BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is generally used to treat complex coronary artery disease. Treatment success is affected by neointimal hyperplasia (NIH) of graft and anastomotic sites. Although sirolimus and rosuvastatin individually inhibit NIH progression, the efficacy of combination treatment remains unknown. METHODS: We identified cross-targets associated with CABG, sirolimus, and rosuvastatin by using databases including DisGeNET and GeneCards. GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were conducted using R studio, and target proteins were mapped in PPI networks using Metascape and Cytoscape. For in vivo validation, we established a balloon-injured rabbit model by inducing NIH and applied a localized perivascular drug delivery device containing sirolimus and rosuvastatin. The outcomes were evaluated at 1, 2, and 4 weeks post-surgery. RESULTS: We identified 115 shared targets between sirolimus and CABG among databases, 23 between rosuvastatin and CABG, and 96 among all three. TNF, AKT1, and MMP9 were identified as shared targets. Network pharmacology predicted the stages of NIH progression and the corresponding signaling pathways linked to sirolimus (acute stage, IL6/STAT3 signaling) and rosuvastatin (chronic stage, Akt/MMP9 signaling). In vivo experiments demonstrated that the combination of sirolimus and rosuvastatin significantly suppressed NIH progression. This combination treatment also markedly decreased the expression of inflammation and Akt signaling pathway-related proteins, which was consistent with the predictions from network pharmacology analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Sirolimus and rosuvastatin inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokine production during the acute stage and regulated Akt/mTOR/NF-κB/STAT3 signaling in the chronic stage of NIH progression. These potential synergistic mechanisms may optimize treatment strategies to improve long-term patency after CABG.

The decoupled 8 × 2 transceiver array has been shown to achieve a mean B1 + of 11.7 uT with a coefficient of variation of ~11% over the intracranial brain volume for 7-T MR imaging. However, this array may be thought to give lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and higher g-factors for parallel imaging compared with a radio frequency (RF) receive-only coil due to the latter's higher coil count and use of coil overlap to reduce the mutual impedance. Nonetheless, because the transceiver's highly decoupled design (pertinent for transmission) should also be constructive for reception, we measured the noise correlation, g-factors, and SNR for the decoupled transceiver in comparison with a commercial reference coil. We found that although the transceiver has half the number of receive elements in comparison with the reference coil (16 vs. 32), comparable g-factors and SNR over the head were obtained. From five subjects, the transceiver versus reference coil SNR was 65 ± 10 versus 67 ± 15. The mean noise correlation for all coil pairs was 10% ± 5% and 12% ± 9% (transceiver and reference coil, respectively). As changes in load impedance may alter the S parameters, we also examined the performance of the transceiver with tuned and matched (TM) versus untuned and unmatched (UTM) conditions on five subjects. We found that the noise correlation and SNR are robust to load variation; a noise correlation of 10% ± 5% and 10% ± 6% was determined with TM versus UTM conditions (SNRUTM/SNRTM = 0.97 ± 0.08). Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the array in human brain using T2-weighted turbo spin echo imaging, finding excellent SNR performance in both caudal and rostral brain regions.

Hydride ions (H-) in solvents are chemically active anions with strong electron-donating ability and are used as reducing agents in organic chemistry. Here, we evaluate the energy level of 1s-electrons in H- accommodated in solid lanthanum hydrides, LaHx (2 ≤ x ≤ 3), by photoemission (ultraviolet photoelectron and photoelectron yield spectroscopies) measurements and density functional theory calculations. We show that a very shallow valance band maximum with an ionization potential of 3.8 eV is attained in LaH3 and that the primary cause is attributed to the small electronegativity of hydrogen and the significant bonding-antibonding interaction between neighboring H-s with a close separation originating from the H-stuffed fluorite-related structure. These results encourage the challenge for p-type conduction in hydride semiconductors and provide a clue to the chemical understanding of polyhydride superconductors.

