RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of CAD-CAM diamond bur deterioration on surface roughness (Ra) and maximum failure load (Lf) of Y-TZP-based ceramic (YZ) substructures (SB) veneered with a feldspathic porcelain. METHODS: Two sets of burs (B1 and B2) were used to fabricate 30 YZ SB each in a CAD/CAM system (Cerec InLab). The SB were identified (1-30) according to the milling sequence (MS). SEM images of the burs were recorded before milling, and after milling 15 and 30 SB. The SB Ra was measured. All SB were veneered, cemented onto a fiber reinforced epoxy resin die, and loaded to failure. Specimens from B1 group were cyclic fatigued (106 cycles) before loading to failure. Fractographic analysis was performed. Data were statistically analyzed using Student's t-test, Weibull analysis, Pearson's correlation and ANOVA (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The mean Ra value of B1 specimens was statistically greater than B2. Weibull modulus of B1 and B2 were statistically similar. The correlation between MS and Lf was not statistically significant for the groups. MS and Ra had significant correlation for both groups (B1: r= -0.514, P= 0.015; B2: r= -0.462, P= 0.03). Although the visual aspect (SEM) of the burs was similar after 30 millings, the mean Ra values were significantly different after 27 millings for B1 and 24 millings for B2.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the influence of ceramic thickness and shade on the Knoop hardness and dynamic elastic modulus of a dual-cured resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six ceramic shades (Bleaching, A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B3) and two ceramic thicknesses (1 mm, 3 mm) were evaluated. Disk specimens (diameter: 7 mm; thickness: 2 mm) of the resin cement were light cured under a ceramic block. Light-cured specimens without the ceramic block at distances of 1 and 3 mm were also produced. The Knoop hardness number (KHN), density, and dynamic Young's moduli were determined. Statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA and a Tukey B rank order test (p = 0.05). RESULTS: The bleaching 1-mm-thick group exhibited significantly higher dynamic Young's modulus. Lower dynamic Young's moduli were observed for the 3-mm-thick ceramic groups compared to bleaching 3-mm-thick group, and no difference was found among the other 3-mm groups. For the KHN, when A3.5 3-mm-thick was used, the KHN was significantly lower than bleaching and A1 1-mm-thick ceramic; however, no difference was exhibited between the thicknesses of the same shade. CONCLUSIONS: The dual-cured resin cement studied irradiated through the 1-mm-thick ceramic with the lightest shade (bleaching ceramic) exhibited a better elastic modulus, and there was no effect in KHN of the resin cement when light cured under different ceramic shades and thicknesses (1 and 3 mm), except when the A3.5 3-mm-thick ceramic was used. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Variolink II irradiated through ceramic with the lowest chroma exhibited the highest elastic modulus; therefore, the light activation method might not be the same for all clinical situations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of heat treatment (HT) procedures of a pre-hydrolyzed silane on bond strength of resin cement to a feldspathic ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ceramic and composite blocks (N = 30) were divided into six groups (n = 5) and subjected to the following conditioning procedures: G1: 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HF) for 20 s + silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE) + resin cement (Panavia F2.0, Kuraray) (control); G2: HF (20 s) + silane + heat treatment in furnace (HTF) (100°C, 2 min) + resin cement; G3: silane + HTF + resin cement; G4- HF (20 s) + silane + heat treatment with hot air (HTA) (50 ± 5°C for 1 min) + resin cement; G5: silane + HTA + resin cement; G6: silane + resin cement. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min). After debonding, the substrate and adherent surfaces were analyzed using a stereomicroscope and SEM to categorize the failure types. The data were statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). RESULTS: The control group (G1) showed no pre-test failures and presented significantly higher mean MTBS (16.01 ± 1.12 MPa) than did other groups (2.63 ± 1.05 to 12.55 ± 1.52 MPa) (p = 0.0001). In the groups where HF was not used, HTF (G3: 12.55 ± 1.52 MPa) showed significantly higher MTBS than did HTA (G5: 2.63 ± 1.05 MPa) (p < 0.05). All failure types were mixed, ie, adhesive between the resin cement and ceramic accompanied by cohesive failure in the cement. CONCLUSION: Heat treatment procedures for the pre-hydrolyzed silane either in a furnace or with the application of hot air cannot replace the use of HF gel for the adhesion of resin cement to feldspathic ceramic. Yet when mean bond strengths and incidence of pre-test failures are considered, furnace heat treatment delivered the second best results after the control group, being considerably better than hot air application.