RESUMO

We report a series of patients with CSF3R-mutant (CSF3Rmut) atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML), chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) or other hematologic malignancies. We included 25 patients: 5 aCML and 4 CNL CSF3Rmut patients; 1 aCML, 2 CNL, and 2 myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, not otherwise specified patients without CSF3R mutation; and 11 CSF3Rmut patients with other diseases [8 acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 1 chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), 1 myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and 1 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)]. Patients with aCML or CNL were tested by Sanger sequencing and pyrosequencing to identify CSF3R T618I. Twenty-two patients underwent gene panel analysis. CSF3R mutations, mostly T618I (8/9), were found at high frequencies in both aCML and CNL patients [5/6 aCML and 4/6 CNL]. Two aCML patients in early adulthood with CSF3R T618I and biallelic or homozygous CEBPA mutations without other mutations presented with increased blasts and exhibited remission for >6 years after transplantation. The other 7 CSF3Rmut aCML or CNL patients were elderly adults who all had ASXL1 mutations and frequently presented with SEBP1 and SRSF2 mutations. Five AML patients had CSF3R exon 14 or 15 point mutations, and 6 other patients (3 AML, 1 CMML, 1 MDS, and 1 ALL) had truncating mutations, demonstrating differences in leukocyte counts and mutation status. In conclusion, CSF3R mutations were found at a higher frequency in aCML patients than in previous studies, which might reflect ethnic differences. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings and the relationship between CSF3R and CEBPA mutations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic value of the mutation types and dynamics of FLT3-ITD in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other known factors were studied. METHODS: Initial and follow-up samples from 45 AML patients with FLT3-ITD mutations were analyzed by fragment length analysis, Sanger sequencing, and next-generation sequencing. RESULTS: Some patients (13%) had multiple FLT3-ITD mutations, and many of them had acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). FLT3-ITD mutations were classified according to mutation types, including duplication-only FLT3-ITD (52%) and FLT3-ITD with duplications and insertions (dup + ins) (48%). The dup + ins FLT3-ITD variant was independently associated with poor prognosis among non-APL patients (odds ratio, 2.92) in addition to FLT3-ITD with ≥50% variant allele frequency (VAF). The VAFs of FLT3-ITD were low (median 2.2%) when detected during morphologic complete remission (CR) after conventional chemotherapy; however, in two patients treated with gilteritinib after relapse, the VAFs of FLT3-ITD were much higher (>95% and 8.1%) in the morphologic CR state. CONCLUSIONS: The type of FLT3-ITD mutation is important in prognosis, and the dup + ins type of FLT3-ITD can be an indicator of poor prognosis. In addition, the FLT3-ITD mutation status may unexpectedly not match the morphologic examination results after gilteritinib treatment.

RESUMO

Immunologic abnormalities of natural killer (NK) cells and T cells play a role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). CD161 is expressed on most of the NK cells and on some T cells. The quantities of CD161-expressing cells and expression levels of CD161 were analyzed in T cells and NK cells from patients with SLE compared with normal controls. The expression of CD161 on NK cells, NKT cells, CD4+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood from patients with inactive SLE and active SLE, and from the normal controls group were determined using flow cytometry. The frequency and expression level of CD161 in the lymphocyte subsets and its relationship with the quantity of regulatory T cells, anti-double stranded DNA antibody, and the titer of antinuclear antibody were evaluated. Both the percentages of the CD161+ subpopulation and the mean fluorescence intensities (MFIs) of CD161 in CD8+ T cells and NKT cells decreased significantly in SLE patients compared with normal controls (P < .001). The CD161 expression in CD8+ T cells and NKT cells also decreased in the anti-dsDNA (+) group (P < .05). The counts of Treg cells were lower in SLE patients and were weakly correlated with the percentage of the CD161 subpopulation (r = 0.229, P = .016) and the MFIs of CD161 expression in CD8+ T cells (r = .232, P = .014). The frequencies and levels of CD161 expression on CD8+ T cells and NKT cells were reduced in SLE patients, suggesting that an abnormality of these cells was related to the pathogenesis of SLE.

