RESUMO

Nitrogen (N) cycle is one of the most significant biogeochemical cycles driven by soil microorganisms on the earth. Exogenous humic substances (HS), which include composted-HS and artificial-HS, as a new soil additive, can improve the water retention capacity, cation exchange capacity and soil nutrient utilization, compensating for the decrease of soil HS content caused by soil overutilization. This paper systematically reviewed the contribution of three different sources of HS in the soil-plant system and explained the mechanisms of N transformation through physiological and biochemical pathways. HS convert the living space and living environment of microorganisms by changing the structure and condition of soil. Generally, HS can fix atmospheric and soil N through biotic and abiotic mechanisms, which improved the availability of N. Besides, HS transform the root structure of plants through physiological and biochemical pathways to promote the absorption of inorganic N by plants. The redox properties of HS participate in soil N transformation by altering the electron gain and loss of microorganisms. Moreover, to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental problems caused by N pollution, we also illustrated the mechanisms reducing soil N2O emissions by HS and the application prospects of artificial-HS. Eventually, a combination of indoor simulation and field test, molecular biology and stable isotope techniques are needed to systematically analyze the potential mechanisms of soil N transformation, representing an important step forward for understanding the relevance between remediation of environmental pollution and improvement of the N utilization in soil-plant system.

Background: Older age is a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to investigate the correlation between OSA and liver injury among older patients. Study Design. This is a cross-sectional study. Methods: Consecutive older (≥60 years) snoring patients were included. Subjects were divided into no OSA, mild OSA, moderate OSA, and severe OSA groups according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and were also separated into liver injury and nonliver injury groups based on liver function. Logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze the independent risk factors for liver injury. Results: We studied 227 patients (155 male, 72 female). The prevalence of liver injury exhibited an increasing trend among groups with mild-to-severe OSA. In addition, body mass index, AHI, and TG showed significant differences between the liver injury and nonliver injury groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that AHI and TG were the major contributing factors for liver injury in older patients (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.055, p=0.013, and OR = 1.485, p=0.039, respectively). Conclusions: Older patients with OSA have an increased risk of liver injury and NAFLD, and sleep apnea and high TG are important factors in contributing to the development of liver injury.

The inefficient use of conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizers leads to N enrichment in the soil, resulting in N loss via runoff, volatilization and leaching. While using artificial humic acid to prepare novel N fertilizer is a good choice to improve its efficiency, the high heterogeneity of artificial humic acid limits its structural analysis and utilization efficiency. To solve above problems, this work mainly carried out the fractionation experiments, melt penetration experiments and soil incubation experiments. The results revealed that four fractions with different aromatization degree and molecular weights were obtained by the newly proposed continuous dissolution method, particular in the extraction solution of pH = 3-4, which were extracted with the highest aromatization degree. Furthermore, artificial humic acid urea complex fertilizers prepared at pH = 3-4 significantly improved the release of NH4+-N by 38.32% on days 7 and NO3--N by 10.30% on days 14, compared to urea application. The highly aromatic complex fertilizer with loading of urea-N was able to supply more inorganic N to the soil on days 3-14 (low molecular weight N) and to maintain a higher N content on days 70 (highly aromatized N). This can partially offset the mineralization of readily available organic N, buffering the immobilization of inorganic N from the soil when unstable organic compounds (e.g. conventional urea) were incorporated. A-HAU3-4 addition on days 70, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota were found to be the dominant phylum in the soil and the relative abundance of Endophytic bacteria was increased, which was conducive to the improvement of soil N utilization efficiency and soil N sequestration. Therefore, the preparation of artificial humic urea fertilizer with high aromatization degree or low molecular weight were an effective way to improve N utilization efficiency in the initial stages of soil incubation and maintain N fixation in the later stages of soil incubation. The future application of the strategy presented by this study would have an important ecological significance for alleviating agricultural N pollution.

