RESUMO

Sound rendering is the process of determining the sound propagation path from an audio source to a listener and generating 3D sound based on it. This task demands complex calculations, including trigonometric functions. This paper presents hardware-based inverse cosine function calculations using the table method and linear approximation. This approach maintains a high accuracy while limiting hardware size for suitability in sound rendering applications. Consequently, our proposed hardware-based inverse cosine calculation method is a valuable tool for achieving high efficiency and accuracy in 3D sound rendering.

RESUMO

We propose a multi-threaded algorithm that can improve the performance of geometric acoustic (GA)-based sound propagation algorithms in mobile devices. In general, sound propagation algorithms require high computational cost because they perform based on ray tracing algorithms. For this reason, it is difficult to operate sound propagation algorithms in mobile environments. To solve this problem, we processed the early reflection and late reverberation steps in parallel and verified the performance in four scenes based on eight sound sources. The experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed method was on average 1.77 times better than that of the single-threaded method, demonstrating that our algorithm can improve the performance of mobile devices.

RESUMO

AIM: Using Anderson's behavioral model, we examined the patterns and determinants associated with older adults' needs for community- and institution-based care services. METHODS: Participants included 411 community-dwelling older adults from the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans. Logistic regression analyses were performed to examine factors associated with service needs among older adults. RESULTS: The need was greatest for movement support services. Enabling factors (marital status, co-residence with children, receipt of financial assistance for medical expenses, social participation, and satisfaction with healthcare facilities) were associated with service needs. Long-term care beneficiary status, activities of daily living limitations, depressive symptoms, hypertension, and vision impairment were also significant factors. CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with physical disabilities, depressive symptoms, and limited resources for care require prioritization in support policies to promote aging in place. Both health and social care needs should be addressed in long-term care to enhance social participation among older adults.

RESUMO

A mesoporous silica hybrid functionalized with aromatic 1,2-phenyl dithiol (PT@MS NPs) was prepared in two steps such as sol-gel co-condensation of VTMS and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) using Pluronic P123 as a structure directing surfactant, and surface grafting reaction of 1,2-phenyl dithiol with vinyl groups via click-reaction. Surface area, average pore size, and mesopore volume of the produced PT@MS NPs are approximately 546 m2/g, 2.8 nm, and 0.63 cm3/g, respectively. With an adsorption quantity of 252 mg/g and a removal capacity of nearly 95% from the initial metal ion (100 mg/L of Hg2+ ions) solutions, the PT@MS NPs material showed highly selective adsorption of mercury (Hg2+) from a mixture of other competitive metal (Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Fe2+) ions. By treating the adsorbent with an acidic aqueous solution (0.1 M HCl), the produced adsorbent can be recycled and reused up to five times. As a result, the PT@MS NPs adsorbent might be used in wastewater treatment as a highly efficient and selective adsorbent for harmful Hg2+ ions.

RESUMO

The importance of the IoT is increasing in every field of life, and it especially has a significant role in improving the efficiency of the healthcare system. Its demand further increased during COVID-19 to facilitate the patient remotely from their home digitally. Every time the COVID-19 patient visited the doctor for minor complications, it increased the risk of spreading the virus and the cost for the patient. Another alarming situation arose when a patient was in a critical position and may not claim an emergency service from the nearby healthcare system, increasing the death rate. The IoT uses healthcare services to properly monitor COVID-19 patients by using the interconnected network to overcome these issues. Through the IoT, the patient is facilitated by the health care system without spreading the virus, decreasing the death ratio during COVID-19. This paper aims to discuss different applications, technologies, and challenges of the IoT healthcare system, related to COVID-19. Different databases were searched using keywords in PubMed, ResearchGate, Scopus, ACM, Springer, Elsevier, Google Scholar, etc. This paper is trying to discuss, identify, and highlight the useful applications of the IoT healthcare system to provide guidelines to the researchers, healthcare institutions, and scientists to overcomes the hazards of COVID-19 pandemics. Hence, IoT is beneficial by identifying the symptoms of COVID-19 patients and by providing better treatments that use the healthcare system efficiently. At the end of the paper, challenges and future work are discussed, along with useful suggestions through which scientists can benefit from the IoT healthcare system during COVID-19 and in a severe pandemic. The survey paper is not limited to the healthcare system and COVID-19, but it can be beneficial for future pandemics or in a worse situation.

