RESUMO

Mercury (Hg) isotopes provide a useful tool to understand Hg sources and processes in the environment. The Hg isotopic composition of seawater remains poorly constrained due to the lack of an efficient method to process large volumes of low-Hg-concentration seawater samples. Here, we develop a continuous flow-double purge and trap device for the in situ preconcentration of Hg in seawater. This method yielded a good Hg recovery of 91.7 ± 3.3% (n = 4, 1SD) for spiked seawater samples and gave reasonably similar Hg isotope ratios of NIST 8610, indicating a limited matrix effect and limited Hg isotope fractionation during processing of seawater. NIST 8610 δ202Hg (-0.55 ± 0.09‰, n = 4, 1SD) and Δ199Hg (0.07 ± 0.02‰, n = 4, 1SD) were similar to previously published data. The method was successfully applied to seawater collected from the Xiamen Bay and the South China Sea. The seawater samples showed a Hg recovery of 91.6 ± 5.4% (n = 12, 1SD). Seawater Δ199Hg (-0.04 ± 0.05‰, n = 7, 1SD) in the Xiamen Bay was different from seawater Δ199Hg (0.05 ± 0.07‰, n = 5, 1SD) in the South China Sea, which implies distinct Hg sources to coastal and open ocean areas and highlights the robustness of our method in understanding the Hg isotopic composition of seawater.

