RESUMO

Forkhead box protein 1 (FOXP1) serves as a tumour promoter or suppressor depending on different cancers, but its effect in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma has not been fully elucidated. This study investigated the role of FOXP1 in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma through bioinformatics analysis and experimental verification. We determined through public databases that FOXP1 expresses low in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma compared with normal tissues, while high expression of FOXP1 indicates a better prognosis. We identified potential target genes regulated by FOXP1, and explored the potential biological processes and signalling pathways involved in FOXP1 in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma through GO and KEGG enrichment, gene co-expression analysis, and protein interaction network construction. We also analysed the correlation between FOXP1 and tumour immune infiltration levels. We further validated the inhibitory effect of FOXP1 on the proliferation of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells through CCK-8, colony formation and subcutaneous tumour formation assays. This study revealed the anticarcinogenic effect of FOXP1 in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, which may serve as a novel biological target for the treatment of tumour.

RESUMO

The discovery of novel organic-inorganic hybrid nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal materials holds great potential in advancing laser science and technology as they offer a wide range of benefits including easy synthesis, structural versatility, and high hyperpolarizability. Herein, the integration of l-tartaric acid (L-C4H6O6) and ZnSO4 gave rise to two acentric Zn-based organic-inorganic hybrid crystals, namely, Zn2(H2O)2(C4H4O6)2·3H2O (Zn-LT) and Zn2(H2O)(C4H4O6)(C4H6O6)(SO4)·4H2O (Zn-LTS). They both feature layered structures constructed by [ZnO6] octahedron, l-C4H6O6/l-C4H4O62-, water molecule, or [SO4] tetrahedron. Interestingly, they possess moderate second-order NLO effects of 0.28 × KH2PO4 (Zn-LT) and 0.57 × KH2PO4 (Zn-LTS), large birefringence of 0.075 (Zn-LT) and 0.069 (Zn-LTS), suggesting that the introduction of [SO4] groups with intrinsically weak polarizability and weak optical anisotropy induces the enhancement of the NLO effect while without reducing birefringence much. In addition, both of them display UV cutoff edges near 210 nm, indicating their potential as NLO crystals applied in the UV and solar-blind region.

RESUMO

The latent value of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals applied in solid-state laser equipment necessitates the development of applicable strategies for constructing noncentrosymmetric (NCS) crystals. By modulating the synthetic temperature and pressure to achieve the rearrangement of [TeO3]2- groups, a new NCS tellurium tungstate, ß-K2TeW3O12 (ß-KTW), with a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response was synthesized based on its centrosymmetric polymorphic phase α-K2TeW3O12 (α-KTW). Computational calculation reveals that the large SHG response of ß-KTW (15 × KH2PO4@1064 and 1.5 × KTiOPO4@1950 nm) could be attributed to the uniform arrangement of the NLO-active [TeO3]2- and [WO6]6- groups. ß-KTW also exhibits enlarged birefringence (0.196@1064 nm) and a high laser damage threshold (42.3 MW cm-2), showing great potential as a nonlinear crystalline material. This work also provides a new route for the construction of NLO crystals based on centric structure, i.e., reverse pressure regulation.

RESUMO

Cerebral amyloid-ß (Aß) accumulation due to impaired Aß clearance is a pivotal event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Considerable brain-derived Aß is cleared via transporting to the periphery. The liver is the largest organ responsible for the clearance of metabolites in the periphery. Whether the liver physiologically clears circulating Aß and its therapeutic potential for AD remains unclear. Here, we found that about 13.9% of Aß42 and 8.9% of Aß40 were removed from the blood when flowing through the liver, and this capacity was decreased with Aß receptor LRP-1 expression down-regulated in hepatocytes in the aged animals. Partial blockage of hepatic blood flow increased Aß levels in both blood and brain interstitial fluid. The chronic decline in hepatic Aß clearance via LRP-1 knockdown specific in hepatocytes aggravated cerebral Aß burden and cognitive deficits, while enhancing hepatic Aß clearance via LRP-1 overexpression attenuated cerebral Aß deposition and cognitive impairments in APP/PS1 mice. Our findings demonstrate that the liver physiologically clears blood Aß and regulates brain Aß levels, suggesting that a decline of hepatic Aß clearance during aging could be involved in AD development, and hepatic Aß clearance is a novel therapeutic approach for AD.

