RESUMO

For the discrete spectrum nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (DS-NFDM) 16/64 amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) system, the inevitable laser impairments including frequency offset (FO) and carrier phase noise (CPN) would cause different rotations of the received signal constellations. In addition, the combined effect of FO and amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) noise induces the eigenvalue shift, accordingly the residual channel impairment (RCI) is inevitably yielded. To address the above problems, we deduce the joint impairment model of FO, CPN and RCI, and then propose a joint equalization scheme using two-stage cascaded extended Kalman filter (TSC-EKF) for these impairments. It performs frequency offset compensation in the first stage, subsequently carries out joint equalization of CPN and RCI in the second stage. Meanwhile, the minimum Euclidean distance and phase difference between the received symbols and the ideal 16/64APSK constellations are ingeniously fused to calculate the innovations of TSC-EKF. The effectiveness has been verified by 2 GBaud DS-NFDM 16/64 APSK simulations and DS-NFDM 16APSK transmission experiments. The results demonstrate that when performing the joint equalization of FO, CPN and RCI, the maximum FOE range of TSC-EKF scheme achieves 1.2 and 9.6 times as that of nonlinear frequency domain (NFD) scheme and fast Fourier transform -Like (FFT-Like) scheme, respectively. Furthermore, its maximum LW tolerance reaches 3.3 times as that of the M-th power scheme. Importantly, the complexity of TSC-EKF is 63.4% as that of NFD scheme and on an order of O(N).

BACKGROUND: Pyranoanthocyanins are stable anthocyanin derivatives. Carboxylpyranoanthocyanin is one of the simplest pyranoanthocyanin, among which the production of carboxylpyranocyanidin-3-O-glucoside (crboxyl-pycy-3-gluc) is most feasible as a result of the abundance of its reactant, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy-3-gluc). RESULTS: In the present study, carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc was synthesized and its stability during processing and after ingestion as well as its bioavailability in vivo were comprehensively evaluated. Our results indicated that the color of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc remained more stable compared to Cy-3-gluc when facing the large-span pH variation. The high retention of anthocyanin symbolized the superb stability under thermal processing, sulfur dioxide bleaching and ultrasonic treatment of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc. Because of the stability under the alkaline condition, carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc is more stable after oral-gastrointestinal digestion. After in vitro gut microbiota fermentation, the retention of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc was significantly higher than that of Cy-3-gluc. The larger molecular size made absorption of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc into blood more difficult than its precursor. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated the promising stability of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc during food processing and after digestion, confirming the potential of carboxyl-pycy-3-gluc as a colorant. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Diminished ovarian reserve has a serious impact on female reproduction with an increasing incidence every year. An important cause of this is oxidative stress. Rubi fructus, a traditional medicinal and edible plant, has shown therapeutic effects against gynecological diseases. Vanillic acid, isoquercitrin, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, kaempferol-3-O-sophoroside, oleanolic acid, tormentic acid, tiliroside, and ellagic acid are the major bioactive components in R. fructus. However, studies involved in the effectiveness and mechanism of these components in oxidative stress-induced ovarian dysfunction are scarce. RESULTS: In this study, the protective mechanisms of the bioactive components were evaluated in human ovarian granulosa cells. Isoquercitrin was significantly superior to other bioactive components in relieving damage in human ovarian granulosa cells induced by 2,2-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride, considering enhanced cell viability, reduced reactive oxygen species accumulation, and improved mitochondrial membrane potential level. Isoquercitrin protected human ovarian granulosa cells from oxidative stress by regulating the enzyme activity of glutathione peroxidase, inhibiting cell apoptosis, improving the expression of genes related to oxidative stress, and ameliorating heme oxygenase 1 protein expression. CONCLUSION: Isoquercitrin, a bioactive component in R. fructus, has a significant protective effect on oxidative damage induced by 2,2-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride in human ovarian granulosa cells, providing evidence for its potential application in protecting ovarian function. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Foodborne contaminants refer to substances that are present in food and threaten food safety. Due to the progress in detection technology and the rising concerns regarding public health, there has been a surge in research focusing on the dangers posed by foodborne contaminants. These studies aim to explore and implement strategies that are both safe and efficient in mitigating the associated risks. Anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids, are abundantly present in various plant species, such as blueberries, grapes, purple sweet potatoes, cherries, mulberries, and others. Numerous epidemiological and nutritional intervention studies have provided evidence indicating that the consumption of anthocyanins through dietary intake offers a range of protective effects against the detrimental impact of foodborne contaminants. The present study aims to differentiate between two distinct subclasses of foodborne contaminants: those that are generated during the processing of food and those that originate from the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the impact of anthocyanins on foodborne contaminants was also summarized based on a review of articles published within the last 10 years. However, further investigation is warranted regarding the mechanism by which anthocyanins target foodborne contaminants, as well as the potential impact of individual variations in response. Additionally, it is important to note that there is currently a dearth of clinical research examining the efficacy of anthocyanins as an intervention for mitigating the effects of foodborne pollutants. Thus, by exploring the detoxification effect and mechanism of anthocyanins on foodborne pollutants, this review thereby provides evidence, supporting the utilization of anthocyanin-rich diets as a means to mitigate the detrimental effects of foodborne contaminants.