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of ceramic cemented to dentin varying the resin cement and ceramic shades. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two VITA VM7 ceramic shades (Base Dentine 0M1 and Base Dentine 5M3) were used. A spectrophotometer was used to determine the percentage translucency of ceramic (thickness: 2.5 mm). For the MTBS test, 80 molar dentin surfaces were etched and an adhesive was applied. Forty blocks (7.2 x 7.2 x 2.5 mm) of each ceramic shade were produced and the ceramic surface was etched (10% hydrofluoric acid) for 60 s, followed by the application of silane and resin cement (A3 yellow and transparent). The blocks were cemented to dentin using either A3 or transparent cement. Specimens were photoactivated for 20 s or 40 s, stored in distilled water (37°C/24 h), and sectioned. Eight experimental groups were obtained (n = 10). Specimens were tested for MTSB using a universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests (α <= 0.05). RESULTS: The percentage translucency of 0M1 and 5M3 ceramics were 10.06 (± 0.25)% and 1.34 (± 0.02)%, respectively. The lowest MTBS was observed for the ceramic shade 5M3. For the 0M1 ceramic, the A3 yellow cement that was photocured for 20 s exhibited the lowest MTBS, while the transparent cement that was photocured for 40 s presented the highest MTBS. CONCLUSIONS: For the 2.5-mm-thick 5M3 ceramic restorations, the MTBS of ceramic cemented to dentin significantly increased. The dual-curing cement Variolink II photocured for 40 s is not recommended for cementing the Base Dentine 5M3 feldspathic ceramic to dentin.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of a new intraoral paralleling device for creating proximal guiding planes for removable partial dental prostheses. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty gypsum casts were divided into two groups in which the proximal surfaces of selected teeth were prepared using either a surveying device (Group 1) or the new ParalAB paralleling device (Group 2). In each cast guiding planes were prepared on the distal surface of the maxillary left canine (A), on the mesial and distal surfaces of the maxillary left second molar (B and C), and on the distal surface of the maxillary right canine (D). Each prepared surface formed an angle related to the occlusal plane that was measured five times and averaged by one operator using a tridimensional coordinate machine. RESULTS: The mean guiding plane angles (+/- standard deviation) for the prepared surfaces were A=91.82 degrees (+/-0.48 degrees ), B=90.47 degrees (+/-0.47 degrees ), C=90.21 degrees (+/-0.76 degrees ), and D=90.50 degrees (+/-0.73 degrees ) for the dental surveyor (Group 1) and A=92.18 degrees (+/-0.87 degrees ), B=90.90 degrees (+/-0.85 degrees ), C=90.07 degrees (+/-0.92 degrees ), and D=90.66 degrees (+/-0.76 degrees ) for the ParalAB paralleling device (Group 2). A two-way ANOVA, Tukey's, and Levène's tests (at p<0.05) revealed statistically significant differences among surfaces prepared by both groups and that one surface (A in Group 2) was more parallel to the path of insertion than the other surfaces. CONCLUSIONS: The ParalAB device was able to prepare parallel surfaces and despite significant difference between groups, the ParalAB presented a small deviation from absolute parallelism and can be considered a valid method to transfer guide plans in the fabrication of removable partial dentures. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The preparation of suitable guiding planes on abutment teeth during the fabrication of removable partial dentures is dependent on the ability of the operator and requires considerable chair time. When multiple teeth are involved, achieving parallelism between abutment surfaces can be technically challenging, especially in posterior regions of the mouth. The ParalAB prototype intraoral paralleling device can aid the clinician during the preparation of accurate guiding planes with a minimum degree of occlusal divergence.