RESUMO
Abscission is the shedding of plant organs in response to developmental and environmental cues. Abscission involves cell separation between two neighboring cell types, residuum cells (RECs) and secession cells (SECs) in the floral abscission zone (AZ) in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the regulatory mechanisms behind the spatial determination that governs cell separation are largely unknown. The class I KNOTTED-like homeobox (KNOX) transcription factor BREVIPEDICELLUS (BP) negatively regulates AZ cell size and number in Arabidopsis. To identify new players participating in abscission, we performed a genetic screen by activation tagging a weak complementation line of bp-3. We identified the mutant ebp1 (enhancer of BP1) displaying delayed floral organ abscission. The ebp1 mutant showed a concaved surface in SECs and abnormally stacked cells on the top of RECs, in contrast to the precisely separated surface in the wild-type. Molecular and histological analyses revealed that the transcriptional programming during cell differentiation in the AZ is compromised in ebp1. The SECs of ebp1 have acquired REC-like properties, including cuticle formation and superoxide production. We show that SEPARATION AFFECTING RNA-BINDING PROTEIN1 (SARP1) is upregulated in ebp1 and plays a role in the establishment of the cell separation layer during floral organ abscission in Arabidopsis.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) has emerged as a promising desalination technology and recently promoted the development of multichannel membrane capacitive deionization (MC-MCDI). In MC-MCDI, the independent control of multiflow channels, including the feed and electrolyte channels, enables the optimization of electrode operation in various modes, such as concentration gradients and reverse voltage discharge, facilitating semicontinuous operation. Moreover, the integration of redox couples into MC-MCDI has led to advancements in redox-mediated desalination. Specifically, the introduction of redox-active species helps enhance the ion removal efficiency and reduce energy consumption during desalination. This systematic approach, combining principles from CDI and electrodialysis, results in more sustainable and efficient desalination. These advancements have contributed to improved desalination performance and practical feasibility, rendering MC-MCDI an increasingly attractive option for addressing water scarcity challenges. Despite the considerable interest in and potential of this process, there is currently no comprehensive review available that covers the operational features and applications of MC-MCDI. Therefore, this Review provides an overview of recent research progress, focusing on the unique cell configuration, vital operation principles, and potential advantages over conventional CDI. Additionally, innovative applications of MC-MCDI are discussed. The Review concludes with insights into future research directions, potential opportunities in industrial desalination technology, and the fundamental and practical challenges for successful implementation.
RESUMO
Enhancing the piezoresistivity of polymer-derived silicon oxycarbide ceramics (SiOCPDC ) is of great interest in the advancement of highly sensitive pressure/load sensor technology for use in harsh and extreme working conditions. However, a facile, low cost, and scalable approach to fabricate highly piezoresistive SiOCPDC below 1400 °C still remains a great challenge. Here, the fabrication and enhancement of piezoresistive properties of SiOCPDC reinforced with ß-SiC nanopowders (SiCNP ) through masked stereolithography-based 3D-printing and subsequent pyrolysis at 1100 °C are demonstrated. The presence of free carbon in SiCNP augments high piezoresistivity in the fabricated SiCNP -SiOCPDC composites even at lower pyrolysis temperatures. A gauge factor (GF) in the range of 4385-5630 and 6129-8987 with 0.25 and 0.50 wt% of SiCNP , respectively is demonstrated, for an applied pressure range of 0.5-5 MPa at ambient working conditions. The reported GF is significantly higher compared to those of any existing SiOCPDC materials. This rapid and facile fabrication route with significantly enhanced piezoresistive properties makes the 3D-printed SiCNP -SiOCPDC composite a promising high-performance material for the detection of pressure/load in demanding applications. Also, the overall robustness in mechanical properties and load-bearing capability ensures its long-term stability and makes it suitable for challenging and severe environment applications.

