RESUMO

The optoelectronic properties of semiconducting aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN)-based ultraviolet-B (UVB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are crucial for real-world medical applications such as cancer therapy and immunotherapy. However, the performance of AlGaN-based UVB LED devices is still poor due to the low hole injection efficiency. Therefore, we have numerically investigated the performance of AlGaN-based UVB LEDs for the suppression of efficiency droop as well as for the enhancement of hole injection in the multiquantum wells (MQWs). The influence of the undoped (ud)-AlGaN final quantum barrier (FQB), as well as the Mg-doped multiquantum barrier electron blocking layer (p-MQB EBL), on the efficiency droop has been focused on specifically. To evaluate the performance of the proposed device, we have compared its internal quantum efficiency (IQE), carrier concentration, energy band diagram, and radiative recombination rate with the conventional device structure. Furthermore, the influence of Al composition in the Al-graded p-AlGaN hole source layer (HSL) on the operating voltages of the proposed UVB LEDs was considered. The simulation results suggest that our proposed structure has a high peak efficiency and much lower efficiency droop as compared to the reference structure (conventional). Ultimately, the radiative recombination rate in the MQWs of the proposed UVB LED-N structure has increased up to ∼73%, which is attributed to the enhanced level of electron and hole concentrations by ∼64% and 13%, respectively, in the active region. Finally, a high efficiency droop of up to ∼42% in RLED has been successfully suppressed, to ∼7%, by using the optimized ud-AlGaN FQB and the p-MQB EBL, as well as introducing Al-graded p-AlGaN HSL in the proposed UVB LED-N structure.

RESUMO

Mg-doped p-type semiconducting aluminium-gallium-nitride hole source layer (p-AlGaN HSL) materials are quite promising as a source of hole 'p' carriers for the ultraviolet-B (UVB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs). However, the p-AlGaN HSL has a central issue of low hole injection due to poor activation of Mg atoms, and the presence of unwanted impurity contamination and the existence of a localized coherent state. Therefore, first the impact of the Mg level on the crystallinity, Al composition and relaxation conditions in the p-AlGaN HSL were studied. An increasing trend in the lattice-relaxation ratios with increasing Mg concentrations in the p-AlGaN HSL were observed. Ultimately, a 40%-60% relaxed and 1.4 µm thick p-AlGaN HSL structure with total threading dislocation densities (total-TDDs) of approximately ∼8-9 × 108 cm-2 was achieved, which almost matches our previous design of a 4 µm thick and 50% relaxed n-AlGaN electron source layer (ESL) with total-TDDs of approximately ∼7-8 × 108 cm-2. Subsequently, structurally a symmetric p-n junction for UVB emitters was accomplished. Finally, the influence of excimer laser annealing (ELA) on the activation of Mg concentration and on suppression of unwanted impurities as well as on the annihilation of the localized energy state in the p-AlGaN HSL were thoroughly investigated. ELA treatment suggested a reduced Ga-N bonding ratio and increased Ga-O, as well as Ga-Ga bonding ratios in the p-AlGaN HSL. After ELA treatment the localized coherent state was suppressed and, ultimately, the photoluminescence emission efficiency as well as conductivity were drastically improved in the p-AlGaN HSL. By using lightly polarized p-AlGaN HSL assisted by ELA treatment, quite low resistivity in p-type AlGaN HSL at room temperature (hole concentration is ∼2.6 × 1016 cm-3, the hole mobility is ∼9.6 cm2 V1 s-1 and the resistivity is ∼24.39 Ω. cm) were reported. ELA treatment has great potential for localized activation of p-AlGaN HSL as well as n- and p-electrodes on n-AlGaN and p-AlGaN contact layers during the flip-chip (FC) process in low operating UVB emitters, including UVB lasers.

