RESUMO

Optical encoders are widely used in accurate displacement measurement and motion-control technologies. Based on different measurement methods, optical encoders can be divided into absolute and incremental optical encoders. Absolute linear encoders are commonly used in advanced computer numerical control (CNC) machines. The subdivision error within one signal period (SDE) of the absolute linear encoder is vital to the positioning accuracy and low velocity control of CNC machines. In our paper, we study the working principle of the absolute linear encoder. We proposed two methods for reducing the SDE of the absolute linear encoder, a single-field scanning method based on the shutter-shaped Moiré fringe, as well as a method for suppressing harmonics through a phase shift of index grating. We established a SDE measuring device to determine the absolute linear encoder's SDE, which we measured using a constant-speed approach. With our proposed methods, the SDE was reduced from ±0.218 µm to ±0.135 µm, which is a decrease of 38.07%. Our fast Fourier transformation (FFT) analysis of the collected Moiré fringe signals demonstrated that the third-, fifth-, and seventh-order harmonics were effectively suppressed.

RESUMO

Accuracy becomes progressively important in the wake of development in advanced industrial equipment. A key position sensor to such a quest is the optical linear encoder. Occasionally, inappropriate mounting can cause errors greater than the accuracy grade of the optical linear encoder itself, especially for open-type optical linear encoders, where the mounting distance between the reading head and main scale must be accurately controlled. This paper analyzes the diffraction fields of a traditional scanning reticle made by amplitude grating and a newly designed combined grating; the latter shows a more stable phase in mathematical calculation and simulations. The proposed combined gratings are fabricated in a laboratory and assembled into the reading heads. The experimental results indicate that the mounting tolerance between the reading head and the main scale of the optical linear encoder can be improved.

RESUMO

The paper presents numerical and experimental investigations on a bi-directional multi-modal energy harvester which is based on a piezoelectric saw-tooth cantilever array. The harvester is composed of four piezoelectric cantilevers which are connected rigidly to each other. At each junction of the cantilevers, there are placed seismic masses which are used to reduce resonant frequencies of the cantilever array. Moreover, at the center of the cantilever array is placed a Z-shaped seismic mass, which is used to obtain an additional rotation moment during excitation of the energy harvester to this way increase the stability of output characteristics via the whole angular range. The rigid connection between cantilevers ensures the transfer of bending deformations from cantilevers which are resonant to cantilevers which are out of resonance operation mode. The design of cantilever array ensures that all piezo ceramics are affected or partly affected by bending deformations while excitation frequency changes from 10 Hz to 160 Hz. In addition, such a composition of the array ensures the multi-modal operation principle. Additionally, the proposed cantilever array is designed to respond to changes of excitation force angle in an XY plane. The numerical and experimental investigation have shown that the proposed energy harvester has four resonant frequencies at a range from 10 Hz to 160 Hz. The electrical characteristics of the harvester were investigated as well. The results of these investigations have shown that cantilever array is able to provide an average output power of 15.3 mW while excitation amplitude is 0.5 m/s2 and the angle of excitation force changes in range from 0° to 350°.

RESUMO

Optical linear encoders are widely used in manufacturing. They are accurate and have a relatively high resolution and good repeatability. However, there are a lot of side effects, which have an inevitable impact on the performance of an encoder. In general, the majority of these effects could be minimized by the appropriate design of an encoder's reading head. This paper discusses the working principle of and commonly occurring errors in optical linear encoders. Three different mechanical designs are developed and implemented in the experimental reading head of the linear encoder in order to evaluate how mechanical construction influences the displacement measurement accuracy and total performance of the encoder.

RESUMO

Linear displacement measuring systems, like optical encoders, are widely used in various precise positioning applications to form a full closed-loop control system. Thus, the performance of the machine and the quality of its technological process are highly dependent on the accuracy of the linear encoder used. Thermoelastic deformation caused by a various thermal sources and the changing ambient temperature are important factors that introduce errors in an encoder reading. This work presents an experimental realization of the real-time geometric and thermal error compensation of the optical linear encoder. The implemented compensation model is based on the approximation of the tested encoder error by a simple parametric function and calculation of a linear nature error component according to an ambient temperature variation. The calculation of a two-dimensional compensation function and the real-time correction of the investigated linear encoder position readings are realized by using a field programmable gate array (FPGA) computing platform. The results of the performed experimental research verified that the final positioning error could be reduced up to 98%.

