RESUMO

Reducing absorber layer thickness below 500 nm in regular Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells decreases cell efficiency considerably, as both short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage are reduced because of incomplete absorption and high Mo/CIGS rear interface recombination. In this work, an innovative rear cell design is developed to avoid both effects: a highly reflective rear surface passivation layer with nano-sized local point contact openings is employed to enhance rear internal reflection and decrease the rear surface recombination velocity significantly, as compared with a standard Mo/CIGS rear interface. The formation of nano-sphere shaped precipitates in chemical bath deposition of CdS is used to generate nano-sized point contact openings. Evaporation of MgF2 coated with a thin atomic layer deposited Al2O3 layer, or direct current magnetron sputtering of Al2O3 are used as rear surface passivation layers. Rear internal reflection is enhanced substantially by the increased thickness of the passivation layer, and also the rear surface recombination velocity is reduced at the Al2O3/CIGS rear interface. (MgF2/)Al2O3 rear surface passivated ultra-thin CIGS solar cells are fabricated, showing an increase in short circuit current and open circuit voltage compared to unpassivated reference cells with equivalent CIGS thickness. Accordingly, average solar cell efficiencies of 13.5% are realized for 385 nm thick CIGS absorber layers, compared with 9.1% efficiency for the corresponding unpassivated reference cells.

Differences in bacterial community composition (BCC) between bulk and rhizosphere soil and between rhizospheres of different plant species are assumed to be strongly governed by quantitative and qualitative rhizodeposit differences. However, data on the relationship between rhizodeposit amounts and BCC are lacking. Other soil microorganisms, e.g. arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), may also influence BCC. We simulated foliar herbivory (cutting) to reduce belowground carbon allocation and rhizodeposition of pea plants grown either with or without AMF. This reduced soil respiration, rhizosphere microbial biomass and bacteriovorous protozoan abundance, whereas none of these were affected by AMF. After labelling plants with (13)CO(2), root and rhizosphere soil (13)C enrichment of cut plants were reduced to a higher extent (24-46%) than shoot (13)C enrichment (10-24%). AMF did not affect (13)C enrichment. Despite these clear indications of reduced rhizosphere carbon-input, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA genes PCR-amplified targeting DNA and RNA from rhizosphere soil did not reveal any effects of cutting on banding patterns. In contrast, AMF induced consistent differences in both DNA- and RNA-based DGGE profiles. These results show that a reduction in rhizosphere microbial activity is not necessarily accompanied by changes in BCC, whereas AMF presence inhibits proliferation of some bacterial taxa while stimulating others.

RESUMO

Due to extensive grazing regimes over a long period of time, the Plain of Crau, the unique steppe of France, is a particularly suitable model to study the role of sheep grazing on beetle (Coleoptera) assemblages and their response to grazing abandonment. After four years of abandonment, beetle assemblages first only undergo a decrease in the abundance of a few species and then a gradual and slight change in species composition. Later, there is a change in the structure of assemblages, which increases with increasing time since abandonment. After 23 years of grazing abandonment, there is no significant loss of species.

We have demonstrated previously the ability of apoptotic cells to prime a functional immune response using an i.p. vaccination protocol with apoptotic cells and interleukin 2, before injecting a lethal dose of tumor cells into syngeneic rats. This protocol resulted in a survival rate of 33%. To elucidate the nature and the activity of the phagocytes involved in the clearance of apoptotic cells in vivo, we modulated the peritoneal cavity environment by administrating either thioglycollate or silica i.p. before injecting the apoptotic cells. Our results showed that thioglycollate abrogated vaccination efficiency, because none of the rats survived under these conditions. In fact, thioglycollate treatment induced a massive recruitment and activation of inflammatory macrophages that efficiently engulfed apoptotic cells, bypassing induction of specific immune responses. In contrast, silica treatment enhanced the vaccination efficiency of apoptotic cells plus interleukin 2 up to 66%. We distinguished a population of dendrite-like cells among the cells derived from the silica-treated peritoneal cavity both by their phenotype (MHC II(+)/CD80(+)/CD86(+)) and by their ability to induce the proliferation of allogeneic T cells in a mixed leukocyte reaction. Our results demonstrate the different roles of macrophages and dendritic-like cells in the physiological clearance of dead tumor cells and their implication in the design of immunomodulating vaccines.
