RESUMO

The unit of visual working memory is a fundamental issue under debate in the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience, with some traditional research suggesting that it is an object, while other recent studies demonstrating that a Boolean map offers a better account. The controversy surrounding the unit of visual working memory often centers on the representation of objects consist of same dimensional features (e.g. bicolor objects). For 2 colors in a bicolor object, some behavioral studies have suggested that they need to be represented by separate units, while some other studies using electrophysiological measures have found that they can be represented within a single unit. This apparent conflict hints that Boolean map and object may reconcile as the unit of visual working memory. Adopting the contralateral delay activity as an electrophysiological marker of visual working memory, experiments 1 and 2 consistently found that the contralateral delay activity amplitude for memorizing bicolor circles at P7/P8 conformed the Boolean map-based storage throughout the whole maintenance, while the contralateral delay activity amplitude at P3/P4 just conformed the object-based storage during the early period. It suggests though Boolean map got stronger supporting evidence than object, they 2 may coexist as the unit of visual working memory.

RESUMO

On a global basis, potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp. Skarbilovich 1959 [Behrens 1975]) are one of the most serious soilborne pathogens in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production. In 2019 to 2020, 188 soil samples were taken from rhizosphere soil associated with the roots of stunted and chlorotic potato plants in the main potato-growing areas of Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces of China. Globodera rostochiensis Wollenweber 1923 (Skarbilovich 1959) was recovered from 112 of the samples. Nematode identification was as confirmed by morphometric, light microscopy, electron microscopy, and molecular methodologies. Population densities of G. rostochiensis ranged from 47.0 to 69.0 eggs/g of soil. A BLASTn homology search program was used to compare the sequences of populations of G. rostrochienses from Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces with populations of other Heteroderinae spp. and populations of G. rostochiensis from other nations. Although potato has been grown in China for at least 400 years and the nation produces more potato than any other country, potato cyst nematodes were not reported in China until 2022.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To improve the utilization rate of cinnamon essential oil and compensate for the shortcomings of its easy decomposition and oxidation, the microemulsion of cinnamon essential oil was prepared using Tween 80 and anhydrous ethanol as surfactant and cosurfactant, respectively. The effects of the surfactant type, Km value, preparation temperature and aqueous pH on the quality of the microemulsion were studied via a pseudo-ternary phase diagram. The slow-release performance of cinnamon essential oil microemulsion and the control performance of the insect repellent package on the rice weevil were characterized. RESULTS: The results showed that, when Tween 80 was used as a surfactant and anhydrous ethanol was used as a cosurfactant, the Km value was 3:1, preparation temperature was 40 °C, aqueous pH was 5 and prepared cinnamon essential oil microemulsion was of the O/W type. The microemulsion had strong stability and a 81.5-nm concentrated particle size distribution, and possessed excellent embedding and sustained-release effects. The prepared insect repellent active package prolongs the use time and the effect of cinnamon essential oil. The repellent rate of the rice weevil was as high as 100% after 48 h, and the contact mortality and fumigation mortality rates of the rice weevil also reached 96.67% and 86.67%, respectively, after 96 h. CONCLUSION: The prepared cinnamon essential oil microemulsion and active packaging had a good sustained-release effect. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder resulting from autoantibodies against neuromuscular junction components. Research shows that this disease might be a primary bone marrow (BM) stem cell disorder. Autophagy protects the dynamics and homeostasis of the host cells by removing damaged mitochondria, protein aggregates and other intercellular materials. Dysfunctional autophagy is associated with autoimmune diseases. However, the autophagy activity and mechanisms in BM stem cell from MG patients remain largely uncharacterized. We evaluated the autophagy activity in bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) and the effects of autophagy on cell survival from patients with MG and healthy controls. Our results revealed that autophagy was significantly decreased in patients with MG before immunomodulation treatment compared with that in age-/sex-matched controls, and was lower in generalized MG (GMG) patients than in ocular MG (OMG) patients. Immunomodulatory treatment partially increased autophagy activity of BM-MNCs in MG patients and improved the symptoms. Furthermore, defective BM-MNCs differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis were observed due to dysfunctional autophagy. These findings suggest for the first time that BM-MNCs autophagy is impaired in patients with MG before immunomodulation therapy, and that autophagy is indispensable for the survival of BM-MNCs, implicating autophagy might be a potential pathogenic mechanism of MG and a novel therapeutic strategy for MG treatment.

