MAIN CONCLUSION: Expression profiling of NF-Y transcription factors during dehydration and salt stress in finger millet genotypes contrastingly differing in tolerance levels identifies candidate genes for further characterization and functional studies. The Nuclear Factor-Y (NF-Y) transcription factors are known for imparting abiotic stress tolerance in different plant species. However, there is no information on the role of this transcription factor family in naturally drought-tolerant crop finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.). Therefore, interpretation of expression profiles against drought and salinity stress may provide valuable insights into specific and/or overlapping expression patterns of Eleusine coracana Nuclear Factor-Y (EcNF-Y) genes. Given this, we identified 59 NF-Y (18 NF-YA, 23 NF-YB, and 18 NF-YC) encoding genes and designated them EcNF-Y genes. Expression profiling of these genes was performed in two finger millet genotypes, PES400 (dehydration and salt stress tolerant) and VR708 (dehydration and salt stress sensitive), subjected to PEG-induced dehydration and salt (NaCl) stresses at different time intervals (0, 6, and 12 h). The qRT-PCR expression analysis reveals that the six EcNF-Y genes namely EcNF-YA1, EcNF-YA5, EcNF-YA16, EcNF-YB6, EcNF-YB10, and EcNF-YC2 might be associated with tolerance to both dehydration and salinity stress in early stress condition (6 h), suggesting the involvement of these genes in multiple stress responses in tolerant genotype. In contrast, the transcript abundance of finger millet EcNF-YA5 genes was also observed in the sensitive genotype VR708 under late stress conditions (12 h) of both dehydration and salinity stress. Therefore, the EcNF-YA5 gene might be important for adaptation to salinity and dehydration stress in sensitive finger millet genotypes. Therefore, this gene could be considered as a susceptibility determinant, which can be edited to impart tolerance. The phylogenetic analyses revealed that finger millet NF-Y genes share strong evolutionary and functional relationship to NF-Ys governing response to abiotic stresses in rice, sorghum, maize, and wheat. This is the first report of expression profiling of EcNF-Ys genes identified from the finger millet genome and reveals potential candidate for enhancing dehydration and salt tolerance.

MAIN CONCLUSION: The main purpose of this review is to shed light on the role of millet models in imparting climate resilience and nutritional security and to give a concrete perspective on how NF-Y transcription factors can be harnessed for making cereals more stress tolerant. Agriculture faces significant challenges from climate change, bargaining, population, elevated food prices, and compromises with nutritional value. These factors have globally compelled scientists, breeders, and nutritionists to think of some options that can combat the food security crisis and malnutrition. To address these challenges, mainstreaming the climate-resilient and nutritionally unparalleled alternative crops like millet is a key strategy. The C4 photosynthetic pathway and adaptation to low-input marginal agricultural systems make millets a powerhouse of important gene and transcription factor families imparting tolerance to various kinds of biotic and abiotic stresses. Among these, the nuclear factor-Y (NF-Y) is one of the prominent transcription factor families that regulate diverse genes imparting stress tolerance. The primary purpose of this article is to shed light on the role of millet models in imparting climate resilience and nutritional security and to give a concrete perspective on how NF-Y transcription factors can be harnessed for making cereals more stress tolerant. Future cropping systems could be more resilient to climate change and nutritional quality if these practices were implemented.

Background: : Glomerular diseases (GDs) and other renal immunologic diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Providing a single point of service in collaboration with various specialists at a renal immunology clinic for such patients is not novel, but outcomes have not been reported. Here, we report the short-term outcome of Indian patients attending our clinic. Methods: : This single-center prospective cohort study enrolled biopsy-proven immunologically-mediated adults with renal diseases between April 2018 and December 2019, and followed them for six months. The primary end point for the analysis was an incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or loss of >50% estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and patient survival at six months. Secondary endpoints were the rate of complete or partial remission, and impact of demographic factors. Results: : Ninety two patients underwent renal biopsy for suspected immunological renal diseases. Fourteen (15.2%) cases were excluded for nonimmune etiologies, whereas 78 (84.7%) confirmed cases of immune etiology were included. Most common primary GD (n = 51) (93.5%) was membranous nephropathy (n = 20) (25.6%), whereas lupus nephritis was the most common (n = 8) (29.6%) secondary GD. Overall, 10 (12.8%) patients reached renal endpoint of ESRD or >50% fall in eGFR. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) (27%) patients had worst renal outcome. Patient survival was 94.8%. Thirty patients (38.4%) achieved complete, whereas 24 each (30.7%) achieved partial remission and remained resistant to disease specific therapies, respectively. Univariate analysis identified hypertension, severity of hypertension, and resistance to achieve proteinuria remission as significantly associated (P < 0.001) factors with poor renal outcome. Conclusions: : The present study shows that short term renal outcome of Indian patients with renal immune diseases remains poor. FSGS remains the GD with the worst renal outcome. Hypertension, its severity, failure to achieve proteinuria remission were significantly associated with poor renal outcomes.

