RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of olfactory stimulation on both cognitive and behavioral symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases. The criteria for selection of participants in the study included neurodegenerative disease, interventions using olfactory stimulation, and measured cognitive or psychological symptoms. 5301 articles were identified, excluding duplicate papers. Seven original articles were selected according to the full article review and eligibility criteria. The final selected studies were all quasi-experimental studies and were published between 2002 and 2015. To assess the risk of bias, we used Cochrane Collaboration's tool, Non-randomized Studies-of Interventions (ROBINS-I). Although olfactory stimulation reported various effects on behavioral and psychological symptoms, it is still in its infancy. We propose standardization of olfactory stimulation and olfactory training. In patients with neurodegenerative diseases, it is necessary to consider the symptoms and severity of olfactory stimulation.

Successful online learning depends on the supported learner's attitude, motivation, and self-efficacy, along with their ability to use the flexibility and convenience of digital technology. As information and communications technology is introduced in healthcare, eHealth literacy (eHL) is becoming increasingly essential in nursing education. This study aimed to identify the eHL levels and the factors affecting eHL among nursing students. A survey was conducted among 205 nursing students from two colleges in Korea. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the factors associated with the eHL of nursing students were examined using multiple regression analysis. The eHL of nursing students, measured using the eHealth literacy scale, was found to be higher than in previous studies. Factors affecting eHL of nursing students were academic level, digital literacy toward information and communications technology for learning, and self-efficacy for online education. These factors accounted for 38.8% of the variability in eHL among nursing students. In order to improve the eHL of nursing students, nursing education should consider a multidimensional approach toward developing digital literacy and self-efficacy among them.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand the lived experience of nurses who care for people undergoing maintenance haemodialysis. BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research regarding the lived experience of nurses caring for people undergoing chronic haemodialysis, in spite of an increased number of nurses and patients. DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was conducted. METHODS: Fourteen nurses working at two haemodialysis centres in Korea were selected via purposive sampling and participated in in-depth interviews. Data were collected from October 2013-January 2014 and analysed using the phenomenological research method. RESULTS: Four themes were extracted for haemodialysis nurses' caring experience: feelings of pity for clients scheduled for haemodialysis treatment; continuous effort to establish good relationships with clients; feeling comfortable with clients, as though they were family or friends; and reflecting on their own lives through the lives of clients. CONCLUSIONS: Haemodialysis nurses experienced therapeutic relationships while taking care of clients undergoing haemodialysis; they also experienced maturation through reflection on their lives as nurses and human beings. An understanding of nurses' experiences in caring for people undergoing haemodialysis should be the basis of practice, education and nursing research in haemodialysis. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study could be helpful in enabling nursing students and/or nurses to understand the experience of caring and its meaning with respect to clients undergoing haemodialysis.

The study aims to understand the lived self-care experiences of patients who have undergone long-term haemodialysis. The study adopts a qualitative phenomenological design. Data were collected for six months, from 1 July to 31 December 2020. Out of 90 outpatients in a haemodialysis clinic at a university hospital in Seoul, Korea, 11 patients who had received haemodialysis for more than 10 years were purposefully selected, and 9 of them took part in in-depth interviews. The main research question was, 'What was the experience of surviving long-term haemodialysis?' The study revealed four main themes surrounding the topic of self-care: (A) the desire to keep living despite challenges, (B) creating one's own dietary principles, (C) moving one's body with the remaining strength, and (D) moving toward independence. In the long-term self-care of haemodialysis patients, they shared personal observations on their disease and treatment process and their struggles to try to manage their own physical and emotional self-care. By exploring the experience of long-term haemodialysis, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of their perceptions, emotions, and motivations. With this information, healthcare professionals can develop interventions and support strategies that are tailored to the specific needs of haemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: eHealth literacy (eHL) is considered an important competency among healthcare providers in healthcare systems, especially following the introduction of information and communication technologies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the relationship and direction of factors affecting nursing students' eHL in an online learning environment. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: Three nursing colleges located in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 259 nursing students aged 18-29 years who lived in the Seoul metropolitan area. METHODS: Self-reported data on variables including attitudes toward online learning, digital literacy, self-efficacy, and eHL, were collected and analyzed using an independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance. The mediating effects were verified through the bootstrapping method using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. RESULTS: The results indicated that although attitudes toward online learning affected digital literacy, they did not directly influence eHL. Additionally, digital literacy and self-efficacy were also found to be associated with eHL and mediate the relationship between online learning attitudes and eHL. CONCLUSIONS: As online nursing education rapidly becomes commonplace due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attitudes toward online learning, digital literacy, and self-efficacy must be improved to enhance eHL.