RESUMO

Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization and ethanol gas sensing application of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process and characterized through various characterization techniques. The detailed characterizations confirmed that the synthesized Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles are grown in high density with an average diameter of ~20 ± 5 nm, possessing well-crystalline wurtzite hexagonal crystal structure and exhibiting good optical properties. The as-synthesized Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles were further used as functional material to fabricate efficient ethanol gas sensor which exhibited excellent gas response. The detailed gas sensing experiments revealed that at an optimized temperature, i.e., 320 °C, the recorded gas response was 32.815 for 200 ppm concentration of ethanol gas. Finally, a plausible gas sensing mechanism was also presented in this paper.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Improvement of crop production is needed to feed the growing world population as the amount and quality of agricultural land decreases and soil salinity increases. This has stimulated research on salt tolerance in plants. Most crops tolerate a limited amount of salt to survive and produce biomass, while halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) have the ability to grow with saline water utilizing specific biochemical mechanisms. However, little is known about the genes involved in salt tolerance. We have characterized the transcriptome of Suaeda fruticosa, a halophyte that has the ability to sequester salts in its leaves. Suaeda fruticosa is an annual shrub in the family Chenopodiaceae found in coastal and inland regions of Pakistan and Mediterranean shores. This plant is an obligate halophyte that grows optimally from 200-400 mM NaCl and can grow at up to 1000 mM NaCl. High throughput sequencing technology was performed to provide understanding of genes involved in the salt tolerance mechanism. De novo assembly of the transcriptome and analysis has allowed identification of differentially expressed and unique genes present in this non-conventional crop. RESULTS: Twelve sequencing libraries prepared from control (0 mM NaCl treated) and optimum (300 mM NaCl treated) plants were sequenced using Illumina Hiseq 2000 to investigate differential gene expression between shoots and roots of Suaeda fruticosa. The transcriptome was assembled de novo using Velvet and Oases k-45 and clustered using CDHIT-EST. There are 54,526 unigenes; among these 475 genes are downregulated and 44 are upregulated when samples from plants grown under optimal salt are compared with those grown without salt. BLAST analysis identified the differentially expressed genes, which were categorized in gene ontology terms and their pathways. CONCLUSIONS: This work has identified potential genes involved in salt tolerance in Suaeda fruticosa, and has provided an outline of tools to use for de novo transcriptome analysis. The assemblies that were used provide coverage of a considerable proportion of the transcriptome, which allows analysis of differential gene expression and identification of genes that may be involved in salt tolerance. The transcriptome may serve as a reference sequence for study of other succulent halophytes.

RESUMO

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the exploration of sustainable and eco-friendly materials well-suited for advanced applications in the realms of thermoelectrics and optoelectronics. Lead-free halide double perovskites have emerged as a compelling class of materials in this context. Nevertheless, despite their potential utility, thorough investigations into their thermal transport characteristics remain limited. In this systematic investigation, we employ density functional theory (DFT) and post-DFT techniques to elucidate the essential stability parameters, transport properties, and carrier-lattice interactions of the metal halide-based Cs2MGaBr6 (X = Li, Ga) double perovskites. Our assessment of structural stability involves a meticulous description of stability index parameters and the optimization of pristine structures using the GGA-PBE potential. Additionally, we calibrate the electronic structure while taking spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects into consideration by using a combination of GGA and GGA + mBJ potentials. Our findings reveal that the TB-mBJ derived band gaps of 1.82 eV and 1.78 eV for Cs2LiGaBr6 and Cs2NaGaBr6 reside within the visible spectrum, prompting further investigation into their thermal transport characteristics. Moreover, we analyze the phonon characteristics and vibrational modes, extending our investigation to examine the electron-phonon coupling strength. The scrutiny of the Fröhlich coupling constant and the Feynman polaron radius unveils a stronger electron-phonon coupling strength. In the domain of thermoelectrics, the significant figure of merit (zT) values of 1.08 and 1.04 for Cs2LiGaBr6 and Cs2NaGaBr6, respectively, emphasize the considerable potential of these materials for deployment in renewable energy applications. Furthermore, our computational investigation into optical properties, including the dielectric constant, optical absorption, and refractive index, demonstrates optimal performance within the visible spectrum. Specifically, elevated absorption coefficient values of 30 × 10 4 cm - 1 for Cs2LiGaBr6 and 40 × 10 4 cm - 1 for Cs2NaGaBr6 are noted across visible and infrared spectra, highlighting their promising potential in optoelectronic and solar cell technologies.