RESUMO

We investigated the changes in chromosomal abnormalities in myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) patients during long-term follow-up. In total, 28 MPN patients (22 with primary myelofibrosis and 6 with polycythemia vera) were included. Among them, 25 patients underwent serial bone marrow (BM) biopsies during disease progression, and 3 patients had cytogenetic abnormalities at initial diagnosis but lacked follow-up BM biopsies. JAK2, CALR, and MPL mutation analyses were performed. Targeted sequencing analysis was conducted in 11 patients. Among the 28 patients, 21 (75.0%) had cytogenetic abnormalities either at diagnosis (8/26) or during follow-up. The median time from the initial analysis to the appearance of additional cytogenetic abnormalities was 8.4 years. Among the chromosomal abnormalities at initial diagnosis, trisomy 8 (3/26, 11.5%) was the most frequent, followed by gain of 1q, del(20q), and del(9q) (each in 2/26). Among all chromosomal abnormalities, including those that occurred during follow-up, the most frequent was del(20q) and +1q (8/28, 28.6%), followed by del(6p) (14.3%) and trisomy 8 (10.7%). Del(20q) was more frequent in CALR-mutated patients (4/6, 66.7%) than in JAK2-mutated patients (3/19, 15.8%, P = 0.016). The presence of cytogenetic abnormalities at initial diagnosis was associated with poor prognosis. Cytogenetic evolution may provide interesting insights into the disease course.

RESUMO

Rapid screening of urinary tract infection is important to determine antibiotic treatment and reduce unnecessary urine culture. We evaluated the performance of the new flow cytometry-based UF-5000 automated urine analyzer (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan). A total of 1,430 urine samples from 1,226 patients were analyzed and compared to urine cultures to which a Previ Isola (bioMérieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) system was applied. In total, 878 of 1,430 urine cultures (61.4%) produced ≥103 CFU/ml bacterial growth (309 with Gram-negative [GN] bacteria, 517 with Gram-positive [GP] bacteria, and 52 mixed cultures), with 336 samples (23.5%) presenting ≥105 CFU/ml bacterial growth. The ≥105 CFU/ml bacterial growth was detected by a ≥71 bacteria/µl UF-5000 bacterial count with 95% sensitivity and 84% specificity. Using a cutoff of <15 bacteria/µl to determine whether or not to culture, 50.9% of samples were below the cutoff, 94.8 and 99.5% of which presented <104 and <105 CFU/ml of bacterial growth, respectively. The bacterial discrimination performance of the UF-5000 for GN bacteria was superior to that for GP bacteria, and in ≥105 CFU/ml monobacterial samples, the sensitivity and specificity for reporting GN bacteria were 91.7 and 90.0%, respectively. In summary, UF-5000 demonstrated potential utility for the rapid screening of negative bacterial cultures. However, this utility is dependent on the patient population; cutoff optimizations must be performed for specific populations. In addition, UF-5000 presented improved performance in characterizing GP and GN bacteria, although the concurrence rates were not high enough to replace routine cultures.

