RESUMO

This study, reports for the first time, the neuropsychological profile of a child with Hamamy syndrome-a rare genetic disorder with only five published cases (Buget, Canbolat, Akgul, & Kucukay, 2015). The patient was seen for a neuropsychological evaluation at ages 6 and 7, at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. Procedures included an extended clinical interview with the parent, behavioral observations, formal tests, and a series of parental rating scales. Patient was found to have relatively spared nonverbal intelligence, borderline-impaired language, and clinically impaired verbal reasoning, attention, and motor coordination. Additionally, he showed clinically significant concerns with behavioral regulation, metacognition, attention-deficit, and hyperactivity/impulsivity. The patient was diagnosed with a DSM-V Language Disorder, Speech Sound Disorder, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, combined presentation, in the context of low-average intelligence. At follow-up, the neuropsychological profile was consistent, albeit improvement was noted following pharmacotherapy. This is the first published report that describes the neuropsychological functions of Hamamy syndrome. We make recommendations for early identification of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and interventions to address them. Future research should evaluate additional functions such as memory and social/emotional development. (JINS, 2019, 25, 336-342).

RESUMO

The growing interdisciplinary research field of psycholinguistics is in constant need of new and up-to-date tools which will allow researchers to answer complex questions, but also expand on languages other than English, which dominates the field. One type of such tools are picture datasets which provide naming norms for everyday objects. However, existing databases tend to be small in terms of the number of items they include, and have also been normed in a limited number of languages, despite the recent boom in multilingualism research. In this paper we present the Multilingual Picture (Multipic) database, containing naming norms and familiarity scores for 500 coloured pictures, in thirty-two languages or language varieties from around the world. The data was validated with standard methods that have been used for existing picture datasets. This is the first dataset to provide naming norms, and translation equivalents, for such a variety of languages; as such, it will be of particular value to psycholinguists and other interested researchers. The dataset has been made freely available.

RESUMO

The multiplication of social networking sites has led to increased frequency of use among young adults. While the association with mental wellbeing is still controversial, high levels of social media use were correlated with problematic behaviours, low self-esteem and depressive symptoms. 'Social Media Detoxification' (Detox) is the term used to describe voluntary attempts at reducing or stopping social media use to improve wellbeing. We conducted a pilot study to explore the characteristics of social media detoxification applied by 68 university students in their social media activity. Descriptive analysis revealed that most students reported a positive change in mood, reduced anxiety and improved sleep during and in the immediate aftermath of the detoxification period. These preliminary findings show that 'social media detoxification' is a phenomenon understood and used by university students to moderate their social media use. Wide variability in its application and effects is noted in our sample.

RESUMO

The Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT) is a cognitive test used to assess patients' manual dexterity, rapid visual-motor coordination and psychomotor speed. Studies have shown that performance on the GPT is associated to cognitive functions and examinee's demographics; however, none of which involved Arab populations. The present study aims to explore motor dexterity as measured by the GPT and its relationship to intellectual abilities, age, gender and education in a sample of Lebanese individuals. We reviewed the charts of 330 patients who were administered the GPT as part of larger cognitive batteries in an outpatient diagnostic center in Beirut, Lebanon between September 2013 and September 2016. Results from this sample suggest that a higher Full Scale IQ, and an older age contribute to a better performance on the GPT, whereas gender and grade level are not significant predictors of performance. Results also show a significant difference between the performance of patients diagnosed with a Developmental Coordination Disorder and patients with no neurodevelopmental diagnosis.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has struck many countries globally. Jordan has implemented strict nationwide control measures to halt the viral spread, one of which was the closure of universities and shifting to remote teaching. The impact of this pandemic could extend beyond the risk of physical harm to substantial psychological consequences. Our study aimed at assessing 1) psychological status, 2) challenges of distance teaching, and 3) coping activities and pandemic-related concerns among university teachers in Jordan in the midst of COVID-19-related quarantine and control measures. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an anonymous online survey. The measure of psychological distress was obtained using a validated Arabic version of the Kessler Distress Scale (K10). Other information collected included sociodemographic profile, methods used to handle distress, motivation to participate in distance teaching, and challenges of distance teaching as well as the most worrisome issues during this pandemic. Three hundred eighty-two university teachers returned completed surveys. Results of K10 showed that 31.4% of respondents had severe distress and 38.2% had mild to moderate distress. Whereas gender was not associated with distress severity, age had a weak negative correlation (Rho = -0.19, P < 0.0001). Interestingly, most teachers had moderate to high motivation for distance teaching. Engagement with family was the most reported self-coping activity. More than half of the participants were most concerned and fearful about SARS-CoV-2 infection. In conclusion, university teachers have shown to exhibit various levels of psychological distress and challenges during the implementation of precautionary national measures in the battle against COVID-19 in Jordan.