RESUMO
Various real-space methods optimized on massive parallel computers have been developed for efficient large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations of materials and biomolecules. The iterative diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix is a computational bottleneck in real-space DFT calculations. Despite the development of various iterative eigensolvers, the absence of efficient real-space preconditioners has hindered their overall efficiency. An efficient preconditioner must satisfy two conditions: appropriate acceleration of the convergence of the iterative process and inexpensive computation. This study proposed a Gaussian-approximated Poisson preconditioner (GAPP) that satisfied both conditions and was suitable for real-space methods. A low computational cost was realized through the Gaussian approximation of a Poisson Green's function. Fast convergence was achieved through the proper determination of Gaussian coefficients to fit the Coulomb energies. The performance of GAPP was evaluated for several molecular and extended systems, and it showed the highest efficiency among the existing preconditioners adopted in real-space codes.
RESUMO
Commensal bacteria are believed to have important roles in human health. The mechanisms by which they affect mammalian physiology remain poorly understood, but bacterial metabolites are likely to be key components of host interactions. Here we use bioinformatics and synthetic biology to mine the human microbiota for N-acyl amides that interact with G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). We found that N-acyl amide synthase genes are enriched in gastrointestinal bacteria and the lipids that they encode interact with GPCRs that regulate gastrointestinal tract physiology. Mouse and cell-based models demonstrate that commensal GPR119 agonists regulate metabolic hormones and glucose homeostasis as efficiently as human ligands, although future studies are needed to define their potential physiological role in humans. Our results suggest that chemical mimicry of eukaryotic signalling molecules may be common among commensal bacteria and that manipulation of microbiota genes encoding metabolites that elicit host cellular responses represents a possible small-molecule therapeutic modality (microbiome-biosynthetic gene therapy).

Two new pyrrolosesquiterpenes, glaciapyrroles D (1) and E (2) were discovered along with the previously reported glaciapyrrole A (3) from Streptomyces sp. GGS53 strain isolated from deep-sea sediment. This study elucidated the planar structures of 1 and 2 using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), ultraviolet (UV), and infrared (IR) spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of the glaciapyrroles were determined by Mosher's method, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Under 366 nm UV irradiation, the glaciapyrroles were systematically converted to the corresponding photoglaciapyrroles (4-6) via photoisomerization, resulting in the diversification of the glaciapyrrole family compounds. The transformation of the glaciapyrrole Z to E isomers occurred in a 1:1 ratio, based on virtual validation of the photoisomerization of these olefinic compounds by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis. Finally, when encapsulated in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles, glaciapyrrole E and photoglaciapyrrole E displayed significant inhibitory activity against influenza A virus. This is the first report of antiviral effects from glaciapyrrole family compounds, whose biological functions have only been subjected to limited studies so far.

Background and Objectives:Asplenium incisum, a natural plant, is known to possess numerous pharmacological and biochemical properties. However, the inhibitory effect of A. incisum against Porphyromonas gingivalis and other factors related to periodontal disease have not yet been demonstrated. This study aimed to investigate the potential of A. incisum extract as a phytotherapeutic candidate for improving periodontal diseases by assessing its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-osteoclastogenic activities. Materials and Methods: The inhibition of proliferation of P. gingivalis by A. incisum and the sustainability of its antibacterial activity were evaluated in this study. The production of inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)) and nitric oxide (NO) from lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells was assessed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. To identify the anti-osteoclastogenic activity, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and TRAP activity analyses were performed on bone marrow macrophages. Results: The proliferation of P. gingivalis was significantly inhibited by A. incisum (p < 0.001), and the antibacterial activity was sustained for up to 3 days. A. incisum showed anti-inflammatory activities by significantly decreasing the release of TNF-α, IL-6 (p < 0.05), and NO (p < 0.01). In addition, A. incisum significantly suppressed TRAP-positive cells and TRAP activity (at 30 µg/mL, p < 0.01) without causing any cytotoxicity (p > 0.05). Conclusions:A. incisum showed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-osteoclastogenic activities, suggesting it has strong therapeutic potential against periodontal diseases.