RESUMO

A series of Ni(II) sandwich-like coordinated compounds were synthesized by the reaction of nickel dichloride and ten 4'-(4-substituent phenyl)-2',2':6',2″-terpyridine ligands, and their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR, ESI-MS, solid state ultraviolet spectroscopy and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. Three human cancer cell lines and a normal human cell line were used for anti-proliferation potential study: human lung cancer cell line (A549), human esophageal cancer cell line (Eca-109), human liver cancer cells (Bel-7402) and normal human liver cells (HL-7702). The results show that these nickel complexes possess good inhibitory effects on the cancer cells, outperforming the commonly used clinical chemotherapy drug cisplatin. Especially, complexes 3 (-methoxyl) and 7 (-fluoro) have strong inhibitory ability against Eca-109 cell line with IC50 values of 0.223 µM and 0.335 µM, complexes 4 and 6 showed certain cell selectivity, and complex 6 can inhibit cancer cells and slightly poison normal cells when the concentration was controlled. The ability of these complexes binding to CT-DNA was studied by UV titration and CD spectroscopy, and CD spectroscopy was also used to study the secondary structural change of BSA under the action of the complexes. The binding of these complexes with DNA, DNA-Topo I and bovine serum protein has been simulated by molecular docking software, and the docking results and optimal binding conformation data showed that they interacted with DNA in the mode of embedded binding, which is consistent with the experimental results. These complexes are more inclined to move to the cleavage site when docking with DNA-Topo I, so as to play a role of enzyme cleavage, while BSA promotes the action of the complexes by binding to effective binding sites.

RESUMO

Micro-RNAs play essential roles in developing and progressing nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and drug resistance. Nevertheless, the functions and mechanisms are partly explored. Therefore, the present study analyzes the effect of circ_0006528 and the mechanism of regulation of NSCLC cell progression by sponging miR-892a to regulate neuroblastoma rat sarcoma viral oncogene (NRAS) expression. Initially, circ_0006528 is identified using divergent primers-based PCR and RNase R exonuclease treatments. After administration of the designed circ_0006528-specific siRNA, the RT-qPCR analysis is used to determine the interference efficiency of siRNA. At the same time, cell growth, invasion, and migration are assessed by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), Transwell, and scratch assays in the NSCLC cell lines (secretory pathway Ca2+-ATPase isoform 1 [SPCA-1] and A549) in vitro, respectively. Further, miR-892a inhibitor is added to the cells for functional recovery assay. Finally, the xenograft mouse model is constructed to explore the effect of circ_0006528 on tumor growth in vivo. The RT-qPCR analysis in 66 pairs of NSCLC cancer and noncancerous tissues revealed that circ_0006528 is highly expressed in NSCLC patient tissues. The RNase R experiments revealed that HSA_circ_0006528 is unaffected by RNase R exonuclease. MTT assay showed that knockdown of hsa_circ_0006528 by siRNA significantly decreased cell proliferation and viability in A549 and SPCA-1 cells. The luciferase reporter assay showed direct binding of hsa_circ_0006528 to miR-892a, and miR-892a targets binding NRAS. In addition, the miR-892a inhibitor terminated the hsa_circ_0006528 siRNA, triggering inhibition of proliferation, invasion, and migration of NSCLC cells. In summary, the study revealed that the knockout of hsa_circ_0006528 downregulation of NRAS expression by sponging miR-892a inhibited NSCLC cell growth and invasion.

RESUMO

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) with low-dimensional structures have attracted increasing attention due to their striking optical properties. Herein, two new zero-dimensional HMHs have been fabricated by CdCl2/ZnCl2 and 4'-(4-pyridyl-phenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Tpy), including (TpyH3)[CdCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Cd) and (TpyH3)[ZnCl4][Cl] (Tpy-Zn). Their structures are consisted of a [TpyH3]3+ organic cation, an inorganic [ZnCl4] or [CdCl4] tetrahedron, and one isolated Cl- anion. Tpy-Cd crystallizes to a noncentrosymmetric structure and possesses a moderate second harmonic response of 0.72 × KH2PO4, while Tpy-Zn features a centrosymmetric space group. Though Tpy-Cd and Tpy-Zn crystallize into space groups of completely different symmetry due to distinct connection mode and molecular distortion, they display quite similar photoluminescence of bright green light emission under ultraviolet excitation, nearly identical in Stokes shift, photoluminescence quantum yield, decay lifetime, and energy. The photoluminescence quantum yields of green light emission were measured to be nearly 25%, outperforming most of the Cd/Zn low-dimensional HMHs.

RESUMO

Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is a presentative diamide pesticide utilized in agricultural area and as well as rice-fish co-culture system for pest control. However, the understanding of toxic effects of CAP on fish species is still incomplete. In the present study, we performed an integrated study of the acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of CAP on the crucian carp, Carassius carassius, a fish species widely distributed in freshwater area in China and commonly farmed in the rice-fish co-culture systems. Besides, biochemical changes, transcriptional responses and gut microbiota of fish were investigated upon sub-chronic CAP exposure. The results showed that CAP is low toxic to crucian carp with a 96 h LC50 of 74.824 mg/L, but has considerable accumulation in the fish muscles when exposed to 3 mg/L of CAP for 14 d and still detectable after 18 d recovery in fresh water. For sub-chronic test, fish were exposed to CAP at 0, 0.3, 3 and 30 mg/L respectively for 14 d. CAP induced oxidative stress and detoxification inhibition in the liver of fish by decreasing antioxidative and detoxicated enzymes activities and downregulating relevant genes expression. In addition, disrupted gut flora composition was found in all experimental groups by the 16 S rRNA sequencing data, indicating the gut microbiota dysbiosis in crucian carp and potential adverse host effect. All the results suggest that CAP at sublethal concentrations has prominent toxic effect on crucian carp and more attentions should be paid especially using directly in an integrated aquaculture system.