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of denture base resin reinforced with glass fibers and with a laboratorial composite resin. Group G1 was formed with specimens made of acrylic resin. Group G2 was formed with the same acrylic resin but reinforced with a glass-fiber system, and G3 was reinforced with the composite resin. A flexural strength test was performed in all groups (n=10). The mean value for the G1 was 86.70 MPa +/- 6.48, for G2 it was 86.60 MPa +/- 15.01 and for G3 it was 108.90 + 11.03. The addition of glass fiber did not increase the flexural strength however the use of a resin-based composite produced significant reinforcement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the composition, flexural strength and fatigue behaviour of lithium disilicate ceramic (LD) after repeated firings and different staining techniques. METHODS: LD discs were fabricated and divided according to number of firing cycles and staining technique: CO - control, discs were crystallized (850°C/10min); SC - single-step characterization - crystallization and staining (applied with a thin brush) were performed in a single step with one firing cycle (850°C/10min); and DC - double-step characterization - crystallization firing cycle was performed first (850°C/10min), followed by staining firing cycle (770°C/90s). Specimens were fired two, four or six times (one crystallization firing cycle and one, three or five staining firing cycles), resulting into 9 groups (n=30): COII, COIV, COVI, SCII, SCIV, SCVI, DCII, DCIV and DCVI. The composition of the specimens was investigated (EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy), and the biaxial flexural strength (n=10) and staircase tests (n=20, 5×104 cycles, 5Hz) were performed. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS: EDS and XRD revealed amorphous content for stained groups. Biaxial flexural strength was not affected by repeated firings in any group, but stained groups presented lower flexural strength than control groups (p=0.001). The fatigue limit results decreased in all groups compared to flexural strength. SC groups showed similar (SCII and SCIV) or even higher fatigue limits (SCVI) than the control groups, and DC showed the lowest fatigue limit values. SEM and Raman suggested that the interfaces between staining and the LD showed only an overlap for the DC groups, whereas for the SC it was suggested an interaction between the stain and the LD. SIGNIFICANCE: Repeated firings did not result in decreased lithium disilicate flexural strength.Staining affected flexural strength and also resulted in increased amorphous content in the characterized specimens. Single-step staining resulted in the highest fatigue limit.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of adhesive application and aging on the bond durability of resin cement to etched and silanized feldspathic ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty blocks (6.4 x 6.4 x 4.8 mm) of feldspathic ceramic (Vita VM7) were produced. The ceramic surfaces were conditioned with 10% hydrofluoric acid gel for 60 s and silanized. They were then randomly divided into two groups. While half of the group received no adhesive, in the other half, a layer of adhesive (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus) was applied. Each ceramic block was then placed in its silicone mold with the treated surface exposed. The dual-cured resin cement (Variolink II) was injected into the mold over the treated surface and polymerized. Specimens were sectioned to achieve nontrimmed bar specimens (approximately 12 sticks/block) that were randomly divided into 2 groups: a) non-aged--microtensile bond test immediately after sectioning; b) aged-thermocycling (TC) 12,000 times, 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C, and water storage (50 days). The microtensile bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 1 mm/min). The failure types were examined using an optical light microscope and SEM. Bond strength results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: The adhesive application affected the bond strength results significantly (p = 0.0001) (without adhesive > with adhesive). While aging conditions did not reduce the bond strength in the groups that received no adhesive (20 +/- 5.3 MPa non-aged and 21.5 +/- 5.6 aged) (p = 0.1698), it significantly affected the bond strength results of the group with adhesive application (18 +/- 4.4 MPa to 14.4 +/- 4.7 MPa) (p < 0.001). All groups showed mainly mixed type of failures between the ceramic and the resin cement (81% to 100%). The group in which no adhesive was applied presented a higher incidence of cohesive failure of ceramic after aging (18%) than those of the other groups. CONCLUSION: The use of adhesive did not improve resin cement adhesion to the etched and silanized feldspathic ceramic after long-term thermocycling and water storage.