BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness are associated with the occurrence of psychotic experiences. However, dynamics of these phenomena in people with subclinical experiences, commonly referred to as psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), remains largely unknown. Therefore, in this study we performed a temporal network analysis to model dynamic predictions between social isolation, loneliness, negative affect, social stress, and PLEs. METHODS: A total of 77 drug-naïve individuals with PLEs from a transdiagnostic sample were enrolled. Data were obtained using the experience sampling method (ESM). The ESM questionnaires were delivered during 7 consecutive days (6 assessments per day). Therefore, 3234 data entries were analyzed. RESULTS: Social isolation predicted next-moment emergence of PLEs through the effects on loneliness and negative affect. Also, PLEs appeared to predict next-moment loneliness, but not social isolation, through the effects on negative affect. Social stress did not predict any variables in the network. However, it was predicted by previous-moment PLEs and social isolation. Negative affect had the highest in-strength and out-strength centrality. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from the present study indicate that social isolation might predict the emergence of PLEs through the effects of momentary loneliness and negative affect. Also, loneliness might be bidirectionally associated with PLEs. Interventions targeting negative affect and social isolation might be beneficial in people with PLEs.

OBJECTIVES: The aim is to assess the level of stigmatization and knowledge of dementia among university students of medical, rehabilitation and social faculties in Poland. Possible correlates of these concepts and group differences are also investigated. METHODS: We applied quantitative methods using an online questionnaire comprising sociodemographics, the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale, a vignette of a person with dementia and the modified Family Stigma in Alzheimer's Disease Scale. RESULTS: Students had low levels of dementia knowledge and moderate levels of stigma. Medical science students had significantly better knowledge than the other groups but did not differ in their level of stigma. Relationships between the main variables were complex. Emotional and cognitive stigmatizing attributions were negatively correlated with knowledge about communication and behaviors of people with dementia. Better knowledge on causes and characteristics, as well as on risks and health promotion of the disease also triggered fewer negative attributions toward people with dementia. CONCLUSIONS: If health-related programs are to be effective, they should provide opportunities for the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills that also address the stigmatization of people living with dementia. Well-established biomedical knowledge on dementia must be supplemented with a person-centered approach and proper communication skills.

Impaired hormonal regulation of appetite may contribute to higher cardiovascular risk in bipolar disorder (BD). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating peripheral blood levels of appetite-regulating hormones in BD and controls. A total of 32 studies were included. Leptin and insulin levels were significantly elevated in patients with BD during euthymia, but not in other mood states. Greater differences in the number of male participants between patients with BD and healthy controls were associated with higher effect size estimates for the levels of insulin. There were significant positive correlations of effect size estimates for the levels of adiponectin with the percentage of individuals with type I BD and duration of BD. Our findings point to the mechanisms underlying high rates of cardiometabolic comorbidities in BD. Moreover, they suggest that investigating hormonal regulation of appetite might help to understand differences in the neurobiology of BD types.

BACKGROUND: Parotoid gland secretion of bufonid toads is a rich source of toxic molecules that are used against predators, parasites and pathogens. Bufadienolides and biogenic amines are the principal compounds responsible for toxicity of parotoid secretion. Many toxicological and pharmacological analyses of parotoid secretions have been performed, but little is known about the processes related to poison production and secretion. Therefore, our aim was to investigate protein content in parotoids of the common toad, Bufo bufo, to understand the processes that regulate synthesis and excretion of toxins as well as functioning of parotoid macroglands. RESULTS: Applying a proteomic approach we identified 162 proteins in the extract from toad's parotoids that were classified into 11 categories of biological functions. One-third (34.6%) of the identified molecules, including acyl-CoA-binding protein, actin, catalase, calmodulin, and enolases, were involved in cell metabolism. We found many proteins related to cell division and cell cycle regulation (12.0%; e.g. histone and tubulin), cell structure maintenance (8.4%; e.g. thymosin beta-4, tubulin), intra- and extracellular transport (8.4%), cell aging and apoptosis (7.3%; e.g. catalase and pyruvate kinase) as well as immune (7.0%; e.g. interleukin-24 and UV excision repair protein) and stress (6.3%; including heat shock proteins, peroxiredoxin-6 and superoxide dismutase) response. We also identified two proteins, phosphomevalonate kinase and isopentenyl-diphosphate delta-isomerase 1, that are involved in synthesis of cholesterol which is a precursor for bufadienolides biosynthesis. STRING protein-protein interaction network predicted for identified proteins showed that most proteins are related to metabolic processes, particularly glycolysis, stress response and DNA repair and replication. The results of GO enrichment and KEGG analyses are also consistent with these findings. CONCLUSION: This finding indicates that cholesterol may be synthesized in parotoids, and not only in the liver from which is then transferred through the bloodstream to the parotoid macroglands. Presence of proteins that regulate cell cycle, cell division, aging and apoptosis may indicate a high epithelial cell turnover in parotoids. Proteins protecting skin cells from DNA damage may help to minimize the harmful effects of UV radiation. Thus, our work extends our knowledge with new and important functions of parotoids, major glands involved in the bufonid chemical defence.