Androgen is a kind of steroid hormone that plays a vital role in reproductive system and homeostasis of the body. Disrupted androgen balance serves as the causal contributor to a series of physiological disorders and even diseases. Flavonoids, as an extremely frequent family of natural polyphenols, exist widely in plants and foods and have received great attention when considering their inevitable consumption and estrogen-like effects. Mounting evidence illustrates that flavonoids have a propensity to interfere with androgen synthesis and metabolism, and also have a designated improvement effect on androgen disorders. Therefore, flavonoids were divided into six subclasses based on the structural feature in this paper, and the literature about their effects on androgens published in the past ten years was summarized. It could be concluded that flavonoids have the potential to regulate androgen levels and biological effects, mainly by interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, androgen synthesis and metabolism, androgen binding with its receptors and membrane receptors, and antioxidant effects. The faced challenges about androgen regulation by flavonoids masterly include target mechanism exploration, individual heterogeneity, food matrixes interaction, and lack of clinical study. This review also provides a scientific basis for nutritional intervention using flavonoids to improve androgen disorder symptoms.

Vehicle type and brand information constitute a crucial element in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). While numerous appearance-based classification methods have studied frontal view images of vehicles, the challenge of multi-pose and multi-angle vehicle distribution has largely been overlooked. This paper proposes an appearance-based classification approach for multi-angle vehicle information recognition, addressing the aforementioned issues. By utilizing faster regional convolution neural networks, this method automatically captures crucial features for vehicle type and brand identification, departing from traditional handcrafted feature extraction techniques. To extract rich and discriminative vehicle information, ZFNet and VGG16 are employed. Vehicle feature maps are then imported into the region proposal network and classification location refinement network, with the former generating candidate regions potentially containing vehicle targets on the feature map. Subsequently, the latter network refines vehicle locations and classifies vehicle types. Additionally, a comprehensive vehicle dataset, Car5_48, is constructed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, encompassing multi-angle images across five vehicle types and 48 vehicle brands. The experimental results on this public dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in accurately classifying vehicle types and brands.

Xiong'an New Area is defined as the future city of China, and the regulation of water resources is an important part of the scientific development of the city. Baiyang Lake, the main supplying water for the city, is selected as the study area, and the water quality extraction of four typical river sections is taken as the research objective. The GaiaSky-mini2-VN hyperspectral imaging system was executed on the UAV to obtain the river hyperspectral data for four winter periods. Synchronously, water samples of COD, PI, AN, TP, and TN were collected on the ground, and the in situ data under the same coordinate were obtained. A total of 2 algorithms of band difference and band ratio are established, and the relatively optimal model is obtained based on 18 spectral transformations. The conclusion of the strength of water quality parameters' content along the four regions is obtained. This study revealed four types of river self-purification, namely, uniform type, enhanced type, jitter type, and weakened type, which provided the scientific basis for water source traceability evaluation, water pollution source area analysis, and water environment comprehensive treatment.