RESUMO

Crystal growth of eco-friendly, ultrawide bandgap aluminium gallium nitride (AlGaN) semiconductor-based ultraviolet-B (UVB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) hold the potential to replace toxic mercury-based ultraviolet lamps. One of the major drawbacks in the utilisation of AlGaN-based UVB LEDs is their low efficiency of about 6.5%. The study investigates the influence of Al-graded p-type multi-quantum-barrier electron-blocking-layer (Al-grad p-MQB EBL) and Al-graded p-AlGaN hole source layer (HSL) on the generation and injection of 3D holes in the active region. Using the new UVB LED design, a significant improvement in the experimental efficiency and light output power of about 8.2% and 36 mW is noticed. This is accomplished by the transparent nature of Al-graded Mg-doped p-AlGaN HSL for 3D holes generation and p-MQB EBL structure for holes transport toward multi-quantum-wells via intra-band tunnelling. Based on both the numerical and experimental studies, the influence of sub-nanometre scale Ni film deposited underneath the 200 nm-thick Al-film p-electrode on the optical reflectance in UVB LED is investigated. A remarkable improvement in the efficiency of up to 9.6% and light output power of 40 mW, even in the absence of standard package, flip-chip, and resin-like lenses, is achieved on bare-wafer under continuous-wave operation at room temperature. The enhanced performance is attributed to the use of Al-graded p-MQB EBL coupled with softly polarised p-AlGaN HSL and the highly reflective 0.4 nm-thick Ni and 200 nm-thick Al p-electrode in the UVB LED. This research study provides a new avenue to improve the performance of high-power p-AlGaN-based UVB LEDs and other optoelectronic devices in III-V semiconductors.

RESUMO

New polymer blend composite electrolytes (PBCEs) were prepared by the solution casting technique using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-polyethylene glycol (PEG), sodium nitrate (NaNO3) as a doping salt and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as fillers. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the structural properties of the polymer blend composite films. FTIR investigations were carried out to understand the chemical properties and their band assignments. The ionic conductivity of the 10 wt % MWCNTs incorporated PVA-PEG polymer blend was measured as 4.32 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 20 °C and increased to 2.253 × 10-4 S/cm at 100 °C. The dependence of its conductivity on temperature suggests Arrhenius behavior. The equivalent circuit models that represent the R s(Q1(R1(Q2(R2(CR3))))) were used to interpret EIS data. The dielectric behavior of the samples was investigated by utilizing their AC conductance spectra, dielectric permittivity, dielectric constant (εi and εr), electric modulus (Mi and Mr), and loss tangent tan δ. The dielectric permittivity of the samples increases due to electrode polarization effects in low frequency region. The loss tangent's maxima shift with increasing temperature; hence, the peak height rises in the high frequency region. MWCNTs-based polymer blend composite electrolytes show an enhanced electrochemical stability window (4.0 V), better transference number (0.968), and improved ionic conductivity for use in energy storage device applications.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the influence of feeding low and high preweaning allowances of unpasteurized whole milk (MA) on intake, selected blood metabolites, antibody response, mammary gland growth, and growth of New Zealand (NZ) dairy heifers to 7 mo of age. At 10 ± 2 d of age (study day 0), group-housed (six·pen-1) heifer calves (Holstein-Friesian × Jersey) were allocated to low (4 L whole milk·calf-1·d-1; n = 7 pens) or high (8 L whole milk·calf-1·d-1; n = 7 pens) MA for the next 63 d. Calves were gradually weaned between days 63 ± 2 and 73 ± 2. Calves in each pen had ad-libitum access to clean water, pelleted calf starter, and chopped grass hay from day 1 to 91 ± 2 d. At 92 ± 2 d, all calves were transferred to pasture, grazed in a mob, and their growth and selected blood metabolites were measured until day 209. All animals were weighed weekly during the indoor period (to day 91) and then at days 105, 112, 128, 162, 184, and 209. Skeletal growth measurements and blood samples to analyze selected metabolites were collected at the start of the experiment, weaning, and then postweaning on day 91, and day 201. Specific antibodies against Leptospira and Clostridia were quantified in weeks 7, 13, and 27. Mammary glands were scanned using ultrasonography at the start of the experiment, weaning, and day 201. Feeding high vs. low amounts of MA increased the preweaning growth in heifer calves (P = 0.02) without negatively affecting postweaning average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.74). Compared with heifers fed with low MA, high MA fed heifers had a greater increase in antibodies against Leptospira and Clostridia by 13 wk of age (P = 0.0007 and P = 0.06, respectively). By 27 wk of age, the antibody response was the same in heifers offered low or high MA. There was no effect of MA on the total size of the mammary gland, measured by ultrasonography, at weaning and 7 mo of age. However, the greater MA was associated with more mammary parenchyma (P = 0.01) and less mammary fat pad (P = 0.03) in back glands at 7 mo of age compared with heifers fed lower MA. In conclusion, feeding a high vs. a low amount of unpasteurized whole milk increased the preweaning growth of New Zealand replacement heifers without negatively affecting their ADG during postweaning under grazing conditions. Feeding more (8 vs. 4 L·d-1) unpasteurized whole milk positively affected antibody responses early in life and mammary gland composition by 7 mo of age in dairy heifers reared for pasture-based dairy systems.

