A longitudinal survey was conducted to investigate the presence of Brachyspira species in layer flocks. A total of 66 layer flocks kept in alternative husbandry systems were sampled at three time points: end of rearing, at peak of lay and at end of lay. Content from caecal samples of freshly killed birds was cultured at each sampling time point and processed for further investigations. Gross pathological lesions in caeca were recorded during post mortem investigation. Spirochaetes were isolated from 50 flocks: three flocks were positive at all three sampling points, 25 flocks at two and 22 flocks at one sampling point, respectively. The presence of Brachyspira spp. could not be related to specific gross pathological caecal lesions or antibiotic treatments. The number of positive flocks increased with the age of birds. Furthermore, organic flocks were more often positive than flocks from barn systems. In total 80 spirochaetal cultures were obtained. B. intermedia (43.8%) was the most common species, followed by B. pulli (13.8%) and B. pilosicoli (12.5%). Brachyspira murdochii and B. innocens were found in 5.0% and 2.5%, respectively, whereas 11.3% of Brachyspira isolates could not be identified to species level. In 11.3% of the samples mixed infections were detected. Finally, the longitudinal survey revealed for the first time a possible shift in the Brachyspira species in a substantial number (32%) of layer flocks during their lifetime.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths was investigated in sixty-six commercial non-caged layer flocks. Twenty-nine flocks were housed indoors in aviaries or floor systems, nineteen flocks were kept in conventional free-range systems with outdoor access, and eighteen flocks in organic free-range systems. Flocks were investigated at end of rearing (mean age 17 weeks), peak of egg production (mean age 38 weeks) and before slaughter (mean age 74 weeks). Four different methods were applied to determine worm infestation. During necropsies, worm infestations were recorded and mucosal scrapings were evaluated for the presence of worm eggs. Faecal samples from each flock were investigated by simple flotation method and McMaster counting technique. No gastrointestinal helminths were found in pullets. During production, 87.9 % of the layer flocks were infected with at least one nematode species at the peak of production. The prevalence further increased significantly up to 98.5 % at the end of production (p=0.05). This increase could be ascribed mainly to infections with Ascaridia (A.) galli and/or Heterakis (H.) gallinarum which were most prevalent in all husbandry systems. Furthermore, their prevalence increased significantly with the age of birds (p=0.023; p < 0.001). With regard to the husbandry system, the prevalence of Capillaria spp. was significantly higher in flocks from outdoor systems compared to flocks that were kept indoors. Cestodes were only detected at the end of production with a prevalence of 15.2 % and significantly more flocks with access to outdoor run were found positive. Interestingly, H. gallinarum was found with a high prevalence indoor and in outdoor systems. Anthelminthic treatment did not impact the prevalence of nematode infections. Comparing four different methods for the detection of helminths it was revealed that their efficiencies varied depending on the worm species. Overall, the simple flotation method was superior to detect A. galli and Capillaria spp. This method proved also very efficient for the detection of H. gallinarum but the additional evaluation of the worm infestation during necropsy increased the level of prevalence. Cestodes were mainly found during necropsies when the worm infestation was evaluated. The detection of parasite eggs in mucosal scrapings from the intestines was the least effective method for all helminths. These findings lead to the recommendation to combine faecal investigations with an evaluation of the worm infestation during necropsy of at least five birds.

A diverse supply of pollen is an important factor for honey bee health, but information about the pollen diversity available to colonies at the landscape scale is largely missing. In this COLOSS study, beekeeper citizen scientists sampled and analyzed the diversity of pollen collected by honey bee colonies. As a simple measure of diversity, beekeepers determined the number of colors found in pollen samples that were collected in a coordinated and standardized way. Altogether, 750 beekeepers from 28 different regions from 24 countries participated in the two-year study and collected and analyzed almost 18,000 pollen samples. Pollen samples contained approximately six different colors in total throughout the sampling period, of which four colors were abundant. We ran generalized linear mixed models to test for possible effects of diverse factors such as collection, i.e., whether a minimum amount of pollen was collected or not, and habitat type on the number of colors found in pollen samples. To identify habitat effects on pollen diversity, beekeepers' descriptions of the surrounding landscape and CORINE land cover classes were investigated in two different models, which both showed that both the total number and the rare number of colors in pollen samples were positively affected by 'urban' habitats or 'artificial surfaces', respectively. This citizen science study underlines the importance of the habitat for pollen diversity for bees and suggests higher diversity in urban areas.

In the present study 66 layer flocks housed in different alternative husbandry systems were monitored from placement of birds on the farm until slaughter to evaluate a possible influence on the occurrence of selected non-infectious as well as infectious diseases. Postmortems were performed and the occurrence of extraintestinal Escherichia coli and Gallibacterium anatis was investigated. No specific postmortem findings were seen in pullets. Non-infectious diseases were mainly found in layers. Most prominent postmortem findings in layers were reproductive tract lesions and the presence of intestinal helminths. From each flock E coli and from approximately 65 per centof the flocks G anatis were isolated. No significant differences were seen in regard to the housing system, but the prevalence of G anatis increased with the age of birds. The majority of reproductive tract lesions could be associated with E coli alone or G anatis co-infections. The prevalence of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum was not influenced by the housing system, but significantly increased with age. Cestodes were present in six flocks. Histomonosis was detected twice. Dermanyssus gallinae was found in 5 pullet and 20 layer flocks. Additional investigations were performed on demand. Again, reproductive tract lesions were the most prominent postmortem findings. In one flock each histomonosis or erysipelas was diagnosed, respectively. Severe affection by D gallinae was found once. Necrotic enteritis was seen in two layer flocks.

