RESUMO

Assembling macroscopic helices with controllable chirality and understanding their formation mechanism are highly desirable but challenging tasks for artificial systems, especially coordination polymers. Here, we utilize solvents as an effective tool to induce the formation of macroscopic helices of chiral coordination polymers (CPs) and manipulate their helical sense. We chose the Ni/R-,S-BrpempH2 system with a one-dimensional tubular structure, where R-,S-BrpempH2 stands for R-,S-(1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylaminomethylphosphonic acid). The morphology of the self-assemblies can be controlled by varying the cosolvent in water, resulting in the formation of twisted ribbons of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-2T) in pure H2O; needle-like crystals of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)2·1/3CH3CN (R-,S-1C) in 20 vol % CH3CN/H2O; nanofibers of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-3F) in 20-40 vol % methanol/H2O or ethanol/H2O; and superhelices of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)·H2O (R-,S-4H or 5H) in 40 vol % propanol/H2O. Interestingly, the helicity of the superhelix can be controlled by using a propanol isomer in water. For the Ni/R-BrpempH2 system, a left-handed superhelix of R-4H(M) was obtained in 40 vol % NPA/H2O, while a right-handed superhelix of R-5H(P) was isolated in 40 vol % IPA/H2O. These results were rationalized by theoretical calculations. Adsorption studies revealed the chiral recognition behavior of these compounds. This work may contribute to the development of chiral CPs with a macroscopic helical morphology and interesting functionalities.

RESUMO

In April 2022, leaf rust disease of Parthenocissus semicordata was discovered in the urban greenbelt in Guangzhou city, China (23.06°N, 113.16°E). The disease incidence was 70% and disease severity was 75%. Chlorotic spots and red-brown necrotic flecks were present on the upper surface of infected leaves, and orange uredinia were distributed on the lower surface (Fig. 1 a-c). Two representative disease plants were collected as voucher specimens and dried, then deposited in Mycological Herbarium of the Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering (MHZU GR0413, MHZU GR0414). Microscopic examination of the pustules of the samples revealed the presence of uredial paraphyses and urediniospores (Fig.1 d-f). Uredial paraphyses were hyaline, incurved, length 20-25 µm and dorsal wall 4.5-8.5 µm thick. Urediniospores were subglobose to ovoid, 16-24.5 × 10.5-17 µm. The wall of the urediniospore was hyaline or pale yellow, echinulate, and 1.0-2.0 µm thick. Telial structures were not observed. The morphological characteristics of uredial paraphyses and urediniospores were consistent with Yoshitaka's description of Neophysopella vitis (Yoshitaka 2000). Ten uredinia were picked using a sterile tweezer and the FlaPure Plant DNA Extraction Kit (Genesand Biotech Co., Ltd) was used to extract genomic DNA. Primers ITS4-rust (5'-CAGATTACAAATTTGGGCT-3') /ITS 5u (5'-CAAGGTTTCTGTAGGTG-3') were used to amplify internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and Rust2inv (5'-GATGAAGAACACAGTGAAA-3') /LR6 (5'-CGCCAGTTCTGCTTACC-3') to amplify large subunit (LSU) rDNA regions (Zhao et al. 2021). The sequences were submitted to NCBI (ITS: OQ991182 OQ991183, LSU: OQ979612 OQ979613), and blastn analyses of ITS and LSU showed 99.81% and 99.84% identity with the sequences from N. vitis (ITS: OQ304336, LSU: OM420266), respectively, found in GenBank. ITS combined with LSU sequences from the current study and reference sequences from Zhao et al. (2021) were used to construct Maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) phylogenetic trees using CIPRES website. ML and BI phylogenetic trees showed that the sequences from the current study grouped with N. vitis, with bootstrap support and posterior probability of 98% and 1.0, respectively (Fig. 2). Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed that the rust fungus was N. vitis. In the pathogenicity test, urediniospores were picked from fresh diseased leaves with sterile tweezers, prepared into spore suspensions (1.0 × 106 urediniospores/ml), and sprayed on a one-week-old leaf from three healthy of potted plants of P. semicordata, while three other healthy leaves were sprayed with sterile water as control. Each treated leaf was wrapped in a plastic bag and incubated in the dark at 25℃ for 48 h after which plastic bags were removed and the plant were moved to a greenhouse at 25℃. At 15 days after inoculation, symptoms and the morphology of urediniospores were confirmed to be the same as those observed in the field collection and no symptoms or uredinia were observed in the control group (Fig.1 g, h). Yoshitaka first discovered leaf rust on P. semicordata caused by N. vitis in Nepal(Yoshitaka 2000). To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. vitis causing leaf rust on P. semicordata in China. P. semicordata is often used as an ornamental plant for exterior wall decoration in urban landscaping and court. The occurrence of this disease can lead to the decline of the P. semicordata leaves and the impairment of the plants aesthetically.