This study evaluated the effect of unpasteurized whole milk allowance on intake, antibody response, mammary gland growth, and growth performance of heifers until 7 mo of age. Feeding greater (8 L·d−1) vs. lower (4 L·d−1) milk allowance to heifer calves increased preweaning body weight without having any negative effect on postweaning growth under grazing. Heifers fed high milk allowance had significantly better antibody responses against Leptospira and Clostridia by 3 mo of age and had more mammary parenchyma (potential milk making tissue), and less mammary fat pad (supporting tissue) by 7 mo of age.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The nutrition of calves from birth until weaning is predominantly from liquid (milk or milk-based) feeds. Liquid feed allowances are often restricted during artificial rearing to accelerate the development of the rumen by promoting solid feed intake. Liquid feeds bypass the rumen and are digested in the lower digestive tract, however, the influence of different types of milk feeds, and their allowances, on the calf hindgut microbiota is not well understood. In this study, faecal samples from 199 calves raised on three different allowances of milk replacer: 10% of initial bodyweight (LA), 20% of initial bodyweight (HA), and ad libitum (ADLIB), were collected just prior to weaning. Bacterial community structures and fermentation products were analysed, and their relationships with calf growth and health parameters were examined to identify potential interactions between diet, gut microbiota and calf performance. RESULTS: Differences in the total concentrations of short-chain fatty acids were not observed, but higher milk replacer allowances increased the concentrations of branched short-chain fatty acids and decreased acetate to propionate ratios. The bacterial communities were dominated by Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroides, and the bacterial diversity of the ADLIB diet group was greater than that of the other diet groups. Faecalibacterium was over three times more abundant in the ADLIB compared to the LA group, and its abundance correlated strongly with girth and body weight gains. Milk replacer intake correlated strongly with Peptococcus and Blautia, which also correlated with body weight gain. Bifidobacterium averaged less than 1% abundance, however its levels, and those of Clostridium sensu stricto 1, correlated strongly with initial serum protein levels, which are an indicator of colostrum intake and passive transfer of immunoglobulins in early life. CONCLUSIONS: Higher milk replacer intakes in calves increased hindgut bacterial diversity and resulted in bacterial communities and short chain fatty acid profiles associated with greater protein fermentation. Increased abundances of beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium, were also observed, which may contribute to development and growth. Moreover, correlations between microbial taxa and initial serum protein levels suggest that colostrum intake in the first days of life may influence microbiota composition at pre-weaning.