The efficiency of aposematic colouration of prey is based on the innate bias or facilitation of avoidance learning of predators. In many toxic bufonids, larvae are uniformly black, which is considered a warning signal. We compared fish predation on normal (black) and 'transient albino' (greyish) common toad Bufo bufo tadpoles that did not differ in toxicity or activity. In a two-stage experiment, each fish was presented with tadpoles of one colour in the first trial and the other colour in a subsequent trial. While tadpoles sampled by fish were typically not ingested, some died from injuries. The attack rate did not differ between tadpole phenotypes nor trials, irrespective of which phenotype was the first exposed to the fish. However, during the second trial, the sampled tadpoles, independent of colouration, were mouthed by fish for shorter periods and tadpole mortality decreased. The duration of mouthing also declined with an increasing number of attacks during subsequent trials. We conclude that in single-species prey populations, black tadpole colouration is not a warning signal as it does not accelerate predator learning about prey unprofitability. Our results indicate that with growing experience, predators sample potentially toxic prey more cautiously. This may explain why natural selection does not eliminate aposematic morphs even if predators continuously sample conspicuous prey.

Psychotic disorders often develop as the continuum of subclinical symptoms that include hallucination-like and delusion-like experiences, and are commonly referred to as psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). To date, a number of neurodevelopmental risk factors of psychosis have been detected, yet their mutual interplay remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the additive association of childhood trauma history, reading disabilities and symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with psychosis proneness. A total of 3000 young adults (58.3% females, aged 18-35 years) with a negative history of psychiatric treatment were recruited to the cross-sectional study through computer-assisted web interview. Self-reports were administered to measure childhood trauma history, ADHD symptoms and reading disabilities. Linear regression analyses revealed significant main associations of childhood trauma history and reading disabilities with higher levels of PLEs. There were no significant main associations of ADHD with the level of PLEs. However, the associations of all possible interactions between neurodevelopmental risk factors with the level of PLEs were significant. Our findings suggest that childhood trauma history and reading disabilities may additively increase a risk of psychosis. The present findings bring new implications for early intervention strategies in psychosis and posit the rationale of recording the accumulation of neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Understanding brain death is essential for progress in organ transplantation; however, it remains a challenging ethical matter. In 2019, Poland revised its legislation on brain death to align with international standards. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and worldview concerning brain death among Polish medical students, categorised according to their stage of education. METHODS: An online questionnaire was administered to 169 medical students from four Polish medical universities. The participants were divided into preclinical (n = 94) and clinical (n = 75) groups. The questionnaire consisted of two parts, with the first part comprising 13 questions focusing on knowledge about brain death and the process of its determination. The second part contained six questions related to the participants' worldview regarding brain death, particularly concerning organ transplantation. RESULTS: The average score obtained by the respondents was 7.53 (± 2.35; min. 1, max. 13) in knowledge checking part of the developed questionnaire (maximal score:13). Students in the clinical stage of their education achieved significantly higher scores compared to preclinical students (mean 8.84; ± 1.89 vs mean 6.49; ± 2.15; p < 0.001). Significant correlations were found between the results of the knowledge part of the questionnaire and responses to worldview questions. CONCLUSIONS: The stage of education influenced the knowledge of brain death among medical students, although the overall test scores were unsatisfactory. Higher test scores were associated with worldview responses indicating compliance with the current legislation in Poland and evidence-based medicine.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder with a chronic, progressive course. The etiology of this condition is linked to the interactions of multiple genes and environmental factors. The earlier age of onset of schizophrenia, the higher frequency of negative symptoms in the clinical presentation, and the poorer response to antipsychotic treatment in men compared to women suggests the involvement of sex hormones in these processes. This article aims to draw attention to the possible relationship between testosterone and some clinical features in male schizophrenic patients and discuss the complex nature of these phenomena based on data from the literature. PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched to select the papers without limiting the time of the publications. Hormone levels in the body are regulated by many organs and systems, and take place through the neuroendocrine, hormonal, neural, and metabolic pathways. Sex hormones play an important role in the development and function of the organism. Besides their impact on secondary sex characteristics, they influence brain development and function, mood, and cognition. In men with schizophrenia, altered testosterone levels were noted. In many cases, evidence from available single studies gave contradictory results. However, it seems that the testosterone level in men affected by schizophrenia may differ depending on the phase of the disease, types of clinical symptoms, and administered therapy. The etiology of testosterone level disturbances may be very complex. Besides the impact of the illness (schizophrenia), stress, and antipsychotic drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, testosterone levels may be influenced by, i.a., obesity, substances of abuse (e.g., ethanol), or liver damage.