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of disinfectant solutions (1% sodium hypochlorite, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate, 2% glutaraldehyde, 100% vinegar, tabs of sodium perborate-based denture cleanser, and 3.8% sodium perborate) in the disinfection of acrylic resin specimens (n = 10/group) contaminated in vitro by Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans, S. aureus, Escherichia coli, or Bacillus subtilis as measured by residual colony-forming unit (CFU). In a separate experiment, acrylic resin was treated with disinfectants to monitor potential effects on surface roughness, Ra (microm), which might facilitate microbial adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred fifty acrylic resin specimens contaminated in vitro with 1 x 10(6) cells/ml suspensions of standard strains of the cited microorganisms were immersed in the disinfectants for 10 minutes; the control group was not submitted to any disinfection process. Final counts of microorganisms per ml were performed by plating method for the evaluation of microbial level reduction. Results were compared statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p< or = 0.05). In a parallel study aiming to evaluate the effect of the tested disinfectant on resin surface, 60 specimens were analyzed in a digital rugosimeter before and after ten cycles of 10-minute immersion in the disinfectants. Measurements of superficial roughness, Ra (mum), were compared statistically by paired t-test (p< or = 0.05). RESULTS: The results showed that 1% sodium hypochlorite, 2% glutaraldehyde, and 2% chlorhexidine digluconate were most effective against the analyzed microorganisms, followed by 100% vinegar, 3.8% sodium perborate, and tabs of sodium perborate-based denture cleanser. Superficial roughness of the specimens was higher after disinfection cycles with 3.8% sodium perborate (p= 0.03) and lower after the cycles with 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (p= 0.04). CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this experiment, it could be concluded that 1% sodium hypochlorite, 2% glutaraldehyde, 2% chlorhexidine, 100% vinegar, and 3.8% sodium perborate are valid alternatives for the disinfection of acrylic resin.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was compare the effect of two in vitro ageing protocols to intraoral aging on the flexural strength of a lithium disilicate (LD) ceramic bars with clamped ends. After polishing and crystallization, the both ends of the bars were cemented to a metallic device and subjected to mechanical cycling, thermomechanical cycling, or intraoral ageing. Ten volunteers used an intraoral device - similar to an occlusal splint with a balanced contact condition on the occlusal surface of the ceramic bar - during 8 h night time / 30 days. Both in vitro and intraoral ageing decreased the flexural residual strength of LD, with the lowest values obtained after intraoral ageing. Thus, the in vitro ageing protocols tested in this study revealed to be less deleterious than intraoral ageing of LD.

RESUMO

To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the marginal misfit and retentive strength between Y-TZP crowns and an epoxy resin. Forty (40) epoxy resin (G10) abutments (height: 5mm, conicity: 60, finish line: large chamfer) with equal dimensions were milled and included in polyurethane to simulate the periodontal ligament. Next, 40 Y-TZP crowns (thickness: 1mm) were milled (Cerec in Lab) and randomly divided into four groups (n=10) according to the surface treatment: GS(glaze spray), GP(glaze powder/liquid), P(zirconia primer) and RS(tribochemical silica coating). The conditioned surfaces were cemented with dual self-adhesive cement, light cured and submitted to thermomechanical cycling (2x106, 100N, 4Hz, 5°/55°C). Marginal misfit was analyzed by a stereomicroscope and SEM. Retentive strength test was performed (1mm/min) until crown debonding. Glaze layer thickness was also performed to GS and GP groups. Marginal misfit data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests; one-way ANOVA and Tukey (5%) analyzed the tensile strength data. The marginal misfit of the GS (48.6±19.9µm) and GP (65.4±42.5µm) were statistically lower than the RS (96±62.9µm) and P (156±113.3µm) (p=0.001). The retentive strength of the GP (470.5±104.1N) and GS (416.8±170.2N) were similar to the P (342.1±109.7N), but statistically higher than those of the RS (208.9±110N). The GS and GP glaze layer was 11.64µm and 9.73µm respectively. Thus, glaze application promoted lower marginal discrepancy and higher retentive strength values than conventional techniques.