RESUMO

(1) Background: it is only the longer chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) and not the shorter chain α-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3) that have been linked to health benefits. (2) Methods: 45 dogs divided into three groups were first given premium dry food for 38 days (baseline). The O3I was then used as a diagnostic tool to provide a measure of the sum of EPA + DHA in red blood cell membranes given as a percentage of all fatty acids. The dogs were subsequently fed with either krill meal (krill), fishmeal/oil (fish) or flaxseed cake (flax) included in raw food providing daily 416 mg EPA + DHA (971 mg ALA), 513 mg EPA + DHA (1027 mg ALA) and 1465 mg ALA (122 mg EPA + DHA), respectively. (3) Results: the average baseline O3I level of all dogs was low (1.36%), warranting n-3 supplementation. After four weeks, O3I levels were significantly increased in the krill (from 1.36 ± 0.44 to 2.36 ± 0.39%) and fish (from 1.35 ± 0.22 to 1.9 ± 0.35%) groups (p < 0.001). No significant modification of the O3I was detected in the flax animals. (4) Conclusions: only marine n-3 PUFAs resulted in a significantly increased O3I, with dietary krill meal providing the highest increase.

RESUMO

Use of synthetic feed additives, including synthetic vitamin D3 (D3) in the feed for cows and other ruminants, is not consistent with the international principles of organic farming. If dairy farmers wish to produce in accordance with the organic principles, production animals would be left with only their endogenous production of D3 from summer sunlight as a source of D3. To examine the impact of supplemental synthetic D3 from the feed on the D3 status of dairy cattle in organic production in Nordic countries, 20 high-yielding dairy cows and 30 dairy steers were divided into two groups: one supplemented with synthetic D3 in the feed and one not supplemented with synthetic D3. Vitamin D3 status of the animals was assessed by measuring the concentration of the liver-derived 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) in plasma. Results showed that 25OHD3 concentration in plasma from dairy cattle as well as from steers decreased during winter for both supplemented and unsupplemented groups. Unsupplemented cows and steers had approximately 2 ng 25OHD3 per ml plasma during winter, whereas supplemented animals had between 10 (cows) and 30 (steers) ng/ml. During summer and autumn there was no additive effect of supplementing with synthetic D3 since unsupplemented and supplemented animals had the same D3 status at this time of year. In all cows summer concentrations of 25OHD3 were 20-25 ng/ml and in all steers 40-50 ng/ml plasma. The decrease in vitamin D3 status during winter indicates that cows and steers are able to store D3 only to a limited extent. The results also show that cows or steers fed supplemental D3 according to Swedish recommendation throughout the year are not able to maintain their summer value of 25OHD3 during winter.

RESUMO

Vaccination status is conventionally measured by up-to-date coverage. This method does not take in to account whether the vaccines were received at the correct age and interval which is essential for optimal disease protection. Sri Lanka - a lower middle-income country in the Indian Ocean, has previously presented with high vaccination coverage for all childhood vaccines. However, few studies investigating timeliness of vaccinations have until now been carried out in Sri Lanka. Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the individual coverage and age appropriateness of vaccination, in two different demographic settings in Anuradhapura district, Sri Lanka. The study of cross-sectional descriptive design included 633 children born in 2011. Public Health Midwives kept hand-written documentation of the birth and vaccination dates on each child in her geographic area. Vaccination ages were then compared to the timelines of vaccination provided by the Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka. The vaccination coverage for all antigens was 97.5% (94.2-99.7%) at age 5-6 years. Timeliness of doses was between 65.0 and 88.6 % (median 80.7%; 65.0-88.6) and significantly lower in the urban population compared to the rural. The present study shows that the vaccine coverage in both urban and rural areas in Sri Lanka was high and that the timeliness predominantly followed national recommendations.

RESUMO

Water-soluble O-acetyl-galactoglucomannans (GGMs) can be obtained from Norway spruce by hot-water-extraction of the wood or as a side product by ultrafiltration of mechanical pulping waters. Cationic and amphiphilic polysaccharides and their derivatives are of interest for a number of applications and thus quaternary nitrogen moieties with cationic charge were grafted onto GGMs in the heterogeneous reaction to render a cationic polyelectrolyte. The degree of substitution was measured by elemental analysis of nitrogen, by quantitative (13)C NMR and interestingly also by polyelectrolyte titration and the results were congruent. NMR, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF-MS), and FT-IR analysis were used to characterise the product. THF or DMSO with water enhanced the reaction efficiency and decreased M(w) reduction in comparison to plain water as a reaction media. Cationised GGM was also successfully acetylated. The cationic derivatives of hemicelluloses can potentially be utilised as polyelectrolyte layers in packaging and pharmaceutical applications.
