quality of Life Scale-31 (QOL-31), Self-rating Depressing Scale (SDS) and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and conducted retrospective analysis on the depression, anxiety, site of trauma, control of seizure, EEG and therapeutic compliance. RESULTS: Patients with post-traumatic epilepsy scored much lower than the control group on QOL-31 (P less than 0.01), but higher than the control group on SDS and SAS (P less than 0.01). Multiple regression analysis indicated that major influencing factors on the quality of life were anxiety, therapeutic compliance, depression, poor control of epileptic seizure and site of trauma. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of life in patients with post-traumatic epilepsy has significantly declined. Doctors should pay attention to psychological and mental problems of patients with epilepsy, such as depression and anxiety, enhancing therapeutic compliance and controlling epileptic seizure, which are the keys to improving prognosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are common in older adults and have a negative influence on their physical and mental health. General aerobic exercises (GAEs) have long been used in the treatment of sleep disorders as a non-pharmacological measure. However, there is no consensus on the efficacy of traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) for treating sleep disorders in older adults and the difference between TCEs and GAEs. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effects of TCEs and GAEs on the sleep quality of older adults and the differences between these two interventions. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China Biology Medicine disc, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science Journal Database and Wanfang Data were searched from their inception to August 2020. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of TCEs and GAEs on older adults with sleep disorders were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: Data were extracted by two researchers working independently. The risk bias of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 5.1.0 and the quality of evidence was assessed using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to estimate sleep quality. Meta-analyses were performed to assess the total PSQI score of the exercise intervention as the primary outcome, and the scores of subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication and daytime dysfunction were assessed as secondary outcomes. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were conducted to assess the contribution of covariables to heterogeneity. RESULTS: A total of 22 RCTs (including 1747 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. The results indicated that TCEs (weighted mean difference [WMD] = -2.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-2.82, -1.46], P < 0.001; heterogeneity: P < 0.001, I2 = 82%; 15 studies, n = 1063) and GAEs (WMD = -2.88, 95% CI [-5.22, -0.55], P < 0.001; heterogeneity: P < 0.001, I2 = 98%; 5 studies, n = 500) significantly improved total sleep quality, having favorable effects on subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication and daytime dysfunction. Subgroup analysis showed that TCEs demonstrated superiority after 12 weeks (WMD = -2.77, 95% CI [-4.26, -1.28], P < 0.001; heterogeneity: P < 0.001, I2 = 85%; 5 studies, n = 420) and Qigong had a greater intervention effect for improving the sleep quality of older adults than Tai Chi (WMD = -3.37, 95% CI [-4.38, -2.35], P < 0.001; heterogeneity: P = 0.04, I2 = 63%; 4 studies, n = 321). Meta-regression revealed that the year of publication, sample size, mean age of participants, and percentage of females in the primary studies did not account for the overall heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: Current evidence shows that both TCEs and GAEs, as complementary and non-pharmacological approaches, help to improve the sleep quality in older adults with potentially clinical implications; however, there was not enough evidence to conclude the difference between them. More rigorous and high-quality RCTs are needed to arrive at reliable conclusions.