Blue-emitting Cs3Cu2I5 has attracted attention owing to its near-unity PL quantum yield and applications in DUV photodetectors and scintillators. Its PL properties originate from the unique local structure around the luminescent center, the [Cu2I5]3- polyhedron iodocuprate anion consisting of the edge-shared CuI3 triangle and the CuI4 tetrahedron dimer, which is isolated by Cs+ ions. We found that solid-state reactions between CsI and CuI occur near room temperature (RT) to form Cs3Cu2I5 and/or CsCu2I3 phases. High-quality thin films of these phases were obtained by the sequential deposition of CuI and CsI by thermal evaporation. We elucidated that the formation of interstitial Cu+ and the antisite of I- at the Cs+ site in the CsI crystal through Cu+ and I- diffusion results in the RT synthesis of Cs3Cu2I5. The unique structure formation of the luminescent center was revealed using a model based on the low packing density of the CsCl-type crystal structure, similar sizes of Cs+ and I- ions, and the high diffusivity of Cu+. The self-aligned patterning of the luminous regions on thin films was demonstrated.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) has been routinely applied in the liver transplantation setting to block HBV reinfection of grafts. However, new monoclonal anti-HBV surface antibodies have been developed to replace HBIG. The epitopes of such monoclonal antibodies may affect the emergence of escape variants and deserve study. APPROACH AND RESULTS: The conformational epitope of sLenvervimab, a surrogate form of Lenvervimab, which is a monoclonal anti-HBsAg antibody currently under phase 3 trial, was investigated by selecting escape mutants from a human liver chimeric mouse. HBV-infected chimeric mice treated with sLenvervimab monotherapy showed an initial decline in circulating HBsAg levels, followed by a quick rebound in 1 month. Sequencing of circulating or liver HBV DNA revealed emerging variants, with replacement of amino acid E164 or T140, two residues widely separated in HBsAg. E164 HBV variants strongly resisted sLenvervimab neutralization in cell culture infection, and the T140 variant moderately resisted sLenvervimab neutralization. Natural HBV variants with amino-acid replacements adjacent to E164 were constructed and examined for sLenvervimab neutralization effects. Variants with K160 replacement also resisted neutralization. These data revealed the conformational epitope of sLenvervimab. CONCLUSIONS: Selection of antibody-escape HBV variants in human chimeric mice works efficiently. Analysis of such emerging variants helps to identify anchor amino-acid residues of the conformational epitope that are difficult to discover by conventional approaches.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is more complicated than other photodermatoses. However, the relationship between the clinical severity of CAD and the offending photocontact or contact allergens or both, and the correlations of CAD immunopathogenesis with the immunoregulatory molecules involved in adaptive immunity are yet to be investigated. METHODS: We performed phototesting with broad-spectrum ultraviolet (UV) B, UVA, and visible light to establish the presence of photosensitivity in 121 patients with CAD, together with photopatch and contact patch testing. Nine patients with CAD were selected according to their clinical severity score for CAD (CSS-CAD), and triple direct immunofluorescence analysis was performed with paraffin-embedded skin biopsy samples. RESULTS: As CSS-CAD was closely correlated with the multiplicity of photo(contact) allergens, particularly photoallergens, three or more photoallergens were detected in the severe CAD group (52.5%); less in the moderate group (32.8%); and only one in the mild group (14.8%; P = .025). In the groups showing greater severity of disease, the absolute numbers of IFN-γ+ , IL-17+ , CD4+, CD8+, common-γ chain receptor (common-γCR)+ , and CD69+ tissue-resident memory cells increased on average; there was also an increase in the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio, with the more severely affected groups. However, the levels of TNF-α+ and FoxP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells and the mean IL-17/IFN-γ cell ratio decreased in the more severely affected CSS-CAD subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the clinical analysis and immunopathogenic results, avoidance of excessive sun exposure, and topical and systemic blocking agents for photo(contact) allergens are recommended. Additionally, conventional immunomodulators and emerging agents including JAK-STAT inhibitors may be administered for CAD treatment in the future.