RESUMO

Prevalent interactions among marine phytoplankton triggered by long-range climatic stressors are well-known environmental disturbers of community structure. Dynamic response of phytoplankton physiology is likely to come from interspecies interactions rather than direct climatic effect on single species. However, studies on enigmatic interactions among interspecies, which are induced by bioactive extracellular compounds (BECs), especially between related harmful algae sharing similar shellfish toxins, are scarce. Here, we investigated how BECs provoke the interactions between two notorious algae, Alexandrium minutum and Gymnodinium catenatum, which have similar paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) profiles. Using techniques including electron microscopy and transcriptome analysis, marked disruptions in G. catenatum intracellular microenvironment were observed under BECs pressure, encompassing thylakoid membrane deformations, pyrenoid matrix shrinkage and starch sheaths disappearance. In addition, the upregulation of gene clusters responsible for photosystem-I Lhca1/4 and Rubisco were determined, leading to weaken photon captures and CO2 assimilation. The redistribution of lipids and proteins occurred at the subcellular level based on in situ focal plane array FTIR imaging approved the damages. Our findings illuminated an intense but underestimated interspecies interaction triggered by BECs, which is responsible for dysregulating photosynthesis and organelle function in inferior algae and may potentially account for fitness alteration in phytoplankton community.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (FOC) can influence both maternal and child health. Research on FOC in China is scarce, especially on rural women. This study aimed to assess pre- and postpartum FOC and its predictors among Chinese rural women. METHODS: This was a prospective correlation study. A total of 569 women completed the prenatal questionnaire in the third trimester, and 477 of them completed the postpartum questionnaire within three days after childbirth. Maternal socio-demographic information, clinical information, childbirth self-efficacy and prenatal and postpartum FOC were investigated. FOC was evaluated using the Wijma Childbirth Expectancy/ Experience Questionnaire (WDEQ). Descriptive, bivariate, multivariate linear regression analysis, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: The mean pre- and postpartum FOC scores were 64.5 (standard deviation: 25.1) and 64.3 (standard deviation: 23.9), respectively, with 20.8% of women reporting severe fear before childbirth and 18.2% after childbirth. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed predictors for higher levels of prenatal FOC including higher education level, nullipara, higher monthly household income, lower family support, and lower childbirth self-efficacy (p < 0.05) and the predictors for higher levels of postpartum FOC included unemployed status, lower childbirth self-efficacy, and higher prenatal FOC (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that higher childbirth self-efficacy reduced the likelihood of severe prenatal FOC (OR: 0.99, p < 0.001), while severe prenatal FOC increased the likelihood of severe postpartum FOC (OR: 3.57, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The rural women have high levels of FOC before and after childbirth, with approximately 20% experiencing severe FOC during both periods. Higher education level, nullipara, higher monthly household income, lower family support, and lower childbirth self-efficacy are predictors of heightened prenatal FOC. Unemployed status, lower childbirth self-efficacy, and higher prenatal FOC are predictors of heightened postpartum FOC. Notably, enhancing childbirth self-efficacy emerges as crucial in mitigating severe prenatal FOC, while severe prenatal FOC significantly increases the likelihood of severe postpartum FOC. The development of targeted intervention strategies for the above factors can help reduce women's FOC level and improve their overall pregnancy and childbirth experience.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chinese American immigrants have been underrepresented in health research partly due to challenges in recruitment. