BACKGROUND: In people with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) receiving imatinib and achieving major molecular response (MMR), dose reduction may decrease adverse events but may be associated with a loss of molecular response. Whether digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) can identify persons in whom dose reduction might be unsuccessful is unknown. METHODS: Data from 716 consecutive subjects who achieved MMR after initial imatinib therapy (400 mg/day) were obtained. A total of 486 subjects remained on full-dose imatinib, whereas 230 subjects had their dose reduced to 300 or 200 mg/day. The outcomes of these cohorts were compared via landmark and propensity score matching analyses. RESULTS: Imatinib dose reduction showed no significant effect on the subsequent achievement of deeper molecular responses (4- and 4.5-log reductions in BCR::ABL1 transcripts; MR4 and MR4.5), maintenance of MMR, or attainment of therapy-free remission when compared with subjects without dose reduction. In subjects achieving MR4, however, the probability of maintaining MR4 (p = .002) was lower in the reduced-dose group. In multivariable analyses, failure to achieve MR4.5 as determined by ddPCR at the time of dose reduction was significantly associated with briefer MMR failure-free survival (FFS; hazard ratio [HR], 10.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-82.9; p = .03) and MR4 FFS (HR, 6.8; 95% CI, 2.6-18.0; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Imatinib dose reduction after achieving MMR does not adversely affect response deepening or MMR maintenance in chronic-phase CML but compromises MR4 maintenance. The results of ddPCR may identify people who benefit from imatinib dose reduction.

The application of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and novel immunotherapies has improved outcomes in patients with Ph + acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), and the issue of whether there is still a need for stem cell transplantation has become controversial. We performed a retrospective study to explore whether stem cell transplantation still held a place in patients with Ph + ALL if only imatinib and 2nd generation TKIs are available and affordable. A total of 292 patients were included. The median age was 38 years [range 14-64, IQR 28-48]. Patients receiving transplants (n = 216) had better rates of 4-year disease-free survival (DFS, 68% vs. 24%, P < .0001) and overall survival (OS, 72% vs. 47%, P < .0001) than those receiving continuous TKIs plus chemotherapy (TKI-chemo) (n = 76). In the multivariate analysis, male sex, WBC count ≥ 95 × 109/L and PLT count ≤ 154 × 109/L at diagnosis were significantly associated with poorer outcomes, and transplantation was significantly associated with favourable DFS and OS. In addition, the transplant outcomes were superior in any subgroup according to the number of risk variables. Furthermore, propensity score matching (PSM) analyses showed similar findings in the whole cohort and in age- and BCR-ABL1 level-based subgroups after the first or second consolidation. In conclusion, transplantation as a one-time procedure for adults with Ph + ALL patients remains important in countries lacking accessibility to third-generation TKIs or immunotherapies, regardless of the depth of the molecular response.

BACKGROUND: Patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) are occasionally positive for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs). Differences between ILDs secondary to microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and isolated ANCA-positive idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the differences in clinical features and outcomes between MPA-associated ILDs and isolated ANCA-positive IIPs. METHODS: We reviewed 1338 ILDs patients with available ANCA results and retrospectively analysed 80 patients who were ANCA-positive. MPA-associated ILDs (MPA-ILDs group) and isolated ANCA-positive IIPs (ANCA-IIPs group) were compared. RESULTS: Among 80 patients with ANCA-positive ILDs, 31 (38.75%) had MPA-ILDs, and 49 (61.25%) had isolated ANCA-positive IIPs. Compared with ANCA-IIPs group, patients in MPA-ILDs group had a higher proportion of fever (p = 0.006) and higher neutrophil count (p = 0.011), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (p < 0.001) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (p = 0.005). Multivariable analysis showed that ESR level was an independent risk factor for mortality in all 80 ANCA-positive ILDs patients (HR 1.028, p = 0.001). Survival in MPA-ILDs group was lower than that in ANCA-IIPs group, and further stratified analysis revealed that ANCA-IIPs patients with elevated ESR or CRP had a worse prognosis than those with normal inflammation markers, with 5-year cumulative survival rates of 60.00%, 86.90% and 100.00% in MPA-ILDs and ANCA-IIPs with and without elevated inflammation markers, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with ANCA-positive ILDs, the prognoses of ANCA-IIPs with normal inflammation markers, ANCA-IIPs with elevated inflammation markers and MPA-ILDs were sequentially poorer. Therefore, stratified treatment should be considered in the management of ILDs patients positive for ANCAs.