With the rapid development of virtual reality (VR) technology and the market growth of social network services (SNS), VR-based SNS have been actively developed, in which 3D avatars interact with each other on behalf of the users. To provide the users with more immersive experiences in a metaverse, facial recognition technologies that can reproduce the user's facial gestures on their personal avatar are required. However, it is generally difficult to employ traditional camera-based facial tracking technology to recognize the facial expressions of VR users because a large portion of the user's face is occluded by a VR head-mounted display (HMD). To address this issue, attempts have been made to recognize users' facial expressions based on facial electromyogram (fEMG) recorded around the eyes. fEMG-based facial expression recognition (FER) technology requires only tiny electrodes that can be readily embedded in the HMD pad that is in contact with the user's facial skin. Additionally, electrodes recording fEMG signals can simultaneously acquire electrooculogram (EOG) signals, which can be used to track the user's eyeball movements and detect eye blinks. In this study, we implemented an fEMG- and EOG-based FER system using ten electrodes arranged around the eyes, assuming a commercial VR HMD device. Our FER system could continuously capture various facial motions, including five different lip motions and two different eyebrow motions, from fEMG signals. Unlike previous fEMG-based FER systems that simply classified discrete expressions, with the proposed FER system, natural facial expressions could be continuously projected on the 3D avatar face using machine-learning-based regression with a new concept named the virtual blend shape weight, making it unnecessary to simultaneously record fEMG and camera images for each user. An EOG-based eye tracking system was also implemented for the detection of eye blinks and eye gaze directions using the same electrodes. These two technologies were simultaneously employed to implement a real-time facial motion capture system, which could successfully replicate the user's facial expressions on a realistic avatar face in real time. To the best of our knowledge, the concurrent use of fEMG and EOG for facial motion capture has not been reported before.

We investigated the role of a sirolimus-embedded silk microneedle (MN) wrap as an external vascular device for drug delivery efficacy, inhibition of neointimal hyperplasia, and vascular remodeling. Using dogs, a vein graft model was developed to interpose the carotid or femoral artery with the jugular or femoral vein. The control group contained four dogs with only interposed grafts; the intervention group contained four dogs with vein grafts in which sirolimus-embedded silk-MN wraps were applied. After 12-weeks post-implantation, 15 vein grafts in each group were explanted and analyzed. Vein grafts applied with the rhodamine B-embedded silk-MN wrap showed far higher fluorescent signals than those without the wrap. The diameter of vein grafts in the intervention group decreased or remained stable without dilatation; however, it increased in the control group. The intervention group had femoral vein grafts with a significantly lower mean neointima-to-media ratio, and had vein grafts with an intima layer showing a significantly lower collagen density ratio than the control group. In conclusion, sirolimus-embedded silk-MN wrap in a vein graft model successfully delivered the drug to the intimal layer of the vein grafts. It prevented vein graft dilatation, avoiding shear stress and decreasing wall tension, and it inhibited neointimal hyperplasia.

Lead is the most widely used X-ray-shielding material, but it is heavy (density ≈ 11.34 g/cm3) and toxic. Therefore, the replacement of Pb with lightweight, ecofriendly materials would be beneficial, and such materials would have applications in medicine, electronics, and aerospace engineering. However, the shielding ability of Pb-free materials is significantly lower than that of Pb itself. To maximize the radiation attenuation of non-Pb-based shielding materials, a high-attenuation cross-section, normal to the incoming X-ray direction, must be achieved. In this study, we developed efficient X-ray-shielding materials composed of sulfated cerium oxide (S-CeO2) and bismuth halides. Crucially, the materials are lightweight and mechanically flexible because of the absence of heavy metals (for example, Pb and W). Further, by pre-forming the doped metal oxide as a porous sponge matrix, and then incorporating the bismuth halides into the porous matrix, uniform, compact, and intimate composites with a high-attenuation cross-section were achieved. Owing to the synergetic effect of the doped metal oxide and bismuth halides, the resultant thin (approximately 3 mm) and lightweight (0.85 g·cm-3) composite achieved an excellent X-ray-shielding rate of approximately 92% at 60 kV, one of the highest values reported for non-heavy-metal shielding materials.

