RESUMO

An in-situ laser Doppler current probe (LDCP) for the simultaneous measurements of the micro-scale subsurface current speed and the characterizations of micron particles is dedicated in this paper. The LDCP performs as an extension sensor for the state-of-the-art laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The all-fiber LDCP utilized a compact dual wavelength (491 nm and 532 nm) diode pumped solid state laser as the light source to achieve the simultaneous measurements of the two components of the current speed. Besides its ability for the measurements of the current speed, the LDCP is also capable of obtaining the equivalent spherical size distribution of the suspended particles within small size range. The micro-scale measurement volume formed by two intersecting coherent laser beams makes it possible to accurately estimate the size distribution of the micron suspended particles with high temporal and spatial resolution. With its deployment during the field campaign at Yellow Sea, the LDCP has been experimentally demonstrated as an effective instrument to capture the micro-scale subsurface ocean current speed. The algorithm for retrieving the size distribution of the small suspended particles (2∼7.5µm) has been developed and validated. The combined LDCP system could be applied to the continuous long-term observations of plankton community structure, ocean water optical parameter over a wide range, and useful to elucidate the processes and interactions of the carbon cycles in the upper ocean.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the echocardiographic characteristics of primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma (PPM) due to its rarity. The aim of this study was to explore the sex-specific echocardiographic patterns of PPM and risk factors for in-hospital mortality. METHODS: A retrospective information retrieval was conducted for cases of PPM reported from China during 1981 and 2015. The diagnosis was made by histopathological examinations and only cases with echocardiographic descriptions were included. Data on the clinical and echocardiographic findings were collected. Difference in clinical, sex-specific echocardiographic characteristics and findings across different time periods were assessed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore echocardiographic risk factors for in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: A total of 64 patients with PPM were included, with a mean age of 39.2 ± 15.6 years and minor male dominance (40, 62.5%). The most common echocardiographic presentations were pericardial effusion (55, 85.9%), pericardial masses (36.4%) and thickening (17.3%), respectively. The positive rate of pericardiocentesis was only 20.9%. Six patients (15.4%) died among 39 cases reporting in-hospital outcome. Logistics analysis identified no clinical or echocardiographic parameters associated with in-hospital mortality (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The echocardiographic signs of PPM are basically nonspecific with massive pericardial effusion as the most common sign, although no echocardiographic gender differences or association with in-hospital mortality could be identified.

RESUMO

Guar gum is considered as a main component of oilfield wastewater. This work is intended to optimize the experimental conditions (H2O2 dosage, Fe2+ dosage, initial concentration of organics, initial pH and temperature) for the maximum oxidative degradation of guar gum by Fenton's reagent. The kinetics of guar gum removal were evaluated by means of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the absorbance measurements. The batch experiment results showed that the optimum conditions were: H2O2 dosage, 10,000 mg/L; Fe2+dosage, 2,000 mg/L; initial concentration of organics, 413 mg/L; pH, 3 and temperature, 35 °C, under which the COD removal could reach 61.07% and fairly good stability could be obtained. Under the optimum experimental conditions, using UV irradiation to treat the wastewater, the photo-Fenton systems can successfully eliminate COD from guar gum solution. The COD removal always obeyed a pseudo-first-order kinetics and the degradation rate (kapp) was increased by 25.7% in the photo-Fenton process compared to the Fenton process. The photo-Fenton system needed less time and consequently less quantity of H2O2 to obtain the same results as the Fenton process. The photo-Fenton process needs a dose of H2O2 20.46% lower than that used in the Fenton process to remove 79.54% of COD. The cost of the photo/Fenton process amounted to RMB9.43/m3, which was lower than that of the classic Fenton process alone (RMB10.58/m3) and the overall water quality of the final effluent could meet the class Ι national wastewater discharge standard for the petrochemical industry of China.