RESUMO

The root of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) is used commercially in different products, including dietary supplements, cosmetics, and teas, but its stem part is rarely used and studied. Therefore, this study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-melanogenesis activities of the bioactive fraction of P. lobata stem and investigated whether the activated carbon decolorization technique would have an impact on its activity and chemical composition. We observed that the dichloromethane fraction of P. lobata stem (DCM-PLS) has excellent antioxidant and anti-melanin synthesis activity at a concentration of 50 µg/mL. For the investigation of the anti-melanogenesis mechanism, we evaluated the mRNA expression of tyrosinase, which was depressed by the DCM-PLS. Daidzin was identified as the main active ingredient in DCM-PLS by using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-hyphenated with tandem mass spectrometry. In addition, the activated carbon decolorization technology has no negative impact on the main components and bioactivity of DCM-PLS. DCM-PLS also did not induce any skin response in the human skin safety test. Collectively, DCM-PLS could be used as a natural type of skin-whitening agent in skin care products.

RESUMO

In wireless sensor networks (WSN), flooding increases the reliability in terms of successful transmission of a packet with higher overhead. The flooding consumes the resources of the network quickly, especially in sensor networks, mobile ad-hoc networks, and vehicular ad-hoc networks in terms of the lifetime of the node, lifetime of the network, and battery lifetime, etc. This paper aims to develop an efficient and reliable protocol by using multicasting and unicasting to overcome the issue of higher overhead due to flooding. Unicasting is used when the desired destination is at a minimum distance to avoid an extra overhead and increases the efficiency of the network in terms of overhead and energy because unicasting is favorable where the distance is minimum. Similarly, multicasting is used when the desired destination is at maximum distance and increases the network's reliability in terms of throughput. The results are implemented in the Department of Computer Science, Bacha Khan University Charsadda (BKUC), Pakistan, as well as in the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2). The results are compared with benchmark schemes such as PUMA and ERASCA, and based on the results, the performance of the proposed approach is improved in terms of overhead, throughput, and packet delivery fraction by avoiding flooding.

RESUMO

The root of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) is a widely used herbal medicine worldwide, whereas the stem of the plant is discarded or used as feed for livestock. To reuse and exploit the stem of P. lobata as a resource, we investigated its potential as a skin-whitening agent. We found that the developed, enriched P. lobata stem (PLS) extract significantly inhibited melanin production in the 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine-induced B16/F10 cells at a concentration of 50 µg/mL. To further confirm the mechanism of the antimelanogenic effect of the enriched PLS extracts, we examined the mRNA expression of tyrosinase, which was suppressed by the extracts. To standardize and implement effective quality control of the enriched PLS extracts, its major chemical constituents were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. In total, 12 constituents were identified. In silico analysis showed that the main constituents, puerarin and daidzin, had excellent binding affinities for human tyrosinase. Collectively, our results suggest that the PLS extracts could be used as anti-pigmentation agents.

RESUMO

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) is one of the major pathogens causing acute enteritis, which is characterised by vomiting and watery diarrhoea and commonly leads to high rates of mortality and morbidity in suckling piglets. Chitosan has been regarded as a promising natural disinfectant. In this study, the disinfectant effect and mammalian-cell toxicity of chitosan were evaluated against PEDV using Vero cells. A 0.01% solution of chitosan was determined to be an effective disinfectant. In addition, no evidence of toxicity was observed during the cell toxicity test; on the contrary, chitosan promoted cell proliferation. In conclusion, chitosan is a promising candidate for an effective and safe disinfectant against PEDV as well as other coronaviruses.