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of lithium disilicate (L), cemented on different substrates (epoxy resin - E and metal - M) with dual-cure resin cement (Rc) and zinc phosphate cement (Zc), not aged, thermally aged (TC) or thermo-mechanical aged (TC/MC). Material and Methods: Disks of L, E, and M were fabricated, and the cementation was performed according to the following groups: ERc (L+E+Rc); MRc (L+M+Rc); MZc (L+M+Zc); EZc (L+E+Zc). Ten samples from each described group were tested in BFS, ten more samples were subjected to TC (1×104 cycles between 5 ºC and 55 ºC water), and the last 10 samples were subjected to TC/MC (MC: 1.2×106 cycles, 50 N, 3.8 Hz). The BFS test was performed and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to evaluate the failure mode. The effect of the cementation strategy (cement/substrate) was compared in each aging method and the effect of the aging method was evaluated for each cementation strategy by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α=0.05). Results: The strength values were highest to M (237.8 ~ 463.9 MPa), in comparison to the E (41.03 ~ 66.76 MPa), despite aging and luting agent. Flexural strength data decreased after TC and TC/MC in groups cemented with Zc, but was stable when cemented with Rc. SEM analysis indicated that failure origins were located at the tensile surface of the L. Conclusion: Lithium disilicate discs cemented to the metallic substrate presented the highest biaxial flexural strength. The cementation with dual-cure resin cement did not decrease BFS after aging (AU)

Alternative surface treatments have been proposed for the cementation of lithium disilicate ceramics aiming to improve adhesive and flexural strength under fatigue. This study aimed to evaluate the slow crack growth (SCG) parameters of the lithium disilicate ceramic after hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching or air abrasion (AB) as surface treatments. Ceramic discs were treated with HF (5%, 20 s) or AB (30 µm silica-modified alumina particles, 2.8 bar, 10 mm distance, 15 s), and received a layer of resin cement. The surface roughness after surface treatment was evaluated (n = 5). Samples were tested in a piston-on-three-ball assembly to evaluate the flexural strength (n = 20), inert strength (n = 25), and to determine SCG parameters n and D (n = 35). The highest roughness (p < 0.01) was observed in the AB group, with the highest reliability according to the Weibull analysis, but the lowest SCG susceptibility. Flexural (p = 0.03) and inert strength (p < 0.01) were the greatest in the HF group. Despite exhibiting lower strength than 5% HF, air abrasion may be an alternative for the surface treatment of lithium disilicate surfaces, indicating the best prognosis over time.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of surface conditioning methods and thermocycling on the bond strength between a resin composite and an indirect composite system in order to test the repair bond strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen blocks (5 x 5 x 4 mm) of indirect resin composite (Sinfony) were fabricated according to the manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were randomly assigned to one of the following two treatment conditions (9 blocks per treatment): (1) 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF) for 90s (Dentsply) + silanization, (2) silica coating with 30-im SiOx particles (CoJet) + silanization. After surface conditioning, the bonding agent was applied (Adper Single Bond) and light polymerized. The composite resin (W3D Master) was condensed and polymerized incrementally to form a block. Following storage in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, the indirect composite/resin blocks were sectioned in two axes (x and y) with a diamond disk under coolant irrigation to obtain nontrimmed specimens (sticks) with approximately 0.6 mm2 of bonding area. Twelve specimens were obtained per block (N=216, n=108 sticks). The specimens from each repaired block were again randomly divided into 2 groups and tested either after storage in water for 24 h or thermocycling (6000 cycles, 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C). The microtensile bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 1 mm/min). The mean bond strengths of the specimens of each block were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: Both surface conditioning (p = 0.0001) and storage conditions (p = 0.0001) had a significant effect on the results. After 