The health of honey bee colonies is, amongst others, affected by the amount, quality and diversity of available melliferous plants. Since landscape is highly diverse throughout Austria regarding the availability of nutritional resources, we used data from annual surveys on honey bee colony losses ranging over six years to analyse a possible relationship with land use. The data set comprises reports from a total of 6,655 beekeepers and 129,428 wintered honey bee colonies. Regions surrounding the beekeeping operations were assigned to one of six clusters according to their composition of land use categories by use of a hierarchical cluster analysis, allowing a rough distinction between urban regions, regions predominated by semi-natural areas and pastures, and mainly agricultural environments. We ran a Generalised Linear Mixed Model and found winter colony mortality significantly affected by operation size, year, and cluster membership, but also by the interaction of year and cluster membership. Honey bee colonies in regions composed predominantly of semi-natural areas, coniferous forests and pastures had the lowest loss probability in four out of six years, and loss probabilities within these regions were significantly lower in five out of six years compared to those within regions composed predominantly of artificial surfaces, broad-leaved and coniferous forest.

Clostridium chauvoei is a gram positive, spore building bacterium that causes blackleg, a mostly fatal disease in cattle and other ruminants. Although the disease is common, little is known on the epidemiology of blackleg. As infection occurs through the environment, the risk of blackleg might be increased in areas with a specific climate or soil type. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to identify spatial and temporal clusters in the incidence of blackleg in the province of Styria, Austria. Data were collected within the governmentally delivered blackleg control program which includes vaccination of cattle with access to known blackleg pastures and compensation for fallen stock. Between 1986 and 2013, 1448 suspect blackleg cases were reported to official veterinarians; with blackleg confirmed through bacteriology in 266 cases (18%). The number of confirmed blackleg cases was highest in 2011 (25 cases) and lowest in 2004 (2 cases). Mean annual blackleg incidences varied considerably between different municipalities from 0 cases in most of the Southern parts of the province to 584 cases/1,000,000 cattle in some Northwestern municipalities. The spatio-temporal analysis identified one high risk cluster in the Northwest where cattle had 9.56 times the risk to develop blackleg compared to those in Northern and Northeastern parts of the province. Furthermore, a low-risk cluster was identified in the southeastern part of the province, where cattle had a relative risk of 0.015 to die of blackleg. No temporal or spatio-temporal clusters were identified. Results of the present study suggest that blackleg cases are clustered within certain geographic areas which might be due to soil type and water permeability. Results of this study should be used to motivate farmers to vaccinate cattle against Clostridium chauvoei in known areas with high risk.

Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) leads to substantial economic losses in beef and dairy herds worldwide. Two case-control studies were carried out using production data from 1996 to 2012 to analyse the impact of BVD virus (BVDV) on fertility in dairy herds in the province of Styria during an eradication programme. In study 1, herds in which at least one persistently BVDV-infected (PI) animal was detected (case herds) were compared to a group of control herds proven free from BVDV infection (contro herds). In study 2, within BVD infected herds the period during which P animals were present (exposed period) was compared to the period after successful BVD eradication (unexposed period). Calving interval (CAl) and the probability of a first service conception (FSC) were used as indicators in a mixed regression model to investigate the impact of BVD on reproductive performance. The model results indicated that BVD had a significant influence on CAl and FSC. Cows from control herds were 1.1 times more likely to conceive at first service compared to cows from case herds and cows served during the BVDV unexposed period were 1.3 times more likely to conceive at first service than those inseminated during the exposed period. In BVD-infected herds the CAI averaged seven days shorter in unexposed periods than in exposed periods. Besides BVD the animal breed and the parity substantially impact the analysed fertility indicators.

According to regulation (EC) No. 854/2004 all pigs slaughtered in Austria are subject to a routine meat inspection at the slaughterhouse in order to detect pathological-anatomical organ alterations due to disease. This mandatory meat inspection constitutes an important contribution to ensure food safety and the resulting post-mortem findings provide a possibility to process optimization by reporting the routinely recorded results to the producers. We analyzed the impact of 18 post-mortem findings on the average daily net gain of 6119 pigs. All findings were recorded at an Austrian slaughterhouse within a quality assurance system. A linear mixed model (LMM) was applied incorporating the farm of origin as random effect in order to take non-observed farm specific risk factors (e. g. feed management, housing system, hygiene status) into account. As a result the expected average daily net gain of 490 g could be estimated and several post-mortem findings could be identified as significant factors (at the significance level 0.05) affecting the average daily net gain. The expected average daily net gain decreases significantly for pigs with at least one of the post-mortem findings arthritis (-64 g), abscess (-32 g), severe pneumonia (-13 g), visceralis pleuritis (-7 g) and hepatitis (-9 g). The expected average daily net gain increases by 5 g for pigs with post-mortem finding bursitis. The estimated random farm effect indicates the relevant impact of the farm environment on the average daily net gain. The results reinforce that there is still a great potential to improve efficiency in fattening, although the quality assurance system was implemented twelve years ago.