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe recruitment and retention strategies and report adherence in a 7-day observational physical activity study of Chinese American immigrants with prior gestational diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Foreign-born Chinese women aged 18-45 years, with a gestational diabetes index pregnancy of 0.5-5 years, who were not pregnant and had no current diabetes diagnosis were recruited. They wore an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days and completed an online survey. Multiple recruitment strategies were used: (a) culturally and linguistically tailored flyers, (b) social media platforms (e.g., WeChat [a popular Chinese platform] and Facebook), (c) near-peer recruitment and snowball sampling, and (d) a study website. Retention strategies included flexible scheduling and accommodation, rapid communications, and incentives. Adherence strategies included a paper diary and/or automated daily text reminders with a daily log for device wearing, daily email reminders for the online survey, close monitoring, and timely problem-solving. RESULTS: Participants were recruited from 17 states; 108 were enrolled from August 2020 to August 2021. There were 2,479 visits to the study webpage, 194 screening entries, and 149 inquiries about the study. Their mean age was 34.3 years, and the mean length of U.S. stay was 9.2 years. Despite community outreach, participants were mainly recruited from social media (e.g., WeChat). The majority were recruited via near-peer recruitment and snowball sampling. The retention rate was 96.3%; about 99% had valid actigraphy data, and 81.7% wore the device for 7 days. The majority of devices were successfully returned, and the majority completed the online survey on time. DISCUSSION: We demonstrated the feasibility of recruiting and retaining a geographically diverse sample of Chinese American immigrants with prior gestational diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recruiting Chinese immigrants via social media (e.g., WeChat) is a viable approach. Nonetheless, more inclusive recruitment strategies are needed to ensure broad representation from diverse socioeconomic groups of immigrants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a higher risk of developing elevated depressive symptoms than women without GDM. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic (eg, location), clinical (eg, health care-seeking behaviors), and psychological (eg, active coping skills) factors associated with elevated depressive symptoms in Chinese women with GDM. METHODS: This was a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study among Chinese women with GDM. Data (n = 323) were collected in 2018 from two hospitals in Hunan Province in China. The Center for Epidemiological Survey Depression Scale was used, with a criterion score ≥20 indicative of clinically elevated depressive symptoms. Descriptive, bivariate, and multiple logistic regression analyses were completed. FINDINGS: The women had a mean age of 32.71 (SD = 5.17), and the majority were married (84.2%), college-educated (65.6%), and with Han ethnicity (89.8%). About 68% of women had elevated depressive symptoms. Women with higher active coping scores were less likely (OR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.10-0.38) to have elevated depressive symptoms. Women from one geographical location (Changde) who had more emergency room visits had higher odds (OR = 3.10, 95% CI: 1.88-5.10) of elevated depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION: There was a high co-occurrence of GDM and elevated depressive symptoms among pregnant women in our sample. Assessment for depressive symptoms in women with GDM is warranted. More research about increasing active coping skills may improve health outcomes in women with GDM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic (isolated) hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is a rare disease that can be classified as Kallmann syndrome (KS) or normosmic IHH (nIHH). This study investigated the phenotype and genotype of IHH in Taiwanese patients. METHODS: Twenty-six unrelated IHH patients were included in this study and their clinical, hormonal, and radiological findings were analyzed retrospectively. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed to identify the etiology. RESULTS: The 26 patients (M:F = 19:7) were divided into a KS group (n = 11) and a nIHH group (n = 15). The diagnosis was earlier in boys than in girls. Fifteen patients were found to have pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants of IHH-associated genes, and the mutation detection rate was 58%. CHD7, FGFR1, and ANOS1 were the most common genetic etiologies identified in this group. Two patients with nIHH were found to have de novo SOX11 mutations and Coffin-Siris syndrome features. After treatment, the height outcomes and secondary sexual characteristics were significantly improved. There were no obvious differences between the genetically resolved (GR), variants of uncertain significance (VUS) and genetically unresolved groups (GUR). CONCLUSION: Whole exome sequencing is useful in patients with IHH, and we identified the SOX11 gene as a causal factor in this study. We described the clinical, hormonal, and molecular characteristics, and the treatment outcomes, of Taiwanese patients with IHH, which should aid therapeutic planning and further research.

