RESUMO

The fine and dynamic structure of the copper(II) ion solvated in a protic ionic liquid (PIL) comprising monoprotonated N-hexylethylenediaminium (HHexen(+)) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Tf2N(-)) [or trifluoroacetate (TFA(-))] was determined using NMR, visible electronic, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The chelate-diamine group in the cationic unit facilitates advantageous dissolution of transition-metal salts in the present PIL. The interaction of the copper(II) ion with the chelate-diamine PIL was explored by the addition of copper(II) salts to the PIL, demonstrating competitive complexation between the ligand of the added copper(II) salt and the components of the ionic liquid to the copper(II) ion. The favorable mode of interaction of the present chelating PIL with the copper(II) ion was clarified based on a comparison of the interactions with analogous liquids, including the monoprotonated hexylaminium HHexam(Tf2N)-PIL, neat N-hexylethylenediamine (Hexen), and neat ethylenediamine (En). The coordination modes of the bis-Hexen and tris-Hexen copper(II) complexes in molecular liquids and in solids were also studied for comparison of the coordination structures around the copper(II) ion with those in the present PILs. The paramagnetic-induced relaxations derived from (13)C (ΔT(1p)(-1)) and (15)N (ΔT(2p)(-1)) NMR, the visible electronic spectra, and EXAFS analysis showed that the copper(II) ion tends to form a bis-Hexen complex in the HHexen-PIL despite the electrostatic repulsion and the fact that the counteranions are located at the axial sites, whereas in the HHexam(Tf2N)-PIL, the copper(II) ion exhibits affinity for the Tf2N anion over the protonated amines. The lifetime of the copper(II) complex formed in the PIL was determined to be ≈10(-4) s based on (13)C (ΔT(1p)(-1)) and (14)N (ΔT(2p)(-1)) NMR, which is appreciably longer than that in conventional molecular solvents.

The cognitive ability to self-monitor one's current performance is important for hospital nurses to maintain safety and health. However, studies on the effects of rotating shift work on self-monitoring ability are insufficient. We examined the differences in self-monitoring accuracy across shifts in a rotating three-shift system among 30 female ward nurses (mean age 28.2 years). Their self-monitoring ability was calculated by subtracting the predicted reaction times of the psychomotor vigilance task performed just before exiting the workplace from the actual reaction times. A mixed-effect model was employed to assess the effects of shift, awake hours, and prior sleep duration on self-monitoring ability. We observed impaired self-monitoring ability in nurses, particularly after the night shift. Although actual performance remained high across all shifts, their self-predictions on reaction times became pessimistic in the night shift, resulting in a difference of approximately-100 msec. The effect of the shift on self-monitoring was obvious even after adjusting for sleep duration and hours awake. Our findings indicate that the misalignment between their working hours and circadian rhythms may affect even professional nurses. Occupational management that emphasizes maintaining circadian rhythms will improve the safety and health of nurses.

More knowledge is required to determine the optimal shiftwork schedule to reduce the harmful effects of short restart breaks between shifts. This 5-month intervention study aimed to examine the effectiveness of extended restart breaks from 31 h to 55 h after consecutive night shifts by considering the characteristics of the circadian rhythm to mitigate fatigue and sleep among 30 shift-working nurses. Subjective and objective variables, such as vital exhaustion, distress, hair cortisol, salivary C-reactive protein, and sleep mattress sensor sensation, were repeatedly measured to examine the differences between the intervention and control conditions. Two-way (condition × time) multilevel analyses showed significantly lower levels of vital exhaustion and distress in the intervention condition (p = 0.005 and p = 0.004, respectively). However, the expected benefit of the intervention was not observed in objectively measured variables. These findings suggested that an extended restart break after consecutive night shifts can moderately decrease occupational fatigue and stress.

People with schizophrenia or subclinical schizotypal traits exhibit impaired recognition of facial expressions. However, it remains unclear whether the detection of emotional facial expressions is impaired in people with schizophrenia or high levels of schizotypy. The present study examined whether the detection of emotional facial expressions would be associated with schizotypy in a non-clinical population after controlling for the effects of IQ, age, and sex. Participants were asked to respond to whether all faces were the same as quickly and as accurately as possible following the presentation of angry or happy faces or their anti-expressions among crowds of neutral faces. Anti-expressions contain a degree of visual change that is equivalent to that of normal emotional facial expressions relative to neutral facial expressions and are recognized as neutral expressions. Normal expressions of anger and happiness were detected more rapidly and accurately than their anti-expressions. Additionally, the degree of overall schizotypy was negatively correlated with the effectiveness of detecting normal expressions versus anti-expressions. An emotion-recognition task revealed that the degree of positive schizotypy was negatively correlated with the accuracy of facial expression recognition. These results suggest that people with high levels of schizotypy experienced difficulties detecting and recognizing emotional facial expressions.