Monosomal karyotype (MK) is associated with poor prognosis in patients with myeloid neoplasms; however, its prognostic significance in Philadelphia chromosome-negative (Ph-negative) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) remains unclear. Data of 323 patients with Ph-negative ALL treated at Peking University People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. MK was identified in 49 (14.8%) patients. The patients with MK had lower hemoglobin levels (P = 0.026), lower platelet count (P = 0.032), higher percentages of blasts in the peripheral blood at diagnosis (P = 0.008), and higher percentages of high-risk karyotypes (P < 0.001) compared with those without MK. The complete remission (CR) rate and the minimal residual disease negativity rate were not significantly different between patients with and without MK. In the multivariate analysis, MK was identified as an independent factor associated with higher cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR) (hazard ratio (HR), 2.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.02, 4.21; P = 0.043), shorter disease-free survival (DFS) (HR, 2.80; 95% CI, 1.20, 6.54; P = 0.017) and shorter overall survival (OS) (HR, 5.75; 95% CI, 2.07, 16.03; P = 0.001) in the chemotherapy cohort; however, MK had no impact on outcomes in the allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) cohort. Mantel-Byar analysis showed that allo-HSCT was associated with lower CIR (P < 0.001), longer DFS (P < 0.001), and longer OS (P < 0.001) in CR patients with MK. In conclusion, our study showed that MK was an independent predictor of poor outcomes in patients with Ph-negative ALL receiving chemotherapy but not allo-HSCT, and allo-HSCT could improve the outcomes of patients with MK.

The prognostic significance of Wilms' tumor gene 1 (WT1) expression at diagnosis in adults with B cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) remains poorly understood. A total of 257 adults with Ph-negative BCP-ALL who were consecutively diagnosed and received at least 1 course of induction therapy at our institute were retrospectively analyzed. The WT1 expression patterns were significantly different among the molecularly and cytogenetically defined groups (E2A-PBX1, TEL-AML1, and MLL rearrangements; high hyperdiploidy and B-other). By considering the WT1 expression pattern and the relapse status, 2 cutoff values, 1.8% and 7.2%, were arbitrarily selected to place patients into WT1-low, WT1-inter, and WT1-high groups. In the B-other patients who achieved complete remission (CR), WT1-low and WT1-high patients had similar 3-year relapse-free survival (RFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) rates, which were all significantly lower than those of WT1-inter patients. The combined WT1-low/high expression group (n = 132) had significantly lower 3-year RFS, DFS, and OS rates compared with the WT1-inter group (n = 63) of B-other patients (RFS and DFS all P < 0.0001; OS P = 0.0018 and 0.0008). WT1 low/high expression as well as treating with chemotherapy only was independent poor prognostic factors for RFS, DFS, and OS in the B-other patients who achieved CR. Therefore, the molecularly and cytogenetically defined adult Ph-negative BCP-ALL groups have characteristic WT1 expression patterns, and WT1 low/high expression at diagnosis predicts poor outcome in B-other patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is still one of the most severe complications in immunocompromised patients. Our previous systematic review showed noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) reduced mortality, length of hospitalization and ICU stay in AIDS/hematological malignancy patients with relatively less severe ARF, compared to invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). However, this systematic review was based on 13 observational studies and the quality of evidence was low to moderate. The efficacy of NIV in more severe ARF and in patients with other causes of immunodeficiency is still unclear. We aim to determine the efficacy of the initial ventilation strategy in managing ARF in immunocompromised patients stratified by different disease severity and causes of immunodeficiency, and explore predictors for failure of NIV. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The VENIM is a multicentre randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing the effects of NIV compared with IMV in adult immunocompromised patients with severe hypoxemic ARF. Patients who meet the indications for both forms of ventilatory support will be included. Primary outcome will be 30-day all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes will include in-hospital mortality, length of stay in hospital, improvement of oxygenation, nosocomial infections, seven-day organ failure, adverse events of intervention, et al. Subgroups with different disease severity and causes of immunodeficiency will also be analyzed. DISCUSSION: VENIM is the first randomized controlled trial aiming at assessing the efficacy of initial ventilation strategy in treating moderate and severe acute respiratory failure in immunocompromised patients. BACKGROUND: To determine the effects of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) compared with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) as the initial mechanical ventilation on clinical outcomes when used for treatment of acute respiratory failure (ARF) in immunocompromised patients. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) and other databases. Subgroup analyses by disease severity and causes of immunodeficiency were also conducted. RESULTS: Thirteen observational studies with a total of 2552 patients were included. Compared to IMV, NIV was shown to significantly reduce in-hospital mortality (OR 0.43, 95 % CI 0.23 to 0.80, P value = 0.007) and 30-day mortality (OR 0.34, 95 % CI 0.20 to 0.61, P value < 0.0001) in overall analysis. Subgroup analysis showed NIV had great advantage over IMV for less severe, AIDS, BMT and hematological malignancies patients in reducing mortality and duration of ICU stay. CONCLUSIONS: The overall evidence we obtained shows NIV does more benefits or at least no harm to ARF patients with certain causes of immunodeficiency or who are less severe.