24 h water storage, silica coating and silanization (method 2) showed significantly higher bond strength results (46.4 +/- 13.8 MPa) than that of hydrofluoric acid etching and silanization (method 1) (35.8 +/- 9.7 MPa) (p < 0.001). After thermocycling, no significant difference was found between the mean bond strengths obtained with method 1 (34.1 +/- 8.9 MPa) and method 2 (31.9 +/- 7.9 MPa) (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although after 24 h of testing, silica coating and silanization performed significantly better in resin-resin repair bond strength, both HF acid gel and silica coating followed by silanization revealed comparable bond strength results after thermocycling for 6000 times.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the influence of different forms of heat treatment on a pre-hydrolyzed silane to improve the adhesion of phosphate monomer-based (MDP) resin cement to glass ceramic. Resin and feldspathic ceramic blocks (n=48, n=6 for bond test, n=2 for microscopy) were randomly divided into 6 groups and subject to surface treatments: G1: Hydrofluoric acid (HF) 9.6% for 20 s + Silane + MDP resin cement (Panavia F); G2: HF 9.6% for 20 s + Silane + Heat Treatment (oven) + Panavia F; G3: Silane + Heat Treatment (oven) + Panavia F; G4: HF 9.6% for 20 s + Silane + Heat Treatment (hot air) + Panavia F; G5: Silane + Heat Treatment (hot air) + Panavia F; G6: Silane + Panavia F. Microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min). After debonding, the substrate and adherent surfaces were analyzed using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to categorize the failure types. Data were analyzed statistically using two-way test ANOVA and Tukey's test (=0.05). Heat treatment of the silane containing MDP, with prior etching with HF (G2: 13.15 ± 0.89a; G4: 12.58 ± 1.03a) presented significantly higher bond strength values than the control group (G1: 9.16 ± 0.64b). The groups without prior etching (G3: 10.47 ± 0.70b; G5: 9.47 ± 0.32b) showed statistically similar bond strength values between them and the control group (G1). The silane application without prior etching and heat treatment resulted in the lowest mean bond strength (G6: 8.05 ± 0.37c). SEM analysis showed predominantly adhesive failures and EDS analysis showed common elements of spectra (Si, Na, Al, K, O, C) characterizing the microstructure of the glass-ceramic studied. Heat treatment of the pre-hydrolyzed silane containing MDP in an oven at 100 °C for 2 min or with hot air application at 50 ± 5 ºC for 1 min, was effective in increasing the bond strength values between the ceramic and resin cement containing MDP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of air abrasion and polishing regimens on the flexural strength of yttrium stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP). METHODS: From Y-TZP blocks (InCeram 2000 YZ Cubes; Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) 120 bars (25 mm × 4 mm × 1.2 mm) were obtained according to ISO 6872:2008 and randomly divided into 4 groups: Group C: (control) without surface treatment (n = 30); Group APA: Air abrasion with aluminum oxide (44 µm) (n = 30); Group SC: Silica-coating (CoJet, 30 µm) (n = 30); Group FD: Fine diamond bur (n = 30). Subsequently, all specimens were subjected to 4-point bending test (in distilled water at 37 °C) in a universal testing machine (EMIC DL 1000; São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, Brazil); cross-head speed: 0.5 mm/min). The characteristic strength (σ0) of each specimen was obtained from the flexural strength test and evaluated using Weibull analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis was utilized to quantity the monoclinic phase. The surface topography of specimens was analyzed using 3D optical profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after surface conditioning methods. The flexural strength data (σ4p) were statistically analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, Tukey test (α = 0.05) and Weibull (m = modulus, σ0 = characteristic strength) were calculated. RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviations (MPa) of the groups were as follows: C: 1196.2 ± 284.2a; APA: 1369.7 ± 272.3a; SC: 1207.1 ± 229.7a and FD: 874.4 ± 365.4b. The values (m) and (σ0) were as follows: C: 4.5 and 1308.12; APA: 5.9 and 1477.88; SC: 6.0 and 1300.28; and FD: 2.6 and 985.901, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Air particle abrasion with neither silica nor alumina showed significant difference compared to the control group but grinding with fine diamond bur impaired the flexural strength of the zirconia tested.