RESUMO

Four decades of studies in visual attention and visual working memory used visual features such as colors, orientations, and shapes. The layout of their featural space is clearly established for most features (e.g., CIE-Lab for colors) but not shapes. Here, I attempted to reveal the basic dimensions of preattentive shape features by studying how shapes can be positioned relative to one another in a way that matches their perceived similarities. Specifically, 14 shapes were optimized as n-dimensional vectors to achieve the highest linear correlation (r) between the log-distances between C (14, 2) = 91 pairs of shapes and the discriminabilities (d') of these 91 pairs in a texture segregation task. These d' values were measured on a large sample (N = 200) and achieved high reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.982). A vast majority of variances in the results (r = 0.974) can be explained by a three-dimensional SCI shape space: segmentability, compactness, and spikiness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Foliar spraying of selenium (Se) has increasingly been applied to improve Se concentrations in grain crops, although little information is available about the properties of Se-enriched fruits. In the present study, selenium distribution in blueberry and Se effect on blueberry quality were investigated by foliar spraying selenite or selenate (200 g ha-1 ) on two blueberry cultivars (Bluecrop and Northland) during the young fruit or coloring stage. RESULTS: Selenium concentration in blueberry was mainly affected by cultivar and spray stage relative to the Se source. Northland was 1.3- to 1.5-fold higher than Bluecrop with respect to Se enrichment. Se treatment at the young fruit stage induced a 1.5- to 2.3-fold increase compared to that at the coloring stage with respect to the Se concentration of blueberry. Additionally, selenium was mainly stored in pomace, with an accumulative distribution ratio of 89.3-94.9%. The proportion of organic Se reached up to 77.0% in blueberry. Furthermore, the foliar application of Se significantly increased the anthocyanin concentration and the intact fruit rate of blueberry. CONCLUSION: Se-enriched blueberry can be used as a 'functional food'. Because Se was mainly accumulated in the pomace, the consumption of blueberries as fresh fruit, dried fruit and jam can improve the efficiency of Se supplement. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Identifying biological functions and molecular networks in a gene list and how the genes may relate to various topics is of considerable value to biomedical researchers. Here, we present a web-based text-mining server, GenCLiP 2.0, which can analyze human genes with enriched keywords and molecular interactions. Compared with other similar tools, GenCLiP 2.0 offers two unique features: (i) analysis of gene functions with free terms (i.e. any terms in the literature) generated by literature mining or provided by the user and (ii) accurate identification and integration of comprehensive molecular interactions from Medline abstracts, to construct molecular networks and subnetworks related to the free terms. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: http://ci.smu.edu.cn. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

RESUMO

Basic visual features (e.g., color, orientation) are assumed to be processed in the same general way across different visual tasks. Here, a significant deviation from this assumption was predicted on the basis of the analysis of stimulus spatial structure, as characterized by the Boolean-map notion. If a task requires memorizing the orientations of a set of bars, then the map consisting of those bars can be readily used to hold the overall structure in memory and will thus be especially useful. If the task requires visual search for a target, then the map, which contains only an overall structure, will be of little use. Supporting these predictions, the present study demonstrated that in comparison to stimulus colors, bar orientations were processed more efficiently in change-detection tasks but less efficiently in visual search tasks (Cohen's d = 4.24). In addition to offering support for the role of the Boolean map in conscious access, the present work also throws doubts on the generality of processing visual features.