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of schizophrenia is multidimensional and intensively studied. The gut-brain axis disturbances might play a significant role in the development of schizophrenia. METHODS: We compared the gut microbiota of 53 individuals with schizophrenia and 58 healthy controls, using the 16S rRNA sequencing method. Individuals with schizophrenia were assessed using the following scales: the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS: No significant between-group differences in α-diversity measures were observed. Increased abundance of Lactobacillales (order level), Bacilli (class level) and Actinobacteriota (phylum level) were found in individuals with schizophrenia regardless of potential confounding factors, and using two independent analytical approaches (the distance-based redundancy analysis and the generalised linear model analysis). Additionally, significant correlations between various bacterial taxa (the Bacteroidia class, the Actinobacteriota phylum, the Bacteroidota phylum, the Coriobacteriales order and the Coriobacteria class) and clinical manifestation (the severity of negative symptoms, performance of language abilities, social and occupational functioning) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicates that gut microbiota alterations are present in European patients with schizophrenia. The abundance of certain bacterial taxa might be associated with the severity of negative symptoms, cognitive performance and general functioning. Nonetheless, additional studies are needed before the translation of our results into clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: High-frequency spinal cord stimulation (HF-SCS) is a potential method to provide natural and effective inspiratory muscle pacing in patients with ventilator-dependent spinal cord injuries. Experimental data have demonstrated that HF-SCS elicits physiological activation of the diaphragm and inspiratory intercostal muscles via spinal cord pathways. However, the activation thresholds, extent of activation, and optimal electrode configurations (i.e., lead separation, contact spacing, and contact length) to activate these neural elements remain unknown. Therefore, the goal of this study was to use a computational modeling approach to investigate the direct effects of HF-SCS on the spinal cord and to optimize electrode design and stimulation parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a computer model of HF-SCS that consisted of two main components: 1) finite element models of the electric field generated during HF-SCS, and 2) multicompartment cable models of axons and motoneurons within the spinal cord. We systematically evaluated the neural recruitment during HF-SCS for several unique electrode designs and stimulation configurations to optimize activation of these neural elements. We then evaluated our predictions by testing two of these lead designs with in vivo canine experiments. RESULTS: Our model results suggested that within physiological stimulation amplitudes, HF-SCS activates both axons in the ventrolateral funiculi (VLF) and inspiratory intercostal motoneurons. We used our model to predict a lead design to maximize HF-SCS activation of these neural targets. We evaluated this lead design via in vivo experiments, and our computational model predictions demonstrated excellent agreement with our experimental testing. CONCLUSIONS: Our computational modeling and experimental results support the potential advantages of a lead design with longer contacts and larger edge-to-edge contact spacing to maximize inspiratory muscle activation during HF-SCS at the T2 spinal level. While these results need to be further validated in future studies, we believe that the results of this study will help improve the efficacy of HF-SCS technologies for inspiratory muscle pacing.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically determine whether use of the spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system to restore cough may improve bowel management (BM) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN: Experimental studies (clinical trial). SETTING: Inpatient hospital setting for electrode insertion; outpatient setting for measurement of respiratory pressures; home setting for application of SCS. PARTICIPANTS: Participants (N=5) with cervical SCI. INTERVENTION: A fully implantable SCS cough system was surgically placed in each subject. SCS was applied at home, 2-3 times/d, on a chronic basis, every time bowel regimen was performed and as needed for secretion management. Stimulus parameters were set at values resulting in near maximum airway pressure