RESUMO

Meningiomas are the most frequently diagnosed primary intracranial tumors in adults. Surgical resection is preferred if the meningioma is accessible; for those that are not suitable for surgical resection, radiotherapy should be considered to improve local tumor control. However, recurrent meningiomas are challenging to treat, as the recurrent tumor might be located in the previously irradiated area. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a highly selective radiotherapy modality in which the cytotoxic effect focuses mainly on cells with increased uptake of boron-containing drugs. In this article, we describe four patients with recurrent meningiomas treated with BNCT in Taiwan. The mean boron-containing drug tumor-to-normal tissue uptake ratio was 4.125, and the tumor mean dose was 29.414 GyE, received via BNCT. The treatment response showed two stable diseases, one partial response, and one complete response. We also introduce and support the effectiveness and safety of BNCT as an alternative salvage treatment for recurrent meningiomas.

RESUMO

A 52-year-old male diagnosed with severe acute pancreatitis developed persistent abdominal distension and intermittent emesis six weeks after treatment. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the shape of the pancreas was not clear, and a pseudocyst (11.2*6.6 cm) existed in the tail of the pancreas, which compressed the portal vein and led to local portal hypertension. A transpapillary pancreatic duct stent (7F*9 cm) was successfully placed for drainage of fluid collection despite pancreatic duct obstruction, with one end into the pseudocyst cavity and the other into the duodenum. Duodenoscope observed outflow of the fluid collection immediately. Four days after the surgery, CT scan validated the location of the pancreatic duct stent, and the pancreatic pseudocyst was smaller than before. Another week later, the pancreatic pseudocyst nearly disappeared. No significant esophagogastric varix was observed by gastroscope, indicating a regression of local portal hypertension. The patient resumed eating normally, did not complain of vomiting, and was discharged from our hospital.

RESUMO

Nitrate addition is reported as a cost-effective method for remediating black-odorous water, which is mainly induced by the deficiency of electron acceptor. However, excessive release of nitrate and lack of long-term effectiveness significantly limited the application of direct nitrate dosing technology. Herein, for remediating black-odorous water, we constructed a nitrate sustained-release ecological concrete (ecoN-concrete), in which calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2) was dosed into concrete block to regulate the release of nitrate. The results showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, ammonia, phosphate, and sulfate were significantly removed in an ecoN-concrete-contained reactor fed with black-odorous water, and its removal efficiency was largely dependent on Ca(NO3)2 dosage. Meanwhile, the released nitrate was lower than 25% of its total dosage and nitrite was lower than 1.5 mg/L during 14 days remediation. After three recycles, the removal efficiencies of COD and turbidity by using ecoN-concrete were still more than 85%, indicating an excellent nitrate sustained-release performance of ecoN-concrete, which can be applied for preventing water re-blackening and re-stinking. Further investigation illustrated that the ecoN-concrete (1) decreased the abundance of Desulfovibrio, Desulfomonile, and Desulforhabdus in the phylum of Desulfobacterota to alleviate the odorous gas production and (2) significantly increased the abundance of Bacillus and Thermomonas, which utilized the released-nitrate for consuming organic matters and ammonia. This study provided an artful Ca(NO3)2 dosing strategy and long-term effective method for black-odorous water remediation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lung cancers arising in never smokers have been suggested to be substantially different from lung cancers in smokers at an epidemiological, genetic and molecular level. Focusing on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we characterized lung cancer patients in China looking for demographic and clinical differences between the smoking and never-smoking subgroups. METHODS: In total, 891 patients with NSCLC, including 841 with adenocarcinoma and 50 with squamous cell carcinoma, were recruited in this study. Association of smoking status with demographic and clinical features of NSCLC was determined, and risk factors for lymph node metastasis and TNM stage were evaluated using Multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: In patients with adenocarcinoma, never smokers showed a younger age at diagnosis (54.2 ± 12.7vs. 59.3 ± 9.4, padjusted<0.001), a lower risk for lymph node metastasis than smokers (7,6% vs. 19.5%, padjusted<0.001) and less severe disease as indicated by lower percentages of patients with TNM stage of III or IV (5.5% vs. 14.7%, padjusted<0.001 ). By contrast, these associations were not observed in 50 patients with squamous cell carcinoma. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that smoking status was a risk factor for lymph node metastasis (OR = 2.70, 95% CI: 1.39-5.31, p = 0.004) but not for TNM stage (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.09-14.43, p = 0.896) in adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that lung adenocarcinoma in never smokers significantly differ from those in smokers regarding both age at diagnosis and risk of lymph node metastasis, supporting the notion that they are distinct entries with different etiology and pathogenesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tumor cells tend to utilize glycolysis rather than aerobic respiration even under aerobic conditions. OVOL2, an inhibitory C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor, is a potential tumor suppressor in cancers. However, the association between OVOL2 and tumor energy metabolism is unknown. METHODS: Western blotting was used to determine the expression of OVOL2 in different non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and mouse models. The metabolic parameters in NSCLC cells following overexpression or knockdown OVOL2 were examined. To define the mechanism by which OVOL2 regulates aerobic glycolysis, interacting protein of OVOl2 and downstream molecular events were identified by luciferase assay and co-immunoprecipitation. We documented the regulatory mechanism in mouse xenograft models. Finally, clinical relevance of OVOL2, NF-κB signaling and GLUT1 was measured by immunostaining. RESULTS: OVOL2 is downregulated in NSCLC and overexpression of OVOL2 inhibits the survival of cancer cells. Moreover, OVOL2 directly binds to P65 and inhibits the recruitment of P300 but facilitates the binding of HDAC1 to P65, which in turn negatively regulates NF-κB signaling to suppress GLUT1 translocation and glucose import. In contrast, OVOL2 expression is negatively regulated by NF-κB signaling in NSCLC cells via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Re-expression of OVOL2 significantly compromise NF-κB signaling-induced GLUT1 translocation, aerobic glycolysis in NSCLC cells and mouse models. Immunostaining revealed inverse correlations between the OVOL2 and phosphorylated P65 levels and between the OVOL2 and membrane GLUT1 levels, and a strong correlation between the phosphorylated P65 and membrane GLUT1 levels. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest a regulatory circuit linking NF-κB and OVOL2, which highlights the role of NF-κB signaling and OVOL2 in the modulation of glucose metabolism in NSCLC. RESUMO

