RESUMO

We report on continuous-wave laser operation of Tb3+:LiLuF4 under UV pumping. More than five times higher absorption cross sections in the UV allow for shorter gain media, which are required for future high-power diode pumping. The cross-relaxation process is found to efficiently populate the upper laser level 5D4 at doping concentrations typically used in Tb3+-doped gain media. Pumping with a frequency doubled Ti:sapphire laser at 359 nm enables laser operation in the green and yellow spectral range with slope efficiencies of 41% and 20%, respectively, at optical-to-optical efficiencies a factor of two higher than under cyan-blue pumping.

RESUMO

We report on the crystal growth, spectroscopic properties and visible laser performances of Pr3+-doped Sr0.7La0.3Mg0.3Al11.7O19 (ASL). ASL crystals doped with 2 at.% and 4 at.% Pr3+ were grown by Czochralski method. The laser experiments were carried out in a plane-concave resonator under excitation at 486 nm, provided from a 2ω-OPSL. Efficient laser emission was obtained with an 8 mm long sample of Pr(2at.%):ASL. The maximum output power amounted to 267 mW, 52 mW, and 318 mW at an absorbed power of 1.2W for red, orange, and deep red emission, respectively.

RESUMO

We report on the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, of a diode-pumped Tm:LuScO3 laser. Efficient and broadly tunable continuous wave operation in the 1973-2141 nm region and femtosecond mode-locking through the use of an ion-implanted InGaAsSb quantum-well-based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror are realized. When mode-locked, near-transform-limited pulses as short as 170 fs were generated at 2093 nm with an average output power of 113 mW and a pulse repetition frequency of 115.2 MHz. Tunable picosecond pulse generation was demonstrated in the 2074-2104 nm spectral range.

RESUMO

We present a high-peak-power SESAM-modelocked thin-disk laser (TDL) based on the gain material Yb-doped lutetia (Yb:Lu2O3), which exceeds a peak-power of 10 MW for the first time. We generate pulses as short as 534 fs with an average power of 90 W and a peak power of 10.1 MW, and in addition a peak power as high as 12.3 MW with 616-fs pulses and 82-W average power. The center lasing wavelength is 1033 nm and the pulse repetition rates are around 10 MHz. We discuss and explain the current limitations with numerical models, which show that the current peak power is limited in soliton modelocking by the interplay of the gain bandwidth and the induced absorption in the SESAM with subsequent thermal lensing effects. We use our numerical model which is validated by the current experimental results to discuss a possible road map to scale the peak power into the 100-MW regime and at the same time reduce the pulse duration further to sub-200 fs. We consider Yb:Lu2O3 as currently the most promising gain material for the combination of high peak power and short pulse duration in the thin-disk-laser geometry.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a compact extreme ultraviolet (XUV) source based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) driven directly inside the cavity of a mode-locked thin-disk laser oscillator. The laser is directly diode-pumped at a power of only 51 W and operates at a wavelength of 1034 nm and a 17.35 MHz repetition rate. We drive HHG in a high-pressure xenon gas jet with an intracavity peak intensity of 2.8×1013 W/cm2 and 320 W of intracavity average power. Despite the high-pressure gas jet, the laser operates at high stability. We detect harmonics up to the 17th order (60.8 nm, 20.4 eV) and estimate a flux of 2.6×108 photons/s for the 11th harmonic (94 nm, 13.2 eV). Due to the power scalability of the thin-disk concept, this class of compact XUV sources has the potential to become a versatile tool for areas such as attosecond science, XUV spectroscopy, and high-resolution imaging.

RESUMO

Laser written waveguides in crystalline materials can be used to make highly efficient, high gain lasers. The bi-directional emission from such lasers however is typically broadband with poor spectral control. Hybridizing a tapered, mode matched laser written Bragg grating with a broadband Yb:YAG crystalline waveguide laser, we demonstrate single longitudinal mode output from one end of the device. Careful control of the grating characteristics led to laser thresholds below 90 mW, slope efficiencies greater than 42% and output powers greater than 20 mW.