Ultrasound imaging and ultrasound-mediated gene and drug delivery are rapidly advancing diagnostic and therapeutic methods; however, their use is often limited by the need for microbubbles, which cannot transverse many biological barriers due to their large size. Here, the authors introduce 50-nm gas-filled protein nanostructures derived from genetically engineered gas vesicles(GVs) that are referred to as 50 nmGVs. These diamond-shaped nanostructures have hydrodynamic diameters smaller than commercially available 50-nm gold nanoparticles and are, to the authors' knowledge, the smallest stable, free-floating bubbles made to date. 50 nmGVs can be produced in bacteria, purified through centrifugation, and remain stable for months. Interstitially injected 50 nmGVs can extravasate into lymphatic tissues and gain access to critical immune cell populations, and electron microscopy images of lymph node tissues reveal their subcellular location in antigen-presenting cells adjacent to lymphocytes. The authors anticipate that 50 nmGVs can substantially broaden the range of cells accessible to current ultrasound technologies and may generate applications beyond biomedicine as ultrasmall stable gas-filled nanomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) is a type of autoantibodies associated with vasculitis. ANCA positivity is commonly observed in interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients. 7%-10% of ANCA-positive ILD patients don't present any symptoms of systemic vasculitis and are termed ANCA-positive idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (ANCA-IIP). Some researchers propose that ANCA-IIP should be categorized as interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF), although the official ATS/ERS statements exclude ANCA-IIP from this classification. Whether ANCA-IIP should be categorized into the entity of IPAF is still debatable. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with ANCA-IIP and those with IPAF were analyzed in a retrospective study of ILD. The clinical outcomes were determined through pulmonary function tests (PFTs) after a one-year follow-up, as well as assessing all-cause mortality. RESULTS: 27 patients with ANCA-IIP and 143 patients with IPAF were analyzed from a cohort of 995 patients with ILD. Patients in the ANCA-IIP group had an older age and a high proportion of males compared to those in the IPAF group. PFT results at baseline were similar between the two groups, except for a better FEV1% in the ANCA-IIP group. Glucocorticoid and immunosuppressive therapy improved pulmonary function in patients with IPAF, but it continued to deteriorate after one year of treatment in the ANCA-IIP group. Furthermore, the all-cause mortality rate was significantly higher in the ANCA-IIP group than in the IPAF group (22.2% vs. 6.3%, P = 0.017). CONCLUSION: The responses to glucocorticoid and immunosuppressive therapy differ between the ANCA-IIP and IPAF groups, leading to divergent prognoses. Therefore, it is inappropriate to classify ANCA-IIP as part of IPAF.

Under the sustained exposure to tumor microenvironment, effector lymphocytes may transform into the suppressive populations. γδ T cells are recognized as a crucial mediator and effector of immune surveillance and thereby a promising candidate for anti-tumor immunotherapy. Emerging clinical studies implicate that some γδ T subsets play an important role in promoting tumor progression. Our previous study identified an abnormal Vδ2+ T cells subset with regulatory features (Reg-Vδ2) in the patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and demonstrated that Reg-Vδ2 cells significantly suppressed the anti-AML effects of effector Vδ2 cells (Eff-Vδ2). The molecular mechanism underlying the subset transformation of Vδ2 cells remains unclear. Here, we found that the expression and activity of STAT5 were significantly induced in Reg-Vδ2 cells compared with Eff-Vδ2 cells, which was consistent with the differences found in primary Vδ2 cells between AML patients and healthy donors. In-vitro experiments further indicated that STAT5 was required for the induction of Reg-Vδ2 cells. The combined immunophenotypical and functional assays showed that blockage of STAT5 alleviated the immunosuppressive effect of Reg-Vδ2 cells on Eff-Vδ2 cells and enhanced the anti-AML capacity of Vδ2 cells from health donors and AML patients. Collectively, these results suggest that STAT5 acts as a critical regulator in the transformation of effector Vδ2 cells into a subset with immunosuppressive characteristics, providing a potential target for the improvement the efficacy of γδ T cells-based immunotherapy to treat AML and other hematologic malignancies.