RESUMO

With the development of industrial lasers and novel glass processing techniques, which offer high speed, quality and precision, this becomes an attractive alternative to conventional methods, such as mechanical scribing and cleaving, diamond saw and waterjet cutting, commonly used in the industry. However, the emerging techniques lack thorough validation with respect to well-established methods. To this end, we present a detailed comparison of different glass cutting methods, taking into account surface quality, side-wall roughness, residual stresses and flexural strength. In addition, samples were examined after fracture, and the flexural strength was estimated according to the quarter elliptical corner flaws, which were the main reason of glass failure. Two laser glass processing techniques were investigated - the rear-side glass processing with tightly focused nanosecond laser pulses and sub-nanosecond laser volumetric scribing with asymmetrical Bessel beam. Results were compared to mechanical scribing and breaking, diamond saw and waterjet cutting.

RESUMO

This paper represents a numerical and experimental investigation of the bidirectional piezoelectric energy harvester. The harvester can harvest energy from the vibrating base in two perpendicular directions. The introduced harvester consists of two cantilevers that are connected by a particular angle and two seismic masses. The first mass is placed at a free end of the harvester while the second mass is fixed at the joining point of the cantilevers. The piezoelectric energy harvester employs the first and the second out of plane bending modes. The numerical investigation was carried out to obtain optimal geometrical parameters and to calculate the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the harvester. The energy harvester can provide stable output power during harmonic and impact-based excitation in two directions. The results of the investigations showed that energy harvester provides a maximum output power of 16.85 µW and 15.9 4 µW when the base has harmonic vibrations in y and z directions, respectively. Maximum output of 4.059 nW/N and 3.1 nW/N in y and z directions were obtained in case of impact based excitation.

RESUMO

The emission of micrometer-sized particulate matter on an industrial scale is causing increasing environmental concern about air pollution. Numerous industries and research communities need help to reduce micrometer-sized pollutants in the atmosphere. The current research investigates the acoustic agglomeration of particulate matter through a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Acoustic agglomeration is a process that involves using acoustic waves to influence the movement of particles in the air. Acoustic agglomeration operates by facilitating particle collision and simplifying the formation of agglomerates that are later removed through filtration. This article is focused on research on acoustic pre-processing with the aim of reducing atmospheric pollution caused by toxic combustion products. The capture of fine silica particles with diameters ranging from 0.3 to 10 µm, emitted through the chimneys of industrial enterprises, can be considered a significant technological innovation. The experimental part of the current research is conducted using a newly developed experimental bench. The assembly comprises the following key components: a wind tunnel, a particle dosing device, the agglomeration camera, and a particle concentration measurement device on the edge of the bench. A loudspeaker was used to evaluate the effect of sound pressure in the frequency range of 500-3000 Hz. A comprehensive CFD study of the particles was conducted, which included analysis of the boundary layer, facilitating a better understanding of the behavior of the particles and its potential to agglomerate. An experimental study of particle agglomeration, using an acoustic field with a frequency range of 500-3000 Hz, demonstrated the effectiveness of particle agglomeration of different diameters. The efficacy of particle agglomeration is up to 80 % when the sound pressure values were 129-135 dB; the highest efficiency was found at excitation frequencies of 1500 and 3000 Hz, respectively.

RESUMO

Advanced microfabrication technologies have revolutionized the field of reflective encoders by integrating all necessary optical components and electronics into a miniature single-chip solution. Contemporary semiconductor sensors could operate at wide tolerance ranges that make them ideal for integration into compact and lightweight modular encoder kit systems. However, in order to achieve the high accuracy of the operating encoder, precise mechanical installation is still needed. To overcome this issue and exploit the full potential of modern sensors, the self-calibratable absolute modular rotary encoder is developed. The equal division average (EDA) method by combining the angular position readings from multiple optical sensors is used to simplify the installation process and ensure the high accuracy of the system. The produced prototype encoder is experimentally tested vs. the reference encoder and the measurement deviations of using different numbers and arrangements of optical sensors are determined. The obtained results show encoder ability to handle the mounting errors and minimize the initial system deviation by more than 90%.