RESUMO

The potential of borate crystals, BBO, LBO and BiBO, for high average power scaling of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers is investigated. Up-to-date measurements of the absorption coefficients at 515 nm and the thermal conductivities are presented. The measured absorption coefficients are a factor of 10-100 lower than reported by the literature for BBO and LBO. For BBO, a large variation of the absorption coefficients was found between crystals from different manufacturers. The linear and nonlinear absorption coefficients at 515 nm as well as thermal conductivities were determined for the first time for BiBO. Further, different crystal cooling methods are presented. In addition, the limits to power scaling of OPCPAs are discussed.

RESUMO

We report on the first, to the best of our knowledge, continuous-wave quasi three-level lasers emitting in the cyan-blue spectral range in praseodymium-doped crystalline materials. Applying Pr(3+):BaY2F8 as an active medium, up to 201 mW of output power at 495 nm could be obtained with a slope efficiency of 27% under pumping with an optically pumped semiconductor laser (2ω-OPSL) at 480 nm. In the same pumping scheme using Pr(3+):LiYF4, output powers up to 70 mW were realized at 491 and 500 nm, respectively. With Pr(3+):BaY2F8, diode-pumped laser operation with up to 11% slope efficiency and 44 mW output power was also achieved. In the latter case, detailed investigations on the temperature dependency of the laser output were conducted. Moreover, comparative experiments were carried out for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, with green-emitting Pr(3+):BaY2F8 lasers at 524 and 553 nm both under diode and 2ω-OPSL excitation.

RESUMO

We report on crystal growth, spectroscopy, thermal conductivity and (4)I(11/2)→(4)I(13/2)-laser performance of Er:Lu(2)O(3). Pumping with an optically pumped semiconductor laser at 971 nm, 1.4 W of cw output power with a slope efficiency of ∼36% at 2.85 µm was obtained at room temperature. This exceeds the Stokes efficiency due to an upconversion process recycling population of the lower laser level back into the upper laser level, yielding the highest efficiency of any Er-sesquioxide laser around 3 µm. Under diode pumping, 5.9 W of output power with 27% of slope efficiency was achieved with an M(2) of 1.2 to 1.4.

RESUMO

Yb:YCOB is a very attractive material for femtosecond pulse generation given its broad emission bandwidth. We demonstrate continuous-wave power scaling in the thin disk geometry to the 100-W level with a 40% optical-to-optical efficiency in multi-mode operation. Furthermore, we present initial modelocking results in the thin disk geometry, achieving pulse durations as short as 270 fs. The modelocked average power is, however, limited to less than 5 W because of transverse mode degradation. This is caused by anisotropic thermal aberrations in the 15% Yb-doped thin disks which were 300 to 400 µm thick. This result confirms the potential of Yb:YCOB to generate short femtosecond pulses in the thin disk geometry but also makes clear that significantly thinner disks are required to overcome the thermal limitations for high power operation.

RESUMO

We present successful power-scaling of an Yb:Lu(2)O(3) thin disk laser to record high-power levels both in cw and mode-locked operation. In a simple multimode resonator we achieved 149 W of output power in cw operation with 73% optical-to-optical efficiency (eta(opt)). Building an 81 MHz fundamental transverse mode resonator with dispersion compensation and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) for passive mode locking we achieved 63 W of average power in 535 fs pulses (eta(opt)=35%). The output beam is nearly diffraction limited (M(2)<1.2). The 0.78 microJ pulses with a peak power of 1.28 MW had a central wavelength of 1034 nm and were close to the Fourier transform limit. With an SESAM with a larger modulation depth we obtained pulses as short as 329 fs at 40 W average power corresponding to a pulse energy of 0.49 microJ and a peak power of 1.32 MW.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the first passively mode-locked thin disk laser based on Yb:Lu(2)O(3). The laser generates 370-fs pulses with 20.5 W of average power in a diffraction-limited beam (M(2) < 1.1). The nearly transform-limited pulses have a spectral bandwidth of 3.4 nm centered near 1034 nm. With slightly longer pulses (523 fs) we obtained 24 W of average power at a pump power of 56 W, resulting in an optical-to-optical efficiency of 43%, which is higher than for any previously mode-locked thin disk laser.