Gas vesicles (GVs) are microbial protein organelles that support cellular buoyancy. GV engineering has multiple applications, including reporter gene imaging, acoustic control and payload delivery. GVs often cluster into a honeycomb pattern to minimize occupancy of the cytosol. The underlying molecular mechanism and the influence on cellular physiology remain unknown. Using genetic, biochemical and imaging approaches, here we identify GvpU from Priestia megaterium as a protein that regulates GV clustering in vitro and upon expression in Escherichia coli. GvpU binds to the C-terminal tail of the core GV shell protein and undergoes a phase transition to form clusters in subsaturated solution. These properties of GvpU tune GV clustering and directly modulate bacterial fitness. GV variants can be designed with controllable sensitivity to GvpU-mediated clustering, enabling design of genetically tunable biosensors. Our findings elucidate the molecular mechanisms and functional roles of GV clustering, enabling its programmability for biomedical applications.

Cognitive function was assessed in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in the chronic phase (CML-CP) receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Cross-sectional assessments of 100 newly diagnosed patients and 584 patients receiving TKI therapy for >1 year showed that 31 (31.0%) and 191 (32.7%) patients had mild cognitive impairment, respectively. In the multivariable analyses, higher percentages of blood blasts were associated with a worse MoCA score at diagnosis [ß = -0.29, 95% confidence interval (-0.54, -0.03), p = .027]; deeper molecular response [versus < major molecular response, ß = 0.74 (0.07, 1.40), p = .029], better MoCA score on TKI therapy. Increased MoCA scores were observed after 12 months of TKI therapy in 42 patients who were regularly followed up (p = .005). Lower tumor burden is associated with better cognitive function in CML-CP patients both at diagnosis and during TKI therapy.

T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy often associated with poor outcomes. To identify high-risk factors and potential actionable targets for T-ALL, we perform integrated genomic and transcriptomic analyses on samples from 165 Chinese pediatric and adult T-ALL patients, of whom 85% have outcome information. The genomic mutation landscape of this Chinese cohort is very similar to the Western cohort published previously, except that the rate of NOTCH1 mutations is significant lower in the Chinese T-ALL patients. Among 47 recurrently mutated genes in 7 functional categories, we identify RAS pathway and PTEN mutations as poor survival factors for non-TAL and TAL subtypes, respectively. Mutations in the PI3K pathway are mutually exclusive with mutations in the RAS and NOTCH1 pathways as well as transcription factors. Further analysis demonstrates that approximately 43% of the high-risk patients harbor at least one potential actionable alteration identified in this study, and T-ALLs with RAS pathway mutations are hypersensitive to MEKi in vitro and in vivo. Thus, our integrated genomic analyses not only systematically identify high-risk factors but suggest that these high-risk factors are promising targets for T-ALL therapies.

BACKGROUND: BCR-ABL1T315I mutations confer resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Olverembatinib is a new potent BCR-ABL1 TKI with preclinical activity against T315I-mutated CML. In phase 1/2 studies, we explored the safety and efficacy of olverembatinib in Chinese adults with TKI-resistant CML in the chronic phase (CML-CP) and accelerated phase (CML-AP). METHODS: In the phase 1 study, olverembatinib was orally administered once every other day in 28-day cycles at 11 dose cohorts ranging from 1 to 60 mg, and we evaluated the maximum tolerated dose, recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D), safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of olverembatinib. In the phase 2 studies, olverembatinib was administered at the RP2D of 40 mg orally on alternate days for 28-day cycles. The primary outcome measure is major cytogenetic response (MCyR) and major hematologic response by the end of Cycle 12 in CML-CP and CML-AP, respectively. Fine and Gray's hazard models were used to identify covariates associated with responses. RESULTS: A total of 165 patients (> 80.0% of whom had received ≥ 2 TKIs) were enrolled in this study. Among 127 patients with CML-CP, the 3-year cumulative incidences of achieving MCyR, complete cytogenetic response (CCyR), major molecular response (MMR), MR4.0, and MR4.5 were 79.0, 69.0, 56.0, 44.0 and 39.0%, respectively. The highest response rates were observed in patients with a single T315I mutation. Among 38 patients with CML-AP, the 3-year cumulative incidences of achieving MCyR, CCyR, MMR, MR4.0, and MR4.5 were 47.4%, 47.4%, 44.7%, 39.3%, and 32.1%, respectively. In multivariate analyses, baseline BCR-ABL1 mutation status was significantly associated with cytogenetic and molecular responses. Common treatment-related adverse events included skin hyperpigmentation, hypertriglyceridemia, proteinuria, and severe thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSIONS: Olverembatinib was well tolerated, with significant antileukemic activity in adults with TKI-resistant CML-CP and CML-AP, especially those with the T315I mutation. Variables associated with self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms were explored in 1169 adults with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-therapy. The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and Self-Rating Depression Scale questionnaires were used to measure anxiety and depression symptoms. Two hundred and fifty-one (22.4%) and 415 (37.1%) respondents reported anxiety and depression, respectively. In multivariate analyses, female sex, lower education level, comorbidities, advanced-line TKI-therapy, and longer TKI-therapy duration were significantly associated with more severe anxiety and/or depression. It is concluded that socio-demographics, comorbidities, advanced-line TKI-therapy, and longer TKI-therapy duration were significantly associated with anxiety and/or depression symptoms in CML patients receiving TKI-therapy.