RESUMO

The efficiency of H2 production via water electrolysis is limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As such, significant emphasis has been placed upon improving the rate of OER through the anode catalyst. More recently, the Open Catalyst 2022 (OC22) framework has provided a large dataset of density functional theory (DFT) calculations for OER intermediates on the surfaces of oxides. When coupled with state-of-the-art graph neural network models, total energy predictions can be achieved with a mean absolute error as low as 0.22 eV. In this work, we interpolated a database of the total energy predictions for all slabs and OER surface intermediates for 4119 oxide materials in the original OC22 dataset using pre-trained models from the OC22 framework. This database includes all terminations of all facets up to a maximum Miller index of 1. To demonstrate the full utility of this database, we constructed a flexible screening framework to identify viable candidate anode catalysts for OER under varying reaction conditions for bulk, surface, and nanoscale Pourbaix stability as well as material cost, overpotential, and metastability. From our assessment, we were able to identify 122 and 68 viable candidates for OER under the bulk and nanoscale regime, respectively.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Rhubarb is the peeled and dried roots of Rheum palmatum L. and Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf. or Rheum officinale Baill. Free total rhubarb anthraquinones (FTRAs) were isolated and extracted from rhubarb. Previous studies have revealed that the early administration of FTRAs protects the intestinal mucosal barrier in rats with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), the mechanism of which is not yet clear. However, we observed an enhanced expression of intestinal pyroptotic factors in rats treated with SAP, which may be related to the mechanism of intestinal barrier protection by FTRAs. AIM OF THE STUDY: The main objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which FTRAs protect the intestinal mucosal barrier in SAP rats, focusing on the classical pyroptosis pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SAP was induced in rats through retrograde injection of sodium taurocholate via the pancreaticobiliary duct. Subsequently, FTRAs (22.5, 45, and 90 mg/kg), rhubarb (900 mg/kg, positive control), and saline (control) were administered at 0 h (immediately), 12 h, and 24 h post-surgery. Pancreatic and intestinal tissue injury, positive PI staining rate, and expression levels of various factors in intestinal tissues were compared across different groups. These factors include diamine oxidase (DAO), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), high mobility group box chromosomal protein 1(HMGB1) and pro-inflammatory factors in intestinal and serum, pyroptosis-associated factors, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kB), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC), NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), cysteine protease-1 (caspase-1) and Gasdermin (GSDMD). RESULTS: The findings indicated that FTRAs protected the damaged intestine and pancreas and restored the expression of intestinal epithelial junction proteins in SAP rats. Additionally, it reduced intestinal and serum levels of DAO, interleukin 1, interleukin 18, HMGB1, and LDH, attenuated intestinal Positive PI staining rate, and significantly decreased the expressions of TLR-4, NF-kB, ASC, NLRP3, caspase-1 and GSDMD in SAP rats. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that FTRAs inhibited pyroptosis through down-regulation of the NLRP3-Caspase-1-GSDMD and TLR-4- NF-kB signaling pathways of intestinal tissues., thereby protecting the intestinal barrier of SAP rats.

RESUMO

Why are some spatial patterns remembered more easily than others? There are many possible mechanisms underlying spatial working memory function. Here, the author explores different mechanisms simultaneously in a single conceptual model. He conducts a large-scale experiment (35.4 million responses used to measure human observers' spatial working memory across 80,000 patterns) and builds a convolutional neural network as a benchmark for what is expected to be explainable. The author then creates a quasi-comprehensive exploration model of spatial working memory based on classic concepts, as well as new notions, including spatial uncertainty, Bayesian integration, out-of-range responses, averaging, grouping, categorical memory, line detection, gap detection, blurring, lateral inhibition, chunking, multiple spatial-frequency channels, redundancy, response bias and random guess. This model provides a tentative overarching framework for the mechanisms of spatial working memory.

RESUMO

The retro-cue effect (RCE) describes the finding that participants' working memory performance is enhanced when their attention is directed to the to-be-tested position by a spatial cue during the retention interval. Here, we explore the relationship between RCE and working memory consolidation. A sequential display retro-cue paradigm is used for the present study. In Experiments 1A and 1B, longer consolidation time (CT) completely erased the standard RCE. In Experiment 2, longer CT diminished the RCE in a standard simultaneous display retro-cue paradigm. In Experiment 3, the post-cue time was used by participants to further consolidate memory traces. In Experiment 4, longer CT protected memory representations from invalid cue costs. Our results support a consolidation account of the RCE: the retro-cue is effective when and only when the working memory consolidation is inadequate. RESUMO