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system: Y_{2}CuTiO_{6}. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie-Weiss scale (-θ_{CW}) of ∼134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field and temperature dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetization data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than 3 orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Emerging insights in buckwheat molecular genetics allow the integration of genomics driven breeding to revive this ancient crop of immense nutraceutical potential from Asia. Out of several thousand known edible plant species, only four crops-rice, wheat, maize and potato provide the largest proportion of daily nutrition to billions of people. While these crops are the primary supplier of carbohydrates, they lack essential amino acids and minerals for a balanced nutrition. The overdependence on only few crops makes the future cropping systems vulnerable to the predicted climate change. Diversifying food resources through incorporation of orphan or minor crops in modern cropping systems is one potential strategy to improve the nutritional security and mitigate the hostile weather patterns. One such crop is buckwheat, which can contribute to the agricultural sustainability as it grows in a wide range of environments, requires relatively low inputs and possess balanced amino acid and micronutrient profiles. Additionally, gluten-free nature of protein and nutraceutical properties of secondary metabolites make the crop a healthy alternative of wheat-based diet in developed countries. Despite enormous potential, efforts for the genetic improvement of buckwheat are considerably lagged behind the conventional cereal crops. With the draft genome sequences in hand, there is a great scope to speed up the progress of genetic improvement of buckwheat. This article outlines the state of the art in buckwheat research and provides concrete perspectives how modern breeding approaches can be implemented to accelerate the genetic gain. Our suggestions are transferable to many minor and underutilized crops to address the issue of limited genetic gain and low productivity.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of red contact lens in improving color vision test performance based on Ishihara, Farnsworth D15, and Martin Lantern Test (MLT). METHODS: Thirty subjects with a known color vision defect were enrolled after consent. The color vision was assessed using Ishihara test, D15 test, and MLT. The error scores were recorded. The test was repeated after using a red contact lens. RESULTS: The mean error scores were 7.87 (±1.00), 3.33 (±3.15), and 5.67 (±2.52) on Ishihara, MLT, and D15 test, respectively. The error scores reduced to 3.93 (±3.78), 1.33 (±1.34), and 2.77 (±2.12) Ishihara, MLT, and D15 test, respectively (P value < 0.05, Wilcoxon rank test). None of the subjects were in color perception (CP) II at presentation but 47.5% became CP II with the lens on Ishihara test. Ninety percent could pass the MLT CP III standard. CONCLUSION: This study shows that red lens reduced error scores and subjects could pass the color vision tests. Notwithstanding the improvement in performance on color vision tests, lens is not recommended for personnel on active combat duty. The recruiting medical officer needs to be aware of the fact that a subject with defective color vision can pass various tests with a red contact lens.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a major challenge to patient safety and have serious public health implications by changing the quality of life of patients and sometimes causing disability or even death. The true burden of HAI remains unknown, particularly in developing countries. The objective of this study was to estimate point prevalence of HAI and study the associated risk factors in a tertiary care hospital in Pune, India. METHODS: A series of four cross-sectional point prevalence surveys were carried out between March and August 2014. Data of each patient admitted were collected using a structured data entry form. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines were used to identify and diagnose patients with HAI. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of HAI was 3.76 per cent. Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (25%), medical ICU (20%), burns ward (20%) and paediatric ward (12.17%) were identified to have significant association with HAI. Prolonged hospital stay [odds ratio (OR=2.81), mechanical ventilation (OR=18.57), use of urinary catheter (OR=7.89) and exposure to central air-conditioning (OR=8.59) had higher odds of acquiring HAI (P<0.05). INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: HAI prevalence showed a progressive reduction over successive rounds of survey. Conscious effort needs to be taken by all concerned to reduce the duration of hospital stay. Use of medical devices should be minimized and used judiciously. Healthcare infection control should be a priority of every healthcare provider. Such surveys should be done in different healthcare settings to plan a response to reducing HAI.

