RESUMO

This article discusses the possibility of plant decision making. We contend that recent work on bacteria provides a pertinent perspective for thinking about whether plants make choices. Specifically, the analogy between certain patterns of plant behaviour and apparent decision making in bacteria provides principled grounds for attributing decision making to the former. Though decision making is our focus, the discussion has implications for the wider issue of whether and why plants (and non-neural organisms more generally) are appropriate targets for cognitive abilities. Moreover, decision making is especially relevant to the issue of plant intelligence as it is commonly taken to be characteristic of cognition.

Plants offer a source of bioinspiration for soft robotics. Nevertheless, a gap remains in designing robots based on the fundamental principles of plant intelligence, rooted in a non-centralized, modular architecture and a highly plastic phenotype. We contend that a holistic approach to plant bioinspiration-one that draws more fully on the features of plant intelligence and behavior-evidences the value of an enactivist perspective. This is because enactivism emphasizes not only features of embodiment such as material composition and morphology, but also autonomy as an important aspect of plant intelligence and behavior. The enactivist sense of autonomy concerns the dynamics of self-producing systems (such as plants) that create a distinction between themselves and a domain of interactions that bear on the conditions of viability of the system. This contrasts with the widespread, but diluted notion of autonomy that merely indicates the independent operability of a system for an arbitrary period. Different notions of autonomy are relevant for soft roboticists, for instance, when evaluating limitations on existing growing robots ("growbots") that take bioinspiration from plants, but depend on a fixed source of energy and material provided by an external agent. More generally, plant-inspired robots serve as a case study for an enactivist approach to intelligence, while, correspondingly, enactivism calls attention to the possibility of non-zoological forms of intelligence embodied in a self-organizing, autonomous system.

PURPOSE: To promote consistency in clinical trials by recommending a uniform framework as it relates to radiation transport and dose calculation in water versus in medium. METHODS: The Global Quality Assurance of Radiation Therapy Clinical Trials Harmonisation Group (GHG; www.rtqaharmonization.org) compared the differences between dose to water in water (Dw,w), dose to water in medium (Dw,m), and dose to medium in medium (Dm,m). This was done based on a review of historical frameworks, existing literature and standards, clinical issues in the context of clinical trials, and the trajectory of radiation dose calculations. Based on these factors, recommendations were developed. RESULTS: No framework was found to be ideal or perfect given the history, complexity, and current status of radiation therapy. Nevertheless, based on the evidence available, the GHG established a recommendation preferring dose to medium in medium (Dm,m). CONCLUSIONS: Dose to medium in medium (Dm,m) is the preferred dose calculation and reporting framework. If an institution's planning system can only calculate dose to water in water (Dw,w), this is acceptable.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is an emerging technique for treating oligometastases, but limited data is available on what plan quality is achievable for a range of modalities and clinical sites. METHODS: SBRT plans for lung, spine, bone, adrenal, liver and node sites from 17 participating centers were reviewed. Centers used various delivery techniques including static and rotational intensity-modulation and multiple non-coplanar beams. Plans were split into lung and other body sites and evaluated with different plan quality metrics, including two which are independent of target coverage; "prescription dose spillage" (PDS) and "modified gradient index" (MGI). These were compared to constraints from the ROSEL and RTOG 0813 clinical trials. RESULTS: Planning target volume (PTV) coverage was compromised (PTV V100% < 90%) in 29% of patient plans in order to meet organ-at-risk (OAR) tolerances, supporting the use of plan quality metrics which are independent of target coverage. Both lung (n = 48) and other body (n = 99) site PDS values agreed well with ROSEL constraints on dose spillage, but RTOG 0813 values were too high to detect sub-optimal plans. MGI values for lung plans were mis-matched to both sets of previous constraints, with ROSEL values too high and RTOG 0813 values too low. MGI values were lower for other body plans as expected, though this was only statistically significant for PTV volumes <20 cm3. CONCLUSIONS: Updated guidance for lung and other body site SBRT plan quality using the PDS and MGI metrics is presented.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A UK national dosimetry audit was carried out to assess the accuracy of Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) lung treatment delivery. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This mail-based audit used an anthropomorphic thorax phantom containing nine alanine pellets positioned in the lung region for dosimetry, as well as EBT3 film in the axial plane for isodose comparison. Centres used their local planning protocol/technique, creating 27 SABR plans. A range of delivery techniques including conformal, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and Cyberknife (CK) were used with six different calculation algorithms (collapsed cone, superposition, pencil-beam (PB), AAA, Acuros and Monte Carlo). RESULTS: The mean difference between measured and calculated dose (excluding PB results) was 0.4±1.4% for alanine and 1.4±3.4% for film. PB differences were -6.1% and -12.9% respectively. The median of the absolute maximum isodose-to-isodose distances was 3mm (-6mm to 7mm) and 5mm (-10mm to +19mm) for the 100% and 50% isodose lines respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Alanine and film is an effective combination for verifying dosimetric and geometric accuracy. There were some differences across dose algorithms, and geometric accuracy was better for VMAT and CK compared with conformal techniques. The alanine dosimetry results showed that planned and delivered doses were within ±3.0% for 25/27 SABR plans.