RESUMO

An isotope binary mixing model was applied for high precision measurement of mercury isotope ratios in samples with low mercury concentrations by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS). Standard addition was used to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the isotope composition calculations resulting from the isotope binary mixing model. A high, steady 202Hg signal of approximately 2.13 V was achieved, with the mercury concentration reaching 3 ng/mL. The isotopic composition of three standards (NIST SRM 1646a; NIST SRM 1575a; BCR 482) and natural samples were precisely determined. The standards and natural samples were diluted to low mercury concentrations (low to 0.90 ng/mL) and mixed with standard solutions (NIST SRM 3133) with high mercury concentrations (50 ng/mL); the isotopic compositions of low mercury concentration samples were calculated using an isotope binary mixing model after the isotopic compositions of the mixing solutions were measured. The results showed that the uncertainty of the calculated mercury isotopic compositions was in an acceptable range and the calculation isotope data were in good agreement with direct measurements. Our method allows the precise determination of mercury isotope composition in mercury solutions of concentrations (0.90 ng/mL) below the detection limit of the current system (3.00 ng/mL).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) patients who undergo surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy have limitations on physical activity which will lead to a decreased quality of life and poor physical fitness level. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the combined exercise intervention based on internet and social media software (CEIBISMS) on postoperative breast cancer patients by evaluating their quality of life, muscle strength and cardiorespiratory capacity. METHODS: This study was a randomized control trial with an intervention period of 12 weeks. Sixty participants (30 in each group, 42-60 years old, female) were recruited through an outpatient department. Procedure of exercise in the intervention group included: via phone step-recording app, ask the individuals to complete the target number of steps within a specified period of exercise, four times per week; face-to-face remote video instruction of individuals on muscle training, three times per week; via social media apps daily push common knowledge of physical exercise BC rehabilitation. The control group received traditional treatment and rehabilitation according to daily specifications of the hospital. The primary outcome was quality of life and the secondary outcomes were muscle strength and cardiorespiratory capacity. RESULTS: Experiments using a Short Form 36 showed that the CEIBISMS yielded significantly better results than traditional methods, in vitality (p = 0.009), mental health (p = 0.001) and reported health transition (p = 0.048) by week 12. The CEIBISMS resulted in significant improvement in the stand-up and sit-down chair test (p < 0.0001), arm lifting test (p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: The CEIBISMS offered rehabilitative effects in quality of life (QOL) and muscle strength of postoperative patients with breast cancer (BC) in China. RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) act as carriers for organic pollutants (e.g. antibiotics) and microorganisms (e.g. bacteria) in waters, leading to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. Moreover, the antibiotics adsorbed on MPs may exacerbate this process. For further research, it is necessary to understand the types and amounts of antibiotics adsorbed on MPs. However, due to the heavy work of MPs collection and sample pretreatment, there is a lack of analytical methods and relevant data. In this study, an in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) on-line coupled to HPLC-MS/MS method based on amorphous precursor polymer of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks/monolith-based composite adsorbent was developed, which could efficiently capture, enrich and analyze tetracycline (TCs) antibiotics. Under the optimal extraction parameters, the developed method was capable of detecting TCs at levels as low as 0.48-1.76 pg. This method was applied to analyze the TCs adsorbed on MPs of different particle sizes in mariculture water for the first time, requiring a minimum amount of MPs of only 1 mg. Furthermore, it was observed that there could be an antagonistic relationship between algal biofilm and TCs loaded on MPs. This approach could open up new possibilities for analyzing pollutants on MPs and support deeper research on MPs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to systematically review interventions that address food insecurity for persons with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes using the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) framework. METHODS: Six databases (OVIDMEDLINE, OVIDEMBASE, OVID APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, and EBSCO CINAHL Complete) were searched through January 2023. Research team members independently performed screening of abstracts and full texts, data abstraction, and risk assessment. RESULTS: In all, 3,139 unique citations were identified, and 20 studies met inclusion criteria. Interventions included medically tailored meals/groceries (n = 10) or produce prescriptions/vouchers (n = 10). Reach and effectiveness were the highest reported RE-AIM elements. Interventions reached a high-risk population via food banks, community-based outreach, and federally qualified health centers. A majority of participants identified as female, Black, or Hispanic/Latinx and were living below the federal poverty level. Most studies reported at least 1 diabetes outcome (ie, A1C, hypoglycemia, diabetes distress, diabetes self-management). Seventeen studies reported impact on A1C, with the majority reporting a decrease in A1C and 53% (9/17) of studies demonstrating a decrease over time. Self-management improved in 50% (3/6) of studies that evaluated this outcome. Self-efficacy improved in 40% (2/5) of studies, and improvements were seen in depressive symptoms/diabetes distress (4/7 studies) and quality of life (5/5 studies). Seven studies reported statistically significant improvements in food insecurity. CONCLUSION: Food insecurity has been associated with higher risks and adverse clinical outcomes in adults with diabetes. Implementing interventions that address food insecurity among adults with or at risk for diabetes can enhance food security and clinically important diabetes-related outcomes. Additional research dedicated to the sustainability of interventions is needed.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) have drawn exponential attention as anthropogenic pollutants, which have invaded every corner of planet. Seamounts are prominent features of the deep-sea topography, acting as breeding ground for marine animal calves and hotspots of pelagic biodiversity, yet MPs pollution in seamounts is scarcely studied. We investigated the MPs load in the whole vertical profile of seamount ambient water in the Subtropical Northwest Pacific Ocean. Based on focal plane array Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry, MPs were detected in all layers, and varied from 0.9 to 3.8 items L-1, PP and PE were dominant, PA and PET tended to gather at the seamount summit. With depth increasing, small MPs (20-50 µm) were dominant, and MPs surface roughness including crack, hole, and biofouling showed an increase. Three plastic-degrading bacteria were noted in the layers around the seamount, indicating that the seamount community may accelerate MPs aging and further migration. Our work first unveiled the MPs occurrence in the whole vertical profile of the seamount. It reveals that ocean MPs migration and degradation are significantly affected by the unique topography and biotopes of the seamount.