The S-100 and alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) proteins have been localised in epididymal tissue of several mammalian species, but there have been no data for a seasonal work in camel. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunoreactivities of S-100 and α-SMA proteins in the epididymis of dromedary camel during breeding and nonbreeding seasons. The immunopositive signals for both proteins were observed in different regions of camel epididymis. S-100-immunopositive signals were noted in both the epididymal epithelium and the intertubular connective tissue, while α-SMA signals were confined to the intertubular connective tissue, especially in the peritubular smooth muscle coat and the blood vessels. This study showed an increase in the intensity of S-100 and α-SMA immunoreactions during the breeding season in different regions of camel epididymis than that seen in the nonbreeding season. In conclusion, epididymis might be considered as a source of S-100 and α-SMA proteins in the camel and the secretion of these proteins showed distinct seasonal variations. Further, S-100 and α-SMA may affect the structural and physiological states of the epididymal duct.

DNA has emerged as an exciting binding agent for programmable colloidal self-assembly. Its popularity derives from its unique properties: it provides highly specific short-ranged interactions and at the same time it acts as a steric stabilizer against non-specific van der Waals and Coulomb interactions. Because complementary DNA strands are linked only via hydrogen bonds, DNA-mediated binding is thermally reversible: it provides an effective attraction that can be switched off by raising the temperature only by a few degrees. In this article we introduce a new binary system made of DNA-functionalized filamentous fd viruses of ∼880 nm length with an aspect ratio of ∼100, and 50 nm gold nanoparticles (gold NPs) coated with the complementary DNA strands. When quenching mixtures below the melt temperature Tm, at which the attraction is switched on, we observe aggregation. Conversely, above Tm the system melts into a homogenous particulate 'gas'. We present the aggregation behavior of three different gold NP to virus ratios and compare them to a gel made solely of gold NPs. In particular, we have investigated the aggregate structures as a function of cooling rate and determine how they evolve as function of time for given quench depths, employing fluorescence microscopy. Structural information was extracted in the form of an effective structure factor and chord length distributions. Rapid cooling rates lead to open aggregates, while slower controlled cooling rates closer to equilibrium DNA hybridization lead to more fine-stranded gels. Despite the different structures we find that for both cooling rates the quench into the two-phase region leads to initial spinodal decomposition, which becomes arrested. Surprisingly, although the fine-stranded gel is disordered, the overall structure and the corresponding length scale distributions in the system are remarkably reproducible. Such highly porous systems can be developed into new functional materials.

BACKGROUND: Andaman and Nicobar Island is a group of 572 islands with a population of 3,80,500. The only service hospital as well as govt hospital is situated at its capital, Portblair. The islands are interconnected only by sea passage and to reach the capital by this route it sometimes takes two days. METHODS: The objective of this study is to assess the spectrum of different ocular diseases in remote islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Author had conducted various camps on these remote islands as a community outreach programme over two years. RESULTS: Top eye diseases found were refractive error (35%), cataract (22%), conjunctival infammatory disease (15%), glaucoma cases (07%), pterygium (07%), NLDO (02%) and uveitis (02%). Out of total 132 cataract patients screened, 32 patients (approximately 24%) were operated in INHS Dhanvantari at free of cost with help of NPCB (National Programme for Control of Blindness). CONCLUSION: This was the first kind of study conducted on these remote islands to know the prevalence of different ocular diseases. The important point to be seen in this study was unawareness of glaucoma and cataract load. No optometrist was posted in the PHCs to provide primary eye care like prescribing glasses, which is also a big concern.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to antimicrobial agents is emerging in wide variety of nosocomial and community acquired pathogens. Widespread and often inappropriate use of broad spectrum antimicrobial agents is recognized as a significant contributing factor to the development and spread of bacterial resistance. This study was conducted to gain insight into the prevalent antimicrobial prescribing practices, and antimicrobial resistance pattern in nosocomial pathogens at a tertiary care hospital in Pune, India. METHODS: Series of one day cross sectional point prevalence surveys were carried out on four days between March and August 2014. All eligible in patients were included in the study. A structured data entry form was used to collect the data for each patient. Relevant samples were collected for microbiological examination from all the clinically identified hospital acquired infection cases. RESULTS: 41.73% of the eligible patients (95% CI: 39.52-43.97) had been prescribed at least one antimicrobial during their stay in the hospital. Beta-lactams (38%) were the most prescribed antimicrobials, followed by Protein synthesis inhibitors (24%). Majority of the organisms isolated from Hospital acquired infection (HAI cases) were found to be resistant to the commonly used antimicrobials viz: Cefotaxime, Ceftriaxone, Amikacin, Gentamicin and Monobactams. CONCLUSION: There is need to have regular antimicrobial susceptibility surveillance and dissemination of this information to the clinicians. In addition, emphasis on the rational use of antimicrobials, antimicrobial rotation and strict adherence to the standard treatment guidelines is very essential.