generation, which was used as an index of expiratory muscle strength. Participants also used SCS during their bowel routine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Airway pressure generation achieved with SCS. Weekly completion of Bowel Routine Log including BM time, mechanical measures, and medications used. RESULTS: Mean pressure during spontaneous efforts was 30±8 cmH2O. After a period of reconditioning, SCS resulted in pressure of 146±21 cmH2O. The time required for BM routines was reduced from 118±34 minutes to 18±2 minutes (P<.05) and was directly related to the magnitude of pressure development during SCS. Mechanical methods for BM were completely eliminated in 4 patients. No patients experienced fecal incontinence as result of SCS. Each participant also reported marked overall improvement associated with BM. CONCLUSIONS: Our results of this pilot study suggest that SCS to restore cough may be a useful method to improve BM and life quality for both patients with SCI and their caregivers. Our results indicate that the improvement in BM is secondary to restoration of intra-abdominal pressure development.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders. Currently used antidepressants, acting on the monoaminergic system, are insufficient for depression treatment. In recent years, potential application of NMDA receptor modulators in the treatment of drug-resistant depression has gained attention. Administration of ketamine, being a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, contributes to a faster remission of symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The aim of this paper is to review current studies on the use of ketamine in the treatment of drug-resistant depression, compare results of various administration methods - intravenous, intranasal or oral, as well as compare its effectiveness with that of other antidepressants. RESULTS: Numerous studies show the drug is effective and well tolerated, particularly in patients with increased suicidal thoughts. However, there are concerns on increasing tolerance to the drug and the possibility of implementing a long-term treatment. CONCLUSION: Oral and intranasal forms of the drug are particularly promising due to their non-invasiveness and ability to self-administer. In March 2019, S-ketamine nasal spray was registered by the FDA for the treatment of drug-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Animal toxins can have medical and therapeutic applications. Principally, toxins produced by insects, arachnids, snakes and frogs have been characterized. Venomous mammals are rare, and their venoms have not been comprehensively investigated. Among shrews, only the venom of Blarina brevicauda has been analysed so far, and blarina toxin has been proven to be its main toxic component. It is assumed that Neomys fodiens employs its venom to hunt larger prey. However, the toxic profile, properties and mode of action of its venom are largely unknown. Therefore, we analysed the cardio-, myo- and neurotropic properties of N. fodiens venom and saliva of non-venomous Sorex araneus (control tests) in vitro in physiological bioassays carried out on two model organisms: beetles and frogs. For the first time, we fractionated N. fodiens venom and S. araneus saliva by performing chromatographic separation. Next, the properties of selected compounds were analysed in cardiotropic bioassays in the Tenebrio molitor heart. RESULTS: The venom of N. fodiens caused a high decrease in the conduction velocity of the frog sciatic nerve, as well as a significant decrease in the force of frog calf muscle contraction. We also recorded a significant decrease in the frog heart contractile activity. Most of the selected compounds from N. fodiens venom displayed a positive chronotropic effect on the beetle heart. However, one fraction caused a strong decrease in the T. molitor heart contractile activity coupled with a reversible cardiac arrest. We did not observe any responses of the insect heart and frog organs to the saliva of S. araneus. Preliminary mass spectrometry analysis revealed that calmodulin-like protein, thymosin ß-10, hyaluronidase, lysozyme C and phospholipase A2 are present in the venom of N. fodiens, whereas thymosin ß4, lysozyme C and ß-defensin are present in S. araneus saliva. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that N. fodiens venom has stronger paralytic properties and lower cardioinhibitory activity. Therefore, it is highly probable that N. fodiens might use its venom as a prey immobilizing agent. We also confirmed that S. araneus is not a venomous mammal because its saliva did not exhibit any toxic effects.

