The occurrence, spatial distribution, seasonal variation, sources, and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in overlying water and surface sediments from Tiaozi River, which is an urban river running through the downtown of Siping City, a traditional industrial city of northeastern China, were investigated. The total PAH concentrations (ΣPAHs) in water varied from 473.5 to 2674.3 ng/L with a mean value of 1272.6 ng/L and ranged from 601.5 to 2906.3 ng/g with a mean value of 1534.4 ng/g in sediments. Both the individual and total PAH concentrations in water and sediments decreased from upstream to downstream, and the average ΣPAHs between the four seasons in water and sediments decreased in the following order of winter> autumn> spring> summer. The composition of the PAHs was characterized by an abundance of PAHs from 2 rings to 4 rings, and the predominant components were naphthalene, chrysene, and benzo(a)anthracene. The identification of the source indicated that coal combustion could be the main contributor to the PAHs. The equivalent toxic concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene in the water ranged from 11.5 to 33.1 ng/L, which were much higher than the concentration limit, suggesting that PAHs in the water could cause potential risks. The risk assessment of PAHs in sediments also showed that PAHs could cause negative effects on aquatic organisms in this river.

Residents' satisfaction of urban green space has been widely detected in living environments around the world. Most previous reports were performed with objective indicators to reflect the characteristics of vegetation and landscapes of residential green space. However, subjective senses as impact factors in the evaluation of residents' satisfaction based on landsenses ecology are scarce. To address this, in this study, physical perception, aesthetic cognition, and psychological cognition as latent variables in a structural equation model were investigated to determine the residents' satisfaction in Xiamen, in southeast China, a famously high green space coverage region. The results indicate that physical perception is the fundamental condition to improve residents' satisfaction, while aesthetic cognition and psychological cognition are the direct factors that influenced residents' satisfaction. Residents exhibit a preference for the residential green space which contains more biodiversity and landscape diversity, a higher biomass, and greater openness. In addition, the residents' perception significantly related to greenspace characteristics. The results provide a scientific basis for urban green space planning and optimization of ecological resources' allocation.

Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and environment estrogens, as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), have been widely detected in aquatic environments around the world. However, surveys of seasonal freeze-thaw rivers with special hydrological features are limited. To address this, in this study the occurrence, distribution, ecological risk, and mass flux of 22 CECs in the Jilin Songhua River in northeast China, a famously seasonal freeze-thaw river at mid- and high-latitude regions, were investigated during its spring flood period. The results indicate that estriol had a maximum concentration of 27.4 ng·L-1 in the mainstream river water. Doxycycline had a maximum concentration of 204.4 ng·L-1 in the tributary river water and 103.0 ng·L-1 in the riverine wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. The mean concentrations of the targeted CECs in the spring flood were 1.4 times higher than those found in our previous investigation during the summer flood. A risk assessment showed that estrone posed a high risk in the mainstream, doxycycline posed a high risk in the tributaries, and ofloxacin posed a high risk in the riverine WWTP effluents. In addition, erythromycin and lincomycin posed a medium to high risk in the river water and WWTP effluents. The major contribution of the CECs in the mainstream came from its tributaries, which contributed a total of >50% in the spring flood period. The results suggest that some appropriate measures should be taken to reduce the contribution of the CECs from the tributaries to the seasonal freeze-thaw river in its spring flood period.

As a result of the widespread use of antibiotics, a large amount of excretions from human and animals, containing antibiotic residues, is discharged into aquatic environments, leading to potential adverse effects on the ecosystems' health. These residues' impact on seasonally ice-covered rivers remains under investigated. To understand the environmental fate of antibiotics with high-detection frequencies and concentration levels, sulfamethoxazole, lincomycin, and florfenicol were used as models in the present study. A Level IV fugacity model was established and applied to a seasonally ice-covered river receiving municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, the Songhua River in Northeast China. Model validation and sensitivity analysis suggested that the fugacity model could successfully simulate the monitoring concentration within an average difference of one logarithmic unit. The advection process played a major role in the transport and attenuation of the antibiotics in the ice-covered river receiving WWTP effluents. The scenario simulation indicated that increasing the targeted antibiotic concentrations in WWTP effluents to µg L-1 could keep the targeted antibiotic concentrations higher than 10 ng L-1 in the receiving river from the WWTP discharge source to 25 km downstream. This finding also demonstrates that the depth of water and ice, as well as flow velocity, play key roles in the fate of antibiotics in the ice-covered river receiving WWTP effluents. To our best knowledge, this is the first major study to combine experimental investigation with modeling to explore the environmental behaviors and fate of antibiotics in such a river.

Rivers may receive pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and environment estrogens, which are emerging concerns, from various sources. Understanding the fate of these emerging contaminants (ECs) from the sources to their receiving river is important for assessing their ecosystem risk. Here, the occurrence, seasonal variation, spatial distribution, and ecological risk of 22 ECs in water and sediments from the Jilin Songhua River, as well as in the effluents from the riverside Jilin wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were investigated. Results indicated that estriol with the highest median concentration of 21.5 ng L-1 in the river water and with the highest median concentration of 481.5 ng g-1 in the sediments, and methylparaben with the highest concentration of 29.6 ± 2.9 ng L-1 in the WWTP effluents were the predominant contaminants. The total concentration of ECs in the river water in the dry season was about 1.5 times higher than that in the wet season. The concentrations of these ECs close to the contaminated tributary and the WWTP were relatively high. Risk assessment showed that the maximum risk quotient value of estrone was 1.07 in the river water and estriol was 2.10 in the effluents. In addition, erythromycin posed generally medium risk in the river water and WWTP effluents. It should be paid attention to the prior control of the three contaminants in the river region.
