RESUMO

The propagation of surface plasma waves (SPWs) in 90 nm-thick Au films perforated with n × n square lattices of circular holes, referred to as n-metal photonic crystals (n-MPCs), is investigated. The hole period was set to 3 µm with n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 72. For each n-MPC, the total number of holes was conserved to 5184 (= 72 × 72), which were grouped to form an Mn × Mn (Mn = 72/n) array of lattices, evenly spaced on 384 × 384 µm2. The n-MPCs were individually integrated on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. In the transmission through them, the primary peak by the SPW excited at the n-MPC/GaAs interface exhibits clear variation with n in its wavelength and intensity. It begins to appear for n ∼ 4 and its intensity is increased with n but saturated for n∼ x> 36 with Fano lineshape. These imply the SPW excitation is significantly affected by the boundary and number of holes in each lattice. Such lattice size-dependent transmission is compared with the absorption of the quantum dot infrared photodetectors identically coupled to the n-MPCs. In the absorption, the saturation of the peak intensity is observed for n∼ x> 24, lower than the ∼36 in the transmission. Their difference is characterized with the SPW propagation and decay that critically depend on the dielectric properties of devices as well as the number of holes and boundaries of each lattice in plasmonic excitation.

RESUMO

We analyze the lineshape of the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) associated with surface plasma waves (SPWs) excited with a metal photonic crystal (MPC), an Au film perforated with a 2.6 µm period, two-dimensional array of holes, integrated atop a GaAs substrate. From its asymmetry by Fano interference between transmission mediated by SPWs and direct transmission through individual holes, the resonance energy of the fundamental SPW propagating along the MPC/GaAs interface is extracted as 138.8 meV. This energy, the reference of the analysis, is slightly higher than the energy of the apparent peak of the EOT but lower than that of the Rayleigh anomaly closely related to the direct transmission. Its accuracy is verified with an identical MPC integrated on a quantum dot infrared photodetector coupled to the same SPW. Additional lineshape parameters, including relative strength of the two pathways to the transmission and SPW broadening, are determined from experiments. A condition of the Fano interference for EOT, critical to the intensity of its peak transmission, is established with their relations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast arterial calcification (BAC) is a common incidental finding on screening mammography. Recent evidence suggests that BAC is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We systematically reviewed the associations between BAC and reproductive factors (menopausal status, hormone replacement therapy [HRT] use, oral contraceptive [OC] use and parity). METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, references of relevant papers and Web of Science were searched up to February 2020 for English-language studies that evaluated these associations. Study quality were determined and a random effects model was used to assess these associations. RESULTS: Nineteen observational studies (n = 47,249; three cohort studies, seven case-control studies, nine cross-sectional studies) were included. BAC was associated with menopause (nine studies; n = 15,870; odds ratio [OR] 2.67; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.50-4.77) and parity (seven studies; n = 27,728; OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.68-3.71) and inversely with HRT use (10 studies; n = 33,156; OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.40-0.80). No association was found with OC use. Eleven studies were considered good in quality. Marked heterogeneity existed across all analyses. CONCLUSIONS: BAC is associated with HRT use, menopause and parity. However, careful interpretation is required as marked heterogeneity existed across all analyses. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors may need to be taken into account in future investigations of associations between BAC and reproductive factors. PROSPERO: CRD42020141644.

RESUMO

A plasmonic-coupled, InAs-based quantum dot photodetector fabricated for mid-wave infrared photonics is reported. The detector is designed to provide a broadband absorption [full width at half maximum (FWHM) ≳ 2 µm] peaked at ∼5.5 µm, corresponding to transitions from the ground state of the quantum dot to the quasi-continuum resonance state above the quantum well. From the coupling of this transition to the surface plasma wave (SPW) excited by an Au film atop the detector, fabricated with a 1.5 µm-period, 2-dimensional array of square holes, a narrowband SPW enhancement peaked at 4.8 µm with an FWHM less than 0.5 µm is achieved. At ∼90 K, a peak responsivity enhanced ∼5× by the plasmonic coupling is observed. Simulation reveals that this enhancement corresponds to collecting ∼6% of the incident light; ∼40% of the total absorption by the SPW excitation at the peak wavelength.