Various standoff sensing techniques employing optical spectroscopy have been developed to address challenges in safely identifying trace amounts of explosives at a distance. A flexible anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) microcantilever and a high-power quantum cascade laser utilized as the infrared (IR) source are used for standoff IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy to detect explosive residues on a metal surface. Standoff sensing of trinitrotoluene (TNT) is demonstrated by exploiting the high thermomechanical sensitivity of a bimetallic AAO microcantilever. Moreover, sputtering gold onto the fabricated AAO nanowells generates a strong scattering and absorption of IR light in the wavelength range of 5.18 µm to 5.85 µm resulting in enhanced nanoplasmonic heating. Utilizing the IR absorption enhancement in this wavelength range, the plasmonic AAO cantilever could detect TNT molecules 7 times better than could the bimetallic AAO cantilever.
RESUMO
We demonstrate the on-chip monitoring of far-field patterns in a silicon-based optical phased array (OPA) using a planar diffractor and traveling-wave photodetectors (PDs) integrated at the end of the radiator array. To reproduce the diffraction patterns within a silicon slab, the planar diffractor is designed with a diffraction region surrounded by an absorptive boundary and seven discrete outlet waveguides. Each outlet waveguide is linked to the photon-assisted tunneling PD which has a silicon p-n junction and is operated under a reverse bias to detect a sub-bandgap wavelength, 1.3 µm. With the 1×16 OPA and seven detectors, the positions of the main beams aligned to specific directions in the free space were clearly monitored.
RESUMO
We demonstrate longitudinal beam-steering with a 1×16 silicon optical phased array (OPA) using a monochromatic light source and thermo-optic control of the refractive index in the grating radiator region. The refractive index is controlled by forming a series of n-i-n heaters, placing i-regions in each radiator of the OPA. When the biased voltage in the heaters is increased, the refractive index of the radiator region is increased by the thermo-optic effect, and the longitudinal radiation angle is changed according to the Bragg condition. The transversal beam-steering is accomplished by phase control with the phase shifters, which are devised with a p-i-n diode using the electro-optic effect. With these electro-optic p-i-n phase shifters and n-i-n thermo-optic radiators, we achieve a relatively wide 2D beam-steering in a range of 10.0°/45.4° in the longitudinal/transversal directions with a 1.55 µm light source. The tuning efficiency is 0.016°/mW in the longitudinal beam-steering.
RESUMO
Friction reduction is an important issue for proper functioning of nano-/micro-electromechanical systems (N-/MEMS) due to their large surface to volume ratios and the inability of traditional liquid lubricants to effectively lubricate sliding contacts. One efficient technique to achieve substantially lowered friction at the nanoscale, as well as superlubricity in some instances, was investigated with the coupling of ultrasonic actuation of the sliding contact in an atomic force microscope (AFM). Despite the successful application of ultrasonic AFM methods in achieving mechanical property measurements and nanoscale subsurface imaging of soft and hard materials, the mechanism of friction reduction in the microscopic contact and the influence of the ultrasonic parameters on friction reduction are still elusive. In this study, the effects of excitation amplitude, applied normal force, tip radius, and humidity on friction have been investigated in detail. Ultrasonic force microscopy (UFM) results are compared against those collected with conventional contact-AFM (C-AFM) and indicate that a reduction in the adhesive interaction between the tip and sample, as well as a reduction in the shear strength can explain the mechanisms of the friction reduction in UFM method. This study opens up a new door for the control of friction and wear, which is critical for the increased lifetime of AFM probes, N-/MEMS devices and would potentially bridge the gap between nanotribology and other fields, such as nanomachining, nanolithography and biomaterials imaging.

Chemical investigation of a halophilic actinomycete strain belonging to the genus Nocardiopsis inhabiting a hypersaline saltern led to the discovery of new 18-membered macrolides with nitrile functionality, borrelidins C-E (1-3), along with a previously reported borrelidin (4). The planar structures of borrelidins C-E, which are new members of the rare borrelidin class of antibiotics, were elucidated by NMR, mass, IR, and UV spectroscopic analyses. The configurations of borrelidines C-E were determined by the interpretation of ROESY NMR spectra, J-based configuration analysis, a modified Mosher's method, and CD spectroscopic analysis. Borrelidins C and D displayed inhibitory activity, particularly against the Gram-negative pathogen Salmonella enterica, and moderate cytotoxicity against the SNU638 and K562 carcinoma cell lines.