RESUMO

The Laoguan River is the tributary of Danjiangkou Reservoir located nearest to the water diversion outlet, and water quality here directly affects the safety of the diverted water. To explore the community composition and functional change of bacterioplankton in the Laoguan River before and after the flood season, four representative sites were sampled in the main stream before (May) and after (October) the 2018 and 2019 flood seasons. Water quality was assessed and high-throughput sequencing of bacterioplankton was performed. Yanghe (YH) was slightly disturbed, Xixiabei (XX) was moderately disturbed, Dangziling (DZL) was heavily disturbed, and Zhangying (ZY) was moderately disturbed. In total, 599 genera from 40 phyla were collected. The diversity of bacterioplankton before the flood season was higher than afterwards, and moderate levels of disturbance increased the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. LEfSe analysis indicated that significant differences existed in some dominant phyla; Armatimonadete in Yanghe, Epsilonbacteraeota and Firmicutes in Xixiabei, and Cyanophyta in Dangziling dominated before flood season, while significant differences only occurred in Firmicutes and Cyanophyta in Dangziling after the flood season. The PCoA of the bacterioplankton community showed that the sampling points were distinct before and after the flood season, and that differences among samples were greater before the flood season. The RDA and CCA indicated that total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen were the main environmental factors causing declines in bacterioplankton diversity. PICRUSt showed a total of ten dominant categories of COG function genes. A total of 30 KO function genes related to nitrogen metabolism group also different between the two periods, with greater differences before flood season. The genes cynt and can in Yanghe were significant different from the other three sampling points before the flood season. Overall, nitrogen and phosphorus were the main factors regulating the bacterioplankton community structure and eutrophication in the Laoguan River. Changes in nitrogen inputs will result in changes in microbial nitrogen metabolic function in different regions of the river.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies pointed that being delivered by cesarean section (CS) would affect the health outcomes of offspring, however, whether CS would affect the risk of childhood leukemia remained uncertain. This study conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively evaluate whether being delivered by CS would influence the onset of childhood leukemia. METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched from 3rd June, 1950 to 13th October, 2019 to identify the literature, which examined the relationship between CS and childhood leukemia. This study used Newcastle-Ottawa Scale to assess the quality of literature. Subgroup analyses were conducted on region, mode of delivery, design of the study and number of confounders adjusted. Egger's test and Begg's test were performed to evaluate possible publication bias. RESULTS: The pooled odds ratio (OR) estimates illustrated that children delivered by CS had a higher risk of developing leukemia [OR 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.17, P = 0.002] and lymphoblastic leukemia (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.03-1.23, P = 0.009), while a significant association for myeloid leukemia was not observed (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.92-1.20, P = 0.451). Results of subgroup analyses indicated that elective CS would increase the risk of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.06-1.27, P = 0.002). However, a statistical relationship between emergency CS and lymphoblastic leukemia was not observed (OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.93-1.23, P = 0.364). CONCLUSIONS: CS would increase the risk of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia. It is worth noting that subgroup analyses shows that elective CS rather than emergency CS increases the risk of lymphoblastic leukemia in offspring.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Patients with advanced-stage cancer often suffer many physical and psychological symptoms. Exercise has been shown to improve quality of life (QoL), decrease cancer-related symptoms, and maintain or improve functional status in cancer survivors or patients with early stage cancer. However, the effect of exercise on these outcomes in patients with advanced-stage cancer is unclear. OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of exercise interventions for patients with advanced-stage cancer in improving cancer-related symptoms and functional status outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science from their inception to February 3, 2019, to include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise and usual care for improving outcomes in patients with advanced-stage cancer. Two reviewers independently screened the studies, extracted data of interest, and assessed the risk of bias of individual RCTs using the Cochrane Handbook, Version 5.1.0. RESULTS: About 15 RCTs enrolling 1208 patients were included. Compared with usual care, exercise showed a significant improvement in QoL (standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.22; 95% CI 0.06-0.38; P = 0.009), fatigue (SMD -0.25; 95% CI -0.45 to -0.04; P = 0.02), insomnia (SMD -0.36; 95% CI -0.56 to -0.17; P = 0.0002), physical function (SMD 0.22; 95% CI 0.05-0.38; P = 0.009), social function (SMD 0.18; 95% CI 0.02-0.34; P = 0.03), and dyspnea reduction (SMD -0.18; 95% CI -0.34 to -0.01; P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Exercise serves as an effective intervention to improve QoL and alleviate fatigue, insomnia, dyspnea, and physical and social functions for patients with advanced-stage cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Very few studies have been conducted regarding the optimal time interval between hysteroscopic adhesiolysis and the embryo transfer (ET). Investigation of this optimal time may be helpful for assisted reproductive technology. Therefore, we investigated effects of the interval between hysteroscopic adhesiolysis and ET upon in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle outcomes. METHODS: Patients were recruited between January 2014 and September 2017 at the Reproductive Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University. Patients who were diagnosed with intra-uterine adhesion (IUA) and underwent hysteroscopic adhesiolysis before fresh IVF-ET or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection cycles were classified into three groups according to the interval between hysteroscopic adhesiolysis and ET: less than 90 days (Group 1), 90 to 180 days (Group 2), and greater than 180 days (Group 3). Baseline characteristics, controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) response, and pregnancy outcomes after ET were compared. Analysis of variance or non-parametric tests were used to test numerical data. The Pearson's Chi-squared test was used to test categorical data. RESULTS: A total of 312 patients were recruited as follows: 112 in Group 1, 137 in Group 2, and 63 in Group 3. There were no differences in baseline and COS characteristics among the three groups. The live-birth rate in Group 2 (40.1%) was significantly higher than that in Group 1 (17.9%; χ = 14.545, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the rates of biochemical, ongoing, and clinical pregnancy, and biochemical and clinical pregnancy abortion, as well as stillbirth among the groups. In the mild IUA patients, the live-birth rate was significantly higher in Group 2 (42.6%) compared with Group 1 (22%; χ = 8.413, P = 0.004). In the moderate IUA patients, Group 2 (35.7%) had a higher frequency of live births than Group 1 (6.7%; χ = 8.187, P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The optimal waiting period for fresh ET after hysteroscopic adhesiolysis was 90 to 180 days in the current study.

