RESUMO

In this study, it is analyzed how sample geometry (spheres, nanofibers, or films) influences the graphitization behavior of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) molecules. The chemical bonding and changes in the composition of these three geometries are studied at the oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization stages via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in situ thermogravimetric-infrared (TGA-IR) analysis, elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of molecular alignment on the graphitization of the three sample geometries is investigated using synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of molecular alignment at different draw rates during spinning are explored in detail.

The effect of changes in immunosuppressive therapy during the acute phase post-heart transplantation (HTx) on clinical outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of changes in immunosuppressive therapy by corticosteroid (CS) weaning and everolimus (EVR) initiation during the first year post-HTx on clinical outcomes. We analyzed 622 recipients registered in the Korean Organ Transplant Registry (KOTRY) between January 2014 and December 2021. The median age at HTx was 56 years (interquartile range [IQR], 45-62), and the median follow-up time was 3.9 years (IQR 2.0-5.1). The early EVR initiation within the first year post-HTx and maintenance during the follow-up is associated with reduced the risk of primary composite outcome (all-cause mortality or re-transplantation) (HR, 0.24; 95% CI 0.09-0.68; p < 0.001) and cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) (HR, 0.39; 95% CI 0.19-0.79; p = 0.009) compared with EVR-free or EVR intermittent treatment regimen, regardless of CS weaning. However, the early EVR initiation tends to increase the risk of acute allograft rejection compared with EVR-free or EVR intermittent treatment.

BACKGROUND: As the prevalence of hypertension increases with age and the proportion of the older population is also on the rise, research on the characteristics of older hypertensive patients and the importance of frailty is necessary. This study aimed to identify clinical characteristics of older hypertension in Korea and to investigate these characteristics based on frailty status. METHODS: The HOW to Optimize eLDerly systolic BP (HOWOLD-BP) is a prospective, multicenter, open-label, randomized clinical trial that aims to compare intensive (target systolic blood pressure [SBP] ≤ 130 mmHg) with standard (target SBP ≤ 140 mmHg) treatment to reduce cardiovascular events in older hypertensive Korean patients aged ≥ 65 years. Data were analyzed through a screening assessment of 2,085 patients recruited from 11 university hospitals. Demographic, functional (physical and cognitive), medical history, laboratory data, quality of life, and medication history of antihypertensive drugs were assessed. RESULTS: The mean age was 73.2 years (standard deviation ± 5.60), and 48.0% (n = 1,001) were male. Prevalent conditions included dyslipidemia (66.5%), obesity (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m², 53.6%), and diabetes (28.9%). Dizziness and orthostatic hypotension were self-reported by 1.6% (n = 33) and 1.2% (n = 24), respectively. The majority of patients were on two antihypertensive drugs (48.4%), while 27.5% (n = 574) and 20.8% (n = 433) were on 1 and 3 antihypertensive medications, respectively. Frail to pre-frail patients were older and also tended to have dependent instrumental activities of daily living, slower gait speed, weaker grip strength, lower quality of life, and lower cognitive function. The frail to pre-frail group reported more dizziness (2.6% vs. 1.2%, P < 0.001) and had concerning clinical factors, including lower glomerular filtration rate, more comorbidities such as diabetes, stroke, and a history of admission. Frail to pre-frail older hypertensive patients used slightly more antihypertensive medications than robust older hypertensive patients (1.95 vs. 2.06, P = 0.003). Pre-frail to frail patients often chose beta-blockers as a third medication over diuretics. CONCLUSION: This study described the general clinical characteristics of older hypertensive patients in Korea. Frail hypertensive patients face challenges in achieving positive clinical outcomes because of multifactorial causes: they are older, have more morbidities, decreased function, lower quality of life and cognitive function, and take more antihypertensive medications. Therefore, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate and monitor disease-related or drug-related adverse events more frequently during regular check-ups, which is necessary for pre-frail to frail older patients with hypertension. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the relationship between heart failure knowledge, self-efficacy, social support, grit and self-care behaviour in patients with heart failure and to identify factors associated with patients' self-care behaviour. BACKGROUND: Most patients with heart failure are not as active in implementing self-care behavioural practices as recommended by the guidelines. DESIGN: This descriptive cross-sectional study was designed based on Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory. METHODS: This study included 138 patients who were diagnosed with heart failure in an outpatient department of cardiology at a tertiary hospital in Korea. Data were collected between July and October 2020 using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical records. Data were analysed using the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. RESULTS: Grit had the strongest association with self-care behaviour among patients with heart failure, followed by social support, self-efficacy and heart failure knowledge. These variables accounted for approximately 52% of the variance in self-care behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: Health-care professionals should assess patients' grit and develop patient-tailored grit enhancement programmes. Based on the social cognitive theory, nursing intervention programmes that can simultaneously manage cognitive (knowledge and self-efficacy), social and environmental (social support) and behavioural support (grit) factors should be developed and applied to nursing practices to promote self-care.