RESUMO

In view of the planned new edition of the most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of primary breast cancer published in 2015, it was decided at the ESMO Asia Meeting in November 2018, by both the ESMO and the Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO), to convene a special face-to-face guidelines meeting in 2019 in Seoul. The aim was to adapt the latest ESMO 2019 guidelines to take into account the ethnic and geographical differences associated with the treatment of early breast cancer in Asian patients. These guidelines represent the consensus opinions reached by experts in the treatment of patients with early breast cancer representing the oncology societies of Korea (KSMO), China (CSCO), India (ISMPO) Japan (JSMO), Malaysia (MOS), Singapore (SSO) and Taiwan (TOS). The voting was based on scientific evidence, and was independent of both the current treatment practices, and the drug availability and reimbursement situations, in the individual participating Asian countries.

RESUMO

We report a measurement of the quantum efficiency for a surface plasma wave (SPW)-coupled InAs/In0.15Ga0.85As/GaAs dots-in-a-well (Dwell) quantum dot infrared photodetector (QDIP) having a single-color response at ∼10 µm. A gold film perforated with a square array of complex, non-circular apertures is employed to manipulate the near-fields of the fundamental SPW. The quantum efficiency is quantitatively divided into absorption efficiency strongly enhanced by the SPW, and collection efficiency mostly independent of it. In the absorption efficiency, the evanescent near-fields of the fundamental SPW critically enhances QDIP performance but undergoes the attenuation by the absorption in the Dwell that ultimately limits the quantum efficiency. For the highest quantum efficiency available with plasmonic coupling, an optimal overlap between Dwell and SPW near-fields is required. Based on experiment and simulation, the upper limit of the plasmonic enhancement in quantum efficiency for the present device is addressed.

RESUMO

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of stable or pseudostable highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collisions. Here we update our previous search for magnetic monopoles in Run 2 using the full trapping detector with almost four times more material and almost twice more integrated luminosity. For the first time at the LHC, the data were interpreted in terms of photon-fusion monopole direct production in addition to the Drell-Yan-like mechanism. The MoEDAL trapping detector, consisting of 794 kg of aluminum samples installed in the forward and lateral regions, was exposed to 4.0 fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHCb interaction point and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges equal to or above the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples. Monopole spins 0, ½, and 1 are considered and both velocity-independent and-dependent couplings are assumed. This search provides the best current laboratory constraints for monopoles with magnetic charges ranging from two to five times the Dirac charge.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare between deep neuromuscular blockade (NMB) and moderate NMB with respect to endoscopic surgical conditions and recovery profiles in patients with general anesthesia for transurethral resection of bladder (TURB). METHODS: 108 patients undergoing elective TURB were randomized into two groups: the moderate NMB (n = 54) or deep NMB (n = 54) group. After the operation, NMB was reversed with 2 mg/kg sugammadex at a train-of-four (TOF) count of 1 or 2 (moderate NMB group) or with 4 mg/kg sugammadex at post-tetanic count (PTC) of 2 (deep NMB group). Surgeons, who were blinded to the study design, rated the endoscopic surgical condition on a 5-point scale (1 = extremely poor, 2 = poor, 3 = acceptable, 4 = good, 5 = optimal) immediately following the operation. Recovery profiles, including postoperative residual curarization (PORC), respiratory complication, and recovery time, were recorded. RESULTS: No difference was observed between the two groups regarding patients and anesthesia characteristics. There were statistically significant differences in endoscopic surgical conditions between the two groups (P < 0.001). Thirty-eight patients in the deep NMB group (74%) showed optimal surgical conditions, whereas 16 patients in the moderate NMB group (30%) showed optimal endoscopic surgical conditions. No PORC and respiratory complications occurred in both groups, and no difference was found between the two groups in terms of recovery profiles, including recovery time and other adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Deep NMB and reversal with sugammadex improved the endoscopic surgical condition without complications compared with moderate NMB and reversal with sugammadex in patients undergoing TURB.