RESUMO

Reducing the pollution of internal combustion engines is a very important problem that can be solved in various ways. However, the acoustic agglomeration method is not used in diesel engines. The study used a 1.9 TDI diesel internal combustion engine supplied with a mixture of diesel (D100) and a 90% of rapeseed methyl ester - 10% propanol fuel mixture (ROMEP). The study also changed the position of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve by adjusting the 20% EGR throughput limits and maintaining a constant engine load of 90 Nm. It should be noted that the use of biofuels produces less particulate matter, which reinforces the relevance of this study. Measurements were performed using Measurement System: The Testo 380 fine particle analyzer system was used to determine the mass concentration, and a six-channel Fluke 985 particle counter with an isokinetic sampling probe was used to determine the fractional numerical concentration of the particulates. Six particle size distribution regimes in the size range of 0.3 to 10 µm were observed, controlling the transmittance of the EGR system by 20%. The direction of the sound pressure throughout the flow and the excitation frequency 21400 Hz and 33800 Hz were also investigated and compared with the results without agglomeration. The article examines the possibility of using the developed acoustic chamber in the exhaust systems of various objects that uses diesel or various alternative fuel mixtures as fuel. The acoustic field reduces the number of particles by up to 92.5% for 10 µm and up to 44.5% for 0.3 µm at an excitation frequency of 21400 Hz.

RESUMO

Road transport plays an important role in the transport of goods and people and is important for the national economy. Damage usually excludes the means of transport from operation, which causes disruption of supply chains. One such damage is the failure of the suspension system of the vehicle or trailer, which usually occurs when the vehicle is heavily loaded. Such a defective system has been analyzed in this publication. Mathematical apparatus and finite element method (FEM) numerical simulations were used. A dangerous axle cross-section in terms of load was indicated and the maximum stresses in this area were calculated for two types of roads. On highways, the stress at the critical point was 199 MPa, and on uneven roads it increased to 304 MPa, which is comparable to the yield point. It was found that the second form of vibration may cause stresses in the damage area, but the excitation frequency would have to be quite high. The probability of such a load and failure event occurring is low under operating conditions.

RESUMO

In the paper, the results of experimental investigations of ion implanted cutting tools performance are presented. The tools, made out of Si3N4 with additives typically used for turning of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, underwent implantation with ions of yttrium (Y+) and rhenium (Re+) using the metal vapor vacuum arc method. Distribution of ions on the tool surface was measured. The cutting tools were tested in turning process with measurement of cutting forces and analysis of wear. A rather unexpected result was the increased wear of the tool after Y+ implantation with 1 × 1017 ion/cm2. It was demonstrated, however, that the tool after Y+ 2 × 1017 ion/cm2 ion implantation provided the best machining performance.

RESUMO

In the paper, a novel technique for highly dispersed pyrochlore Y2Ti2O7 is proposed. The experimental results proved that the application of microwave irradiation at a certain stage of calcination allowed synthesizing of Y2Ti2O7 in much shorter time, which ensured substantial energy savings. An increase up to 98 wt.% in the content of the preferred phase with a pyrochlore-type structure Y2Ti2O7 was obtained after 25 h of yttrium and titanium oxides calcination at a relatively low temperature of 1150 °C, while the microwave-supported process took only 9 h and provided 99 wt.% of pyrochlore. The proposed technology is suitable for industrial applications, enabling the fabrication of large industrial amounts of pyrochlore without solvent chemistry and high-energy mills. It reduced the cost of both equipment and energy and made the process more environmentally friendly. The particle size and morphology did not change significantly; therefore, the microwave-assisted method can fully replace the traditional one.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely used in biomedical research and technology, but its mechanical properties should be tuned according to the desired product specifications. Mixing ratio of base polymer to curing agent or additives enables its mechanical properties to be manipulated and fit to mechanical properties of biological tissues. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we analysed the effect of mechanical load on silk-reinforced PDMS depending on silk concentration. METHODS: We prepared cylinder-type PDMS samples with different silk concentrations and performed cyclic uniaxial compression tests with a fixed magnitude of applied strain. Next, we analysed the mechanical charascteristics of PDMS using computational modelling. RESULTS: The stress-strain data within the large-strain region of different PDMS cylinders without silk and with 1%, 5% and 10% silk concentrations was fitted to non-linear second order Mooney-Rivlin, and third-order Ogden models. The results show the equivalence of both models for investigated strain region of PDMS. On the other hand, PDMS cylinders with 10% silk concentration allowed the successful fitting of experimental data just for the second-order Mooney-Rivlin model, while all numerical probes to find an appropriate fitting parameters for third-order Ogden models were unsuccessful. CONCLUSIONS: The second-order Mooney-Rivlin model is preferable for analysing the properties of silk-reinforced PDMS over the entire measurement range.