RESUMO

Aim: To evaluate the influence of lengths and different luting agents on the bond strength of fiberglass posts' adhesion to dentin. Methods: Sixty single-root bovine teeth were endodontically treated and included in polyether and acrilyc resin to simulate a periodontal ligament. These were divided into 6 groups according to the post lengths (6, 10 or 14 mm) and luting agents (self-adhesive dual resin cement U; or etch-and-rinse dual resin cement A): U6, U10, U14, A6, A19, and A14. All fiberglass posts were cemented according to manufacturer instructions. After this, mechanical aging was performed (1.2x106 cycles; 4 Hz, 90 N). The push-out specimens were then conducted (2.0 ± 0.1 mm), with the test executed in a universal machine (10 kgf at 0.5 mm/min). Data obtained were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed in bond strength between the groups due to the type of luting agent (p > 0.05). However, the isolated post-length factor showed significantly different results for the U groups (p < 0.05). The U10 group showed similar union values to U6 but statistically inferior to U14. Conclusion: bond strength of fiberglass posts of the same length as the dentin presented no differences according to the luting agent, but the post-length property influenced the bond strength when self-adhesive resin cement was used.

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the influence of silane heat treatment in bond durability between two resin cements and CAD/CAM feldspathic ceramic. Methods 40 feldspathic ceramic blocks were obtained, and were duplicated in microhybrid composite. All ceramic blocks were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20 s and received application of silane agent. The blocks were randomizedinto eight groups (n=5) according to the surface treatments and luting agents: P- Panavia F; PAg- Panavia F + Aging; HP- Heat Treatment + Panavia F; HPAg- Heat Treatment + Panavia F + Aging; R- RelyX ARC; Rag- RelyX ARC + Aging; HR- Heat Treatment + RelyX ARC; HRAg- Heat Treatment + RelyX ARC + Aging. The heat treatment was performed in furnace at 100 °C for 2 min. All blocks were cemented and cut to obtain samples with adhesive area of 1 mm2. Aging was performed with 10000 thermal cycles. The samples were subjected to microtensile bond strength test. Results The three-way ANOVA test revealed a significant interaction between cement versus heat treatment (p=0.001) and heat treatment versus thermal cycling (p=0.001) indicating that there was a change in bond strength due to surface treatment and aging. Conclusion Therefore, the heat treatment of the silane at 100 ºC for 2 minutes obtained higher values of bond strength between the resin cement and a feldspathic ceramicafter aging.

RESUMO

Aim: evaluate the influence of etching time with hydrofluoric acid on the bond strength of a Yttrium-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramic with a superficial glaze layer and a resin cement. Methods: Y-TZP blocks were cut to obtain 40 samples. They were distributed into four groups (n = 10): control treated by sandblasting with silica-coated alumina (RS) and three glazed experimental groups with different etching times: GS20s, GS60s and GS100s. Cementation was done with a universal adhesive and a resin cement. Two cement cylinders were made in each block. After thermocycling, the shear bond test was performed. Two extra samples of each group were made to obtain profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, mapping and backscattered electron detector images. Energy dispersive spectrometry and goniometry were also performed. Results: Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests demonstrated bond strength differences only between the RS (22.10MPa) and the GS groups (GS20s: 8,10Mpa; GS60s: 10.49MPa; GS100s: 7.53MPa) (p = 0.001), but there was no difference among the experimental groups (p > 0.05). The contact angles were 55.33º (RS); 70.78° (GS100s); 48.20º (GS60s) and 28.73º (GS20s). ANOVA and Tukey test demonstrated similar wettability of RS to GS60s and GS100s (p > 0.05), but all the experimental groups were statistically different between them (p < 0.001). Qualitative image analysis revealed an irregular glaze distribution after etching. The thickness of the remaining glaze layer measured by profilometry was 5±1µm (GS20S), 4±1µm (GS60S) and 3±1µm (GS100s). Conclusion: The etching time of glazed zirconia did not influence the adhesive strength of the ceramic to the resin cement

RESUMO

Accurate color selection of direct or indirect dental restorations is a subjective task. Mobile phones are tools that may minimize color assessment errors. The objective was to use photographs taken with smartphones to guide the dental surgeon in choosing the right color in oral rehabilitation. A tooth was photographed for color assessment and the VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER® shade guide was used. Photographs were submitted to an image editing software for full saturation removal. Images of the tooth and scale in black and white were compared. This method allowed to select the tooth's value, which is considered the most subjective dimension in color choice. Although it is an auxiliary and complementary method to traditional methods, smartphones are tools capable of reducing the range of color possibilities and minimizing possible failures (AU)
