RESUMO

Research shows that women are less likely to enter competitions than men. This disparity may translate into a gender imbalance in holding leadership positions or ascending in organizations. We provide both laboratory and field experimental evidence that this difference can be attenuated with a default nudge-changing the choice to enter a competitive task from a default in which applicants must actively choose to compete to a default in which applicants are automatically enrolled in competition but can choose to opt out. Changing the default affects the perception of prevailing social norms about gender and competition as well as perceptions of the performance or ability threshold at which to apply. We do not find associated negative effects for performance or wellbeing. These results suggest that organizations could make use of opt-out promotion schemes to reduce the gender gap in competition and support the ascension of women to leadership positions.

RESUMO

Are individuals adept at perceiving others' emotions optimally adjusted? We extend past research by conducting a high-powered preregistered study that comprehensively tests five theoretical models of empathic accuracy (i.e., emotion-recognition ability) and self-views and intra- and interpersonal facets of adjustment in a sample of 1,126 undergraduate students from Canada and 2,205 informants. We obtained both self-reports and peer-reports of adjustment and controlled for cognitive abilities as a potential confounding variable. Empathic accuracy (but not self-views of that ability) was positively related to relationship satisfaction as rated by both participants and informants. Self-views about empathic accuracy (but not actual empathic accuracy) were positively related to life satisfaction as rated by both participants and informants. All associations held when we controlled for cognitive abilities.

RESUMO

Meaningful and long-lasting progress in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) continue to elude academics, practitioners, and policymakers. Extending Chater & Loewenstein's arguments to the EDI space, we argue that, despite conventional focus on individual-level solutions (i-frame), increasing EDI also requires a systemic focus (s-frame). We thus call for the design, testing, and implementation of multipronged s-frame interventions.

RESUMO

Although agents targeting B-cell receptor signaling have provided practice-changing results in relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), they require prolonged administration and provide incomplete responses. Given synergistic preclinical activity with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase δ and spleen tyrosine kinase inhibition, this phase 2 study evaluated the safety and efficacy of the combination of idelalisib and entospletinib. Eligible patients with relapsed or refractory CLL or NHL underwent intrapatient dose escalation with each agent. With a median treatment exposure of 10 weeks, 60% and 36% of patients with CLL or follicular lymphoma, respectively, achieved objective responses. However, the study was terminated early because of treatment-emergent pneumonitis in 18% of patients (severe in 11 of 12 cases). Although most patients recovered with supportive measures and systemic steroids, 2 fatalities occurred and were attributed to treatment-emergent pneumonitis. Increases of interferon-γ and interleukins 6, 7, and 8 occurred over time in patients who developed pneumonitis. Future studies of novel combinations should employ conservative designs that incorporate pharmacodynamics/biomarker monitoring. These investigations should also prospectively evaluate plasma cytokine/chemokine levels in an attempt to validate biomarkers predictive of response and toxicity. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT01796470.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Andecaliximab (ADX) is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits matrix metalloproteinase 9, an extracellular enzyme involved in matrix remodeling, tumor growth, and metastases. A phase I and Ib study of modified oxaliplatin, leucovorin, and fluorouracil (mFOLFOX6) with ADX revealed encouraging antitumor activity in patients with gastric or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This phase III, randomized, double-blinded, placebo (PBO)-controlled multicenter study investigated the efficacy and safety of mFOLFOX6 with and without ADX in patients with untreated human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma. Random assignment was 1:1 to mFOLFOX6 + ADX or mFOLFOX6 + PBO. ADX/PBO 800 mg was infused on days 1 and 15 of each 28-day cycle. Protocol therapy was given until disease progression or intolerance. The primary end point was overall survival (OS), and secondary end points were progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (RECIST 1.1), and safety. RESULTS: Between September 2015 and May 2017, 432 patients were randomly assigned, 218 to ADX and 214 to PBO. The median OS was 12.5 versus 11.8 months in the ADX and PBO groups, respectively. The median PFS was 7.5 versus 7.1 months in the ADX and PBO groups, respectively. The objective response rate was 51% in the ADX group and 41% in the PBO group. Among the subgroup analyses, patients of age ≥ 65 years had an improved OS and PFS with ADX versus PBO; the P values and CIs were not adjusted for multiplicity. There were no meaningful differences in the safety profile of the ADX versus PBO groups. CONCLUSION: The addition of ADX to mFOLFOX6 did not improve OS in unselected patients with untreated human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

Despite the popularity of the Ancient Greek maxim 'know thyself', the importance of self-insight for adjustment, or effective psychological functioning, remains unclear. Here we examined four perspectives about how cognitive and emotional abilities and self-views about these abilities relate to adjustment. We administered tests of cognitive and emotional abilities and assessed self-views about these abilities. Participants then completed daily diaries for a week to report multiple self-reported indicators of adjustment. We analysed data using polynomial regression and response surface analysis. We found no support for benefits of self-insight. The conditions to infer support for linear or curvilinear associations between abilities or self-views about these abilities and adjustment were also not met. The findings suggest that giving employees and students feedback about their cognitive and emotional abilities in organizations and in schools may not enhance their adjustment. We discuss the limitations of our study and offer suggestions for future research. PROTOCOL REGISTRATION: The stage 1 protocol for this Registered Report was accepted in principle on 21 June 2018. The protocol, as accepted by the journal, can be found at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.4283567.v1 .