RESUMO

Sensitive and comprehensive measurement of systemic metabolites of tryptophan, phenylalanine and glutamate metabolism in biological samples is effective for understanding the pathogenesis of depression and other neurological diseases. Therefore, this study developed an underivatized liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for simultaneous monitoring the 3 components of glutamate metabolism in rat hippocampus and 11 components of tryptophan and phenylalanine metabolism in rat hippocampus, plasma and urine, and applied it to investigate their changes in rats induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). The investigated analytes are as follows: tryptophan, serotonin, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, kynurenine, kynurenic acid, xanthurenic acid, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, quinolinic acid, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tyramine, glutamate, glutamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid. The method was verified to be sensitive and effective with satisfactory linearity, accuracies in the range of 78.2%-120.4%, and precisions less than 17.8% for all identified analytes. A series of significant changes in CUMS-induced rats can be detected: tryptophan, serotonin and tyrosine levels decreased and quinolinic acid increased in both hippocampus and plasma. In addition, the kynurenine/tryptophan ratios increased in hippocampus and plasma, the kynurenic acid/quinolinic acid ratios of plasma and urine were significantly reduced. These findings demonstrated that the CUMS procedure could lead to the central and peripheral imbalances of tryptophan and phenylalanine metabolism. In conclusion, a LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous measurement of several neurotransmitters in rat hippocampus, plasma and urine was developed and successfully applied to investigation of the central and peripheral changes in CUMS-induced rats. The method would be expected to provide applicability to the study of the mechanisms of depression and other related diseases associated with these neurotransmitters.

RESUMO

Surface soil samples collected from Nansi Lake catchment were analyzed for mercury (Hg) to determine its spatial trends and environmental impacts. Results showed that the average soil Hg contents were 0.043 mg kg-1. A positive correlation was shown between TOC and soil Hg contents. The main type of soil with higher TOC contents and lower pH values showed higher soil Hg contents. Soil TOC contents and CV values were both higher in the eastern catchment. The eastern part of the catchment, where the industry is developed, had relatively high soil Hg contents and a banding distribution of high Hg contents was corresponded with the southwest-northeast economic belt. Urban soils had higher Hg contents than rural soils. The urbanization pattern that soil Hg contents presented a decreasing trend from city center to suburb was shown clearly especially in the three cities. Soil Hg contents in Jining City showed a good consistency with the urban land expansion. The spatial trends of soil Hg contents in the catchment indicated that the type and the intensity of human activities have a strong influence on the distribution of Hg in soils. Calculated risk indices showed that the western part of the catchment presented moderately polluted condition and the eastern part of the catchment showed moderate to strong pollution level. The area with high ecological risk appeared mainly along the economic belt.