Recognizing patterns of parasite distribution among wildlife hosts is of major importance due to growing risk of transmission of zoonotic diseases to humans. Thus, sex-dependent parasite distribution in higher vertebrates is extensively studied, and males are often found more parasitized than females. Male-biased parasitism may be the result of weaker immunocompetence of male hosts owing to the immunosuppressive effect of androgens. Moreover, larger hosts (males) may demonstrate higher parasite infestation levels than smaller individuals (females), as they constitute a better nutritional resource for parasites and provide them with a greater variety of niches. In the present work, we investigated sex-dependent patterns of flea distribution among three common rodent species (Apodemus agrarius, Apodemus flavicollis, and Myodes glareolus). We hypothesized that males have a higher flea infestation than females. We confirm male-biased parasitism in A. agrarius and M. glareolus, but not in A. flavicollis. Additionally, flea infestation increased with body mass in A. agrarius, but not in A. flavicollis and M. glareolus. The detected differences in parasite distribution among sexes are probably the result of immunosuppressive effects of androgens and spatial behavior of males.

Only a few studies comparing flea composition on the coast and in the mountains have been conducted. We investigated differences in flea communities infesting small mammals in selected habitats in northern, central, and southern Poland. We predicted (1) a greater number of flea species in the southeastern Poland and a lower number in the north, (2) a greater number of flea species in fertile and wet habitats than in poor and arid habitats, and (3) a low similarity of flea species between flea communities in western and eastern Poland. We found a negative effect of increasing latitude on flea species richness. We suppose that the mountains providing a variety of environments and the limits of the geographic ranges of several flea subspecies in southeastern Poland result in a higher number of flea species. There was a positive effect of increasing wetness of habitat on flea species richness. We found a high diversity in flea species composition between western and eastern Poland (beta diversity = 11) and between central and eastern Poland (beta diversity = 12). Re-colonization of Poland by small mammals and their ectoparasites from different (western and eastern) refugees can affect on this high diversity of flea species.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term effects of the cough stimulation system. DESIGN: Nonrandomized clinical trial of subjects using the study device well beyond the period of close follow-up. SETTING: Use of the study device in the home setting. PARTICIPANTS: Subjects (N = 10) implanted with the device for a minimum of 2 years (mean 4.6 ± 0.6 years). INTERVENTIONS: Application of daily stimulation. OUTCOME MEASURES: Airway pressure generation and other clinical assessments including ease in raising secretions, life quality, caregiver support, and incidence of respiratory tract infections were measured at 1 year and mean 4.6 years after implantation. RESULTS: Each subject continued to use the device on a regular basis. During SCS, mean maximum airway pressures were 103.1 ± 20.4 and 107.7 ± 23.0 cm H2O at the 1-year and mean 4.6-year follow-up points, respectively (P < 0.05 compared with pre-implant and not significantly different (NS) compared with 1-year follow-up). Benchmarks related to ease in raising secretions and improvements in life quality related to respiratory care were maintained at the mean 4.6 year follow-up. The need for trained caregivers to provide other means of secretion management remained significantly below the pre-implant values (P < 0.05). The incidence of acute respiratory tract infections remained low at 0.2 ± 0.1 events/year, which is significantly below the pre-implant value of 1.4 ± 0.3 events/year (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Subjects continued to use the system on a long-term basis beyond the period of close follow-up and to continued derive significant clinical benefits.

Previous studies investigating cortisol levels in people with depression or depressive symptoms have provided mixed findings. It has been suggested that the difficulty to generalize findings across studies in this field might be related to interindividual variability in experiencing depressive symptoms in terms of clinical and social contexts. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to test the association of morning cortisol levels and depressive symptoms in a non-clinical sample of young men taking into consideration the level of perceived loneliness. We hypothesized that the level of loneliness might moderate the association between morning cortisol levels and depressive symptoms. A total of 102 participants (aged 29.9 ± 5.0 years) completed questionnaires measuring the levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, and loneliness. Cortisol levels were determined in four morning samples of saliva. There were significant positive correlations of the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and the mean increase in cortisol levels during the measurement period (MnInc) with the levels of depressive symptoms and loneliness. Moreover, a significant association of the depressive symptoms by loneliness interaction with the CAR and the MnInc was found. Specifically, the correlation of depressive symptoms with the CAR and the MnInc appeared to be significant and negative at high levels of loneliness. No significant association between depressive symptoms and the CAR was observed in men with low levels of loneliness. There were no significant associations of depressive symptoms, loneliness and the depressive symptoms by loneliness interaction with cortisol levels at awakening. In conclusion, findings from the present study indicate the importance of social contexts in understanding the association between altered activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and depressive symptoms in men.

Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) refer to sub-threshold hallucinations and delusions observed in both clinical samples and the general population. Psychotic-like experiences have far-reaching implications for an individual's coping strategies and daily functioning. They are associated with both psychotic and non-psychotic disorders. This article presents a comprehensive review of the current literature on PLEs, incorporating a detailed exploration of the definition, prevalence, risk factors, functional impairments, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Medline/PubMed and Embase were searched to establish and identify the literature. A total of 108 studies met our inclusion criteria. The genetic and biochemical backgrounds of PLEs are discussed, focusing on gene polymorphisms, changes in brain gyrification and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. Psychological factors, such as trauma exposure, emotion regulation difficulties, cognitive biases, and attachment issues, were thoroughly examined, especially in terms of their impact on the emergence of PLEs. Here, we show how important the clinical aspects of developmental PLEs are, underlining the significance of an increased risk of self-harm and suicidal behaviors in those individuals and the comorbidity of psychiatric disorders in enabling clinicians to discern specific areas to observe. Although there is limited evidence on effective protocols for PLE management, various treatment approaches are explained. Despite increased research on PLEs in recent years, further investigation is needed to fully understand the nature of PLEs and to optimize therapeutic strategies. This article consolidates the current knowledge by synthesizing information on PLEs, including risk factors, comorbidities, treatments, and their impact on individual's lives.

Venom production has evolved independently many times in the animal kingdom, although it is rare among mammals. Venomous shrews produce venom in their submandibular salivary glands and use it for food acquisition. Only a few toxins have been identified in shrew venoms thus far, and their modes of action require investigation. The biological and molecular processes relating to venom production and gland functioning also remain unknown. To address this gap, we investigated protein content in extracts from venom glands of two shrew species, Neomys fodiens and Sorex araneus, and interpreted their biological functions. Applying a proteomic approach coupled with Gene Ontology enrichment analysis, we identified 313 and 187 putative proteins in venom glands of N. fodiens and S. araneus, respectively. A search of the UniProt database revealed that most of the proteins found in both shrew species were involved in metabolic processes and stress response, while GO enrichment analysis revealed more stress-related proteins in the glands of S. araneus. Molecules that regulate molecule synthesis, cell cycles, and cell divisions are necessary to enable venom regeneration and ensure its effectiveness in predation and food hoarding. The presence of proteins involved in stress response may be the result of shrews' high metabolic rate and the costs of venom replenishment. Some proteins are likely to promote toxin spreading during envenomation and, due to their proteolytic action, reinforce venom toxicity. Finally, finding numerous proteins involved in immune response suggests a potential role of shrew venom gland secretions in protection against pathogens. These findings open up new perspectives for studying biological functions of molecules from shrew venom glands and extend our knowledge on the functioning of eulipotyphlan venom systems. Because the majority of existing and putative venomous mammals use oral venom systems to inject venom into target species, the methods presented here provide a promising avenue for confirming or discovering new taxa of venomous mammals.

The outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 caused a rapid worsening of global mental health. Patients with severe mental disorders, including schizophrenia, are at higher risk of being infected. The neuroinvasive potential of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been confirmed. The aim of this article was to present a narrative and comprehensive review of multidimensional associations between schizophrenia and COVID-19 with special emphasis on common biological pathways. Online searches were performed in the PubMed database and covered the publication period until September 17, 2022. Search terms included "psychosis", "schizophrenia", "inflammation" and "COVID-19". Viewed as a neuroinflammatory state, schizophrenia shares several neurobiological mechanisms with the COVID-19. Environmental stress, common comorbidities of schizophrenia and adverse effects of antipsychotic treatment are associated with the higher severity and mortality of the COVID-19. Additionally, more frequent relapses of psychosis have been observed, and might be related to lower treatment adherence. In the context of clinical manifestation, higher level of negative symptoms has been identified among patients with schizophrenia during the pandemic. Improvements in mental health care policy and treatment adjustment are necessary to protect people with schizophrenia who are the population that is particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Future research will show if prenatal infection with the SARS-CoV-2 increases a risk of psychosis.