Recently, an "interlayer" has been often adopted in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). The term "interlayer" infers that the layer function is not clear, but it improves electroluminescence (EL) performance. In this respect, it is of interest to determine the exact role of the interlayer and how it works in PeLEDs. In this study, the interlayer is determined to play a crucial role in suppressing the chemical reaction between the metal oxide and hybrid perovskite layers. Nevertheless, the use of an interlayer, a wide gap insulator, does not guarantee the best PeLED performance because it hinders charge injection into the emission layer. Here, a method is proposed that does not apply an "interlayer" but enables simultaneous attainment of high EL performance and outstanding device stability. 18-crown 6-ether (18C6) additive (2.5 mg mL-1 ) is found to fully suppress the chemical reaction between the metal oxide and hybrid perovskite layers. With the 18C6 additive, an 82-fold longer device lifetime and very low operating voltage (3.2 V at 10 000 cd m-2 ) are demonstrated in a PeLED.

AIMS: Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) fibrosis score (NFS) are the two most widely used non-invasive tools for screening of advanced fibrosis in subjects with NAFLD. Since metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been proposed as a new category of fatty liver disease, we aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of FIB-4 and NFS in subjects with MAFLD and in various subgroups. METHODS: This study was designed as cross-sectional study. Data from 6775 subjects who underwent magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and abdominal ultrasonography at the same time during a health check-up at 13 various health check-up centers were retrospectively reviewed. Advanced fibrosis was defined as an MRE value of ≥3.6 kPa. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) of FIB-4 and NFS for diagnosing advanced fibrosis were similar in subjects with MAFLD. However, the AUROC of NFS was lower than that of FIB-4 in the diabetic subgroup of MAFLD (0.809 in FIB-4 vs. 0.717 in NFS, p = 0.002). The performances of both FIB-4 and NFS were poor in the subgroup of MAFLD with significant alcohol intake. CONCLUSIONS: The overall diagnostic performance of FIB-4 and NFS for diagnosing advanced fibrosis did not differ among subjects with MAFLD. However, the performance of NFS was lower in the diabetes subgroup of MAFLD. The diagnostic performance of FIB-4 was better for fibrosis in various subgroups of MAFLD.

BACKGROUND: Endotension is one of the detrimental complications after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and surgical management has been considered as standard of care. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the findings, and outcomes of such surgical intervention. The aim of this study was to investigate intraoperative findings and outcomes of surgical treatment for endotension after EVAR. METHODS: Between January 2005 and October 2018, of the 708 patients who underwent EVAR for aneurysm aortic aneurysm; 12 patients (mean age of 76.1; range 66-88) who underwent open repair for endotension were retrospectively analyzed. The anatomical characteristics of the aorta and surgical findings were reviewed. The rates of early and late procedural complications, and overall mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: The median interval between the EVAR and surgical conversion was 45.9 months (range 17.1-46.9). Three of the twelve patients underwent emergency surgery due to aneurysm rupture. The median aneurysm sac size, the proximal neck diameter, and the proximal neck length before EVAR were 64 mm, 23.5 mm, and 30.5 mm, respectively, that changed before open repair to 93.5 mm (P = 0.02), 25 mm (P = 0.011), and 23 mm (P = 0.003), respectively. In four of the twelve patients, radiographically undetected endoleak was identified during surgery to be Type Ia, Ib, II, and III, respectively. The rates of early and late procedural complications, and overall mortality were 8.3%, 8.3% and 8.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with endotension have a risk of delayed endoleak and aneurysm rupture; secondary intervention should be performed in such cases to prevent fatal complications. Surgical treatment appears to be a curative treatment for endotension with favorable outcomes. In addition, the possibility of an undetected endoleak should be considered as a potential cause of endotension.