RESUMO

Soil microbes play a major role in ecological processes and are closely associated with the aboveground plant community. In order to understand the effects of vegetation type on the characteristics of soil microbial communities, the soil microbial communities were assessed by plate counts, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and Biolog microplate techniques in five plant communities, i.e., soybean field (SF), artificial turf (AT), artificial shrub (AS), natural shrub (NS), and maize field (MF) in Jinan, Shandong Province, North China. The results showed that plant diversity had little discernible effect on microbial biomass but a positive impact on the evenness of utilized substrates in Biolog microplate. Legumes could significantly enhance the number of cultural microorganisms, microbial biomass, and community catabolic diversity. Except for SF dominated by legumes, the biomass of fungi and the catabolic diversity of microbial community were higher in less disturbed soil beneath NS than in frequently disturbed soils beneath the other vegetation types. These results confirmed that high number of plant species, legumes, and natural vegetation types tend to support soil microbial communities with higher function. The present study also found a significant correlation between the number of cultured bacteria and catabolic diversity of the bacterial community. Different research methods led to varied results in this study. The combination of several approaches is recommended for accurately describing the characteristics of microbial communities in many respects.

RESUMO

We observed the characteristics of white matter fibers and gray matter in multiple sclerosis patients, to identify changes in diffusion tensor imaging fractional anisotropy values following white matter fiber injury. We analyzed the correlation between fractional anisotropy values and changes in whole-brain gray matter volume. The participants included 20 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and 20 healthy volunteers as controls. All subjects underwent head magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. Our results revealed that fractional anisotropy values decreased and gray matter volumes were reduced in the genu and splenium of corpus callosum, left anterior thalamic radiation, hippocampus, uncinate fasciculus, right corticospinal tract, bilateral cingulate gyri, and inferior longitudinal fasciculus in multiple sclerosis patients. Gray matter volumes were significantly different between the two groups in the right frontal lobe (superior frontal, middle frontal, precentral, and orbital gyri), right parietal lobe (postcentral and inferior parietal gyri), right temporal lobe (caudate nucleus), right occipital lobe (middle occipital gyrus), right insula, right parahippocampal gyrus, and left cingulate gyrus. The voxel sizes of atrophic gray matter positively correlated with fractional anisotropy values in white matter association fibers in the patient group. These findings suggest that white matter fiber bundles are extensively injured in multiple sclerosis patients. The main areas of gray matter atrophy in multiple sclerosis are the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, caudate nucleus, parahippocampal gyrus, and cingulate gyrus. Gray matter atrophy is strongly associated with white matter injury in multiple sclerosis patients, particularly with injury to association fibers.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the combination of fluorometholone 0.1% and levofloxacin 0.5% to tobramycin/dexamethasone eye drops in controlling inflammation and preventing infection after phacoemulsification with an intraocular lens implantation. METHODS: Sixty eyes from 60 patients undergoing cataract phacoemulsification were randomized into two groups; half of the patients were treated with fluorometholone (6 times/d) combined with levofloxacin (4 times/d), while the other half were treated with tobramycin/dexamethasone (4 times/d) eye drops for one week. Preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure, aqueous flare, corneal thickness, and signs and symptoms were recorded before the operation and 1wk following treatments. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in corneal thickness (P≥0.629), aqueous flare (P≥0.398), and signs and symptoms scores (P≥0.350) at each time point. Ocular hypertension was only observed in two eyes in the tobramycin/dexamethasone group. CONCLUSION: Fluorometholone combined with levofloxacin treatment shows comparable efficacy but without the tendency to increase intraocular pressure; thus, it might be a better regimen for postoperative use.

RESUMO

Primary dural lymphoma (PDL) refers to a lymphoma with epidural or subdural involvement and is a rare subtype of primary central nervous system lymphoma. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) presenting as PDL is extremely rare. The present study reports a case of PDL with skull and scalp involvement in a 56-year-old man. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that the tumor was located under the right parietal inner plate and was attached to the dura mater. Following contrast-enhanced MRI, markedly enhanced tumor signals were observed, and mild homogeneous enhancement was observed in the diploë and soft tissues under the scalp, near the parietal bone. Under general anesthesia, the patient underwent craniotomy and tumor resection. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was DLBCL. Tumors were additionally identified inside the skull and subcutaneous tissues. The patient was administered chemotherapy postoperatively, and the prognosis subsequent to the 4-year follow-up was favorable. Primary malignant lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of scalp masses and meningeal lesions. Early diagnosis and individualized treatment is closely associated with a favorable outcome.