A barcode magnetic nanowire typically comprises a multilayer magnetic structure in a single body with more than one segment type. Interestingly, due to selective functionalization and novel interactions between the layers, it has attracted significant attention, particularly in bioengineering. However, analyzing the magnetic properties at the individual nanowire level remains challenging. Herein, the characterization of a single magnetic nanowire is investigated at room temperature under ambient conditions based on magnetic images obtained via wide-field quantum microscopy with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Consequently, critical magnetic properties of a single nanowire can be extracted, such as saturation magnetization and coercivity, by comparing the experimental result with that of micromagnetic simulation. This study opens up the possibility for a versatile in situ characterization method suited to individual magnetic nanowires.

Air pollution is a risk factor that increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In this study, we investigated the cardiotoxicity of particulate matter (PM) exposure using a zebrafish embryo model. We found that PM exposure induced cardiotoxicity, such as arrhythmia, during cardiac development. PM exposure caused cardiotoxicity by altering the expression levels of cardiac development (T-box transcription factor 20, natriuretic peptide A, and GATA-binding protein 4)- and ion-channel (scn5lab, kcnq1, kcnh2a/b, and kcnh6a/b)-related genes. In conclusion, this study showed that PM induces the aberrant expression of cardiac development- and ion channel-related genes, leading to arrhythmia-like cardiotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. Our study provides a foundation for further research on the molecular and genetic mechanisms of cardiotoxicity induced by PM exposure.