RESUMO

A next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based Ezplex HPV NGS kit (SML Genetree, Seoul, Korea) was used for human papillomavirus (HPV) screening. Of 885 cervical swab samples, HPV was detected in 162 samples. High-risk HPVs were detected in 82 samples, and other types of HPV were detected in 13 samples (HPV86, 71, 102, 91, and 114). At the read depth ≥ 500, NGS results exhibited 100 % agreement among repeated tests. HPV NGS results were compared with those of real-time PCR assays, Anyplex HPV28 (Seegene, Seoul, Korea) (n = 383) and Cobas HPV (Roche, Mannheim, Germany) (n = 64); concordances were 92.4 % and 95.0 %, respectively. Sanger sequencing of discordant results (n = 13) produced compatible results with those of HPV NGS. Pap smear abnormalities were detected in 31 patients (3.5 %), and 19 patients had high-risk HPV. Using HPV NGS for screening, rare HPV subtypes were detected, and quantitative values were obtained as read depth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between dietary quality based on the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI), and the prevalence of chronic conditions among middle-aged individuals (40-60 ys of age) living alone. MATERIALS/METHODS: The participants were selected (1,517 men and 2,596 women) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2018 and classified into single-person households (SPH) and multi-person households (MPH). Nutrient intake, KHEI, and the prevalence of chronic conditions were compared according to household size. The odds ratios (ORs) of chronic conditions were analyzed according to the tertile levels of KHEI by gender within each household size category. RESULTS: Men in SPH had a significantly lower total KHEI score (P < 0.0001) and a lower prevalence of obesity (OR, 0.576) than those in MPH. For men, the adjusted ORs for obesity, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia in the first tertile (T1) of KHEI scores within SPH compared with the third tertile (T3) were 4.625, 3.790, and 4.333, respectively. Moreover, the adjusted OR for hypertriglyceridemia in the T1 group compared to the T3 group within the MPH was 1.556. For women, the adjusted ORs for obesity and hypertriglyceridemia in T1 compared to T3 within the SPH were 3.223 and 7.134, respectively, and 1.573 and 1.373 for obesity and hypertension, respectively, within MPH. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy eating index was associated with a reduced risk of chronic conditions in middle-aged adults. Greater adherence to a healthy eating index could lower the risk of chronic conditions in middle-aged adults living alone.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the performance of the Alinity hq automated analyzer (Abbott Laboratories, Diagnostics Division, Hematology, Santa Clara, CA, USA). In addition, we determined the reference ranges for the red blood cell (RBC) research parameters. METHOD: The precision and stability of the instrument were measured for all complete blood count (CBC) parameters. We compared the CBC results between the Alinity hq and the DxH800 (Beckman Coulter, Miami, FL, USA) and the ADVIA 2120 (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Tarrytown, NY, USA). The white blood cell (WBC) differential results were verified by manual differential counts. We determined the reference ranges of RBC research parameters among healthy adults. RESULTS: The Alinity hq analyzer demonstrated good within-run and between-day precision for all CBC parameters. The calculated correlation coefficients (r) indicated that Alinity hq-determined values of WBC, RBC, platelet (PLT) counts, hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were in very good concordance (r>0.95) when compared with results from the DxH800 and the ADVIA 2120. The Alinity hq WBC differential counts were comparable with the manual differential counts, and the results of neutrophil counts by Alinity hq correlated well. Lymphocyte and monocyte count correlated well in samples without blasts. CONCLUSIONS: The Alinity hq presented good analytical performance and showed good correlation compared with other hematology analyzers and manual differential counts.

RESUMO

We investigate the spectral linewidth of a monolithic photonic crystal nanocavity laser. The nanocavity laser is based on a buried heterostructure cavity in which an ultra-small InGaAsP active region is embedded in an InP photonic crystal. Although it was difficult to achieve narrow linewidth operation in previously reported photonic crystal nanocavity lasers, we have successfully demonstrated a linewidth of 143.5 MHz, which is far narrower than the cold cavity linewidth and the narrowest value yet reported for nanolasers and photonic crystal lasers. The narrow linewidth is accompanied by a low power consumption and an ultrasmall footprint, thus making this particular laser especially suitable for use as an integrated multi-purpose sensor.

RESUMO

We report a novel quantum dot based laser design where a stable high-Q master laser is used to injection lock a passively mode-locked monolithic colliding pulse slave laser. Coupling between the crossed orthogonal laser cavities is achieved through a common monolithically integrated saturable absorber, which results in the locking and hence reduction of the timing jitter as well as the long-term frequency drift of the slave laser. A stable 30 GHz optical pulse train is generated with more than 10 dB reduction in the RF noise level at 20 MHz offset and close to 3 times reduction in the 10 dB average optical linewidth of the slave laser.