Changes in water status of developing seeds of Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill.) grown under different moisture stress conditions were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)- spin-spin relaxation time (T2). A comparison of the seed development characteristics, composition and physical properties indicated that, characteristics like seed weight, seed number/ear, rate of seed filling increased with development stages but decreased with moisture stress conditions. The NMR- spin-spin relaxation (T2) component like bound water increased with seed maturation (40-50%) but decreased with moisture stress conditions (30-40%). The changes in seed water status to increasing levels of moisture stress and seed maturity indicates that moisture stress resulted in more proportion of water to bound state and intermediate state and less proportion of water in free-state. These changes are further corroborated by significant changes in protein and starch contents in seeds under high moisture stress treatments. Thus seed water status during its development is not only affected by development processes but also by moisture stress conditions. This study strongly indicated a clear moisture stress and development stage dependence of seed tissue water status in developing soybean seeds.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether performing the test bolus (TB) of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) and computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) at 80 kVp reduces dose without compromising diagnostic quality. METHODS: An 80 kVp TB protocol for CTCA and CTPA was retrospectively compared to standard TB protocol (non-obese: 100 kVp, obese: 120 kVp). CT angiogram parameters were unchanged between cohorts. Thirty-seven consecutive 80 kVp TB CTCA images were compared to 53 standard CTCA images. Fifty consecutive CTPAs from each protocol were analysed. Diagnostic quality of the CT angiogram was assessed by: mean attenuation, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the ascending aorta (AA) in CTCA and in the main pulmonary artery (MPA) in CTPA, diagnostic rate, and number of repeated monitoring scans. Mean effective dose was estimated using the dose-length product. RESULTS: Mean TB effective doses were significantly lower (P < 0.0001) for 80 kVp scans compared to the standard in non-obese CTCA (0.15 ± 0.04 mSv Vs 0.33 ± 0.09 mSv), obese CTCA (0.17 ± 0.06 mSv Vs 0.57 ± 0.12 mSv), and CTPA patients (0.07 ± 0.03 mSv Vs 0.15 ± 0.06 mSv). No difference was demonstrated in mean attenuation, SNR (AA), SNR (MPA), diagnostic rates, or number of repeated monitoring scans between protocols. CONCLUSIONS: Routinely performing TB at 80 kVp, regardless of body habitus, in CTCA and CTPA results in a small but significant dose reduction, without compromising CT angiogram diagnostic quality. KEY POINTS: • CT coronary angiography is performed to exclude the presence of significant coronary atherosclerosis. • CT pulmonary angiography is performed to diagnose pulmonary thromboembolism. • This retrospective study showed dose reduction by performing test bolus at 80 kVp. • Diagnosis can be made with reduced exposure to ionising radiation.

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have recently received much attention for their possible applications in biotechnology and biomedical. However, little is known about the toxicity in reproductive organs of animal model following exposure to nanoparticles. OBJECTIVE: This study therefore, tried to examine the effects of nanoparticles with a diameter range of 5-20 nm on the histology of the testis of wistar rats and correlate it with Transmission Electron Microscopy results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups of 8 rats each. Each group received the following via gavage technique for 90 days: Control Group (Group-1)-tap water; Experimental group (Group 2) - nanoparticles (20ug/kg/day). After ninety days (chronic study), rats were sacrificed and testis tissues was processed for histology and transmission electron microscopic study. RESULTS: There was significant difference between the observations of group-1 and group 2. The changes observed in the testis were disarray of the spermatogenic cells and disorientation of the testis. These changes were observed to have been disappearing from normal histological features. Detailed structural damages were observed with TEM analysis, such as depletion of germ cells, germinal cells necrosis, especially in spermatogonia and Leydig cells had an abnormal fibroblast-like appearance, abnormal space between neighboring sertoli cells, mitochondria, lost cristae and vacuolated (none energized) with those animals exposed to nanoparticles. CONCLUSION: It seems that nanoparticles have acute and significant effects on spermatogenesis and number of spermatogenic cells. More experimental investigations are necessary to elucidate better conclusion regarding the safety of nanoparticles on male reproduction system.