Aeromonas is one of the most serious pathogens in freshwater aquaculture. Overuse of antibiotics for the treatment of fish diseases has led to the frequent occurrence of drug-resistant strains. Phage therapy is an alternative approach to overcoming the multi-drug resistance associated with antibiotics. In this study, a novel phage phiA034 targeting the host A. veronii A034 was isolated. The phage could infect 14 strains of 4 species Aeromonas. The phage phiA034 displayed head-tail structure with an icosahedral head in the TEM image. At the optimal MOI of 1, it had a latent period of nearly 20 minutes and a burst size of 286 PFU/cell. Besides, the phage phiA034 exhibited high tolerance to a wide range of temperature (30-70 °C) and acid-base (pH 6.0-10.0). The whole genome of phage phiA034 was sequenced with a size of 61,443 bp and annotated with 82 ORFs, mainly related to structure, DNA replication, and lysis. Based on the analysis and comparison of the genomes and proteomes, phage phiA034 could be classified as a novel species of an existing genus Duplodnaviria Heunggongvirae, Uroviricota, Caudoviricetes, Casjensviridae, Sharonstreetvirus. These findings have expanded the species bank and genomes library of bacterial virus and will promote the application of phage therapy in Aeromonas disease.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Rhubarb is the peeled and dried root of Rheum palmatum L., Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf. or Rheum officinale Baill. Free total rhubarb anthraquinones (FTRAs) isolated and extracted from rhubarb display the beneficial effects of anti-inflammation and immunological modulation. The timing of immune regulation is a major problem in the immunotherapy for severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). several studies reported that FTRAs could reduce systemic inflammatory responses by inhibiting early immune overactivity in the gut in rats with SAP. But, the optimal timing of rhubarb and FTRAs administration is not clear in clinical practice. Therefore, the time window for the best efficacy of rhubarb and FTRAs in the treatment of SAP patients should be further elucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY: The main purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and optimal timing of immune modulation with FTRAs in the treatment of SAP in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FTRAs (22.5, 45 and 90 mg/kg), Rhubarb (RHU) (900 mg/kg, positive control) or normal saline (vehicle control) were initiated at 0 (immediately), 48 and 72 h every 12 h for three times in total. The therapeutic effects of FTRAs and RHU on pancreas and intestinal tissues injury, secondary infection with pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), amylase, lipase, D-lactic acid (DLA), endotoxin (ET), proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, macrophages, dendritic cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the blood, small intestine and/or mesenteric lymph node (MLN) were determined in rats with SAP after treatment. RESULTS: The results showed that administration of FTRAs at 0 h was superior to 48 h and 72 h, which significantly protected the injury of pancreas and intestinal tissues, reduced the mortality induced by secondary infection with PA, decreased the levels of amylase, lipase, DLA, ET, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß), IL-6, IL-8, IL-18 and Tregs, and increased the levels of IL-4, sTNF-αR, macrophages and dendritic cells, secretary immunoglobulin A (SIgA) in the blood and/or small intestinal tissues in rats with SAP. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our studies indicate that the treatment window of FTRAs for SAP is within 48 h of development, administration of FTRAs at the early stage (0 h, immune overreaction period) was the optimal time and superior to that of 48 h and 72 h for its therapeutic efficacy. The earlier the administration of FTRAs, the better the therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, our data may provide a scientific rationale for the clinical application and optimal timing of FTRAs in the treatment of SAP.

RESUMO

Across a broad range of stimulus types and tasks (16 stimulus types × 26 tasks, 1,744 observers in total), the present study employed an individual-item differences analysis to extract the factors of visual-attentional processing. Three orthogonal factors were identified and they can be summarized as an FVS 2.0 framework: featural, visual, and spatial strengths. Apart from one exception (low-level motion), the FVS 2.0 framework accounts for the vast majority (95.4%) of the variances in the 25 tasks. Therefore, the three straightforward factors provide a unifying framework for understanding the relationship between stimulus types as well as those between tasks. Combining these and other related results, the role of preattentive features seems to be rather different from the traditional view: visual features are general purpose, exclusive, innate, constancy based, and keyword like. A general-purpose, exclusive, innate, constancy-based and keyword-like (GEICK) conjecture is proposed which suggests that the features are conscious-level keywords generated by the specific brain area of V4 and/or IT and then used by all other brain areas. RESUMO

Cost concerns have promoted the rise of Na-based batteries as an alternative to Li-based batteries, and the energy density pursuits have brought attention to Na metal anodes. Numerous studies have been conducted on the failure mechanisms and improvement methods of Na metal batteries (NMBs) at room temperature; however, the low-temperature applications are still faced with more complex challenges. On the basis of the concentration effect of the electrolytes, we propose a dilute electrolyte for the low-temperature operation of NMBs. With the low salt concentration and tetrahydrofuran cosolvent, the affinity between Na ions and the solvent molecules is weakened to achieve fast reaction kinetics at low temperatures. The designed electrolyte enables an effectively decreased cell impedance, which improves the cycling stability of Na symmetric cells. As a result, the full cell paired with the Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode maintains a capacity of 80 mAh/g over 250 cycles at -20 °C. This work provides an electrolyte design strategy toward low-temperature NMBs.