To investigate the molecular characteristics of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) detected in Gyeonggi Province from 2015/16 to 2017/18, 2331 specimens from patients with sporadic acute respiratory illness and 85 specimens from four HRSV outbreaks in the postpartum care center were analyzed by real-time reverse transcription PCR. HRSVs were detected in 97 of the 2416 (4.0%) specimens, and among the positive specimens, 38 (39.2%) were identified as HRSV-A and 59 (60.8%) as HRSV-B. During the study periods, HRSV-B predominated in all seasons, except in 2016/17 during which HRSV-A predominated. Depending on the age groups, HRSV prevalence was the highest in 0- to 2-year-old patients. Comparison of noninfected subjects with HRSV-infected subjects revealed that HRSV infection more frequently resulted in fever, nasal obstruction, and wheezing, although the frequency of sore throat was low; however, comparison of the symptoms between HRSV-A- and HRSV-B-infected patients revealed no significant differences in symptoms. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all HRSV-A patients had an ON1 genotype, and all HRSV-B patients had an BA9 genotype. These results provide a valuable reference regarding the circulating pattern and molecular characterization of HRSV. Continuous monitoring will be essential to detect newly emerging HRSV genotypes.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a multicomplex neurodegenerative disease, has multiple underlying pathological factors and can induce other neuromuscular diseases, leading to muscle atrophy and respiratory failure. Currently, there is no effective drug for treating patients with ALS. Herbal medicine, used to treat various diseases, has multitarget effects and does not usually induce side effects. Each bioactive component in such herbal combinations can exert a mechanism of action to increase therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we investigated the efficacy of an herbal formula, comprising Achyranthes bidentata Blume, Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, and Paeonia lactiflora Pallas, in suppressing the pathological mechanism of ALS in male hSOD1G93A mice. Herbal formula extract (HFE) (1 mg/g) were orally administered once daily for six weeks, starting at eight weeks of age, in hSOD1G93A transgenic mice. To evaluate the effects of HFE, we performed footprint behavioral tests, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry to detect protein expression and quantitative PCR to detect mRNA levels in the muscles and spinal cord of hSOD1G93A mice. HFE-treated hSOD1G93A mice showed increased anti-inflammation, antioxidation, and regulation of autophagy in the muscles and spinal cord. Thus, HEF can be therapeutic candidates for inhibiting disease progression in patients with ALS. This study has some limitations. Although this experiment was performed only in male hSOD1G93A mice, studies that investigate the efficacy of HEF in various ALS models including female mice, such as mice modeling TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP43) and ORF 72 on chromosome 9 (C9orf72) ALS, are required before it can be established that HEF are therapeutic candidates for patients with ALS.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a known gaseous bioactive substance found across a wide array of body systems. The administration of low concentrations of CO has been found to exert an anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-hypertensive, and vaso-dilatory effect. To date, however, it has remained unknown whether CO influences atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion. This study explores the effect of CO on ANP secretion and its associated signaling pathway using isolated beating rat atria. Atrial perfusate was collected for 10 min for use as a control, after which high atrial stretch was induced by increasing the height of the outflow catheter. Carbon monoxide releasing molecule-2 (CORM-2; 10, 50, 100 µM) and hemin (HO-1 inducer; 0.1, 1, 50 µM), but not CORM-3 (10, 50, 100 µM), decreased high stretch-induced ANP secretion. However, zinc porphyrin (HO-1 inhibitor) did not affect ANP secretion. The order of potency for the suppression of ANP secretion was found to be hemin > CORM-2 >> CORM-3. The suppression of ANP secretion by CORM-2 was attenuated by pretreatment with 5-hydroxydecanoic acid, paxilline, and 1H-[1,2,4] oxadiazolo [4,3-a] quinoxalin-1-one, but not by diltiazem, wortmannin, LY-294002, or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester. Hypoxic conditions attenuated the suppressive effect of CORM-2 on ANP secretion. In sum, these results suggest that CORM-2 suppresses ANP secretion via mitochondrial KATP channels and large conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels.

PURPOSE: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an effective predictor of mortality in patients with various conditions. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no previous studies on the NLR as a prognostic marker for small bowel obstruction (SBO), especially on admission to the emergency department (ED). METHODS: From January 2009 to December 2018, 653 patients diagnosed with SBO in the ED were included. Clinical and laboratory results, including the NLR, were evaluated as variables. The NLR was calculated as follows: NLR = absolute neutrophil count/absolute lymphocyte count. To evaluate SBO prognosis, data on hospital mortality and intensive care unit (ICU) admission were obtained. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were performed. RESULTS: Among the 653 patients, 16 (2.4%) died and 35 (5.3%) were admitted to the ICU during hospitalization. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated the NLR as an independent factor for predicting death (odds ratio, 1.3; p = 0.017]); however, there was no statistical significance for ICU admission (p = 0.94). The NLR showed good predictive performance for in-hospital mortality (area under the ROC curve, 0.768 [95% confidence interval, 0.620-0.861]; cut-off value, 10.6; p = 0.018). CONCLUSION: The NLR was positively associated with poor SBO prognosis. An elevated NLR was an independent predictive factor for in-hospital mortality in SBO patients. Emergency physicians should consider the NLR for SBO prognosis, and timely, aggressive, and prompt treatment is required, especially in patients with an NLR >10.6.

INTRODUCTION: Acute gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is one of the most important and the common causes of patients visiting the emergency department. Dehydrated state leads to increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and decreased albumin level. Many scoring systems had been developed to predict outcomes for patients with GI bleeding. Among the many scoring systems, the AIMS65 score was a simple and accurate risk assessment scoring tool. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the prognostic performance of the blood urea nitrogen to serum albumin ratio (B/A ratio) compared to the AIMS65 score tool in elderly patients with GI bleeding. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with GI bleeding in our institution from February 2018 through May 2020. Baseline characteristic data were obtained. The data were compared with the prevalence of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality. The B/A ratio and the AIMS65 score as predictors of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. RESULTS: In the 596 patients included in the study, of whom 188 (31.5%) were admitted to the ICU and 36 (6.0%) died during hospitalization. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the B/A ratio was significant predictors of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality. In addition, the B/A ratio was significant higher in ICU admission patients and non-survivors. The AUROC value of the B/A ratio was 0.682 and that of the AIMS65 score was 0.699 for predicting ICU admission. For predicting in-hospital mortality, the AUROC value was 0.770 and 0.763, respectively. CONCLUSION: The B/A ratio is as simple and useful tool for predicting outcomes for old aged GI bleeding patients as the AIMS65 score.