Introduction: Both knotted all suture anchors and metal anchors are used for arthroscopic Bankart repair. We retrospectively evaluated and compared clinical and functional outcomes after arthroscopic Bankart repair using the knotted all-suture anchors and knotted metal anchors. Materials and methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis, patients who underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair without any concomitant additional lesion repair using either all-suture anchors or metal anchors, between January 2015 and May 2018 were identified. Their pre- and post-operative functional and clinical outcomes were compared using Rowe and WOSI scores. The recurrence rate in the two groups was also compared. Results: A total of 41 patients in all suture anchors group and 47 in the metal anchors group were identified as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. The demographic profile of both groups was comparable. There was no significant difference in clinical and functional outcome between the two suture anchor groups as per Rowe (pre-operative 40.13+6.51 vs 38.09+6.24 and post-operative 2 years 93.28+7.09 vs 92.55+9.2) and WOSI (pre-operative 943.05+216.64 vs 977.55+165.46 and post-operative 2 years 278.21+227.56 vs 270.94+186.25) scores. There was a significant improvement in both the groups between preoperative and post-operative ROWE and WOSI scores at 6 months and 2 years follow-up as compared to pre-operative scores (p<0.001). Re-dislocation rates were also comparable (4.8% vs 6.3%). Conclusion: All-suture anchors showed comparable clinical and functional results as the metal anchors for arthroscopic Bankart repair at two-year follow-up.

The Nuclear Factor Y (NF-Y) is one of the widely explored transcription factors (TFs) family for its potential role in regulating molecular mechanisms related to stress response and developmental processes. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn) is a hardy and stress-tolerant crop where partial efforts have been made to characterize a few transcription factors. However, the NF-Y TF is still poorly explored and not well documented. The present study aims to identify and characterize NF-Y genes of finger millet using a bioinformatics approach. Genome mining revealed 57 EcNF-Y (Eleusine coracana Nuclear Factor-Y) genes in finger millet, comprising 18 NF-YA, 23 NF-YB, and 16 NF-YC genes. The gene organization, conserved motif, cis-regulatory elements, miRNA target sites, and three-dimensional structures of these NF-Ys were analyzed. The nucleotide substitution rate and gene duplication analysis showed the presence of 7 EcNF-YA, 10 EcNF-YB, and 8 EcNF-YC paralogous genes and revealed the possibilities of synonymous substitution and stabilizing selection during evolution. The role of NF-Ys of finger millet in abiotic stress tolerance was evident by the presence of relevant cis-elements such as ABRE (abscisic acid-responsive elements), DRE (dehydration-responsive element), MYB (myeloblastosis) or MYC (myelocytomatosis). Twenty-three isoforms of miR169, mainly targeting a single NF-Y gene, i.e., the EcNF-YA13 gene, were observed. This interaction could be targeted for finger millet improvement against Magnaporthe oryzae (blast fungus). Therefore, by this study, the putative functions related to biotic and abiotic stress tolerance for many of the EcNF-Y genes could be explored in finger millet.

Temperature-dependent dc-magnetization and ac-susceptibility curves have been recorded for series of single and double layered Ruddlesden-Popper multicomponent perovskites with chemical formula A2BO4 and A3B2O7, respectively, with (La, Sr) on A-sites and up to 7 different cations on the B-sites (Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu). The phase purity and chemical homogeneity of the compounds were investigated by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Independently of the composition, spin glassiness is observed in both systems. Scaling analyses suggest the materials undergo spin glass phase transitions at low temperatures. Yet, qualitative differences are observed between the single-layered and double-layered systems, which are discussed in the light of the spatial dimensionality and magnetic interaction in layered oxide perovskites.