A lead zirconate titanate (PZT;Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3) layer embedded infrared (IR) detector decorated with wavelength-selective plasmonic crystals has been investigated for high-performance non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy. A plasmonic IR detector with an enhanced IR absorption band has been designed based on numerical simulations, fabricated by conventional microfabrication techniques, and characterized with a broadly tunable quantum cascade laser. The enhanced responsivity of the plasmonic IR detector at specific wavelength band has improved the performance of NDIR spectroscopy and pushed the limit of detection (LOD) by an order of magnitude. In this paper, a 13-fold enhancement in the LOD of a methane gas sensing using NDIR spectroscopy is demonstrated with the plasmonic IR detector.
RESUMO
Recently, two types of TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) (blue- and black-colored TiO2 NTAs), which are easily fabricated by electrochemical self-doping, have gained much attention due particularly to their enhanced capacitive and oxidant-generating properties. These enhanced electrochemical properties mean that they have potential as basic materials for energy and environmental applications, such as in supercapacitors and anodes for water treatment. However, the understanding of the effect of the doping level of these TiO2 NTAs on their electrochemical properties is limited because there is no direct comparison or relevant discussion of their respective electrochemical properties under the same conditions, despite the similar surface characteristics of the TiO2 NTAs obtained by comparable electrochemical doping. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the doping level of blue and black TiO2 NTAs on their electrochemical properties, including the capacitive and oxidant-generating properties. Although no significant difference in their surface properties was found using SEM, XRD and XPS, the black TiO2 NTA revealed a slightly higher doping level than the blue TiO2 NTA, which is caused by the order of the electrochemical self-doping and annealing conditions. With the different doping levels of the two TiO2 NTAs, the black TiO2 NTA showed a higher areal capacitance, indicating good capacitive properties, and better service life in oxidant-generation than that of the blue TiO2 NTA. The blue TiO2 NTA exhibited a larger oxygen evolution overpotential and higher chlorine evolution efficiency than that of the black TiO2 NTA. We report that the new knowledge on blue and black TiO2 NTAs from this study can contribute to the further development of supercapacitors and oxidant-generating anodes for water treatment.
RESUMO
New metabolites, xiamycins C-E (1-3), were isolated from a Streptomyces. sp (#HK18) culture inhabiting the topsoil in a Korean solar saltern. The planar structures of the xiamycins C-E were elucidated as carbazole-bearing indolosesquiterpenoids using a combined analysis of NMR, MS, UV, and IR spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of these new compounds were determined by analyses of NOESY and ECD data. When the xiamycins were tested for inhibitory activity on porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), xiamycin D (2) showed the strongest inhibitory effect on PEDV replication (EC50 = 0.93 µM) with low cytotoxicity (CC50 = 56.03 µM), thus displaying a high selective index (60.31). Quantitative real-time PCR data revealed the inhibitory effect of 2 on genes encoding essential structural proteins (GP6 nucleocapsid, GP2 spike, and GP5 membrane) for PEDV replication in a dose-dependent manner. The antiviral activity of xiamycin D (2) was also supported by both Western blotting of the GP2 spike and GP6 nucleocapsid protein synthesis of PEDV. Therefore, xiamycin D shows the potential of indolosesquiterpenoids as new and promising chemical skeletons against PEDV-related viruses.

An electronic nose (e-nose) for identification and quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vapor mixtures was developed using nanopore-enhanced opto-calorimetric spectroscopy. Opto-calorimetric spectroscopy based on specific molecular vibrational transitions in the mid infrared (IR) "molecular fingerprint" regime allows highly selective detection of VOCs vapor mixtures. Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) microcantilevers, fabricated using a two-step anodization and simple photolithography process, were utilized as highly sensitive thermomechanical sensors for opto-calorimetric signal transduction. The AAO microcantilevers were optimized by fine-tuning AAO nanopore diameter in order to enhance their thermomechanical sensitivity as well as their surface area. The thermomechanical sensitivity of a bilayer AAO microcantilever with a 60 nm pore diameter was approximately 1 µm/K, which is far superior to that of a bilayer plain silicon (Si) microcantilever. The adsorbed molecules of VOCs mixtures on the AAO microcantilever were fully recognized and quantified by variations of peak positions and amplitudes in the opto-calorimetric IR spectra as well as by shifts in the resonance frequency of the AAO microcantilever with the adsorbed molecules. Furthermore, identification of complex organic compounds with a real industrial sample was demonstrated by this e-nose system.