RESUMO

This study addressed the interactions between salt stress and the antioxidant responses of a halophytic grass, Desmostachya bipinnata. Plants were grown in a semi-hydroponic system and treated with different NaCl concentrations (0 mM, 100 mM, 400 mM) for a month. ROS degradation enzyme activities were stimulated by addition of NaCl. Synthesis of antioxidant compounds, such as phenols, was enhanced in the presence of NaCl leading to accumulation of these compounds under moderate salinity. However, when the ROS production rate exceeded the capacity of enzyme-controlled degradation, antioxidant compounds were consumed and oxidative damage was indicated by significant levels of hydrogen peroxide at high salinity. The cellular concentration of salicylic acid increased upon salt stress, but since no direct interaction with ROS was detected, a messenger function may be postulated. High salinity treatment caused a significant decrease of plant growth parameters, whereas treatment with moderate salinity resulted in optimal growth. The activity and abundance of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased with salinity, but the abundance of SOD isoforms was differentially affected, depending on the NaCl concentration applied. Detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was executed by catalase and guaiacol peroxidase at moderate salinity, whereas the enzymes detoxifying H2O2 through the ascorbate/glutathione cycle dominated at high salinity. The redox status of glutathione was impaired at moderate salinity, whereas the levels of both ascorbate and glutathione significantly decreased only at high salinity. Apparently, the maximal activation of enzyme-controlled ROS degradation was insufficient in comparison to the ROS production at high salinity. As a result, ROS-induced damage could not be prevented, if the applied stress exceeded a critical value in D. bipinnata plants.

RESUMO

Reactive oxygen species homeostasis during germination of heteromorphic seeds is not fully understood. This study elucidates changes in levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and enzymatic antioxidants in heteromorphic seeds of contrasting congeneric halophytes Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (C3 perennial) and A. indicum (C4 perennial) during germination under increasing salinity. There was no dormancy in A. macrostachyum (black and brown) and A. indicum (large and small) seeds. Seeds of A. macrostachyum displayed greater salinity tolerance compared to A. indicum seeds. Under non-saline conditions, large A. indicum seeds and brown A. macrostachyum seeds showed slightly higher germination than their respective counterparts. H2O2 content of black compared to brown A. macrostachyum seeds increased with salinity and that of small compared to large A. indicum seeds increased only in 400 mM NaCl. High catalase and ascorbate peroxidase with constitutive superoxide dismutase levels coincided with unaltered MDA in black A. macrostachyum seeds under salinity. Whereas, there was a decline in most antioxidant enzyme activities alongside low/unchanged H2O2 in the brown A. macrostachyum seeds under salinity. Unaltered H2O2 and MDA with low/unchanged antioxidant enzyme activities in large A. indicum seeds under salinity occurred. Unchanged enzyme activities alongside a rise in H2O2 and MDA levels were observed in the small A. indicum seeds under salinity. These data hence highlight differential H2O2 homeostasis strategies in the heteromorphic seeds of the test species.

RESUMO

Transcription factors are key regulatory elements that affect gene expression in response to specific signals, including environmental stresses such as salinity. Halophytes are specialized plants that have the ability to complete their life cycle in saline environments. In this study we have identified and characterized the evolutionary relationships of putative transcription factors (TF) in an obligate succulent halophyte, Suaeda fruticosa, that are involved in conferring salt tolerance. Using RNA-seq data we have analyzed the expression patterns of certain TF families, predicted protein-protein interactions, and analyzed evolutionary trajectories to elucidate their possible roles in salt tolerance. We have detected the top differentially expressed (DE) transcription factor families (MYB, CAMTA, MADS-box and bZIP) that show the most pronounced response to salinity. The majority of DE genes in the four aforementioned TF families cluster together on TF phylogenetic trees, which suggests common evolutionary origins and trajectories. This research represents the first comprehensive TF study of a leaf succulent halophyte including their evolutionary relationships with TFs in other halophyte and salt-senstive plants. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the function of salt-responsive transcription factors in salt tolerance and associated gene regulation in plants.