The spread of the Dengue virus over the world, as well as multiple outbreaks of different serotypes, has resulted in a large number of deaths and a medical emergency, as no viable medications to treat Dengue virus patients have yet been found. In this paper, we provide an in silico virtual screening and molecular dynamics-based analysis to uncover efficient Dengue infection inhibitors. Based on a Google search and literature mining, a large phytochemical library was generated and employed as ligand molecules. In this investigation, the protein target NS2B/NS3 from Dengue was employed, and around 27 compounds were evaluated in a docking study. Phellodendroside (-63 kcal/mole), quercimeritrin (-59.5 kcal/mole), and quercetin-7-O-rutinoside (-54.1 kcal/mole) were chosen based on their binding free energy in MM-GBSA. The tested compounds generated numerous interactions at Lys74, Asn152, and Gln167 residues in the active regions of NS2B/NS3, which is needed for the protein's inhibition. As a result, the stable mode of docked complexes is defined by various descriptors from molecular dynamics simulations, such as RMSD, SASA, Rg, RMSF, and hydrogen bond. The pharmacological properties of the compounds were also investigated, and no toxicity was found in computational ADMET properties calculations. As a result, this computational analysis may aid fellow researchers in developing innovative Dengue virus inhibitors.

Among inorganic clathrates, the inner cavity space rarely affects the electronic structure of the framework. We report that the anti-ReO3-type compound Na3N has a metallic nature irrespective of the stoichiometric chemical composition of simple representative elements and that this unusual nature originates from the collapse of the bandgap owing to the presence of a crystallographic cavity. We synthesized Na3N by the plasma-assisted nitridation of alkali metals, and diffuse reflectance measurements indicated a metallic nature. The introduction of nitrogen into the Na metal induced the formation of both the Na+ ion and the crystallographic cavity. The former increased the density of the lattice of Na+ ions to form a wide Na 3s conduction band. The latter interacted with the Na 3s band to enhance the bandwidth, resulting in the collapse of the bandgap. Na3N is a unique nitride, which possesses an electronically active cavity space.

BACKGROUND: Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is the formation of an alternative circulatory system by aggressive tumor cells. The characteristics of VM and its underlying mechanism in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remain unclear. This study aims to determine the relationship between VM in OSCC tissues and clinical outcomes and to investigate the biological role of SOX7 in VM in OSCC cells. METHODS: CD31/PAS staining was performed to evaluate VM in OSCC tissue. The relationships between VM and clinicopathological variables, and VM and SOX7 levels were analyzed. The correlation between SOX7 levels and cancer cohorts was investigated using in silico analysis. VM formation assay was performed to observe VM in vitro. To investigate the role of SOX7 in VM formation, SOX7 was transiently over-expressed in SCC-9 cells. VM-modulating genes were identified by Western blotting. RESULTS: We found a positive correlation between VM and lymph node metastasis and patient survival in OSCC (p = 0.003). In silico analysis from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus database showed that down-regulation of SOX7 expression was significantly correlated with OSCC patients (p = 0.0187) and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.0017). We also found that the presence of VM in OSCC tissue was inversely associated with SOX7 expression (p = 0.020). We observed that overexpression of SOX7 impaired VM formation by reducing the expression of VE-cadherin, thereby inhibiting cell migration and invasion. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that SOX7 plays an important role in the regulation of VM formation and may inhibit OSCC metastasis.

The neighborhood effect averaging problem (NEAP) is a major methodological problem that might affect the accuracy of assessments of individual exposure to mobility-dependent environmental factors (e.g., air/noise pollution, green/blue spaces, or healthy food environments). Focusing on outdoor ground-level ozone as a major air pollutant, this paper examines the NEAP in the evaluation of sociodemographic disparities in people's air pollution exposures in Los Angeles using one-day activity-travel diary data of 3790 individuals. It addresses two questions: (1) How does the NEAP affect the evaluation of sociodemographic disparities in people's air pollution exposures? (2) Which social groups with high residence-based exposures do not experience neighborhood effect averaging? The results of our spatial regression models indicate that assessments of sociodemographic disparities in people's outdoor ground-level ozone exposures might be erroneous when people's daily mobility is ignored because of the different manifestations of neighborhood effect averaging for different social/racial groups. The results of our spatial autologistic regression model reveal that non-workers (e.g., the unemployed, homemakers, the retired, and students) do not experience downward averaging: they have significantly lower odds of experiencing downward averaging that could have attenuated their high exposures experienced in their residential neighborhoods while traveling to other neighborhoods (thus, being doubly disadvantaged). Therefore, to avoid erroneous conclusions in environmental inequality research and ineffective public policies, it would be critical to take the NEAP into account in future studies of sociodemographic disparities related to mobility-dependent environmental factors.