RESUMO

AIMS: Crosslinked hyaluronic acid (X-linked HA) is not suitable for making microneedles because of the low fluidity of X-linked HA hydrogel. Microneedles were fabricated using X-linked HA nanoparticles (X-linked HA-NPs) to utilize the sustained drug delivery capability of X-linked HA-NPs and to obtain the processability advantages of X-linked HA. METHOD: The puncture performance of a microneedle array patch (MAP) made of crosslinked hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (X-linked HA-NP-MAP) was evaluated by insertion in vitro into porcine skin. After a predetermined attachment time, the remaining height of the X-linked HA-NP-MAP was measured to determine the dissolution rate. X-linked HA-NP-MAP and free HA-MAP containing Rhodamine B isothiocyanate-dextran were administered into the back skin of mice, and the relative fluorescent intensity in the back skin was measured over time. RESULTS: The puncture performance of the X-linked HA-NP-MAP was over 90%. The diameter of redispersed X-linked HA-NPs was same as that of the premolded X-linked HA-NPs. The dissolution rate was not different from that of free HA-MAP. In an in vivo experiment, X-linked HA-NP-MAP was administered into the mouse's back skin successfully and the relative fluorescent intensity of X-linked HA-NP-MAP lasted longer than that of HA-MAP. CONCLUSION: X-linked HA-NPs provide the biocompatibility, the processability of micromolding, sustained drug release, successful penetration into the skin, and relatively short insertion time for full disintegration of NPs in the skin. X-linked HA-NP-MAP can be used for various applications that require several days of sustained drug release.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic characteristics of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease remain largely unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate incidence, prevalence, and mortality of NTM infection in a large nationwide population-based cohort in Korea. METHODS: Data of the National Health Insurance Service database, an extensive health-related database including most Korean residents, were used. Adults with a primary diagnosis of NTM as determined by International Classification of Disease-Tenth Revision coding (A31) were identified between 2003 and 2016. Incidence, prevalence, and mortality of NTM infection were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 46,194 individuals had a primary diagnosis of NTM infection. Their mean age was 55.8 years. Of these subjects, 61.1% were females. Annual age-adjusted incidence and prevalence of NTM infection tended to increase rapidly from 2003 to 2016. Age-adjusted incidence and prevalence was 17.9 and 33.3 per 100,000 population in 2016. The incidence and prevalence were higher in females and the elderly. The 5-year mortality rate in the population with NTM infection was 17.8%. The standardized mortality ratio of patients with NTM infection to the general population was 2.16 (95% confidence interval: 2.10 to 2.22). CONCLUSIONS: This large population-based study showed that the incidence and prevalence of NTM infection in Korea increased rapidly from 2003 to 2016. They were higher in women and the elderly. The mortality rate in the population with NTM infection was higher than that in the general population.

RESUMO

During hyperglycemia, the first step toward the formation of advanced glycation end products is the nonenzymatic glycation between the carbonyl group of a sugar and the primary amino group of a protein. Advanced glycation end products are then produced through more complex reactions. Reactive oxygen species derived from advanced glycation end products may play a key role in inflammation of the endothelium, leading to the complications seen in diabetes. Glycolaldehyde-induced advanced glycation end products have been reported to express proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß. This study focused on Capsosiphon fulvescens, a Capsosiphonaceae type of green algae that has shown potential as a functional food material. Pheophorbide a, an anti-glycation compound, was isolated from C. fulvescens by extraction using a mixture of ethanol and water, followed by column fractionation of the resulting extract. The compound separated from C. fulvescens was identified by means of high-performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. Pheophorbide a showed scavenging activity of the intracellular reactive oxygen species as well as monocyte adhesiveness inhibitory activity on the human myelomonocytic cell line (THP-1) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells cocultivation system. The mRNA levels of inflammation-related genes such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and interleukin-6 were significantly decreased by pheophorbide a, and advanced glycation end products-stimulated tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß were downregulated as well. These results indicate that pheophorbide a has significant reactive oxygen species-scavenging activity, monocyte adhesive inhibitory activity, and downregulatory activity of cytokines related to inflammation affecting the endothelium. Pheophorbide a could therefore be a promising candidate for modulating endothelial cell dysfunction.