RESUMO

A proteomics approach was used to investigate salt tolerance mechanisms of Desmostachya bipinnata (L.) Stapf. Plants were subjected to 0mM (control), 100mM (moderate) and 400mM (high) NaCl. Proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified with available databases. Optimal plant fresh weight was found at moderate salinity but declined at high salinity. Water potential, osmotic potential, Na+/K+ ratio, leaf electrolyte leakage, sugars and proline were altered at high salinity. However, water potential, proline content and electrolyte leakage were maintained at moderate salinity; Na+ and K+ concentrations increased, whereas sugars and osmotic potential decreased. Comparative proteome analysis revealed 103 salt responsive proteins. At moderate salinity, most of the proteins involved in energy metabolism, transport, antioxidative defence and cell growth were either unchanged or increased. Proteins related to amino-acid metabolism were decreased while those associated with secondary metabolism were accumulated. At high salinity, amino-acid metabolism and dehydration responses were evident; proteins of energy metabolism, transport and stress defence were downregulated. These results suggest that an efficient defence system, improved transport of water and metabolites, increased cell wall lignification and regulation of energy and carbohydrate metabolism allowed better potential for plant growth under moderately saline conditions.

RESUMO

The alloy composition dependence of penetration range and backscattering coefficient of electrons normally impinging on SixGe1-x and GaAsxN1-x semiconductor alloys targets for beam energies in the range 0.5-3.5 keV has been investigated. The electron penetration range is calculated using the Ashley's model. The electron backscattering coefficient is determined using both the Vicanek and Urbassek theory where the transport cross-sections are obtained more accurately via an improved approximation and Monte Carlo method in which the inelastic scattering processes are treated via Ashley's optical model. Our results regarding the electron backscattering coefficient for Si and Ge targets are found to be much higher than those of experiment when using the Vicanek and Urbassek theory. However, the use of Ashley's model via Monte Carlo method gives results that are in reasonably good accord with the experimental data reported in the literature in the low energy regime being considered here.

RESUMO

Urochondra setulosa (Trin.) C.E. Hubbard is a coastal halophytic grass thriving on the coastal dunes along the Pakistani seashore. This grass could be useful in coastal sand dune stabilization using seawater irrigation. The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that Ca(2+) (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 50.0 mmol/L) alleviates the adverse effects of KCl, MgSO(4), NaCl and Na(2)SO(4) at 0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mmol/L on the germination of Urochondra setulosa. Seed germination was inhibited with increase in salt concentration with few seeds germinated at and above 400 mmol/L concentration. No seed germinated in any of the KCl treatments. Inclusion of CaCl(2) substantially alleviated the inhibitory effects of all salts. Germination was higher under photoperiod in comparison to those seeds germinated under complete darkness. Among the CaCl(2) concentrations used, 10 mmol/L was most effective in alleviating salinity effects and allowing few seeds to germinate at 1000 mmol/L KCl, MgSO(4), NaCl and Na(2)SO(4) solution.

RESUMO

Seed heteromorphism observed in many halophytes is an adaptive phenomenon toward high salinity. However, the relationship between heteromorphic seed germination and germination-related hormones under salt stress remains elusive. To gain an insight into this relationship, the roles of gibberellins (GAs) and abscisic acid (ABA) in regulating germination of Suaeda salsa dimorphic brown and black seeds under salinity were elucidated by studying the kinetics of the two hormones during germination of the two seed types with or without salinity treatment. Morphological analysis suggested that brown and black are in different development stage. The content of ABA was higher in dry brown than in black seeds, which gradually decreased after imbibition in water and salt solutions. Salt stress induced ABA accumulation in both germinating seed types, with higher induction effect on black than brown seeds. Black seeds showed lower germination percentage than brown seeds under both water and salt stress, which might be attributed to their higher ABA sensitivity rather than the difference in ABA content between black and brown seeds. Bioactive GA4 and its biosynthetic precursors showed higher levels in brown than in black seeds, whereas deactivated GAs showed higher content in black than brown seeds in dry or in germinating water or salt solutions. High salinity inhibited seed germination through decreasing the levels of GA4 in both seeds, and the inhibited effect of salt stress on GA4 level of black seeds was more profound than that of brown seeds. Taken together higher GA4 content, and lower ABA sensitivity contributed to the higher germination percentage of brown seeds than black seeds in water and salinity; increased ABA content and sensitivity, and decreased GA4 content by salinity were more profound in black than brown seeds, which contributed to lower germination of black seeds than brown seeds in salinity. The differential regulation of ABA and GA homeostases by salt stress in dimorphic seeds might provide a strategy for S. salsa plants to survive adverse environmental conditions.