RESUMO

Nanotubular materials have garnered considerable attention since the discovery of carbon nanotubes. Although the layer-to-tube rolling up mechanism has been well recognized in explaining the formation of many inorganic nanotubes, it has not been generally applied to coordination polymers (CPs). To uncover the key factors that determine the rolling-up of layered CPs, we have chosen the Co/R-, S-Xpemp [Xpemp = (4-X-1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid, X = H, F, Cl, Br] systems and study how the weak interactions influence the formation of layered or tubular structures. Four pairs of homochiral isostructural compounds R-, S-Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2 [X = H (1H), F (2F), Cl (3Cl), Br (4Br)] were obtained with tubular structures. The inclusion of 3,3'-azobipyridine (ABP) guest molecules led to compounds R-, S-[Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2]4·ABP·H2O with layered structures when X was Cl (5Cl) and Br (6Br), but tubular compounds 1H and 2F when X was H and F. Layered structures were also obtained for racemic compounds meso-Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2 [X = F (7F), Cl (8Cl), Br (9Br)] using racemic XpempH2 as the reaction precursor, but not when X = H. A detailed study on R-6Br revealed that layer-to-tube transformation occurred upon removal of ABP under hydrothermal conditions, forming R-4Br with a tubular structure. Similar layer-to-tube conversion did not occur in organic solvents. The results demonstrate that weak interlayer interactions are a prerequisite but not sufficient for the rolling-up of the layers. In the present cases, water also provides a driving force in the layer-to-tube transformation. The experimental results were rationalized by theoretical calculations.

RESUMO

Helical architectures with controllable helical sense bias have recently attracted considerable interest for mimicking biological helices and developing novel chiral materials. Coordination polymers (CPs), composed of metal ion nodes and organic linkers, are intriguing systems showing tunable structures and functions. However, CPs with helical morphologies have rarely been explored so far. Particularly, chirality inversion through external stimulus has not been achieved in helical CPs. In this work, we carried out an in-depth investigation on the self-assembly of 1D gadolinium(III) phosphonate CPs using GdX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) and Gd(RSO3 ) (R=CH3 , C6 H5 , CF3 ) as metal sources and R-(1-phenylethylamino)methyl phosphonic acid (R-pempH2 ) as ligand. Superhelices were formed by precise control of the interchain interactions through different intercalated anions. Furthermore, the twisting direction of superhelices could be controlled by synergistic effect of anions and pH. This study may provide a new route to fabricate helical nanostructures of CPs with a desirable chiral sense and help understand the inner mechanism of the self-assembly process of macroscopic helical structures of molecular systems.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been widely monitored to prevent hearing loss (HL) during microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS); however, their predictive value is still unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the predictive values of the maximum changes in BAEPs and define the best warning indicator and a cutoff value (CV) during HFS-MVD. METHODS: The clinical data of 93 HFS-MVD patients were retrospectively analysed. The maximum change rates of the latency and amplitude of waves I, III, and V and the interpeak latencies (IPLs) I-III, I-V, and III-V, when BAEPs change most during MVD, were defined. Pure tone audiometry was performed to evaluate hearing loss (HL). Logistic regression, propensity score, receiver operating curve (ROC), and area under the curve (AUC) were used to identify the predictive value of relevant indexes and to determine the CV (with the largest Youden index) of the best index at different levels of HL. RESULTS: The AUCs of BAEPs for predicting HL were 0.98, 0.92, and 0.84 for 50 dB, 30 dB, and 10 dB, respectively. The amplitude of wave V (AwV) was the best single predictive index at all three HL levels. The CV of AwV was 55% (50 dB), 46% (30 dB), and 34% (10 dB). At 50 dB HL, the predictive value of IPLs I-V (AUC 0.89 with CV 0.6 ms) was better than that of LwV (AUC 0.82 with CV 1 ms). CONCLUSION: BAEPs can predict HL well. AwV is the best single predictive index of all BAEPs. The reduction of AwV by 34% (watching), 46% (reporting), and 55% (warning) can be used as a sliding-scale warning sign. In addition, IPLs I-V (> 0.6 ms) and LwV (> 1 ms) should also be observed and reported during MVD.

