RESUMO

Genetic structures of two closely related butterflies, Ypthima multistriata and Y. argus, inhabiting Japan were compared based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences. The former species is classified as a vulnerable species and exhibits a characteristic pattern of voltinism: univoltine and bivoltine populations are distributed in a scattered manner. The latter species is common and has a normal geographical pattern of voltinism: the number of annual generations is correlated with latitude. Our genetic analyses of these two species yielded contrasting results: a spatial analysis of molecular variance (SAMOVA) and FST between each pair of populations revealed a locally fragmented genetic structure for Y. multistriata, compared to three distinct geographic groups of Y. argus within which range-wide gene flow occurs. Although Y. argus is a common species, only the southernmost populations in Japan had higher genetic diversity, while the other populations had the same or lower levels of genetic diversity, compared to Y. multistriata. These results indicate that: 1) the degree of fragmentation of Y. multistriata populations was higher; however, markedly lower genetic diversity was not found, and 2) although Y. argus is a common species, its populations may not be genetically robust. In addition, AMOVA revealed a relationship between voltinism and genetic variation in Y. multistriata. This result suggests a phylogenetic constraint of voltinism in this butterfly.

RESUMO

We investigated feeding and fecundity of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), on leaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings that had been acclimatized to different light intensities. Based on these data, we analyzed the relationships between mite performance (feeding and fecundity) and leaf properties. The cucumber seedlings were grown in controlled-environment chambers under different light intensities at a photosynthetic photon flux density of 50, 100, 150, 300, or 450 µmol m- 2 s- 1 until the first true leaves had expanded. Adult females were released on the adaxial surfaces of excised leaf samples from the seedlings of each treatment group and held under standardized light intensity (200 µmol m- 2 s- 1). Fecundity and leaf damage area increased and decreased, respectively, as the acclimatization light intensity increased, indicating indirect effects of light intensity on feeding and fecundity through changes in the host leaf properties. Leaf mass per area (LMA) and photosynthetic capacity, which increased as the acclimatization light intensity increased, was positively related to the fecundity, but was negatively related to the leaf damage area. The higher LMA and photosynthetic capacity results in an increased amount of mesophyll per unit leaf area. This would allow the mites to feed efficiently from a limited area, which may explain the increased fecundity on these leaves.

RESUMO

The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of structural flexibility of wings of a butterfly in flapping flight. For this purpose, a dynamics model of a butterfly is derived by Lagrange's method, where the butterfly is considered as a rigid multi-body system. The panel method is employed to simulate the flow field and the aerodynamic forces acting on the wings. The mathematical model is validated by the agreement of the numerical result with the experimentally measured data. Then, periodic orbits of flapping-of-wings flights are parametrically searched in order to fly the butterfly models. Almost periodic orbits are found, but they are unstable. Deformation of the wings is modeled in two ways. One is bending and its effect on the aerodynamic forces is discussed. The other is passive wing torsion caused by structural flexibility. Numerical simulations demonstrate that flexible torsion reduces the flight instability.