RESUMO

Salinity causes oxidative stress in plants by enhancing production of reactive oxygen species, so that an efficient antioxidant system, of which ascorbic acid (AsA) is a key component, is an essential requirement of tolerance. However, antioxidant responses of plants to salinity vary considerably among species. Limonium stocksii is a sub-tropical halophyte found in the coastal marshes from Gujarat (India) to Karachi (Pakistan) but little information exists on its salt resistance. In order to investigate the role of AsA in tolerance, 2-month-old plants were treated with 0 (control), 300 (moderate) and 600 (high) mM NaCl for 30 days with or without exogenous application of AsA (20 mM) or distilled water. Shoot growth of unsprayed plants at moderate salinity was similar to that of controls while at high salinity growth was inhibited substantially. Sap osmolality, AsA concentrations and activities of AsA-dependant antioxidant enzymes increased with increasing salinity. Water spray resulted in some improvement in growth, indicating that the growth promotion by exogenous treatments could partly be attributed to water. However, exogenous application of AsA on plants grown under saline conditions improved growth and AsA dependent antioxidant enzymes more than the water control treatment. Our data show that AsA-dependent antioxidant enzymes play an important role in salinity tolerance of L. stocksii.

RESUMO

The influence of bracteoles on the germination response of a salt marsh annual, Atriplex prostrata , and a salt desert perennial, A. griffithii , was determined. Attached bracteoles did not inhibit germination of A. prostrata but completely inhibited germination of A. griffithii seeds. Germination of seeds of A. griffithii was also somewhat inhibited in the presence of detached bracteoles. The osmotic potential of dissolved substances in water-saturated bracteoles was -4.8 ± 0.05 MPa for A. griffithii and -2.4 ± 0.15 MPa for A. prostrata . Ash content of bracteoles on a dry weight basis was 28.7 ± 0.37% for A. prostrata and 30.0 ± 0.29% for A. griffithii . The presence of relatively high concentrations of dissolved salts in bracteoles may explain the reduced germination of A. griffithii . Germination of seeds of the perennial A. griffithii may also be inhibited mechanically by the presence of persistent bracteoles, whereas the annual A. prostrata has ephemeral bracteoles that may serve to limit germination in the autumn but are not present during the normal spring germination period. Bracteoles could affect the dispersal of seeds by water since some fruiting structures of A. griffithii and A. prostrata are able to float in 1.0% NaCl solutions for 5 and >30 d, respectively, compared with a maximum of 4 and 3 d for seeds without bracteoles. Fruiting structures of A. prostrata floated for longer over a range of salinities than did those of A. griffithii ; this may play a significant role in the dispersal of this salt marsh species.

RESUMO

The effect of L-Proline (LP) and L-Methionine (LM) doping on the various properties of KDP single crystals grown by slow evaporation solution technique has been investigated. The external morphology of the grown crystals was found to vary due to different dopants and doping concentrations. The change in powder X-ray diffraction intensity patterns due to doping shows the lattice distortion within resolution limit and confirms that there is no extra phase. Further, the same was confirmed by FT-Raman analysis. Infra red microscopic study also exhibits the effectiveness of doping in terms of varying surface morphology. Crystalline perfection of KDP crystals with LP and LM doping was examined by high-resolution X-ray diffraction. This shows very interesting features on the ability of accommodating the dopants in the crystalline matrix. Second harmonic generation efficiency was also found to be in similar fashion as of crystalline perfection. The optical transparency of doped crystals was tested.