RESUMO

The effect of berberine (Ber) on in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryo development in pigs and the associated differential expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the embryo were investigated. NCSU-23 embryonic culture medium was used for a control group, while NCSU-23 embryonic culture medium added with Ber was used for a Ber group. The embryo development rates in these groups were determined, and the zygotes, 4- and 8-cell embryos, and blastocysts were collected for cDNA microarray analysis. The development rates of 2-, 4-, 8-cell embryos and blastocysts were significantly higher in the Ber group than those in the control group (p < 0.01). The differentially expressed miRNAs in the 8-cell versus the 4-cell stage in control group as well as in the 8-cell Ber group versus the 8-cell control group overlapped, and it was found that nine miRNAs were commonly upregulated and two of them were downregulated, while there was no overlap among the other groups. The target genes of Ber-regulated miRNAs at the 8-cell stage were mainly associated with the molecular pathway of nucleic acid and protein synthesis. These findings suggest that Ber may regulate the expression of miRNAs at the 8-cell stage, which is beneficial to provide material reserves for the maternal to zygote transition of porcine embryos, thereby increasing the porcine IVF embryo development rate.

RESUMO

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), once thought to be nonfunctional, have recently been shown to participate in the multilevel regulation of transcriptional, posttranscriptional and epigenetic modifications and to play important roles in various biological processes, including immune responses. However, the expression and roles of lncRNAs in invertebrates, especially nonmodel organisms, remain poorly understood. In this study, by comparing a transcriptome to the PfIRF-2 genomic structure, we identified lncIRF-2 in the PfIRF-2 genomic intron. The results of the RNA interference (RNAi) and the nucleus grafting experiments indicated that PfIRF-2 might have a negative regulatory effect on lncIRF-2, and PfIRF-2 and lncIRF-2 may have a positive regulatory effect on PfIL-17. Additionally, lncIRF-2, PfIRF-2 and PfIL-17 were involved in responses to the nucleus graft. These results will enhance the knowledge of lncIRF-2, IRF-2, and IL-17 functions in both pearl oysters and other invertebrates.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Abnormal muscle response (AMR) has been considered as a predictor of the prognosis after microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS). However, its predictive value has not always been satisfactory. The objective of this work was to confirm an optimal range of stimulus intensities to elicit AMR in surgery. METHODS: Seventy-two consecutive patients with primary HFS treated by MVD were retrospectively included in this study. A wide range of stimulus intensities from 1 to 100 mA was applied in AMR monitoring. The AMR-elicited threshold value was quantitatively traced throughout all surgical procedures. The relationship between clinical outcomes and electrophysiological findings was analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 72 patients, 44 were immediately cured and 24 were delayed cured; the remaining 4 were proved not to be cured in their follow-up periods. The patterns of AMR-elicited threshold changes were categorized into five types, which could only be discriminated with a wide range of stimulus intensities. The constituent ratio of the patterns was significantly different (P < 0.001) among the clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Some patterns of AMR changes might have been ignored if we had only applied a narrow range of stimulus intensities (1-30 mA) to judge whether AMR disappeared or not. Thus, a wide range of stimulus intensities (1-100 mA) to trace the AMR-elicited threshold values was proposed for a more precise prediction.