Pyranoanthocyanins have been reported to possess better chemical stability and bioactivities than monomeric anthocyanins in some aspects. The hypocholesterolemic activity of pyranoanthocyanins is unclear. In view of this, this study was conducted to compare the cholesterol-lowering activities of Vitisin A with the anthocyanin counterpart Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside(C3G) in HepG2 cells and to investigate the interaction of Vitisin A with the expression of genes and proteins associated with cholesterol metabolism. HepG2 cells were incubated with 40 µM cholesterol and 4 µM 25-hydroxycholeterol with various concentrations of Vitisin A or C3G for 24 h. It was found that Vitisin A decreased the cholesterol levels at the concentrations of 100 µM and 200 µM with a dose-response relationship, while C3G exhibited no significant effect on cellular cholesterol. Furthermore, Vitisin A could down-regulate 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis through a sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2)-dependent mechanism, and up-regulate low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and blunt the secretion of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) protein to promote intracellular LDL uptake without LDLR degradation. In conclusion, Vitisin A demonstrated hypocholesterolemic activity, by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis and enhancing LDL uptake in HepG2 cells.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used for the evaluation of knee injuries, however, the accuracy of MRI in classifying multiple ligament knee injuries (MLKIs) remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of MRI in diagnosing and classifying acute traumatic MLKIs, we hypothesize that MRI had high accuracy in detecting and classifying MLKIs. METHODS: The clinical data of 97 patients who were diagnosed with acute traumatic MLKIs and managed by multi-ligament reconstruction between 2012 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The MR images were read by two experienced radiologists and results were compared with intraoperative findings, which were considered as the reference for the identification of injured structures. The value of MRI in detecting injuries of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL), and meniscus was evaluated by calculating the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and kappa coefficients analysis. The value of MRI in classifying MLKIs was evaluated by calculating the agreement between MRI and intraoperative findings. RESULTS: For detecting the specific injured structures in MLKIs, MRI had high sensitivity (90.7% for ACL, 90.4% for PCL, and moderate specificity (63.6% for ACL, 50% for PCL) in detecting cruciate ligament injuries, moderate sensitivity (79.1% for MCL, 55.6% for LCL) and specificity (46.7% for MCL, 68.4% for LCL) in detecting collateral ligament injuries, fair sensitivity (61.5%) and low specificity (39.4%) in the diagnosis of injuries to the meniscus. For classifying the MIKIs, MRI had a moderate agreement with intraoperative findings in classifying KD-V (kappa value = 0.57), poor agreement in the KD-I (kappa value = 0.39) and KD-IIIM (kappa value = 0.31), meaningless in the KD-II and KD-IIIL (kappa value < 0). The overall agreement between MRI and intraoperative findings in classifying MLKIs was poor (kappa value = 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: MRI is valuable in early detection and diagnosis of acute MLKIs, however, the accuracy of MRI in classifying MLKIs is limited. The management of MLKIs should be based on intraoperative findings, physical examinations, and comprehensive imaging results.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental endocrine disruptor. Recent studies have shown an association between decreased spermatogenesis and gut microbiota alteration. However, the potential associations and mechanisms of BPA exposure on spermatogenesis, hormone production, and gut microbiota remain unknown. This study aims to investigate BPA-induced male reproductive toxicity and the potential link with gut microbiota dysbiosis. Male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to BPA at different doses by oral gavage for thirty consecutive days. The extent of testicular damage was evaluated by basic parameters of body weight and hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. Next, we determined the mRNA levels and protein levels of apoptosis, histone-related factors, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in testes. Finally, 16 S rDNA sequencing was used to analyze gut microbiota composition after BPA exposure. BPA exposure damaged testicular histology, significantly decreased sperm count, and increased sperm abnormalities. In addition, BPA exposure caused oxidative stress and cell apoptosis in testes. The levels of histone (H2A, H3) were significantly increased, while ubiquitin histone H2A (ub-H2A) and ubiquitin histone H2B (ub-H2B) were markedly reduced. Furthermore, BPA activated the PI3K and AKT expression, but the protein expressions of mTOR and 4EBP1 in testes were inhibited significantly. Additionally, the relative abundance of class Gammaproteobacteria, and order Betaproteobacteriales was significantly higher when treated with a high dose of BPA compared to the control group, which was negatively correlated with testosterone level. This study highlights the relationship between BPA-induced reproductive toxicity and gut microbiota disorder and provides new insights into the prevention and treatment of BPA-induced reproductive damage.