The present study examined whether fundamental sensory functions such as temporal processing and multisensory integration are related to autistic traits in the general population. Both a narrower temporal window (TW) for simultaneous perception, as measured by a temporal order judgement task, and a reduced ability to engage in multisensory integration during the sound-induced flash illusion task were related to higher levels of autistic traits. Additionally, a narrow TW is associated with high levels of autistic traits due to a deficiency in multisensory integration. Taken together, these findings suggest that alterations in fundamental functions produce a cascading effect on higher-order social and cognitive functions, such as those experienced by people with autism spectrum disorder.

The present study examined the relationship between multisensory integration and the temporal binding window (TBW) for multisensory processing in adults with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The ASD group was less likely than the typically developing group to perceive an illusory flash induced by multisensory integration during a sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) task. Although both groups showed comparable TBWs during the multisensory temporal order judgment task, correlation analyses and Bayes factors provided moderate evidence that the reduced SIFI susceptibility was associated with the narrow TBW in the ASD group. These results suggest that the individuals with ASD exhibited atypical multisensory integration and that individual differences in the efficacy of this process might be affected by the temporal processing of multisensory information.

A coiled coil-nucleotide binding site-leucine rich repeat-type resistance gene, RCY1, confers resistance to a yellow strain of Cucumber mosaic virus, CMV(Y), in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype C24. Resistance to CMV(Y) in C24 is accompanied by a hypersensitive response (HR) that is characterized by the development of necrotic local lesions at the primary infection sites. To further study the HR and resistance to CMV(Y) in ecotype Col-0, which is susceptible to CMV(Y), Col-0 were transformed with RCY1. Systemic spread of CMV(Y) was completely suppressed in RCY1-transformed Col-0 (Col::pRCY1 lines 2 to 6), whereas virulent strain CMV(B2) spread and multiplied systemically in these transgenic lines similar to that in wild-type Col-0. Interestingly, the resistant phenotype of Col::pRCY1 varied among the lines. In lines 3 and 6, in which levels of RCY1 transcript were similar to that in wild-type C24, the HR and resistance to CMV(Y) was induced. Line 4, which expresses moderately elevated levels of RCY1 transcript, exhibited moderately enhanced resistance compared with that in C24 or line 3. In contrast, lines 2 and 5, which highly overexpress the RCY1 gene, did not exhibit either visible lesions or a micro-HR on the inoculated leaves. Moreover, virus coat protein was not detected in either inoculated or noninoculated upper leaves of these two lines, suggesting that extreme resistance (ER) to CMV(Y) was induced by high levels of expression of RCY1. Furthermore, in transgenic lines expressing hemagglutinin (HA) epitope-tagged RCY1 (Col::pRCY1-HA), high levels of accumulation of RCY1-HA protein were also correlated with the ER phenotype. Global gene expression analysis in line 2, which highly overexpresses RCY1, indicated that expression of several defense-related genes were constitutively elevated compared with wild-type Col-0. Despite this, line 2 did not have enhanced resistance to other avirulent and virulent pathogens. Take together, constitutive accumulation of high levels of RCY1 protein appears to regulate the strength of RCY1-conferred resistance in a gene-for-gene manner and implies that ER and HR-associated resistance differ only in the strength of resistance.

Ionic liquids of an N-alkylethylenediamine-silver(I) complex cation (alkyl=hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, and octyl) or a protic N-alkylethylenediaminium cation (alkyl=butyl, hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, octyl, decyl, and dodecyl) with a bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide counter anion (Ag-ILs and PILs, respectively) were prepared and their physicochemical properties were investigated. The trend of solidification decreased in the order octyl≫hexyl>2-ethylhexyl for the Ag-ILs, and butyl>dodecyl>decyl>octyl>hexyl≫2-ethylhexyl for the PILs. The diffusion coefficients of the cations indicated stronger intermolecular interactions in PILs than in the Ag-ILs because of hydrogen-bonding networks, and it has been revealed that the intermolecular interactions increase in the order, hexyl