Debriefing and flipped learning have been determined to be useful strategies for nursing education. Recently, it has been reported that applying debriefing and flipped learning together was helpful for educational outcomes. The objective of this study was to compare learning motivation and reflective thinking before and after debriefing during nursing practicums that applied flipped learning. We implemented a quasi-experimental procedure in the form of a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design (1 September to 22 October 2021). The participants comprised 63 nursing students in South Korea (33 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group). Each group took part in a nursing practice class, wherein the experimental group engaged in debriefing using flipped learning, while the control group engaged only in flipped learning. We then examined academic motivation and reflective thinking in both the groups, and found that reflective thinking was significantly higher in the experimental group (53.67 ± 5.71) versus the control group (50.80 ± 4.69) (t = 2.165, p = 0.034). However, there were no differences in learning motivation between the two groups (t = 1.864, p = 0.067). In sum, this study confirmed the benefits of this new teaching approach, in which debriefing and flipped learning were integrated and incorporated into a nursing practice class. Given our promising results, this approach can be applied in various cases to strengthen the clinical practice skills of nursing students.

AIM: Recent evidence has revealed an association between neurodegenerative disorders and olfactory dysfunction. However, whether olfactory training can improve cognitive impairment in patients with dementia requires further study. The present study aimed to resolve this by developing an intensive olfactory training (IOT) protocol and assessing its impact on each of the cognitive domains in patients with dementia. METHODS: Patients were prospectively recruited between June 2020 and September 2020. Baseline evaluations included demographic data, olfactory function test, depression scale and detailed cognitive function tests. Thirty-four patients in the experimental group underwent IOT twice a day with a 40-odor set for 15 days, while 31 individuals in the control group received conservative management. Follow-up evaluations using the depression scale and detailed cognitive function tests were performed after IOT. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were not different between the two groups. The IOT group showed significant improvements in depression, attention, memory and language functions, but not global cognition, frontal executive, or visuospatial functions compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: This study shows the ability of IOT to alleviate depression and improve some cognitive functions in patients with dementia. These results suggest that IOT may be an effective non-pharmacological approach for improving the symptoms of dementia. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 5-11.

Early detection is important for delaying or preventing cognitive impairment. Since olfactory dysfunction and depression are common symptoms of cognitive dysfunction, they may serve as measurable risk indicators. This study was designed to identify the relationship between olfaction, depression, and each domain of cognitive function in elderly dementia patients in South Korea. Study participants were 108 patients who visited the outpatient clinic between March and September 2019. More significant impairment of olfactory function was found in those with mild (7.48 ± 1.28) or moderate (7.37 ± 2.22) test scores of the Expanded Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale than in those with questionable scores (20.58 ± 6.18). The language domain of cognitive function, age, and education level showed 39.2% explanatory power for olfactory function (F = 5.591, p < 0.001). It is expected that assessment of olfactory function in elderly people can lead to the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of dementia. Furthermore, it is important for future studies to confirm the relationship between each domain of cognitive function and olfactory function according to the type of dementia and to establish criteria for screening dementia in order to utilize olfactory function as a clinical marker.

Olfactory function is an emerging topic of research in the fields of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. We aimed to confirm the association between olfactory function and cognitive impairment by assessing the olfactory function of older persons with cognitive impairment and identify whether olfactory function is associated with cognitive impairment. For this study, we recruited 117 older people aged ≥65 years with cognitive impairments from a public hospital in Korea. We used the Korean version of the expanded clinical dementia rating scale to evaluate participants' cognitive impairments, and the University of Pennsylvania's smell identification test to assess their olfactory function. Our results indicate a significant negative correlation between olfactory function and all domains of cognitive impairment (memory, orientation, judgement and problem-solving, community affairs, home and hobbies, and personal care). In addition, olfactory function was a factor associated with cognitive impairment in older persons. Therefore, we expect that our results to provide useful data for the development of interventions using olfactory stimulation to improve cognitive function in older persons with cognitive impairment.

Illness perception, formed in social-cultural contexts, is the driving force for health behavior. Age difference can affect health outcomes due to its association with socioeconomic status. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between illness perception, self-care management, and clinical outcomes according to the age group in hemodialysis patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) and Patient Activation Measure (PAM) 13, clinical outcomes, such as serum phosphorus, potassium, hemoglobin, and albumin were investigated in maintenance hemodialysis patients. Illness perception, self-care management, and clinical outcomes in 189 hemodialysis patients were different according to age group. Younger hemodialysis patients had the lowest illness perception and the highest serum phosphorus. Illness perception was associated with self-care management and clinical outcomes. After the adjusted age, the association between illness perception and self-care management and the association between illness perception and phosphorus were reduced, while the association between illness perception and potassium increased. Uncontrolled phosphorus in younger hemodialysis patients can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications and mortality. To improve self-care management and clinical outcomes in hemodialysis patients, reconstruction, or expansion of illness perception needs to be differentiated according to age group.