INTRODUCTION: Early prediction of patients' prognosis in the emergency department (ED) is important. Patients' conditions such as dehydration help predict prognosis. The ratio of serum blood urea nitrogen to creatinine (BUN/Cr ratio) and inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter is often used to determine dehydration. Also, serum albumin levels reflect nutritional conditions such as dehydration. In this study, we evaluated the performance of BUN/Cr ratio, IVC diameter ratio, and BUN/Albumin ratio as predictive markers for in-hospital mortality and ICU admission among various diseases in ED. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized data from patients who had abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (APCT) performed at our institution from 2015 to 2018. The measurement of IVC diameter from computed tomography, the BUN/Cr ratio, and the BUN/Albumin ratio were calculated. Differences in the performance among the BUN/Cr ratio, the IVC diameter ratio, and the BUN/Albumin ratio for predicting outcomes were evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. RESULTS: A total of 914 patients were enrolled and 78 patients (8.5%) were admitted to the ICU, and 71 patients (7.8%) died during the clinical process. Multivariate logistic regression showed that only the BUN/Albumin ratio was a significant predictor of inhospital mortality and ICU admission. CONCLUSION: Among dehydration markers the BUN/Albumin ratio is a simple and useful tool for predicting the outcomes of patients visiting the ED.

The detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in upper and lower respiratory specimens and coinfection with other respiratory pathogens in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was investigated. Study subjects (N = 342) were retrospectively enrolled after being confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 positive, and their nasopharyngeal swab (NPS), oropharyngeal swab (OPS), and sputum specimens were restored for SARS-CoV-2 retesting and respiratory pathogen detection. The majority of the subjects (96.5%, N = 330) were confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 positive using NPS/OPS specimens. Among the COVID-19 patients (N = 342), 7.9% (N = 27) and 0.9% (N = 3) were coinfected with respiratory viruses and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, respectively, yielding an 8.8% (N = 30) overall respiratory pathogen coinfection rate. Of the respiratory virus coinfection cases (N = 27), 92.6% (N = 25) were coinfected with a single respiratory virus and 7.4% (N = 2) with two viruses (metapneumovirus/adenovirus and rhinovirus/bocavirus). No triple coinfections of other respiratory viruses or bacteria with SARS-CoV-2 were detected. Respiratory viruses coinfected in the patients with COVID-19 were as follows: rhinovirus (N = 7, 2.1%), respiratory syncytial virus A and B (N = 6, 1.8%), non-SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses (229E, NL63, and OC43, N = 5, 1.5%), metapneumovirus (N = 4, 1.2%), influenza A (N = 3, 0.9%), adenovirus (N = 3, 0.9%), and bocavirus (N = 1, 0.3%). In conclusion, the diagnostic value of utilizing NPS/OPS specimens is excellent, and, as the first report in Korea, coinfection with respiratory pathogens was detected at a rate of 8.8% in patients with COVID-19.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a two-dimensional (2D) MX2Y2-type (M = metal, X, Y = N, S, O, and X ≠ Y) copper 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-benzenetriol metal-organic framework (Cu3(TABTO)2-MOF). The role of oxygen in the synthesis of this MOF was investigated. Copper metal is formed along with the MOF when the synthesis is done in argon as suggested by XRD. When the reaction was exposed to air with vigorous stirring, copper metal was not observed by XRD. However, if there is no stirring, then copper metal is formed, and we learned that this is because oxygen was not allowed to enter the solvent due to the formation of a MOF film at the air/water interface. For the sample synthesized in argon (Cu3(TABTO)2-Ar), an insulating Cu3(TABTO)2-Ar pellet (σ < 10-10 S cm-1) became a metallic conductor with an electrical conductivity of 0.78 S cm-1 at 300 K after exposure to iodine vapor. This work provides further insights into the role of oxygen in the synthesis of redox-active ligand-based MOFs, expands the family of 2D redox-active ligand-based electrically conductive MOFs, and offers more opportunities in sensing, photocatalytic, electronic, and energy-related applications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of point-of-care knee ultrasonography (POCUS) compared with knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tears in patients with acute knee trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in a tertiary hospital emergency department; acute (within 1-week) knee trauma patients with suspected ACL or PCL tear were recruited. Two POCUS performers (a board-certified emergency physician and a musculoskeletal radiologist) independently evaluated the ACL and PCL using POCUS. Findings were classified as normal appearance or ligament tear. Final radiology reports of knee MRI were used as the reference standard. We calculated the diagnostic values (sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy) for POCUS obtained by both POCUS performers. Kappa values (k) were calculated for inter-observer agreement between the two POCUS performers. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients were enrolled. Compared with the reference standard, POCUS showed acceptable sensitivity (90.6-100%), specificity (90.0-97.7%), and accuracy (91.9-96.8%). Inter-observer agreement between the two POCUS performers was excellent (k = 0.853-0.903). CONCLUSION: POCUS demonstrates excellent precision as compared to MRI in the diagnosis of ACL and PCL tears. The findings of POCUS could be used for immediate diagnosis and further pre-operative imaging in patients with acute knee trauma.