RESUMO

The initial stages of the nucleation of cubic (c-) GaN in heterophase epitaxy on a Si v-groove are investigated. Growth of GaN on a nanoscale {111}-faceted v-groove fabricated into a Si(001) substrate proceeds in the hexagonal (h-) phase that induces a secondary v-groove replicating the substrate topography with two opposing {0001} facets. The secondary v-groove is then orientationally mismatched at the junction of the h-GaN facets (h -h junction) resulting in structural instability. This instability is relieved either by the formation of voids that reduce the actual junction area or by the transition to c-phase (h-c transition) suppressing further extension of the h-h junction. The distribution of voids that is locally affected by the island growth mode of h-GaN on Si(111) and the imperfection in the groove geometry impacts the initial stage of heterophase epitaxy. Primarily, The h-c transition is observed as a non-local phenomenon; it occurs homogeneously and simultaneously along the bottom of the entire secondary groove and forms a one-dimensional (1D) seed layer except for some interruptions where the h-h junction is defected by gaps or incomplete voids. Between these interruptions, epitaxy retains a single crystal but results in a series of c-GaN nanodots on the seed layer with large fluctuation in size and spacing. The adatom incorporation observed in this heterophase epitaxy is a 1D analog to the wetting of a substrate followed by the self-assembly in conventional quantum dot epitaxy. The surface morphology of the c-GaN nanodots is governed by the faceting mostly composed of (001)- and (11n)-orientations and the roughening between these facets that ultimately affect the morphology of the final top surface of the c-III-N. The interruptions interfere with the homogeneity of the h-c transition and can cause antiphase defects and mosaicity. Based on experimental results, a solution to improve these issues is proposed.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a common type of atypical parkinsonism. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no study of its natural clinical course among Chinese patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included 21 patients with PSP who had radiological evidence of midbrain atrophy (confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging) from the geriatrics clinics of Queen Mary Hospital and Tuen Mun Hospital. Clinical information was retrieved from clinical records, including age at onset, age at presentation, age at death, duration of symptoms, level of education, sex, presenting scores on Cantonese version of Mini-Mental State Examination, clinical symptoms, and history of levodopa or dopamine agonist intake and response. Clinical symptoms were clustered into the following categories and the dates of development of these symptoms were determined: motor symptoms, bulbar symptoms, cognitive symptoms, and others. RESULTS: Motor symptoms developed early in the clinical course of disease. Cox proportional hazards modelling showed that the number of episodes of pneumonia, time to vertical gaze palsy, and presence of pneumonia were predictive of mortality. Apathy, dysphagia, pneumonia, caregiver stress, and pressure injuries were predictive of mortality when analysed as time-dependent covariates. There was a significant negative correlation between the age at presentation and time to mortality from presentation (Pearson correlation=-0.54, P=0.04). Approximately 40% of caregivers complained of stress during the clinical course of disease. CONCLUSION: Important clinical milestones, including the development of dysphagia, vertical gaze palsy, significant caregiver stress, pressure injuries, and pneumonia, may guide advanced care planning for patients with PSP.