RESUMO

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: To examine the association between soybean products and risk of type 2 diabetes, we measured four isoflavone biological markers--genistein, daidzein, glycitein and equol--in a nested case-control study. METHODS: The study population was composed of 693 cases (316 women and 377 men) and 698 matched controls (317 women and 381 men) within the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. The concentrations of isoflavone biomarkers were measured using HPLC-MS/MS on plasma samples that were collected at baseline. A stratified analysis was undertaken to examine the association between plasma isoflavone concentrations and risk of type 2 diabetes according to sex and equol production. Logistic regression models were used to compute ORs and 95% CIs adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: In women, compared with the lowest quartile of plasma concentration of genistein, the highest quartile exhibited a significantly decreased risk of diabetes (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.35, 0.95). When stratified by equol-producing status in women, the OR for diabetes in the highest vs the lowest quartile of genistein concentration was 0.31 (95% CI 0.16, 0.60) in equol producers, but genistein concentration was not associated with risk of diabetes in equol non-producers (p for interaction = 0.013). In men, isoflavone concentrations were not associated with risk of diabetes, regardless of equol-producing status. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: High plasma concentrations of genistein were associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes in women. This inverse association was prominent in equol-producing participants. These results suggest a beneficial effect of a high intake of soybean products on risk of type 2 diabetes in women.

RESUMO

Our case highlights the importance of follow-up. Previous meta-analysis has shown that patients with sub-centimetre nodules may have extended follow-up intervals before requiring intervention, unlike those with larger nodules exceeding 1 cm. However, referring to our case, we can see the importance of regular and dense follow-up.

RESUMO

Although Akkermansia muciniphila (Am) plays a beneficial role as a probiotic in the treatment of metabolic syndrome, the mechanisms remain elusive. We tested the hypothesis that Am extracellular vesicles (AmEVs) protect against hypertension through modulation of gene expression in the kidneys of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Extracellular vesicles purified from anaerobically cultured Am (1.0 × 108 or 1.0 × 109 particles/kg) or vehicles were injected into the tail veins of Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs) and SHRs weekly for 4 weeks. Renal cortical tissues isolated from both rat strains were analyzed by trichrome stain and RT-qPCR. AmEVs protect against the development of hypertension in SHRs without a serious adverse reaction. AmEVs increased the expression of vasocontracting Agt and At1ar as well as vasodilating At2r, Mas1 and Nos2 in the kidneys of both strains. These results indicate that AmEVs have a protective effect against hypertension without a serious adverse reaction. Therefore, it is foreseen that AmEVs may be utilized as a novel therapeutic for the treatment of hypertension.

RESUMO

Akkermansia muciniphila (Am) shows a beneficial role as a probiotic in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. However, the mechanism remains to be elucidated. We tested the hypothesis that Am extracellular vesicles (AmEVs) have a protective effect against hypertension. Extracellular vesicles purified from anaerobically cultured Am were characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and silver stain after sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). AmEVs (1.0 × 1010 log particles/L) or vehicles were added into organ baths to induce vasorelaxation. In addition, AmEVs (1.0 × 108 or 1.0 × 109 particles/kg) or vehicles were injected into the tail veins of Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) weekly for 4 weeks. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and splenocytes isolated from both rat strains were analyzed by flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, and western blot. AmEVs affected neither vascular contraction nor endothelial relaxation in thoracic aortas. Moreover, AmEVs protected against the development of hypertension in SHRs without a serious adverse reaction. Additionally, AmEVs increased the population of T regulatory (Treg) cells and tended to reduce proinflammatory cytokines. These results indicate that AmEVs have a protective effect against hypertension without a serious adverse reaction. Therefore, it is foreseen that AmEVs may be utilized as a novel therapeutic for the treatment of hypertension.