RESUMO

This study examined the association between dietary lifestyle and mental health outcomes among middle-aged individuals (40−60-year-olds) living alone, using the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI). The participants were selected (1334 men and 2185 women) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016−2018 and categorized into single/multi-person households. The KHEI scores were calculated based on the 24 h recall data of dietary intake. Among both sexes, single-person households had significantly lower subjective health status scores (p = 0.015 for men; p < 0.001 for women), lower EuroQol-5D index scores (p = 0.011 for men; p = 0.003 for women), and higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 index scores (p = 0.004 for men; p < 0.001 for women), compared to multi-person households. Men had a higher risk of depression in single-person households compared to multi-person households (OR, 3.5; 95% CI, 1.2−10.1). For women, the ORs for stress perception with the first tertile group of KHEI scores in single-person and multi-person households compared to the third tertile group were 3.5 (95% CI, 1.3−9.0) and 1.4 (95% CI, 1.0−1.8), respectively. The results of this study are expected to be used as baseline data to establish nutrition, healthy eating behavior, and health policies for the middle-aged living alone.

RESUMO

Lifestyle and dietary differences in urban and rural environments have different impacts on elderly health. We aimed to evaluate the nutritional intakes and metabolic risks in the urban and rural elderly. We analyzed 3018 elderly individuals (1358 men, 1660 women) who were aged 65 years and older using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2013-2016). Anthropometric data, blood pressure, and blood profiles were collected using health examinations. Daily dietary intakes were analyzed by the 24-h dietary recall method. Rural elderly women had significantly higher triglycerides (TG) levels and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels than urban elderly women (p = 0.014, p = 0.005). The rural elderly had higher carbohydrate intake and percentage of carbohydrate energy intake and lower intakes of fat, vitamin A, vitamin B2, and vitamin C and percentage of fat energy intake than the urban elderly for both men and women (p < 0.05). The odds of high TG and low HDL-cholesterol were 1.66 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-2.23) and 1.33 (95% CI 1.01-1.77), respectively, in elderly women living in rural areas compared to their urban counterparts, after adjusting for confounding factors. Therefore, nutritional intervention might be needed to improve the nutritional status of the elderly in rural areas and to manage low HDL-cholesterol in rural women.

RESUMO

This study explores the association between soft-drink intake and obesity, depression, and subjective health status in male and female adults. Soft-drink consumption has become a serious public health issue worldwide. Participants of this study were selected (n = 3086) from the respondents in the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016 and divided into the non-soft-drink group (men, 502; women, 1117) and the soft-drink group (men, 684; women, 783). Soft-drink intake data were obtained, using a validated quantitative food frequency questionnaire and the 24 h dietary recall. Total energy intake and fat density were significantly higher, but the nutrient densities of carbohydrate, total dietary fiber, and micronutrients were significantly lower in the soft-drink group than in the non-soft-drink group. In men, soft-drink intake was found to be significantly associated with a lower risk of depression. Conversely, in women, soft-drink intake was found to be significantly associated with the higher risks of depression, obesity, and poor subjective health status. Therefore, less frequent soft-drink intake may prevent obesity and depression in Korean women.