BACKGROUND: Difficult cannulation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is associated with increased complications; therefore, its prediction is important. PURPOSE: To identify radiologic risk factors of difficult cannulation during ERCP based on computed tomography (CT) findings and to develop a predictive model for a difficult cannulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 171 patients with native papilla who underwent both enhanced CT and ERCP were recruited. Two radiologists independently measured the distal common bile duct (CBD) diameter and choledochoduodenal (CD) angle and analyzed CT images for presence of CBD stone and papilla bulging, size and type of periampullary diverticulum (PAD), and duodenal segment in which major papilla was located. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and decision-tree analysis were performed to identify risk factors for difficult cannulation. RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients underwent a difficult cannulation. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a smaller CBD diameter, presence of papilla bulging, location of the major papilla other than the descending duodenum, a smaller CD angle, and a higher worrisome PAD score were statistically relevant factors for difficult cannulation (P < 0.049). In the decision-tree analysis, a higher worrisome PAD score was the strongest predictor of difficult cannulation, followed by the presence of papilla bulging, smaller CD angle, and a smaller CBD diameter. The predictive model had an 82.5% overall predictive accuracy. CONCLUSION: The CT findings-based decision-tree analysis model showed a high accuracy in predicting cannulation difficulty and may be helpful for making pre-ERCP strategy.