RESUMO

Unripe green apples contain condensed tannins at 10 times higher levels than ripe apples. Tannin not only has strong antioxidant activity, but also an astringent property. In this study, we investigated the effects of green apple rind (GAR) extracts in reducing facial pores and sebum secretion. Among the GAR extracts, the 70% ethanol GAR extract showed the highest antioxidant activity and tannin content. Hence, it was further fractionated with different solvents. Among these rind solvent fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction of the extract (GAR-E) showed astringent activity. Additionally, it exhibited inhibitory effects on 5-α reductase, and induced type 1 collagen and involucrin synthesis. These results suggest that GAR-E can be applied in cosmetics to reduce facial pore size and sebum secretion.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: While older adults using community care services are known to be vulnerable for depression, community care utilization (CCU) may help to improve the mental health of these elderly. To date, however, it is much less clear how CCU affects depressive symptoms in the elderly population. This study focuses on the trajectory of depressive symptoms across years of CCU among older adults in Korea. METHODS: Using the 2006-2019 Korean Welfare Panel Survey, this study is focused on elderly born in 1940 or earlier and selected 3281 persons for baseline interviews in 2006. This consisted of 35 800 person-year observations during a period of 14 years. Panel data analysis were employed to construct years of CCU. RESULTS: After controlling for covariates, linear term of years using community care was negatively associated with depressive symptoms, but a quadratic term was positively significant. The trajectory of depressive symptoms across the years of CCU follows a U-shaped curve. Older adults in the first year of using community care reported the highest level of depressive symptoms. However, a significant and steady decrease in depressive symptoms was observed during the following 9 years of CCU, which then gradually increased. The level of depressive symptoms at the 14th year of using community care remains significantly lower than the level at the outset of its utilization. CONCLUSIONS: This finding implies that CCU could be beneficial for improving mental health among older adults.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether low healthy lifestyle (HL) status was associated with alcohol and food addiction risks among college students. METHOD: The data were gathered through an online survey questionnaire from 311 college students. The students were divided into either a lower or a higher HL status group, based on HL mean score, and the major statistical method used was a binary logistic regression. RESULTS: There were significant differences in alcohol and food addiction score between the two groups. The lower HL status group showed a 3.06 times higher risk of problematic drinking and a 2.44 times higher risk of food addiction compared with the higher HL status group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest the importance of HL in the prevention of alcohol and food addiction. HL information can be used to develop health education programs aimed at preventing addiction for college students.

RESUMO

This study aimed to delineate the effect of sodium chloride on the induction of inflammatory responses and the development of hypertension in Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) and salt-resistant (SR) rats. Splenocytes were isolated from the spleens of SS and SR rats, and cultured on anti-CD3-coated plates for 5 days. The cultured splenic T-cells were challenged with a hypertonic salt solution (0, 20, or 40 mM) in the absence or presence of IL-6 (0, 20, or 60 ng/mL), TGF-ß (0, 5, or 15 ng/mL), or IL-23 (0, 10, or 30 ng/mL), and analyzed via ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence. The hypertonic salt solution potentiated IL-17A production, as well as the differentiation of Th17 cells via IL-6/TGF-ß/IL-23, exclusively in SS rats. However, it did not affect IL-10 production or the differentiation of Treg cells in any of the groups. Furthermore, it potentiated the signal of RORγt in IL-6-treated splenic T-cells from SS rats. To summarize, cultured splenic T-cells exhibited enhanced inflammatory responses on exposure to a hypertonic salt solution in SS rats only, which indicated that sodium chloride and inflammatory cytokines synergistically drove the induction of pathogenic Th17 cells and the development of hypertension in this group only.