Mental health problems in the general population have been reported during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; however, there were rare data in persons with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Therefore, we performed a cross-sectional study on mental health evaluated using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9; depression), the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7; anxiety), and the 22-item Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R; distress), including subscales of avoidance, intrusion, and hyper-arousal in persons with CML, non-cancer persons, and immediate family members of persons with cancer as controls (≥16 years) by an online survey. Data from 3,197 persons with CML and 7,256 controls were collected. In multivariate analyses, CML was significantly associated with moderate to severe depression (OR = 1.6; 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 1.4, 1.9; p < 0.001), anxiety (OR = 1.4 [1.1, 1.7]; p = 0.001), distress (OR = 1.3 [1.1, 1.5]; p < 0.001), and hyper-arousal (OR = 1.5 [1.3, 1.6]; p < 0.001). Moreover, delay in regular monitoring was significantly associated with depression (OR 1.3 [1.0, 1.7]; p = 0.024), anxiety (OR = 1.3 [1.0, 1.8]; p = 0.044), avoidance (OR = 1.2 [1.0, 1.4]; p = 0.017), and intrusion (OR = 1.2 [1.0, 1.4]; p = 0.057); tyrosine kinase-inhibitor dose reduction or discontinuation, depression (OR = 1.9 [1.3, 2.8]; p = 0.001), distress (OR = 2.0 [1.4, 2.8]; p < 0.001), avoidance (OR = 1.6 [1.2, 2.1]; p = 0.004), intrusion (OR = 1.6 [1.1, 2.1]; p = 0.006), and hyper-arousal (OR = 1.3 [1.0, 1.8]; p = 0.088). We concluded that persons with CML during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have worse mental health including depression, anxiety, and distress symptoms. Decreasing or stopping monitoring or dose resulted in adverse mental health consequences.

The fast and cost-effective DNA extraction is critical for all DNA-based detections. Here, we fabricated a new kind of polyacrylamide microsphere (PAMMP) in various sizes with two methods, spot polymerization (large size but low yield) and modified inverse microemulsion polymerization (small size but high yield). The fabricated PAMMPs have strong autofluorescence (fPAMMPs), including both visible fluorescence (VF) and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF), which can remain very stable in various stringent conditions including strong acid and alkali and high temperature. The fabricated fPAMMPs were also highly positively charged, which could be used to effectively capture various biomolecules such as IRDye 800-labeled streptavidin and DNA. We thus developed a new method for rapid extraction (3-5 min) of DNA from various samples including bacteria, mammalian cells, plant and animal solid tissues, and human blood plasma using fPAMMPs. Moreover, the DNA captured on fPAMMPs (fPAMMP@DNA) could be effectively detected by both normal and quantitative PCR amplifications. Finally, we showed that NaBH4 treatment removed autofluorescence in fPAMMPs (PAMMPs), which could also be applied to DNA extraction and PCR detection. In conclusion, we here fabricated new kinds of fPAMMPs and PAMMPs, developed a new rapid DNA extraction method, and demonstrated their useful applications in PCR detection.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The number of immunocompromised patients has increased in recent years. Acute respiratory failure is a common complication leading to intensive care unit (ICU) admission and high mortality among such patients. The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) or oxygen therapy among these patients remains controversial, according to the inconsistent results of several randomised clinical trials (RCTs). This meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether NIV or oxygen therapy is the more appropriate initial oxygenation strategy for the immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory failure. METHOD: We will search all the RCTs that compared the efficacy of NIV and oxygen therapy on immunocompromised adult patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure on the major databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and others), conference proceedings and grey literature. Eligible RCTs will be included in accordance with the pre-specified eligibility criteria. The risk of bias will be assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration criteria and the quality of evidence will be assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. Data will be extracted with a standardised form and analysed using RevMan V.5.3 analyses software. Heterogeneity will be assessed using I2 statistic and the source of which will be investigated. Publication bias will be identified with the funnel plot. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required since it is not carried out in humans. The systematic review will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated extensively through conferences.