We report the experimental determination of the magnetic exchange parameter (J/kB= 2.88 ± 0.02 K) for the Spin-3/2 ferromagnetic (FM) Kagomé lattice system: Co3V2O8using the temperature dependence of dc-magnetic susceptibilityχ(T) data by employing the fundamental Heisenberg linear chain model. Our results are quite consistent with the theoretically reported nearest neighbor dominant FM exchange coupling strengthJex-NN∼2.45 K. Five different magnetic phase transitions (6.2-11.2 K) and spin-flip transitions (9.6-7.7 kOe) have been probed using the∂(χT)/∂Tvs.T, heat capacity (CP-T) and differential isothermal magnetization curves. Among such sequence of transitions, the prominent ones being incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) state at 11.2 K, commensurate AFM state at 8.8 K, and commensurate FM state across 6.2 K. All the successive magnetic phase transitions have been mapped onto a single H-T plane through which one can easily distinguish the above-mentioned different phases. The magnetic contribution of theCP-TnearTN(11.2 K) has been analyzed using the power-law expressionCM=A|T-TN|-αresulting in the critical exponentα= 0.18 ± 0.01 (0.15 ± 0.003) forTTN), respectively for the Co3V2O8. It is interesting to note that non-Debye type dipole relaxation is quite prominent in Co3V2O8and was evident from the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts analysis of complex modulus and impedance spectra (0⩽ß⩽1). Mott's variable-range hopping of charge carriers process is evident through the resistivity analysis (ρac-T-1/4) in the temperature range 275 ∘C-350 ∘C. Moreover, the frequency-dependent analysis ofσac(ω) follows Jonscher's power law yielding two distinct activation energies (Ea∼0.37 and 2.29 eV) between the temperature range 39 ∘C-99 ∘C and 240 ∘C-321 ∘C.

Local magnetostructural changes and dynamical spin fluctuations in doubly diluted spinel TixMn1‒x(FeyCo1‒y)2O4has been reported by means of neutron diffraction and magnetization studies. Two distinct sets of compositions (i)x(Ti) = 0.20 andy(Fe) = 0.18; (ii)x(Ti) = 0.40 andy(Fe) = 0.435 have been considered for this study. The first compound of equivalent stoichiometry Ti0.20Mn0.80Fe0.36Co1.64O4exhibits enhanced tetragonal distortion across the ferrimagnetic transition temperatureTC= 258 K in comparison to the end compound MnCo2O4(TC∼ 180 K) with a characteristic ratioct/√2atof 0.99795(8) demonstrating robust lattice-spin-orbital coupling. However, in the second case Ti0.40Mn0.60Fe0.87Co1.13O4with higherB-site compositions, the presence of Jahn-Teller ions with distinct behavior appears to counterbalance the strong tetragonal distortion thereby ceasing the lattice-spin-orbital coupling. Both the investigated systems show the coexistence of noncollinear antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic components in cubic and tetragonal settings. On the other hand, the dynamical ac-susceptibility,χac(T) reveals a cluster spin-glass state with Gabay-Toulouse (GT) like mixed phases behaviour belowTC. Such dispersive behaviour appears to be sensitive to the level of octahedral substitution. Further, the field dependence ofχac(T) follows the weak anisotropic GT-line behaviour with crossover exponent Φ lies in the range 1.38-1.52 on theH-Tplane which is in contrast to theB-site Ti substituted MnCo2O4spinel that appears to follow irreversible non-mean-field AT-line behaviour (Φ âˆ¼ 3 +δ). Finally, the Arrott plots analysis indicates the presence of a pseudo first-order like transition (T< 20 K) which is in consonance with and zero crossover of the magnetic entropy change within the frozen spin-glass regime.

Paclitaxel (Taxol), one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, is poorly soluble in water and requires cremophor, which often causes infusion reactions, as a solvent. Nanoxel, a nanoparticle formulation of the taxane, has been approved by the Indian regulatory authority. In the present article, we aim to describe the experience with the use of Nanoxel in India and its clinical and economic implications. We present three retrospective series in a common practice environment and an economic model. The first series shows no reactions in 596 Nanoxel infusions; the second series shows comparable adverse events other than infusion reactions between 83 patients who received Nanoxel and 32 treated with conventional paclitaxel. The third reveals comparable clinical outcomes for 51 patients treated with Nanoxel or conventional paclitaxel for gastroesophageal tumors. Finally, we describe an economic model which estimates savings of 21 580 Indian rupees per cycle with Nanoxel vis-à-vis conventional paclitaxel in the treatment of solid tumors in India. In conclusion, in an era in which the greatest challenge we face as medical oncologists is how to conciliate hard-won and incremental--but small--improvements in survival with exponentially rising drugs costs, it is refreshing to see a potential new formulation of a commonly used drug that may actually generate cost-savings while improving clinical outcomes and patient well-being. Further studies are clearly warranted to determine the optimal dose and schedule for Nanoxel as well as its comparative effectiveness to cremophor-based paclitaxel.