A series of cationic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with o-carborane cage on the main ligand of 2-phenylbenzothiazole were synthesized. The prepared iridium complexes (C1-C6) were fully characterized by UV-vis, NMR, and FT-IR spectra. The exact molecular structure of complex C1 was further studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The different substitution position of o-carborane on the 2-phenylbenzothiazole ring lead to obvious differences in the emission properties of the synthesized complexes. The o-carboranyl unit results in a bathochromic shift of 10 nm in the fluorescence emission spectrum of C2. In addition, the presence of an o-carborane fragment promoted the strong fluorescence intensity of C1 and C4, which can be used as a tool to effectively boost the intensity of fluorescence properties. The emission fluorescent behavior of iridium(III) complexes can be facilely tuned by structural variations in the main ligands of these materials.

Salinization of cropland is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting global agricultural sustainability, posing a serious threat to agricultural productivity and food security. Application of artificial humic acid (A-HA) as plant biostimulants has been increasingly attracting farmers and researchers. However, its regulation of seed germination and growth under alkali stress has rarely received attention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the response of maize (Zea mays L.) seed germination and seedling growth after the addition of A-HA. The effects of A-HA on seed germination, seedling growth, chlorophyll contents and osmoregulation substance under black and saline soil conditions were studied by soaking maize in solutions with and without various concentrations of A-HA. Artificial humic acid treatments significantly increased the seed germination index and dry weight of seedlings. The effects of maize root in absence and presence of A-HA under alkali stress were also evaluated using transcriptome sequencing. GO and KEGG analyzes were performed on differentially expressed genes, and the reliability of transcriptome data was verified by qPCR analysis. Results showed that A-HA significantly activated phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, oxidative phosphorylation pathways and plant hormone signal transduction. Moreover, Transcription factor analysis revealed that A-HA induced the expression of several transcription factors under alkali stress which had a regulatory effect on the alleviation of alkali damage in the root system. Overall, our results suggested that soaking seeds with A-HA can alleviate alkali accumulation and toxicity in maize, constituting a simple and effective strategy to mitigate saline toxicity. These results will provide new insights for the application of A-HA in management to reduce alkali-caused crop loss.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak in China, constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. It is well known that COVID-19 patients may have increased serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in the early stage. The clinical changes in LDH may have predictive value in disease evolution and prognosis in critically ill COVID-19 patients. AIM: To examine serum LDH and clinical characteristics in patients with COVID-19 and their predictive value for prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of forty-seven critical COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit of the Third People's Hospital of Yichang City from January 27 to March 25, 2020 and divided them into survivors and non-survivors. The patients were diagnosed according to the World Health Organization interim guidance and critical cases met any one of the following criteria: Respiratory failure and required mechanical ventilation, the occurrence of shock, and the combined failure of other organs that required intensive care unit monitoring and treatments, according to the diagnostic criteria of critical COVID-19. Clinical data including symptoms, detection of SARS-CoV-2, chest computed tomography (CT) images, changes in serum LDH in different clinical phases, and prognosis were collected. Statistical analysis of the data was performed. Continuous variables were expressed as median (interquartile range) and compared with the Mann-Whitney U test. Categorical variables were compared with the Chi-square test. Survival data were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests. RESULTS: According to chest CT images, we observed the alveolitis and fibrosis stages in all critical patients in this study. Most non-survivors died in the fibrosis stage. Non-survivors had fewer days of hospitalization, shorter disease duration, shorter duration of alveolitis and fibrosis, and had dyspnea symptoms at disease onset (P = 0.05). Both first and lowest LDH values in the alveolitis stage were more pronounced in non-survivors than in survivors (449.0 U/L vs 288.0 U/L, P = 0.0243; 445.0 U/L vs 288.0 U/L, P = 0.0199, respectively), while the first, lowest and highest values of serum LDH in non-survivors were all significantly increased compared to survivors in the fibrosis phase (449.0 U/L vs 225.5 U/L, P = 0.0028; 432.0 U/L vs 191.0 U/L, P = 0.0007; 1303.0 U/L vs 263.5 U/L, P = 0.0001, respectively). The cut-off points of first LDH values in the alveolitis and fibrosis phase for distinction of non-survivors from survivors were 397.0 U/L and 263.0 U/L, respectively. In the fibrosis stage, non-survivors had more days with high LDH than survivors (7.0 d vs 0.0 d, P = 0.0002). Importantly, patients with high LDH had a significantly shorter median survival time than patients with low LDH in the alveolitis phase (22.0 d vs 36.5 d, P = 0.0002), while patients with high LDH also had a significantly shorter median survival time than patients with low LDH in the fibrosis phase (27.5 d vs 40.0 d, P = 0.0008). The proportion of non-survivors with detectable SARS-CoV-2 until death in the alveolitis stage was significantly increased compared with that in the fibrosis stage (100% vs 35.7%, P = 0.0220). CONCLUSION: High LDH and dyspnea symptoms were positive predictors of an adverse outcome in critical COVID-19. The rapid progressive fibrosis stage was more perilous than the alveolitis stage, even if SARS-CoV-2 is undetectable.