RESUMO

Sensitive band positions, models and the principles of soil dispersion detected by hyperspectral remote sensing were firstly discussed according to the results of soil dispersive hyperspectral remote sensing experiment. Results showed that, (1) signals and noises could be separated by Fourier transformation. A finely mineral identification system was developed to remove spectral noises and provide highly accurate data for establishing soil dispersive model; (2) Soil dispersive hyperspectral remote sensing model established by the multiple linear regression method was good at soil dispersion forecasting for the high correlation between sensitive bands and the soil dispersions. (3) According to mineral spectra, soil minerals and their absorbed irons were reflected by sensitive bands which revealed reasons causing soils to be dispersive. Sodium was the closest iron correlated with soil dispersion. The secondary was calcite, montmorillonite and illite. However, the correlation between soil dispersion and chlorite, kaolinite, PH value, quartz, potassium feldspar, plagioclase was weak. The main reason was probably that sodium was low in ionic valence, small ionic radius and strong hydration forces; calcite was high water soluble and illite was weak binding forces between two layers under high pH value.

RESUMO

MicroRNAs have been shown to be important regulators of immune homeostasis as patients with aberrant microRNA expression appeared to be more susceptible to autoimmune diseases. We recently found that miR-146a was up-regulated in activated B cells in response to rat acetylcholine receptor (AChR) α-subunit 97-116 peptide, and this up-regulation was significantly attenuated by AntagomiR-146a. Our data also demonstrated that silencing miR-146a with its inhibitor AntagomiR-146a effectively ameliorated clinical myasthenic symptoms in mice with ongoing experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis. Furthermore, multiple defects were observed after miR-146a was knocked down in B cells, including decreased anti-R97-116 antibody production and class switching, reduced numbers of plasma cells, memory B cells and B-1 cells, and weakened activation of B cells. Previously, miR-146a has been identified as a nuclear factor-κB-dependent gene and predicted to base pair with the tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1) genes to regulate the immune response. However, our study proved that miR-146a inhibition had no effect on the expression of TRAF6 and IRAK1 in B cells. This result suggests that the function of miR-146a in B cells does not involve these two target molecules. We conclude that silencing miR-146a exerts its therapeutic effects by influencing the B-cell functions that contribute to the autoimmune pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis.

RESUMO

The liver injury induced by Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (PM) was investigated based on idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity model co-treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at a non-hepatotoxic dose. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were intragastrically administered with three doses (18.9, 37.8, 75.6 g crude drug per kg body weight) of 50% alcohol extracts of PM alone or co-treated with non-toxic dose of LPS (2.8 mg·kg(-1)) via tail vein injection. The plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were assayed and the isolated livers were evaluated for histopathological changes. The dose-toxicity relationships of single treatment of PM or co-treatment of LPS were investigated comparatively to elucidate the idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity of PM. The results showed that no significant alterations of plasma ALT and AST activities were observed in the groups of solo-administration of LPS (2.8 mg·kg(-1), i.v.) or different dosage (18.9, 37.8 and 75.6 g·kg(-1), i.g.) of PM, compared to normal control group (P > 0.05); while significant elevations were observed in the co-administration groups of PM and LPS. Treatment with LPS alone caused slight infiltration of inflammatory cells in portal area but no evident hepatocytes injury. Co-treatment with LPS and PM (75.6 g·kg(-1), i.g.) caused hepatocyte focal necrosis, loss of central vein intima and a large number of inflammatory cell infiltration in portal areas. When further reduce the dosage of PM, significant increases of plasma ALT and AST activities (P < 0.05) were still observed in co-administration groups of LPS and PM (1.08 or 2.16 g·kg(-1)), but not in LPS or PM solo-administration groups. Nevertheless, the co-treatment of low dosage of PM (0.54 g·kg(-1)) with LPS did not induce any alteration of plasma ALT and AST. In conclusion, intragastric administration with 75.6 g·kg(-1) of PM did not induce liver injury in normal rats model; while the 2 folds of clinical equivalent dose of PM (1.08 g·kg(-1)) could result in liver injury in the LPS-based idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity model, which could be used to evaluate the idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity of PM.