Currently, the cryopreservation of human spermatozoa must overcome the adverse effects of excessive oxidation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of cryopreservation medium with cyanidin-3-Ο-glucoside (C3G) on sperm quality. Semen samples were obtained from men with normozoospermia according to WHO criteria (n = 39). The sperm parameter values were compared after cryopreservation in medium supplemented with and without C3G.Compared with the control group (without additive), low doses (50 µM and 100 µM) of C3G improved sperm viability and motility and decreased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) of spermatozoa, while high doses (200 µM) of C3G did not obviously enhance sperm quality. The amount of DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and high DNA stainability (HDS) after freezing were higher in the control group than in the C3G supplementation groups. Low-concentration C3G supplementation (50 µM) was negatively correlated with sperm ROS levels (r = -0.2, p = 0.03). Collectively, our findings suggest that C3G could be an efficient semen cryoprotectant that ameliorates oxidative stress in human sperm during cryopreservation.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a globally utilized industrial chemical and is commonly used as a monomer of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Recent research reveals that BPA could cause potential adverse biological effects and liver dysfunction. However, the underlying mechanisms of BPA-induced hepatoxicity and gut dysbiosis remain unclear and deserve further study. In this study, male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to different doses (0, 30, 90, and 270 mg/kg bw) of BPA by gavage for 30 days. The results showed that the high dose of BPA decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Moreover, a high dose of BPA caused a significant increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly decreased in BPA-treated rats. The gene expression of PGC-1α and Nrf1 were decreased in the liver of high doses of BPA-administrated rats, as well as the protein levels of SIRT1, PGC-1α, Nrf2, and TFAM. However, the protein expression of IL-1ß was significantly increased in BPA-treated rats. In addition, BPA weakened the mitochondrial function of hepatocytes and promoted cell apoptosis in the liver by up-regulating the protein levels of Bax, cleaved-Caspase3, and cleaved-PARP1 while down-regulating the Bcl-2 in the liver. More importantly, a high dose of BPA caused a dramatic change in microbiota structure, as characterized at the genus level by increasing the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B), and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in feces, while decreasing the relative abundance of Prevotella_9 and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014, which is positively correlated with the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In summary, our data indicated that BPA exposure caused hepatoxicity through apoptosis and the SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway. BPA-induced intestinal flora and SCFA changes may be associated with hepatic damage. The results of this study provide a new sight for the understanding of BPA-induced hepatoxicity.

Various security threats are encountered when keys are transmitted in public channels. In this paper, we propose an image encryption algorithm based on complex network scrambling and multi-directional diffusion. Combining the idea of public key cryptography, the RSA algorithm is used to encrypt the key related to plaintext. The algorithm consists of three stages: key generation stage, complex network scrambling stage, and multi-directional diffusion stage. Firstly, during the key generation phase, SHA-512 and the original image are used to generate plaintext-related information, which is then converted to plaintext-related key through transformation mapping. Secondly, in the complex network scrambling stage, the chaotic random matrix establishes the node relationships in the complex network, which is then used to construct an image model based on the complex network, and then combines pixel-level and block-level methods to scramble images. Finally, in the multi-directional diffusion stage, the multi-directional diffusion method is used to perform forward diffusion, middle spiral diffusion, and backward diffusion on the image in turn to obtain the final ciphertext image. The experimental results show that our encryption algorithm has a large keyspace, the encrypted image has strong randomness and robustness, and can effectively resist brute force attack, statistical attack, and differential attack.

Elevated circulating levels of ceramides (Cers) are associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases, and Cers may play a causative role in metabolic dysfunction that precedes cardiac events, such as mortality as a result of coronary artery disease. Although the mechanisms involved are likely complex, these associations suggest that lowering circulating Cer levels could be protective against cardiovascular diseases. Conversely, dietary fibers, such as inulin, have been reported to promote cardiovascular and metabolic health. However, the mechanisms involved in these protective processes also are not well understood. We studied the effects of inulin on lipid metabolism with a model of atherosclerosis in LDL receptor-deficient mice using lipidomics and transcriptomics. Plasma and tissues were collected at 10 days and/or 12 weeks after feeding mice an atherogenic diet supplemented with inulin or cellulose (control). Compared with controls, inulin-fed mice displayed a decreased C16:0/C24:0 plasma Cer ratio and lower levels of circulating Cers associated with VLDL and LDL. Liver transcriptomic analysis revealed that Smpd3, a gene that encodes neutral SMase (NSMase), was downregulated by 2-fold in inulin-fed mice. Hepatic NSMase activity was 3-fold lower in inulin-fed mice than in controls. Furthermore, liver redox status and compositions of phosphatidylserine and FFA species, the major factors that determine NSMase activity, were also modified by inulin. Taken together, these results showed that, in mice, inulin can decrease plasma Cer levels through reductions in NSMase expression and activity, suggesting a mechanism by which fiber could reduce cardiometabolic disease risk.