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We aim to study the diagnostic value of electrocardiogram (ECG) in cardiac tamponade. METHODS: This study was a single centre, retrospective casecontrol study. We recruited 42 patients diagnosed with cardiac tamponade of various aetiologies confirmed by transthoracic echocardiography and 100 controls between January 2011 and December 2015. The ECG criteria of cardiac tamponade we adopted was as follows: 1) Low QRS voltage in a) the limb leads alone, b) in the precordial leads alone or, c) in all leads, 2) PR segment depression, 3) Electrical alternans, and 4) Sinus tachycardia. RESULTS: Malignancy was the most common causes of cardiac tamponade, the two groups were of similar proportion of gender and ethnicity. We calculated the sensitivity (SN), specificity (SP), positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of each ECG criteria. Among the ECG abnormalities, we noted the SN of 'low voltage in all chest leads' (69%), 'low voltage in all limb leads' (67%) and 'sinus tachycardia' (69%) were higher as compared to 'PR depression' (12%) and 'electrical alternan' (5%). On the other hand, 'low voltage in all chest leads' (98%), 'low voltage in all leads' (99%), 'PR depression' (100%) and 'electrical alternans' (100%) has highest SP. CONCLUSION: Our study reaffirmed the findings of previous studies that electrocardiography cannot be used as a screening tool for diagnosing cardiac tamponade due to its low sensitivity. However, with clinical correlation, electrocardiography is a valuable adjuvant test to 'rule in' cardiac tamponade because of its high specificity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Various allergenic proteins are produced by house dust mites (HDM). However, the allergenicity and clinical implications of these allergens are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify allergens in Dermatophagoides farinae and elucidate the sensitization profiles to these in Korean patients suffering from respiratory (allergic rhinitis and/or asthma) and atopic dermatitis symptoms. METHODS: IgE reactivities in sera from 160 HDM allergy patients were analysed by one- and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. IgE-reactive components were identified by liquid chromatography-coupled electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. Nine recombinant mite allergens (Der f 1, Der f 2, Der f 10, Der f 11, Der f 13, Der f 14, Der f 30, Der f 32 and Der f Alt a 10) were produced, and the IgE reactivity in sera to each was determined by ELISAs. RESULTS: Der f 1 and Der f 2 were recognized by IgE in serum samples from 88.1% and 78.1% of all patients, respectively. Patients with respiratory allergies were mainly sensitized to these major allergens, whereas patients with atopic dermatitis symptoms showed polysensitization to major and minor allergen components (including Der f 11, Der f 13, Der f 14, Der f 32 and Der f Alt a 10). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with respiratory allergic disease sensitize to major allergen components of HDM. Those with atopic dermatitis were sensitized to a broader range of minor allergen components of HDM (Der f 11, Der f 13, Der f 14, Der f 32 and Der f Alt a 10).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little is known about factors affecting the quality of life (QoL) of patients with vitiligo, and previous studies have shown conflicting results. OBJECTIVES: To explore the QoL of patients with vitiligo and to identify factors affecting QoL. METHODS: A nationwide questionnaire-based study was conducted with 1123 patients with vitiligo recruited from 21 hospitals in Korea from July 2015 to June 2016. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire for demographic information and the Skindex-29 instrument. Mild or severely impaired QoL in patients with vitiligo was assessed according to each domain (symptoms, functioning and emotions) of Skindex-29. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with QoL. RESULTS: Of the enrolled participants, 609 were male and 514 female, with a mean age of 49·8 years (range 20-84). The median duration of disease was 3·0 years (range 0-60). Using multivariate logistic regression modelling, the involvement of visible body parts and a larger affected body surface area were consistently associated with QoL impairment in all three domains of Skindex-29. Additionally, the QoL of patients aged 20-59 years, who potentially had a more active social life than older patients, was associated with functional impairment. Furthermore, a higher educational background was associated with emotional impairment. CONCLUSIONS: A multitude of factors significantly influence the QoL of patients with vitiligo. A better appreciation of these factors would help the management of these patients.