RESUMO

A computer-based nutritional analysis program can help to identify the nutritional status of people and provide information for nutritional counseling, nutrition education, diet planning, and menu development. Although computer-based nutritional analysis has been conducted since the 1960s in developed countries, in developing countries nutritional analysis programs either do not exist or need improving. This study tests two analysis programs developed by different countries to compare the nutrition status data calculated by two different analysts to highlight the importance of developing an appropriate nutrition analysis tool. An interview-administered 24-h dietary recall method was conducted with 100 adults aged 40∼59 years in Vientiane, Laos. Analysts from Korea and Laos, respectively, calculated nutrient intake using the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University CALculation (INMUCAL) nutritional analysis program (Bangkok, Thailand). Nutrient intake was also compared using two different analysis tools, INMUCAL and computer aided nutrition-al analysis program (CAN-Pro) 5.0 software (Seoul, Korea). The average nutrient intake calculated by the different analysts using INMUCAL were not significantly different. Furthermore, macronutrient intake calculated by CAN-Pro 5.0 and INMUCAL did not significantly differ, aside for intake of iron, thiamin, and vitamin C. Nutrient intake calculated by one analysis program differed from those calculated by a different program in Laos. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an appropriate nutritional analysis program that reflects the diet behavior and food culture in Laos and to understand the nutritional status of Laotians.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of septic arthritis (SA) relies on synovial analysis and conventional culture. But, these methods lack of sensitivity and culture is time consuming to establish a definite diagnosis. This study evaluated a new multiplex PCR assay which entailed screening PCR for Gram typing and identification PCR for species identification using two primer mixes. METHODS: A total of 80 synovial fluid samples from patients with suspected SA were collected. Culture, multiplex PCR, and 16S rRNA gene PCR were performed. RESULTS: The analytical sensitivity of multiplex PCR assay was 10(1) CFU/ml for each type of bacteria. There was no cross-reactivity with common bacterial pathogens. Bacteria were detected in 20, 25, and 26 of 80 samples for culture, multiplex PCR, and 16S rRNA gene PCR, respectively. Nineteen (95%) of 20 culture-positive samples and 6 (10%) of 60 culture-negative samples were positive for the multiplex PCR. Five of six samples which were positive only from multiplex PCR were also positive in 16S rRNA gene PCR. The multiplex PCR showed 2 false-negative in 27 true-positive samples but no false-positive. The sensitivity and specificity of the multiplex PCR were 92.6 and 100%, and the agreement with culture and 16S rRNA gene PCR were 91.3 and 96.3%, respectively. The time to detection for multiplex PCR was a maximum of 6 hr. CONCLUSION: This multiplex PCR assay offers high sensitivity and improved detection speed relative to culture. The appropriate combination of this new multiplex PCR assay with culture may contribute to the accurate and rapid diagnosis of SA.

RESUMO

We aimed to evaluate the intake of minerals (calcium, phosphorous, sodium, and potassium) in the urban and rural elderly and explore the adequacy of intake and food sources for each mineral using nationwide big data. The study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) between 2013 and 2016. We analyzed 5292 elderly individuals that were aged 65 years and older (2271 men, 3021 women). Daily calcium, phosphorous, sodium, and potassium intake, and they were analyzed using the 24-h dietary recall method. Additionally, the adequacy of intake and food sources for each mineral was analyzed. Blood triglyceride level was significantly higher in rural elderly than in urban elderly. The intake of calcium and potassium per 1000 kcal of energy intake was significantly lower in the rural elderly, and the proportion of participants with calcium intake below the Estimated Average Requirement was significantly higher in the rural elderly than in the urban elderly. The intake of calcium, phosphorous, and potassium in the rural elderly was lower than that in the urban elderly. These results can be used as basic data when making social and environmental policies for the health of the elderly and when providing targeted dietary education for the management of chronic diseases for the elderly.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have separately reported the contributions of dietary factors to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its markers, including blood pressure (BP) and lipid profile. This study systematically reviewed the current evidence on this issue in the Korean population. METHODS: Sixty-two studies from PubMed and Embase were included in this meta-analysis. We performed a random-effects model to analyze pooled odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the consumption of 14 food items, three macro- and eight micro-nutrients, two dietary patterns, and three dietary indices. RESULTS: An analysis of pooled effect sizes from at least four individual study populations showed significant associations between coffee consumption and CVD (OR/HR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.52-0.97) and elevated/high triglycerides (TG) (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.78-0.90), sugar-sweetened beverage intake and elevated BP (OR/HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.09-1.33), and milk and dairy intake and elevated/high TG and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR/HR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.76-0.89 for both). Carbohydrate consumption and the low-carbohydrate-diet score were consistently related to an approximately 25% risk reduction for elevated TG and low HDL-C. A lower risk of elevated total cholesterol, but not low-density lipoprotein, was additionally observed for those with a higher low-carbohydrate-diet score. A healthy dietary pattern was only associated with a reduced risk of elevated TG in the Korea National Cancer Screenee Cohort (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98). CONCLUSION: This study showed that milk and dairy and coffee had protective effects for CVD and its risk factors, such as BP and lipid profile, while sugar-sweetened beverages exerted harmful effects.

