RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Eczema is a common chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease, which is characterized by intense itching. Acupuncture can be effective for eczema, and it is thus regarded as a common complementary treatment. OBJECTIVE: The intention of this overview is to methodically appraise and synthesize evidence about systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) on acupuncture in eczema. METHODS: We searched for SRs/MAs of acupuncture with eczema in eight databases. We evaluated the methodological quality by Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), the reporting quality with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020 Checkist), and the evidence quality according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. RESULTS: A total of 7 SRs/MAs were included. According to AMSTAR-2, all the SRs/MAs included were categorized as critically low-quality. According to the PRISMA 2020 checklist, none of the reviews completed all the 27 items, thus their compliance was relatively weak. On the base of GRADE system, 2 of the 12 outcomes were rated as moderate, and 5 outcomes were rated as low-quality, while the others were regarded as very low-quality. CONCLUSION: Compared with the control group, the included reviews of the acupuncture group were more effective and safer; however, the conclusion should be treated cautiously because the quality of evidence was not high enough to support it. In order to improve the quality, more rigorous, standardized, and comprehensive SRs/MAs need designing in the future.

RESUMO

Right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction is a common surgical method to treat congenital cardiac lesions, and bovine jugular vein conduit (BJVC) has become a prevalent candidate of prosthetic material for this procedure since 1999. Although many clinical studies have shown encouraging results on BJVCs, complications such as stenosis, aneurysmal dilatation, valve insufficiency, and infective endocarditis revealed in other clinical outcomes still remain problematic. This review describes the underlying mechanisms causing respective complications, and summarizes the current technological development that may address those causative factors. Novel crosslinking agents, decellularization techniques, conduit coatings, and physical reinforcement materials have improved the performances of BJVCs. The authors expect that the breakthroughs in the clinical application of BJVC may come from new genetic research findings and advanced characterization apparatuses and bioreactors, and are optimistic that the BJVC will in the future provide sophisticated therapies for next-generation RVOT reconstruction.

There has been an increase in the incidence of hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal cancer worldwide, and hence growing needs for hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal tissue repair. This work produced a bi-layer composite scaffold with decellularized small intestine submucosa and polylactic-co-glycolic acid, which resembled the layered architectures of its intended tissues. The decellularized small intestine submucosa contained minimal residual DNA (52.5 ± 1.2 ng/mg) and the composite scaffold exhibited satisfactory mechanical properties (a tensile modulus of 21.1 ± 4.8 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 14.0 ± 2.9 MPa and a failure strain of 26.9 ± 5.1%). The interactions between cells and the respective layers of the scaffold were characterized by CCK-8 assays, immunostaining and Western blotting. Desirable cell proliferation and phenotypic behaviors were observed. These results have provided an important basis for the next-step in vivo studies of the scaffold, and bode well for its future clinical applications.