RESUMO

Earth-abundant insulators are seldom exploited as photocatalysts. In this work, we constructed a novel family of insulator-based heterojunctions and demonstrated their promising applications in photocatalytic NO purification, even under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction formed between the insulator SrCO3 and the photosensitizer BiOI, via a special SrCO3-BiOI core-shell structure, exhibits an enhanced visible light absorbance between 400-600 nm, and an unprecedentedly high photocatalytic NO removal performance. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the covalent interaction between the O 2p orbital of the insulator (SrCO3, n-type) and the Bi 6p orbital of photosensitizer (BiOI, p-type) can provide an electron transfer channel between SrCO3 and BiOI, allowing the transfer of the photoexcited electrons from the photosensitizer to the conduction band of insulator (confirmed by charge difference distribution analysis and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy). The •O2- and •OH radicals are the main reactive species in photocatalytic NO oxidation. A reaction pathway study based on both in situ FT-IR and molecular-level simulation of NO adsorption and transformation indicates that this heterojunction can efficiently transform NO to harmless nitrate products via the NO → NO+ and NO2+ → nitrate or nitrite routes. This work provides numerous opportunities to explore earth-abundant insulators as visible-light-driven photocatalysts, and also offers a new mechanistic understanding of the role of gas-phase photocatalysis in controlling air pollution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite great advances in the development of hardware and software components, surgical navigation systems have only seen limited use in current clinical settings due to their reported complexity, difficulty of integration into clinical workflows and questionable advantages over traditional imaging modalities. OBJECTIVES: Development of augmented reality (AR) visualization for surgical navigation without the need for infrared (IR) tracking markers and comparison of the navigation system to conventional imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Novel navigation system combining a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) capable Carm with a red-green-blue depth (RGBD) camera. Testing of the device by Kirschner wire (K-wire) placement in phantoms and evaluation of the necessary operating time, number of fluoroscopic images and overall radiation dose were compared to conventional xray imaging. RESULTS: We found a significant reduction of the required time, number of fluoroscopic images and overall radiation dose in 3D AR navigation in comparison to xray imaging. CONCLUSION: Our AR navigation using RGBD cameras offers a flexible and intuitive visualization of the operating field for the navigated osteosynthesis without IR tracking markers, enabling surgeons to complete operations quicker and with a lower radiation exposure to the patient and surgical staff.

RESUMO

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of long-lived highly ionizing particles produced in high-energy LHC collisions. Its arrays of plastic nuclear-track detectors and aluminium trapping volumes provide two independent passive detection techniques. We present here the results of a first search for magnetic monopole production in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions using the trapping technique, extending a previous publication with 8 TeV data during LHC Run 1. A total of 222 kg of MoEDAL trapping detector samples was exposed in the forward region and analyzed by searching for induced persistent currents after passage through a superconducting magnetometer. Magnetic charges exceeding half the Dirac charge are excluded in all samples and limits are placed for the first time on the production of magnetic monopoles in 13 TeV pp collisions. The search probes mass ranges previously inaccessible to collider experiments for up to five times the Dirac charge.

RESUMO

This work demonstrates the first molecular-level conversion pathway of NO oxidation over a novel SrO-clusters@amorphous carbon nitride (SCO-ACN) photocatalyst, which is synthesized via copyrolysis of urea and SrCO3. The inclusion of SrCO3 is crucial in the formation of the amorphous carbon nitride (ACN) and SrO clusters by attacking the intralayer hydrogen bonds at the edge sites of graphitic carbon nitride (CN). The amorphous nature of ACN can promote the transportation, migration, and transformation of charge carriers on SCO-ACN. And the SrO clusters are identified as the newly formed active centers to facilitate the activation of NO via the formation of Sr-NOδ(+), which essentially promotes the conversion of NO to the final products. The combined effects of the amorphous structure and SrO clusters impart outstanding photocatalytic NO removal efficiency to the SCO-ACN under visible-light irradiation. To reveal the photocatalytic mechanism, the adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of NO over CN and SCO-ACN are analyzed by in situ DRIFTS, and the intermediates and conversion pathways are elucidated and compared. This work presents a novel in situ DRIFTS-based strategy to explore the photocatalytic reaction pathway of NO oxidation, which is quite beneficial to understand the mechanism underlying the photocatalytic reaction and advance the development of photocatalytic technology for environmental remediation.

