Background and justification: The Republic of Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa, on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb detroit, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Prior to its independence in 1977, the Republic of Djibouti was known by two names: "Côte française des Somalis" until 1967, then "Territoire Français de Afars et Issas". As part of our doctoral research on the ecology of mosquitoes in Djibouti, we noted a lack of information on the species encountered, and felt it essential to draw up a list of species before embarking on ecological monitoring. The aim of this work is to survey publications on mosquitoes in Djibouti and to synthesize data from this scientific literature in order to update the national inventory of Culicidae. Materials and methods: An exhaustive search of electronic bibliographic databases (PubMed, Scopus, HAL Open Archive, Science Direct and Google Scholar) was carried out. Reference lists were filtered to access additional articles in order to obtain more data. Two keywords were used: "Djibouti" and "French Territory of Afars and Issas". A selection of scientific publications on Djibouti mosquitoes and/or diseases transmitted by mosquito vectors was made. Researches were conducted in articles selected. The names of the species listed were checked and validated by referring to the site Mosquito Taxonomic Inventory. Results: A total of 13 studies, published between 1970 and 2023, were found. Over the years, the composition of the Culicidae fauna has become well known. In part, the movement of people traveling to and from neighboring countries has been linked to the detection of new species and the reappearance of mosquito species in Djibouti. Numerous studies have been carried out over the years, including purely taxonomic studies and others focusing on the incrimination of mosquito vectors and the characterization of the pathogens they transmit. A total of 37 species, belonging to two subfamilies (Anophelinae and Culicinae), of mosquitoes divided between 7 genera (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta, Lutzia, Mimomyia and Uranotaenia) have been mentioned across the country. The number of species per genus is distributed as follows: 5 species of Aedes including 1 subspecies, 14 species of Anopheles including two subspecies, 12 species of Culex including 1 subspecies, 1 species for each of the genera Culiseta and Lutzia and finally 2 species respectively for the genera Mimomiya and Uranotaenia. Five species have been incriminated as vectors of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, West Nile virus and chikungunya. Others are known for their potential role in pathogen transmission, including Zika and Rift Valley virus. Discussion - Conclusion: The bibliographical research enabled us to summarize the research carried out over more than half a century in the history of Djibouti, and to update the inventory of the country's mosquitoes, which now includes 37 species. Species names were reviewed and updated, and the case of Anopheles gambiae was also addressed. Two species mentioned as part of the Culicidae fauna of Djibouti appeared to be doubtful and are up for discussion. These results provide a useful information base for defining vector control priorities in Djibouti. They will also inform, guide and facilitate future consultations of our database. In addition, this study will help to identify research ways on mosquitoes in Djibouti.

Background: Phlebotomus sergenti, the proven vector of Leishmania tropica, the causative agent of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, is widely distributed in Morocco. Previous works using molecular markers (Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 rDNA and Cytochrome B mtDNA) hypothesized the existence of multiple closely related populations of sand fly species (cryptic species) that would exhibit distinct vectorial capacities. This work studies morphotypic diversity using traditional and geometric morphometry analyses carried out on Ph. sergenti's wings from central Morocco, where active L. tropica transmission occurs for 30 years. Methods: Descriptive characteristics (size and shape) of the right wings were measured in Ph. sergenti's specimens collected from fourteen stations in central Morocco. Both traditional and geometric morphometry methods were used to analyse geographic variations in Ph. sergenti wing's size and shape. Results: These analyses support the existence of distinct Ph. sergenti populations, enlightening significant phenotypic variations of Ph. sergenti's wings, regarding their size and shape, depending on geographic origin. In addition, traditional and geometric morphometric analyses of the wing's length, centroid size, ß, ɵ, and γ distances allowed clear discrimination of Ph. sergenti sub-populations. Conclusion: These data pinpoint the adaptative ability of Ph. sergenti to local environmental conditions. Additional studies are now required to further shed light on the genetic structure of Ph. sergenti populations in Morocco.

The faunistic knowledge of the Diptera of Morocco recorded from 1787 to 2021 is summarized and updated in this first catalogue of Moroccan Diptera species. A total of 3057 species, classified into 948 genera and 93 families (21 Nematocera and 72 Brachycera), are listed. Taxa (superfamily, family, genus and species) have been updated according to current interpretations, based on reviews in the literature, the expertise of authors and contributors, and recently conducted fieldwork. Data to compile this catalogue were primarily gathered from the literature. In total, 1225 references were consulted and some information was also obtained from online databases. Each family was reviewed and the checklist updated by the respective taxon expert(s), including the number of species that can be expected for that family in Morocco. For each valid species, synonyms known to have been used for published records from Morocco are listed under the currently accepted name. Where available, distribution within Morocco is also included. One new combination is proposed: Assuaniamelanoleuca (Séguy, 1941), comb. nov. (Chloropidae).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania tropica is a major health problem in Tadla-Azilal focus, Morocco, where the first case was registered, here, in one locality named Tanant in 1987. So far, CL remains endemic and largely widespread. The objective of this study was to analyze the current eco-epidemiological situation after thirty years of active transmission. Data used are the official ones, obtained from the Moroccan Ministry of Health. Between 1998 and 2015, 5518 CL cases were registered in three provinces; Azilal, Béni Mellal and Fquih Ben Salah. CL has spread, from the historical focus in Azilal along two axes; one to the Northeastern Mountains and the other to the Northwestern plains. CL infected both genders and all ages, with large number of women (53%) and children (75% had <9 years old). More interestingly, age range at risk was larger within females than males, and this difference was more pronounced in Fquih Ben Salah where the disease had newly emerged. Similarly, age ranges at risk were larger and fluctuated significantly each year particularly in new emerging areas in Béni Mellal and Fquih Ben Salah. All these variations may testify, at least in part, to the process of acquiring immunity. Altitude structured CL spatiotemporal distribution. CL was more prevalent in two altitudes ranges; 400-500 m and 800-900 m. The situation and duration of period of diagnostic of CL varied largely according to the altitude. These different scenarios could be related to the seasonal dynamics of vector populations.

In 2015, the mosquito Aedes albopictus was detected in Rabat, Morocco. This invasive species can be involved in the transmission of more than 25 arboviruses. It is known that each combination of mosquito population and virus genotype leads to a specific interaction that can shape the outcome of infection. Testing the vector competence of local mosquitoes is therefore a prerequisite to assess the risks of emergence. A field-collected strain of Ae. albopictus from Morocco was experimentally infected with dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), zika (ZIKV) and yellow fever (YFV) viruses. We found that this species can highly transmit CHIKV and to a lesser extent, DENV, ZIKV and YFV. Viruses can be detected in mosquito saliva at day 3 (CHIKV), day 14 (DENV and YFV), and day 21 (ZIKV) post-infection. These results suggest that the local transmission of these four arboviruses by Ae. albopictus newly introduced in Morocco is a likely scenario.