RESUMO

Aflatoxin is a potent mycotoxin and a common source of grain contamination that leads to great economic losses and health problems. Although distilled baijiu cannot be contaminated by aflatoxin, its presence in the brewing process affects the physiological activities of micro-organisms and reduces product quality. Bacillus cereus XSWW9 capable of degrading aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was isolated from daqu using coumarin as the sole carbon source. XSWW9 degraded 86.7% of 1 mg/L AFB1 after incubation at 37 °C for 72 h and tolerated up to 1 mg/L AFB1 with no inhibitory effects. Enzymes in the cell-free supernatant of XSSW9 played a significant role in AFB1 degradation. The AFB1-degradation activity was sensitive to protease K and SDS treatment, which indicated that extracellular proteins were responsible for the degradation of AFB1. In order to investigate the AFB1-degradation ability of XSSW9 during the baijiu brewing process, AFB1 and XSWW9 were added to grain fermentation (FG-T) and normal grain fermentation without AFB1, while normal grain fermentation without AFB1 and XSWW9 was used as a control (FG-C). At the end of the fermentation, 99% AFB1 was degraded in the residue of fermented grains. The differences of microbial communities in the fermented grains showed that there were no significant differences between FG-T and FG-C in the relative abundance of dominant genera. The analysis of volatile compounds of their distillation showed that the contents of skeleton flavor components was similar between FG-T and FG-C. These results offer a basis for the development of effective strategies to reduce the effect of AFB1 on the brewing process and ensure that the production of baijiu is stable.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to explore the associations among physical activity (PA), inflammatory markers, and quality of life (QoL) from preradiotherapy to 1-year postradiotherapy for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS: This was an observational longitudinal study. Mixed-effect models incorporating within-subject correlation were used to examine the relationship among the three key variables. RESULTS: Aerobically active patients had significantly lower levels of sTNFR2 (but not other inflammatory markers) than aerobically inactive patients. Being aerobically active and lower inflammation were independently associated with better total QoL scores after adjusting covariates. The trend was similar for patients engaged in strength exercises. CONCLUSIONS: Being aerobically active was associated with lower inflammation as represented by sTNFR2 but not with other inflammatory markers. Higher PA (aerobic and strength) and lower inflammation were linked to better QoL. More research is warranted to validate the association among PA, inflammation, and QoL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery for critical pediatric patients places significant demands on hospital equipment and facilities. Parents of these patients are often under enormous stress due to insufficient knowledge regarding cardiac surgery and postoperative care procedures. This project used appropriate preoperative consultation given by nursing staffs to decrease stress and anxiety in parents of pediatric cardiac surgery patients. PURPOSE: This project worked to enhance the completion rate of preoperative instructions for pediatric cardiac surgery patients and ensure their parents received comprehensive information and knowledge. RESOLUTION: The authors developed a standardized procedure for patient instruction and evaluation. Participants received instructions in the forms of a video presentation and printed handouts. Also, an educational training program was held and the implementation of preoperative patient instructions was made a routine task during nursing handover to enhance the completion rate. RESULTS: The completion rate of patient preoperative instructions to pediatric cardiac surgery rose from 78% to 98%; The cognitive degree of participating parents rose from 52% to 96%. CONCLUSIONS: This intervention effectively increased the completion rate of preoperative instructions for pediatric patients scheduled for cardiac surgery and improved clinical pediatric nursing care practicability and efficiency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics and effectiveness of lifestyle interventions for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnancy and the postpartum period to prevent Type 2 diabetes. DATA SOURCES: We conducted searches in seven databases, including Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Ovid Embase, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, Ovid PsycInfo, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses for articles published from inception to January 2021. STUDY SELECTION: We included articles on controlled intervention studies in which researchers evaluated a lifestyle intervention provided during pregnancy and the postpartum period for women with or at risk for GDM that were published in English. DATA EXTRACTION: Twelve articles that were reports of seven studies met the inclusion criteria. In some cases, more than one article was selected from the same study. For example, articles reported different outcomes from the same study. We extracted data with the use of a data collection form and compared and synthesized data on study design, purpose, sample, intervention characteristics, recruitment and retention, and outcomes. DATA SYNTHESIS: All seven studies focused on weight management and/or healthy lifestyle behaviors (diet and physical activity). Outcomes included glucose regulation, weight, lifestyle behaviors, and knowledge. The interventions varied in duration/dosage, strategies, and modes of delivery. In four studies, researchers reported interventions that had significant effects on improving glucose regulation and/or weight change. Some characteristics from the four effective interventions included goal setting, individualized care, and good retention rates. In the other three studies, limitations included low rates of participant retention, lack of personalized interventions, and limited population diversity or lack of culturally sensitive care. CONCLUSION: Lifestyle interventions provided during and after pregnancy to reduce the risk associated with GDM have the potential to improve outcomes. Health care counseling to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors related to the prevention of Type 2 diabetes is needed at different stages of maternity care for women with GDM. Additional high-quality studies are needed to address the limitations of current studies.

RESUMO

Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability around the world. However, ischemic stroke treatment is currently limited, with a narrow therapeutic window and unsatisfactory post-treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is critical to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms following ischemic stroke brain injury. Changes in the immunometabolism and endocrine system after ischemic stroke are important in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of cerebral ischemic injury. Hormones are biologically active substances produced by endocrine glands or endocrine cells that play an important role in the organism's growth, development, metabolism, reproduction, and aging. Hormone research in ischemic stroke has made very promising progress. Hormone levels fluctuate during an ischemic stroke. Hormones regulate neuronal plasticity, promote neurotrophic factor formation, reduce cell death, apoptosis, inflammation, excitotoxicity, oxidative and nitrative stress, and brain edema in ischemic stroke. In recent years, many studies have been done on the role of thyroid hormone, growth hormone, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, glucocorticoid, parathyroid hormone, and dopamine in ischemic stroke, but comprehensive reviews are scarce. This review focuses on the role of hormones in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke and discusses the mechanisms involved, intending to provide a reference value for ischemic stroke treatment and prevention.

