RESUMO

A man of 20 developed well-differentiated intraosseous osteogenic sarcoma of the femur. Clinico-roentgenologic, computed tomography and histological findings revealed a number of features uncommon for the tumor: (1) a torpid course, (2) histological appearance typical for parosteal sarcoma, (3) low malignant potential.

RESUMO

Forty-four cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma were studied. A new index for patients' survival prognosis was developed and defined as a tumor growth rate. It is a ratio of maximal tumor size and duration of disease. Eight clinical x-ray and morphological factors of prognosis were identified: duration of disease, clinical manifestations, size and roentgenologic type of tumor, pattern of tumor contours, status of the cortical layer in bone lesions, tumor growth rate and morphologic grade of malignancy. A multifactorial analysis was carried out and data were presented in tables. Values of each parameter were calculated.

RESUMO

Results of examination and treatment of 24 patients with primary neoplasms of the sternum including chondrosarcoma (18 cases), solitary plasmacytoma (5) and osteogenic sarcoma (1) were analysed. The diagnosis was based mainly on X-ray procedures and was further improved by computed tomography which allowed to precisely evaluate the extent of intrathoracic mass and its relation to adjacent mediastinal structures. Surgery was the main procedure used for the treatment of primary tumors of the sternum. Sixteen patients were operated on, and not a single case showed involvement of the mediastinum. Closure of defect was the major difficulty involved in the surgical treatment. Adequate resection of the sternum followed by autoplasty yielded good results.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma was found in 11 out of 161 patients with chondrosarcoma of the bone. The assaultive nature of the disease is illustrated by the following data: the period between the manifestation of symptoms and the first visit to the doctor was 5.9 +/- 4.3 months; metastases were detected within 20.56 +/- 6.04 months and 8 patients out of 10 died within the first 5 years. Two histological structures were observed: those of the chondrosarcoma type and hemangiopericytoma-like structures formed of small atypical cells.

RESUMO

To control the state of transplanted bone in different terms following the plastic procedure a radioisotope study by strontium-85 was performed in 29 patients. The results of scannography (in 31 cases) and radiometry (in 42 cases) were analysed. The determination of the character of strontium-85 distribution and the intensity of its accumulation in the operated extremity makes it possible to assess the graft condition and the intensity of osteogenesis a greater precision and earlier than does roentgenography. Radioisotope investigation conducted dynamically enable the prognostication of the course of the graft healing process.

RESUMO

A procedure based on multifactorial evaluation of the most important clinical and X-ray signs was suggested to differentiate between secondary bone chondrosarcoma and such benign lesions as chondroma and osteochondrous exostosis. The analysis included 100 patients with secondary bone chondrosarcoma and 36 of those with benign lesions. The study used complex parameters derived from two, three or four simple ones. The method described assured a 95% credibility of differential diagnosis.