South Korea has been evaluated as a country that is responding well to COVID-19. The Government of the Republic of Korea discloses where, when, and by which means of transportation people confirmed to have the virus have visited. Although disclosure of movement has contributed to flattening the curve and providing timely medical service, concerns about privacy infringement have also been raised. This article determines what factors influence privacy risk tolerance, looking specifically at threat severity, vulnerability, response efficacy, and response cost. We also provide implications for the preparation of better countermeasures for the government to implement.

Luteolin (LT), present in most plants, has potent anti-inflammatory properties both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, some of its derivatives, such as luteolin-7-O-glucoside, also exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying luteolin-3'-O-phosphate (LTP)-mediated immune regulation are not fully understood. In this paper, we compared the anti-inflammatory properties of LT and LTP and analyzed their molecular mechanisms of action; we obtained LTP via the biorenovation of LT. We investigated the anti-inflammatory activities of LT and LTP in macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. We confirmed from previously reported literature that LT inhibits the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, as well as the expression of inducible NO synthetase and cyclooxygenase-2. In addition, expressions of inflammatory genes and mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1ß, were suppressed. LTP showed anti-inflammatory activity similar to LT, but better anti-inflammatory activity in all the experiments, while also inhibiting mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-kappa B more effectively than LT. At a concentration of 10 µM, LTP showed differences of 2.1 to 44.5% in the activity compared to LT; it also showed higher anti-inflammatory activity. Our findings suggest that LTP has stronger anti-inflammatory activity than LT.

This paper examines changes in people's mobility over a 7-month period (from March 1st to September 30th, 2020) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. using longitudinal models and county-level mobility data obtained from people's anonymized mobile phone signals. It differentiates two distinct waves of the study period: Wave 1 (March-June) and Wave 2 (June-September). It also analyzes the relationships of these mobility changes with various social, spatial, policy, and political factors. The results indicate that mobility changes in Wave 1 have a V-shaped trend: people's mobility first declined at the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (March-April) but quickly recovered to the pre-pandemic mobility levels from April to June. The rates of mobility changes during this period are significantly associated with most of our key variables, including political partisanship, poverty level, and the strictness of mobility restriction policies. For Wave 2, there was very little mobility decline despite the existence of mobility restriction policies and the COVID-19 pandemic becoming more severe. Our findings suggest that restricting people's mobility to control the pandemic may be effective only for a short period, especially in liberal democratic societies. Further, since poor people (who are mostly essential workers) kept traveling during the pandemic, health authorities should pay special attention to these people by implementing policies to mitigate their high COVID-19 exposure risk.

Efficient electron transfer between a cathode and an active organic layer is one key to realizing high-performance organic devices, which require electron injection/transport materials with very low work functions. We developed two wide-bandgap amorphous (a-) oxide semiconductors, a-calcium aluminate electride (a-C12A7:e) and a-zinc silicate (a-ZSO). A-ZSO exhibits a low work function of 3.5 eV and high electron mobility of 1 cm2/(V · s); furthermore, it also forms an ohmic contact with not only conventional cathode materials but also anode materials. A-C12A7:e has an exceptionally low work function of 3.0 eV and is used to enhance the electron injection property from a-ZSO to an emission layer. The inverted electron-only and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices fabricated with these two materials exhibit excellent performance compared with the normal type with LiF/Al. This approach provides a solution to the problem of fabricating oxide thin-film transistor-driven OLEDs with both large size and high stability.