OBJECTIVES: Facial bone fractures secondary to head trauma are more common in children than in adults. Recently, multidetector row computed tomography (CT) has been considered superior to conventional radiography. Some studies have reported that facial soft tissue injuries require both facial and brain CT and that brain CT is helpful in screening facial bone fractures. However, these studies included only adult patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of brain CT and the need for additional facial CT to detect facial bone fractures in emergency pediatrics. METHODS: This multicenter study was conducted retrospectively in 2 tertiary hospitals in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The data were collected from the medical records of pediatric patients younger than 8 years who had undergone both brain and facial CT on the same day in the emergency department. All CT scans were retrospectively and independently evaluated by 1 board-certified radiologist and 1 board-certified emergency medicine physician. A P value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Sensitivity was 92.31%, specificity was 100%, positive predictive value was 100%, negative predictive value was 99.31%, and accuracy was 99.36% for the emergency physician; all parameters were 100% for the radiologist. CONCLUSIONS: Brain CT showed high diagnostic performance to detect facial bone fractures with high accuracy in pediatric patients. As emergency physicians, we should consider facial bone fractures when reviewing brain CT images of pediatric patients with blunt head and face trauma.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a two-dimensional (2D) conjugated Ni(II) tetraaza[14]annulene-linked metal organic framework (NiTAA-MOF) where NiTAA is a macrocyclic MN4 (M = metal, N = nitrogen) compound. The structure of NiTAA-MOF was elucidated by Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray photoemission, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopies, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. When chemically oxidized by iodine, the insulating bulk NiTAA-MOF (σ < 10-10 S/cm) exhibits an electrical conductivity of 0.01 S/cm at 300 K, demonstrating the vital role of ligand oxidation in the electrical conductivity of 2D MOFs. Magnetization measurements show that iodine-doped NiTAA-MOF is paramagnetic with weak antiferromagnetic coupling due to the presence of organic radicals of oxidized ligands and high-spin Ni(II) sites of the missing-linker defects. In addition to providing further insights into the origin of the induced electrical conductivity in 2D MOFs, both pristine and iodine-doped NiTAA-MOF synthesized in this work could find potential applications in areas such as catalase mimics, catalysis, energy storage, and dynamic nuclear polarization-nuclear magnetic resonance (DNP-NMR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. It is widely known that prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is highly expressed in prostate cancer, and hypoxia is a common characteristic of many solid tumors, including prostate cancer. In this study, we designed multifunctional fluorescent inhibitors to target PSMA and tumor hypoxia in order to increase the tumor uptake of inhibitors. Novel PSMA inhibitors were prepared using lysine as the backbone to connect three different functional groups: the glutamate-urea-lysine (GUL) structure for inhibiting PSMA, 2-nitroimidazole for the hypoxia-sensitive moiety, and a near-infrared fluorophore (sulfo-Cyanine 5.5). According to the in vitro PSMA binding assay, novel fluorescent inhibitors were demonstrated to have nanomolar binding affinities. Multifunctional inhibitor 2 with one 2-nitroimidazole had a similar inhibitory activity to inhibitor 1 that did not contain the hypoxia targeting moiety, but multifunctional inhibitor 3 with two 2-nitroimidazoles showed lower inhibitory activity than inhibitor 1 due to the bulky structure of the hypoxia-sensitive group. However, in vivo optical imaging and ex vivo biodistribution studies indicated that both multifunctional inhibitors 2 and 3 had higher accumulation in tumors than inhibitor 1 due to a synergistic combination of PSMA and hypoxia targeting moieties. These observations suggest that this novel multifunctional strategy might be a promising approach to improve the diagnosis and therapy of prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that will aid in the diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder (ACS) and provide a summary of the diagnostic accuracy of the identified features METHODS: The MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies assessing the diagnostic accuracy of MRI features of ACS. Overlapping descriptors used to denote the same imaging finding in different studies were subsumed under a single feature. The pooled accuracy including the diagnostic odd ratios (DORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the identified features was calculated using a bivariate random-effects model. RESULTS: In total, 15 studies were included, and 74 overlapping descriptors were subsumed under six features. All six features were found to be informative for ACS diagnosis [coracohumeral ligament thickening: DOR, 13; 95% CI, 6-29; fat obliteration of the rotator interval (RI): DOR, 8; 95% CI, 3-24; RI enhancement: DOR, 44; 95% CI, 14-141; axillary joint capsule enhancement: DOR, 52; 95% CI, 27-98; inferior glenohumeral ligament (IGHL) hyperintensity: DOR, 31; 95% CI, 8-115; IGHL thickening: DOR, 28; 95% CI, 11-70]. The sensitivity and specificity of enhancement of the RI and axillary joint capsule and IGHL hyperintensity were > 80%. CONCLUSIONS: Six informative MRI features for ACS diagnosis were identified in this study with RI and axillary joint capsule enhancement and IGHL hyperintensity showing the highest diagnostic accuracy. Informative features observed on non-arthrogram MRI can be as helpful as features observed on direct magnetic resonance arthrography for ACS diagnosis. KEY POINTS: • Six informative MRI features for ACS diagnosis were identified (diagnostic odds ratio > 1). • RI and axillary joint capsule enhancement and IGHL hyperintensity showed high sensitivities/specificities (> 80%). • The use of non-arthrogram MRI is recommended for ACS diagnosis.