RESUMO

To investigate the difference of liver injury in rats gavaged with crude and processed Polygoni Multiflori Radix. The 75% ethanol extract of crude and processed Polygoni Multiflori Radix (50 g · kg(-1) crude medicine weight/body weight) were continuous oral administered to rats for 6 weeks. Serum biochemical indicators were dynamically detected, the change of liver histopathology was assessed 6 weeks later. Principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted to screen sensitive indicator of the liver damage induced by polygoni multiflori radix. Biochemical tests showed that the crude Polygoni Multiflori Radix group had significant increase of serum ALT, AST, ALP, DBIL and TBIL (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) and significant decreases of serum IBIL and TBA (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05), while the processed Polygoni Multiflori Radix group showed no obvious changes, compared to the untreated normal group. Histopathologic analysis revealed that crude Polygoni Multiflori Radix group exhibited significant inflammatory cells infiltration in portal area around the blood vessels, tissue destruction and local necrosis of liver cells. There were not obvious pathological changes in processed Polygoni Multiflori Radix group. The results demonstrated that the injury effect of processed Polygoni Multiflori Radix on liver injury of rats was significantly lower than that of unprocessed, and that processing can effectively reduce the hepatotoxicity of Polygoni Multiflori Radix. Traditional transaminase liver function indicators were not sensitive for crude Polygoni Multiflori Radix induced liver damage. The serum content of DBIL and TBIL can reflect the liver damage induced by crude Polygoni Multiflori Radix early and can be sensitive indicators for clinical monitoring the usage of it.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of shunt dependency syndrome in patients with temporal lobe arachnoid cysts who were initially treated with cystoperitoneal (CP) shunting. METHODS: Thirteen patients with temporal lobe arachnoid cysts who had initially been treated with CP shunt placement and had developed shunt dependency syndrome were treated by the senior author at Tiantan Hospital between April 2010 and January 2012. The clinical manifestations, neuroimaging findings, intracranial pressure (ICP) data, treatment methods, and therapeutic results were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The study included ten males and three females. The mean age at the time of development of shunt dependency syndrome was 12.3 years (range 5.5-24 years). In most patients, neuroimaging findings showed a collapsed cyst (the cyst appeared almost unchanged in only one patient) and normal or small ventricles (only one patient had enlarged ventricles). Three patients underwent simple replacement of the shunt, four underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, and the other six underwent lumboperitoneal shunt placement. All patients experienced resolution of their symptoms postoperatively. The mean duration of follow-up was 20 months. CONCLUSIONS: Shunt dependency syndrome is a rare but serious complication of shunting an arachnoid cyst. This condition is similar to the slit ventricle syndrome, but also has some differences. ICP monitoring may confirm the diagnosis when there are no significant radiological findings. Achievement of a shunt-free state might be the ultimate goal for all shunted patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of gamma knife on patients with intracranial cavernous angioma (CA). METHODS: The medical records of 122 patients (134 lesions) who underwent radiosurgery were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Th e average follow-up period was 43 months. No patient died. One patient underwent CA resection. In patients with epilepsy, 83% patients showed alleviation of seizures. About 44% of the lesions shrank in size after treatment with gamma knife radiosurgery (59/134). Seven cases had hemorrhage again after radiosurgery, and the overall annual hemorrhage rate was 1.6%. Edema was found in 11.5% patients (14/122) and all patients showed improvement aft er treatment. CONCLUSION: Gamma knife is a safe treatment for CA, which could obviously improve the symptoms of epilepsy. Gamma knife radiosurgery is the fi rst option for the treatment of cavernous sinus angiomas.

RESUMO

The introduction of exogenous lipids in the production of infant formula induces significant alterations in milk lipid composition, content, and membrane structure, thus affecting the lipid digestion, absorption, and utilization. This study meticulously tracks these changes throughout the manufacturing process. Pasteurization has a significant effect on phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin in the outer membrane, decreasing their relative contents to total polar lipids from 12.52% and 17.34% to 7.72% and 12.59%, respectively. Subsequent processes, including bactericidal-concentration and spray-drying, demonstrate the thermal stability of sphingomyelin and ceramides, while glycerolipids with arachidonic acid/docosahexaenoic acid and glycerophospholipids, particularly phosphatidylethanolamine, diminish significantly. Polar lipids addition and freeze-drying technology significantly enhance the polar lipid content and improve microscopic morphology of infant formula. These findings reveal the diverse effects of technological processes on glycerolipid and polar lipid compositions, concentration, and ultrastructure in infant formulas, thus offering crucial insights for optimizing lipid content and structure within infant formula.