BACKGROUND: To examine the expression of D-dimer, fibrinogen (FIB), leukocyte, C-reactive protein (CRP) and tissue factor (TF) released from monocyte in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with or without venous thromboembolism (VTE) and analyse the correlation, to explore the possible mechanisms. METHODS: Seventy-two patients confirmed the diagnosis of lung cancer, among whom 10 with VTE were enrolled into the study from November 2012 to January 2014 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University and 30 healthy subjects were also enrolled as the control group. Ficoll and Percoll density gradient centrifugation separated of peripheral blood monocyte. Monocyte TF mRNA expression was detected using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS: There were significant differences in different stages of the cancer (P < .05) and no significance among the histopathologic types (P > .05) for the expression of monocyte TF mRNA in NSCLC patients, its expression was significantly higher in cancer with lymph node metastasis than those without lymph node metastasis (P < .01). Meanwhile, in NSCLC patients with VTE, the expression of monocyte TF mRNA was significantly higher than that in patients without VTE (P < .01). Difference of the survival curves between the low monocyte TF mRNA expression and the high monocyte TF mRNA expression was significant (Log-rank x2 = 4.923, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Monocyte TF may be a relevant source of TF-mediated thrombogenicity in NSCLC patients and may be associated with prognosis in NSCLC.

This study aimed to investigate the possible association between GSTP1, GSTM1, and GSTT1 polymorphisms and treatment outcome of advanced NSCLC. Between October 2009 and October 2011, a total of 308 patients of NSCLC on stage IIIA, IIIB or IV, treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy were included. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used to genotype the GSTP1 and GSTM1, and GSTT1 polymorphisms. We found that the IIe/Val and Val/Val genotypes of GSTP1 showed more CR+PR to chemotherapy in advanced NSCLC when compared with IIe/IIe genotype, and the Ors (95% CI) were 0.37 (0.18-0.71) and 0.15 (0.07-0.38). The IIe/Val and Val/Val genotypes of GSTP1 were associated with longer overall survival of advanced NSCLC when compared with the IIe/IIe genotype (For IIe/Val vs IIe/IIe, 37.63 ± 2.01 months vs 30.25 ± 2.06 months; for Val/Val vs IIe/IIe, 39.84 ± 3.36 months vs 30.25 ± 2.06 months). In the Cox proportional hazards model, the IIe/Val and Val/Val genotypes significantly decreased risk of death from all causes in patients with advanced NSCLC, and the HRs (95% CIs) were 0.51 (0.28-0.94) and 0.35 (0.16-0.78), respectively. We found that the GSTP1 polymorphisms might affect the clinical outcome of patients with advanced NSCLC, and our results could help us to facilitate therapeutic decision for individualized therapy.