RESUMO

Statins and omega-3 supplementation have shown potential benefits in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD), but their comparative effects on mortality outcomes, in addition to primary and secondary prevention and mixed population, have not been investigated. This study aimed to examine the effect of statins and omega-3 supplementation and indirectly compare the effects of statin use and omega-3 fatty acids on all-cause mortality and CVD death. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from meta-analyses published until December 2019. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to indirectly compare the effect of statin use versus omega-3 supplementation in a frequentist network meta-analysis. In total, 55 RCTs were included in the final analysis. Compared with placebo, statins were significantly associated with a decreased the risk of all-cause mortality (RR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.86-0.94) and CVD death (RR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.80-0.92), while omega-3 supplementation showed a borderline effect on all-cause mortality (RR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.94-1.01) but were significantly associated with a reduced risk of CVD death (RR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.87-0.98) in the meta-analysis. The network meta-analysis found that all-cause mortality was significantly different between statin use and omega-3 supplementation for overall population (RR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.85-0.98), but borderline for primary prevention and mixed population and nonsignificant for secondary prevention. Furthermore, there were borderline differences between statin use and omega-3 supplementation in CVD death in the total population (RR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.82-1.04) and primary prevention (RR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.68-1.05), but nonsignificant differences in secondary prevention (RR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.66-1.43) and mixed population (RR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.75-1.14). To summarize, statin use might be associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality than omega-3 supplementation. Future direct comparisons between statin use and omega-3 supplementation are required to confirm the findings.

RESUMO

The immunization schedule for the Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine in Korea is a two-dose primary series at 12-24 months of age, followed by booster doses 12 months after the second dose and at the ages of 6 and 12 years. Although the number of JE cases has markedly decreased after the universal vaccination program, JE predominantly occurs in adults. The aim of this study was to assess the age-specific prevalence of the JE-neutralizing antibody (NTAb) among adolescents and adults in Korea. A total of 1603 specimens were collected from a healthy Korean population above 15 years old in five provinces. The JE-NTAb titers were measured with the pseudotyped virus assay and considered to be positive at ≥ 1:50. The seropositivity of JE-NTAb was the highest in the 15-29 years category (>95%) and gradually began to decrease in the age group of 30-44 years (89.42%). The lowest and second lowest JE-NTAb seropositive rates were observed among those aged 70 years or older (59.77%) and those aged 55-59 years (75.24%), respectively. Subjects from Seoul exhibited the highest JE-NTAb titer in all age groups compared to other provinces. In conclusion, the JE-NTAb seropositive rates and titers have maintained appropriate levels in the general Korean population. We propose that adult immunization and boosters at 12 years of age against JE are not strongly recommended in Korea.

RESUMO

The spectral dependence of the linewidth enhancement factor above threshold is experimentally observed from a quantum dot Fabry-Pérot semiconductor laser. The linewidth enhancement factor is found to be reduced when the quantum dot laser operates approximately 10 nm offset to either side of the gain peak. It becomes significantly reduced on the anti-Stokes side as compared to the Stokes side. It is also found that the temporal duration of the optical pulses generated from quantum dot mode-locked lasers is shorter when the laser operates away from the gain peak. In addition, less linear chirp is impressed on the pulse train generated from the anti-Stokes side whereas the pulses generated from the gain peak and Stokes side possess a large linear chirp. These experimental results imply that enhanced performance characteristics of quantum dot lasers can be achieved by operating on the anti-Stokes side, approximately 10 nm away from the gain peak.