Hypercapnia in combination with hypoxemia is usually present in severe respiratory disease in the intensive care unit (ICU) and can lead to more severe cognitive dysfunction. Increasing evidence has indicated that the compromised blood-brain barrier (BBB) in the hippocampus in hypoxemia conditions can result in cognitive dysfunction. However, the role and underlying mechanism of hypercapnia in the BBB disruption remains poorly known. A rat model of hypercapnia was first established in this study by intubation and mechanical ventilation with a small-animal ventilator. After this, the cognitive function of the experimental rats was assessed by the Morris water maze test. The BBB permeability was evaluated by the Evans Blue (EB) test and brain water content (BWC). Western blot analysis was carried out to detect the protein expressions of total and nuclear hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), matrixmetalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and Aquaporins-4 (AQP-4) in the hippocampus tissue. Double immunofluorescence further verified the protein expression of different biomarkers was localized in the astrocytes of the hippocampus. Hypercapnia alone did not disrupt the BBB, but it could further enhance the BBB permeability in hypoxemia. Concomitantly, up-regulation of nuclear HIF-1α, AQP-4, MMP-9 protein expression along with increased degradation of the occludin and claudin-5 proteins was found in the hypercapnia rat model, while the total HIF-1α remained unchanged. Interestingly, these changes were independent of the acidosis induced by hypercapnia. Of note, after premedication of 2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME2, an inhibitor of HIF-1α nuclear translocation), the disrupted BBB could be restored resulting in improvement of the cognitive impairment. Meanwhile, accumulation of nuclear HIF-1α, protein expression of AQP-4 and MMP-9 and protein degradation of the occludin and claudin-5 were decreased. Thus, our study demonstrated that hypercapnia can further disrupt the BBB through promoting HIF-1α nuclear translocation and up-regulation of AQP-4 and MMP-9 in hypoxemia. It is therefore suggested that the cascade of hypercapnia-induced nuclear HIF-1α protein translocation in hypoxia-activated astrocytes may be a potential target for ameliorating cognitive impairment.

The tumor is becoming a critical threat to our lives in these years. Searching for antitumor substances from natural products is a great interest of scientists. Cudrania tricuspidata (C. tricuspidata) is a regional plant containing 158 flavonoids and 99 xanthones, and others ingredients with favorable bioactivity. This review comprehensively analyzes the antitumor compounds from C. tricuspidata against different tumors, and 78 flavonoids plus xanthones are considered as underlying antineoplastic. Importantly, the structure of preylation groups is the primary source of antitumor activity among 45 flavonoids plus xanthones, which could be a direction of structural modification for a better antitumor ability. Additionally, the fruits are also preferable sources of antitumor compounds compared to the roots and barks due to the abundant isoflavones and sustainability. However, many studies only focused on the cells viability inhibition of the compounds, the underlying molecular mechanisms, and the intracellular targets remain ambiguous. In conclusion, C. tricuspidata has a great potential for anti-tumor prevention or therapy, but more attention should be paid to deeper research in vitro and in vivo models.