RESUMO

Chinese immigrants in the US are disproportionately affected by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aims of this study were to describe their physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviors (SB) patterns and to identify determinates of objectively-measured PA and SB among Chinese immigrants in the US with prior GDM. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 106 Chinese immigrants with prior GDM across the US. PA and SB were measured by GT9X+ hip accelerometers for 7 consecutive days. Validated questionnaires in English and Chinese were used to assess knowledge and risk perceptions as well as cultural and psychosocial characteristics. Descriptive, bivariate, and multiple regression analyses were performed. Only 27% of participants met the PA guidelines. The median duration of moderate-vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) per week was 79 (IQR 38-151) minutes. Participants had an average of 9.2 ± 1.4 h of sedentary time per day. Living with parents (who may provide family support) was associated with more MVPA minutes per week, more steps per day, and a greater likelihood of meeting PA guidelines. Higher levels of acculturative stress were associated with fewer MVPA minutes per week. Being employed and having a lower BMI were associated with more SB. Strategies are needed to increase MVPA among this high-risk group, including decreasing acculturative stress and increasing family support. RESUMO

As one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the tropics and subtropics, mangroves are an important part of the global mercury (Hg) cycling. The environmental processes and effects of Hg in mangroves are complex and affect human Hg exposure, and it is crucial to understand Hg behaviors in the mangrove ecosystem. However, clarifying Hg behaviors in the mangrove ecosystem remains difficult because of an insufficient understanding of the dominant pathways. In this study, measurements of mercury (Hg) concentration and isotope ratios in sediment and plant tissues from a mangrove wetland were used to investigate Hg isotope fractionation in mangrove plants and sediments. Spatial patterns in Hg concentration and isotope signatures indicate that Hg re-emission in the sediment was suppressed by mangrove plants. The ratio of Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg was 0.93 for all sediments, indicating that Hg mass-independent fractionation in the mangrove ecosystem was primarily affected by photoreduction, while the ratios of Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg and Δ199Hg/δ202Hg for plant tissues suggested that natural organic matter reduction of Hg(II) was occurred in the plants. The distinct positive Δ199Hg values found in mangrove plants were supposed to be the results of the unique physiological characteristics of mangroves. The exterior Hg sources from atmosphere and seawater emphasize the role of mangrove ecosystems in the global Hg biogeochemistry. Our study highlights the distinct Hg isotope signatures in the mangrove from that in forests and indicates unique Hg behaviors in the mangrove ecosystem.

RESUMO

Certain dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of obesity and its comorbidities. However, these associations vary across populations. The prevalence of obesity has been rising amid a drastic nutrition transition in China during the country's rapid economic growth. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to summarize how dietary patterns are associated with obesity in the Chinese population. We searched for articles from 1 January 2000 to 1 February 2022 in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Scopus that assessed the relationship between dietary patterns and obesity outcomes. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a random effects model. From the 2556 articles identified from the search, 23 articles were included in the analysis. We found that the traditional Chinese dietary pattern was associated with a lower risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.57, 0.84, p < 0.001), whereas the Western dietary pattern was associated with a higher OR of overweight/obesity, but not reaching statistical significance (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.98, 1.84, p = 0.07). There were inconsistent results for other dietary patterns, such as meat/animal protein and plant/vegetarian patterns. In conclusion, the traditional Chinese diet characterized by vegetables, rice, and meat was associated with a lower risk of obesity. The heterogeneity in characterizing dietary patterns contributes to the inconsistency of how dietary patterns are associated with obesity in the Chinese population.

RESUMO

A series of symmetrical imidazole- and N-methylated imidazole-based diarylethenes were synthesized, and the structures have been well characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Their photochromism were investigated upon UV/vis light irradiation in DMF solution. A significant red-shift of UV absorption was observed after irradiation with UV light when substituents on the benzene ring (such as methoxyl group) were introduced. But N-methylation on the two imidazole rings will result in a blue-shift of UV absorption. The photophysical properties can be adjusted by changing the substituents, which provides a new strategy for the design of diarylethenes with excellent properties.