RESUMO

Background: Immune dysfunction is the main characteristic of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), and the timing of immune regulation has become a major challenge for SAP treatment. Previous reports about the time point at which the immune status of SAP changed from excessive inflammatory response to immunosuppression (hypo-inflammatory response) are conflicting. Purposes: The aims of this study are to explore the immunological dynamic changes in SAP rats from the perspective of intestinal mucosal immune function, and to determine the immunoswitching point from excessive inflammatory response to immunosuppression. Methods: Retrograde injection of sodium taurocholate into the pancreaticobiliary duct was applied to establish a SAP model in rats. The survival rate and the activities of serum amylase and pancreatic lipase in SAP rats were measured at different time points after model construction. The pathological changes in the pancreas and small intestines were analyzed, and the levels of intestinal pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and the numbers of intestinal macrophages, dendritic cells, Th1, Th2, and T regulatory cells were assessed. Meanwhile, the SAP rats were challenged with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) strains to simulate a second hit, and the levels of intestinal inflammatory cytokines and the numbers of immune cells were analyzed to confirm the immunoswitching point. Results: The time periods of 12-24 h and 48-72 h were the two death peaks in SAP rats. The pancreas of SAP rats showed self-limiting pathological changes, and the switching period of intestinal cytokines, and innate and adaptive immunity indexes occurred at 24-48 h. It was further confirmed that 48 h after SAP model construction was the immunoswitching point from excessive inflammatory response to immunosuppression. Conclusion: The SAP rats showed characteristics of intestinal mucosal immune dysfunction after model construction, and the 48th h was identified as the immunoswitching point from excessive inflammatory response to immunosuppression. The results are of great significance for optimizing the timing of SAP immune regulation.

RESUMO

Sodium metal anodes (SMAs) suffer from extremely low reversibility (<20%) in carbonate-based electrolytes-this piece of knowledge gained from previous studies has ruled out the application of carbonate solvents for sodium metal batteries. Here, we overturn this conclusion by incorporating fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as cosolvent that renders a Na plating/stripping efficiency of >95% with conventional NaPF6 salt at a regular concentration (1.0 M). The peculiar role of FEC is firstly unraveled via its involvement into the solvation structure, where a threshold FEC concentration with a coordination number>1.2 is needed in guaranteeing high Na reversibility over the long-term. Specifically, by incorporating an average number of 1.2 FEC molecules into the primary Na+ solvation sheath, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of such Na+-FEC solvates undergo further decrease, with spin electrons residing either on the O=CO(O) moiety of FEC or sharing between Na+ and its C=O bond, which ensures a prior FEC decomposition in passivating the Na surface against other carbonate molecules. Further, by adopting cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), we found that the Na filaments grow into substantially larger diameter from ~400 nm to >1 µm with addition of FEC upon the threshold value. A highly crystalline and much thinner (~40 nm) solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is consequently observed to uniformly wrap the Na surface, in contrast to the severely corroded Na as retrieved from the blank electrolyte. The potence of FEC is further demonstrated in a series of "corrosive solvents" such as ethyl acetate (EA), trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and acetonitrile (AN), enabling highly reversible SMAs in the otherwise unusable solvent systems.

RESUMO

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs), using lithium metal as the anode and garnet-structured Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) as the electrolyte, are attractive and promising due to their high energy density and safety. However, the interface contact between the lithium metal and LLZTO is a major obstacle to the performance of SSLMBs. Here, we successfully improve the interface wettability by introducing one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanofibers into the lithium metal to obtain a Li-lithiated TiO2 composite anode (Li-TiO2). When 10 wt % TiO2 nanofibers are added, the formed composite anode offers a seamless interface contact with LLZTO and enables an interfacial resistance of 27 Ω cm2, which is much smaller than 374 Ω cm2 of pristine lithium metal. Due to the enhanced interface wettability, the symmetric Li-TiO2|LLZTO|Li-TiO2 cell upgrades the critical current density to 2.2 mA cm-2 and endures stable cycling over 550 h. Furthermore, by coupling the Li-TiO2 composite anode with the LiFePO4 cathode, the full cell shows stable cycling performance. This work proves the role of TiO2 nanofibers in enhancing the interface contact between the garnet electrolyte and the lithium metal anode and improving the performance of SSLMBs and provides an effective approach with 1D additives for solving the interface issues.

RESUMO

A recent important debate in the field of visual working memory has focused on whether it represents a small set of high-precision representations (the "slot" model) or all items in parallel (the "resource" model). When faced with a large number of items, the slot model claims that high-precision representations of several items are stored and no information is retained about the other items, whereas the resource model claims that some imperfect information about each of the items can be stored. In this study, the observers tried to memorize and then recall six (out of eight possible) colors. The distribution of their scores (i.e., the number of correct responses) was modeled, and the empirical pattern of distribution fitted precisely with the prediction of the resource model but clearly differed from that of the slot model. Dependence analysis also revealed that the reports of items were approximately independent of each other, suggesting that all of the items were represented in parallel, as predicted by the resource model but not by the slot model. Overall, the data favored the resource model, not the slot model.