BACKGROUND: Natural killer (NK) cells play a major role in immune tolerance after sepsis, and the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) system mediates evasion of host immunity. The correlation between PD-L1 levels in NK cells and the prognosis of patients with sepsis, however, has not been elucidated. Thus, it was hypothesized that PD-L1 in NK cells could be a novel biomarker of the mortality for sepsis patients. METHODS: A prospective, observational, cohort study in a general intensive care unit had earlier enrolled patients according to the sepsis-3 criteria, and peripheral blood samples were collected within 24 h post-recruitment. The expression of four co-signaling molecules (PD-1, CD28, PD-L1, and CD86) in NK cells was assayed, and the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores were recorded on day 1. Patients were followed up until 28 days. Multivariate regression analysis assessed the independent risk factors for 28-day mortality. The association between biomarkers and 28-day mortality was assessed by Cox regression survival analysis. The accuracy of biomarkers for mortality was determined by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) analysis. RESULTS: A total of 269 patients were recruited, and 114 patients were finally included for final analysis. Of these, 30 (26.3%) patients died during 28 days. The percentage of PD-L1+ NK cells (OR 1.022; 95% CI 1.002-1.043) and SOFA scores (OR 1.247; 95% CI 1.092-1.424) were independent risk factors for 28-day mortality. The AUC of the percentage of PD-L1+ NK cells, SOFA scores, and their combination model were 0.655 (0.559-0.742), 0.727 (0.635-0.807) and 0.808 (0.723-0.876), respectively. The combination model was the indicator with the best AUC to predict mortality in 28 days (all p < 0.05). Patients with the percentage of PD-L1+ NK cells above the cutoff point 5.58% (hazard ratio (HR) 10.128 (1.372-74.772), p = 0.001), and the combination model prediction possibility above 0.1241 (HR 13.730 (3.241-58.158), p < 0.001) were the indexes that had greater discriminative capacity to predict 28 days mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The percentage of PD-L1+ NK cells at admission serves as a novel prognostic biomarker for predicting mortality and contributes to improve the predictive capacity of SOFA score in patients with sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Microbes have been shown to play a crucial role in various ecosystems. Many human diseases have been proved to be associated with bacteria, so it is essential to extract the interaction between bacteria for medical research and application. At the same time, many bacterial interactions with certain experimental evidences have been reported in biomedical literature. Integrating this knowledge into a database or knowledge graph could accelerate the progress of biomedical research. A crucial and necessary step in interaction extraction (IE) is named entity recognition (NER). However, due to the specificity of bacterial naming, there are still challenges in bacterial named entity recognition. RESULTS: In this paper, we propose a novel method for bacterial named entity recognition, which integrates domain features into a deep learning framework combining bidirectional long short-term memory network and convolutional neural network. When domain features are not added, F1-measure of the model achieves 89.14%. After part-of-speech (POS) features and dictionary features are added, F1-measure of the model achieves 89.7%. Hence, our model achieves an advanced performance in bacterial NER with the domain features. CONCLUSIONS: We propose an efficient method for bacterial named entity recognition which combines domain features and deep learning models. Compared with the previous methods, the effect of our model has been improved. At the same time, the process of complex manual extraction and feature design are significantly reduced.

Metabolic syndrome develops to several related chronic diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. Diseases are outcomes of various cells dysfunction, which are especially acting with a network in metabolic syndrome. Anthocyanins are natural edible pigments widely existed in dark-colored fruits, vegetables, and grains. Epidemiological investigation and nutritional intervention of anthocyanins have exhibited broad-spectrum biological effects that they can benefit patients with metabolic syndrome related chronic diseases. Whereas the underlying mechanisms and the effects of anthocyanins on critical cells in chronic metabolic diseases are complex and elusive. Therefore, this review summarizes the studies about the effects of anthocyanins on various metabolism related chronic diseases, and mainly focuses on the effects and underlying molecular mechanisms on critical cells. We confirmed that anthocyanins are efficient on adipocytes, endothelial cells, inflammatory cells, hepatocytes, intestinal cells and gut microbiota, but lack of evidence on platelets, skeletal muscle cells, hepatic stellate cells and pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, we discussed the structure-function relationship of anthocyanins and the metabolites. This review summarizes the development of studies on anthocyanins with its target cells in metabolic syndrome, and discusses the unclear aspects of the anthocyanins research work, which is necessary for the future clinical application.

BACKGROUND: The treatment for unstable intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly has always been a controversial issue. The aim in this study was to compare the curative effects of proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA) and cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty (CPH) on femoral intertrochanteric fracture in the elderly. METHODS: From March 2008 to December 2012, 108 elderly patients with femoral intertrochanteric fractures were treated by PFNA or CPH. There were 63 males and 45 females, aged 75.3-99.1 years [(83.7 ± 5.6) years]. The patients' bone mineral density was routinely measured, and the fractures were classified according to Evans-Jensen. The patients were divided into CPH group and PFNA group. The differences in operation time, intraoperative bleeding, immobilization duration, hospitalization time, Harris scores and postoperative complications including deep venous thrombosis, lung and urinary infection were analyzed. RESULTS: All patients were followed for 12.5-36.2 months [(28.0 ± 6.3) months)]. The operation time was (53.7 ± 15.2) min and (77.5 ± 16.8) min in PFNA group and CPH group, respectively (P < 0.05); intraoperative bleeding was (132.5 ± 33.2) mL and (286.3 ± 43.2) mL, respectively (P < 0.05); immobilization duration was (28.2 ± 3.7) days and (3.1 ± 1.2) days, respectively (P < 0.05); hospitalization time was (7.6 ± 1.8) days and (6.9 ± 2.2) days, respectively (P > 0.05); and the Harris scores after 1 year were (87.7 ± 7.9) points and (88.3 ± 9.2) points, respectively (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both PFNA and CPH are safe and effective treatments for femoral intertrochanteric fracture in elderly patients. Nonetheless, CPH allows faster mobilization and recovery.
