RESUMO

The Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG) LY.17 is an ongoing multi-arm randomized phase II trial evaluating novel salvage therapies compared with R-GDP (rituximab, gemcitabine, dexamethasone and cisplatin) in autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT)-eligible patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (RR-DLBCL). This component of the LY.17 trial evaluated a dose-intensive chemotherapy approach using a single cycle of inpatient R-DICEP (rituximab, dose-intensive cyclophosphamide, etoposide and cisplatin) to achieve both lymphoma response and stem cell mobilization, shortening time to ASCT. This report is the result of the protocol-specified second interim analysis of the 67 patients who were randomized to either 1 cycle of R-DICEP or to 3 cycles of R-GDP. The overall response rate (ORR) was 65.6% for R-DICEP and 48.6% for R-GDP. The ASCT rate was 71.9% versus 54.3%, and 1-year progression-free survival rate was 42% versus 32%, respectively, for R-DICEP versus R-GDP. Although the improvement in ORR for R-DICEP versus R-GDP exceeded the pre-specified 10% threshold to proceed to full accrual of 64 patients/arm, higher rates of grade 3-5 toxicities, and the need for hospitalization led to the decision to stop this arm of the study. CCTG LY.17 will continue to evaluate different salvage regimens that incorporate novel agents.

RESUMO

Tioxazafen is a seed-applied nematicide used in row crops. Currently, there are no data on nematode toxicity, nematode recovery, or effects of low concentrations of tioxazafen on nematode infection of a host root for Meloidogyne incognita or Rotylenchulus reniformis. Nematode toxicity and recovery experiments were conducted in water solutions of tioxazafen, while root infection assays were conducted on tomato. Nematode paralysis was observed after 24 hr of exposure at 27.0 µg/ml tioxazafen for both the nematode species. Based on an assay of nematode motility, 24-hr EC50 values of 57.69 µg/ml and 59.64 µg/ml tioxazafen were calculated for M. incognita and R. reniformis, respectively. Tioxazafen rates of 2.7 µg/ml and 27.0 µg/ml reduced the nematode hatch after 3 d of exposure for both the nematode species. There was no recovery in nematode motility after the 24-hr exposure of M. incognita and R. reniformis to their corresponding 48-hr EC50 values of 47.15 µg/ml and 47.25 µg/ml tioxazafen, respectively. Mortality of M. incognita continued to increase after 24 hr exposure, whereas R. reniformis mortality remain unchanged after nematodes were rinsed and removed for 48 hr from the tioxazafen solution. A 24-hr exposure to low concentrations of 0.38 to 47.15 µg/ml for M. incognita and 47.25 µg/ml for R. reniformis reduced the infectivity of each nematode species on tomato roots. The toxicity of tioxazafen was similar between nematode species; however, a greater rate of tioxazafen was needed to suppress R. reniformis infection of tomato than for M. incognita.

RESUMO

"Deep-sea" cephalopods are here defined as cephalopods that spend a significant part of their life cycles outside the euphotic zone. In this chapter, the state of knowledge in several aspects of deep-sea cephalopod research are summarized, including information sources for these animals, diversity and general biogeography and life cycles, including reproduction. Recommendations are made for addressing some of the remaining knowledge deficiencies using a variety of traditional and more recently developed methods. The types of oceanic gear that are suitable for collecting cephalopod specimens and images are reviewed. Many groups of deep-sea cephalopods require taxonomic reviews, ideally based on both morphological and molecular characters. Museum collections play a vital role in these revisions, and novel (molecular) techniques may facilitate new use of old museum specimens. Fundamental life-cycle parameters remain unknown for many species; techniques developed for neritic species that could potentially be applied to deep-sea cephalopods are discussed. Reproductive tactics and strategies in deep-sea cephalopods are very diverse and call for comparative evolutionary and experimental studies, but even in the twenty-first century, mature individuals are still unknown for many species. New insights into diet and trophic position have begun to reveal a more diverse range of feeding strategies than the typically voracious predatory lifestyle known for many cephalopods. Regular standardized deep-sea cephalopod surveys are necessary to provide insight into temporal changes in oceanic cephalopod populations and to forecast, verify and monitor the impacts of global marine changes and human impacts on these populations.

RESUMO

For the purpose of realizing inherently safe high-power Li-ion batteries, a model Li4Ti5O12/LiFePO4 rechargeable battery is investigated using the thermally responsive polymer, poly(benzyl methacrylate), in an ionic liquid. At high temperature, battery operation is inhibited as a result of increased internal resistance caused by polymer and ionic liquid phase separation. Li-ion concentration is shown to affect the phase transition temperature and the extent to which batteries are deactivated.

RESUMO

A thermally responsive copolymer is designed to modulate the properties of an electrolyte solution. The copolymer is prepared using pNIPAM, which governs the thermal properties, and acrylic acid, which provides the electrolyte ions. As the polymer undergoes a thermally activated phase transition, the local environment around the acid groups is reversibly switched, decreasing ion concentration and conductivity. The responsive electrolyte is used to control the activity of redox electrodes with temperature.