Inspired by natural biological systems, chiral or handedness inversion by altering external and internal conditions to influence intermolecular interactions is an attractive topic for regulating chiral self-assembled materials. For coordination polymers, the regulation of their helical handedness remains little reported compared to polymers and supramolecules. In this work, we choose the chiral ligands R-pempH2 (pempH2 = (1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) and R-XpempH2 (X = F, Cl, Br) as the second ligand, which can introduce C-H⋯π and C-H⋯X interactions, doped into the reaction system of the Tb(R-cyampH)3·3H2O (cyampH2 = (1-cyclohexylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) coordination polymer, which itself can form a right-handed superhelix by van der Waals forces, and a series of superhelices R-1H-x, R-2F-x, R-3Cl-x, and R-4Br-x with different doping ratios x were obtained, whose handedness is related to the second ligand and its doping ratio, indicating the decisive role of interchain interactions of different strengths in the helical handedness. This study could provide a new pathway for the design and self-assembly of chiral materials with controllable handedness and help the further understanding of the mechanism of self-assembly of coordination polymers forming macroscopic helical systems.

RESUMO

To explore the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), type IV collagen (Col IV) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) and analyze the correlation between the level of these markers and adamantimous craniopharyngiomas recurrence. Expressions of MMP-9, Col IV and VEGF were tested by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in 40 cases of ACP, including 24 cases of primary group and 16 cases of recurred group. The expression level of MMP-9 and VEGF in recurred group were significantly higher than primary group (93.7% vs. 41.7%, P < 0.05, 87.5% vs. 45.8%, P < 0.05, respectively). The expression of Col IV in the recurred group was significant different from the primary group (Z = -2.619, P < 0.05). MMP-9, Col IV and VEGF may be the potential specific bio-marker related to the recurrence of ACP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma develops in a small proportion of tuberous sclerosis patients. There are still several controversies on the early diagnosis of the tumor, treatment of hydrocephalus, and timing of operation, etc. METHODS: From September 1996 to April 2006, 17 patients were admitted in neurosurgical department of "Beijing Tiantan Hospital". The authors analyzed medical records and followed up every case. RESULTS: There are 18 tumors out of 17 patients. One patient had double tumors. Sixteen patients except one underwent tumor resection 17 times. Fifteen tumors out of 17 were gross totally removed; two were partially removed. One patient died of brain infarction postoperatively. Three out of 13 patients with preoperative hydrocephalus still needed ventriculoperitoneal shunt after tumor resection. There was no recurrence after total resection. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of tumor should be made by clinical criteria. Serial follow-up is essential for a suspected perimonro lesion to find tumor growth earlier. When there is growth, tumor should be removed as soon as possible. Hydrocephalus will resolve in most cases after tumor resection, while external drainage is suitable for emergent cases. Transcallosal and transcortical approaches are both effective to resect the tumor. Tumor will not recur after total removal.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical outcomes, including survival and periapical healing rates and failure causes, of root canal treatment for patients with periapical lesion. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted which enrolled patients admitted for the evaluation and management of periapical lesion with root canal treatment. The primary predictor variables were difficulty assessment of root canal therapy (DARCT),which was divided into lower(DARCT =3-4), medium (DARCT =5-7) and higher (DARCT =8-9) difficulty root canal, in terms of canal length, curvature and calcification. The primary outcome measurement was the incidence of periapical healing and survival rate. Potential confounders included patient demographics, canal number, root canal filling, and coronal restoration. SPSS 21.0 software package was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The 5-year survival rate was 81.4%(83/102) and healing rate was 77.1% (64/83). DARCT was significantly associated with the survival rate(P=0.017). Root fracture, deep pockets lesions and periodontal abscess were observed in DARCT with a value of 8-9(P=0.027), leading to tooth extraction. The teeth with multiple root canals were extracted due to recurrent or persistent periapical lesion (P=0.004). Chi-square test showed that root canal number (P=0.021), quality of root canal filling (P=0.006) as well as DARCT (P=0.000) were significantly correlated with the final healing rate. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that DARCT (P=0.000) and the quality of root canal filling (P=0.033) were associated with the final healing rate. CONCLUSIONS: DARCT and the quality of root canal filling play key roles in the clinical prognosis of periapical lesion, DARCT and number of root canal are more likely to be correlated with failure.