RESUMO

AIMS: Evaluate the use of polyethyleneimines (PEIs) as membrane permeabilizers to improve the responses and sensitivity of a bacterial bioreporter strain to viologens. METHODS AND RESULTS: The responses from E. coli str. EBS, i.e., E. coli BW25113 carrying plasmid pSDS, when exposed to five different viologens were characterized, as were the toxicities of seven different PEIS, including two linear and five branched species. Based on these results, benzyl viologen led to the greatest responses, and 0·8-kDa branched PEI (BPEI) was the least toxic of the PEIs tested and, therefore, both were selected for the subsequent tests. The bioluminescence and relative responses from E. coli str. EBS exposed to various concentrations of 0·8 kDa BPEI identified 400 mg l-1 as the optimal concentration. Using this concentration, tests were performed with all five of the viologens. CONCLUSIONS: The responses from E. coli str. EBS to the viologens were improved, with the maximum relative bioluminescence values increasing between 5·6 and 16·5-fold. The minimum detectable levels for four of the viologens were likewise improved 2- to 4-fold. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: Improving bacterial membrane permeability in a controlled manner using BPEIs can improve biosensing of toxic compounds, as well as be used in biofuel and bioenergy applications where membrane permeability to a solute is important.

RESUMO

Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is considered as the technique in which a somatic cell is introduced into an enucleated oocyte to make a cloned animal. However, it is unavoidable to lose a small amount of the ooplasm during enucleation step during SCNT procedure. The present study was aimed to uncover whether the supplement of autologous ooplasm could ameliorate the oocyte competence so as to improve low efficiency of embryo development in porcine SCNT. Autologous ooplasm-transferred (AOT) embryos were generated by the supplementation with autologous ooplasm into SCNT embryos. They were comparatively evaluated with respect to embryo developmental potential, the number of apoptotic body formation and gene expression including embryonic lineage differentiation, apoptosis, epigenetics and mitochondrial activity in comparison with parthenogenetic, in vitro-fertilized (IVF) and SCNT embryos. Although AOT embryos showed perfect fusion of autologous donor ooplasm with recipient SCNT embryos, the supplement of autologous ooplasm could not ameliorate embryo developmental potential in regard to the rate of blastocyst formation, total cell number and the number of apoptotic body. Furthermore, overall gene expression of AOT embryos was presented with no significant alterations in comparison with that of SCNT embryos. Taken together, the results of AOT demonstrated inability to make relevant values improved from the level of SCNT embryos to their IVF counterparts.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Lewy body dementia includes dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia. There have been limited clinical studies among Chinese patients with Lewy body dementia. This study aimed to review the presenting clinical features and identify risk factors for complications including falls, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, pressure sores, and mortality in Chinese patients with Lewy body dementia. We also wished to identify any difference in clinical features of patients with Lewy body dementia with and without an Alzheimer's disease pattern of functional imaging. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients with Lewy body dementia supported by functional imaging. Baseline demographics, presenting clinical and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, functional and cognitive assessment scores, and complications during follow-up were reviewed. Patients with Lewy body dementia were further classified as having an Alzheimer's disease imaging pattern if functional imaging demonstrated bilateral temporoparietal hypometabolism or hypoperfusion with or without precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus hypometabolism or hypoperfusion. RESULTS: The pre-imaging accuracy of clinical diagnosis was 52%. In 83% of patients, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia were evident. Falls, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, pressure sores, and death occurred in 70%, 52%, 26%, 26%, and 30% of patients, respectively with corresponding event rates per person-years of 0.32, 0.17, 0.18, 0.08, and 0.10. Patients with aspiration pneumonia compared with those without were more likely to have dysphagia (100% vs 35%; P=0.01). Deceased patients with Lewy body dementia, compared with alive patients, had a higher (median [interquartile range]) presenting Clinical Dementia Rating score (1 [1-2] vs 0.5 [0.5-1.0]; P=0.01), lower mean (± standard deviation) baseline Barthel index (13 ± 7 vs 18 ± 4; P=0.04), and were more likely to be prescribed levodopa (86% vs 31%; P=0.03). Patients with Lewy body dementia with an Alzheimer's disease pattern of functional imaging, compared with those without the pattern, were younger at presentation (mean ± standard deviation, 73 ± 6 vs 80 ± 6 years; P=0.02) and had a lower Mini-Mental State Examination score at 1 year (15 ± 8 vs 22 ± 6; P=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Falls, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, and pressure sores were common among patients with Lewy body dementia. Those with an Alzheimer's disease pattern of functional imaging had a younger age of onset and lower 1-year Mini-Mental State Examination score.