A series of lanthanide-containing water-resistant nitrates, namely RE(OH)2NO3 (RE = Tb(1), Dy(2), Ho(3), and Er(4)), was obtained through the hydrothermal process. As possible nonlinear optical materials, they feature a layered isomorph composed of an [REO3(OH)6] polyhedron and an [NO3] triangle, and the synergistic arrangement of the [REO3(OH)6] and [NO3] groups in their structures leads to their obvious second-order nonlinear optical effect. Nevertheless, the unique optical absorption caused by the electronic transitions on 4f-4f orbitals of lanthanides results in their second harmonic generation responses of different strengths, with 1 exhibiting 5.07 times that of KDP, but 2-4 showing less than half of KDP. In addition, 1 possesses an outstanding water-resistant capacity and a transparent cut-off edge around 300 nm, foreshadowing its potential value as a nonlinear optical crystal. Moreover, 1 is found to emit characteristic green fluorescence due to the typical 5D4 → 7F5 transitions of the excited Tb3+ ions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence staining is one of the most challenging procedures for laparoscopic anatomic liver resection (LALR). Here, we introduce a novel method based on the "hepatic pedicle first" approach that can improve the success rate of positive staining. METHOD: The target hepatic pedicle (even for the subsegment) was dissected through the first porta until it became visible. Five milliliters of 0.025 mg/ml ICG was injected after the target hepatic pedicle (extra-Glissonian approach) or portal vein/hepatic artery (intra-Glissonian approach) was punctured successfully using scalp acupuncture under direct vision. Then, the Glissonian pedicle or vessel was clamped immediately to prevent the intrahepatic diffusion of ICG. During the operation, a fluorescence imaging model was used repeatedly to confirm the segmental boundary. RESULTS: Finally, 24 patients underwent LALR with the "hepatic pedicle first" approach for ICG fluorescence-positive staining. In 5 patients, ICG-positive staining failed, representing a 79.17% success rate. The average staining time was 25.92 min ± 14.64 min. There were no complications associated with vessel puncture (bile leakage, hemorrhage, and thrombosis). CONCLUSION: The "hepatic pedicle first" approach is a feasible, convenient, and safe method for ICG-positive staining, with a high success rate.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The chloroacetamide herbicides pretilachlor is an emerging pollutant. Due to the large amount of use, its presence in the environment threatens human health. However, the molecular mechanism of pretilachlor degradation remains unknown. RESULTS: Now, Rhodococcus sp. B2 was isolated from rice field and shown to degrade pretilachlor. The maximum pretilachlor degradation efficiency (86.1%) was observed at a culture time of 5 d, an initial substrate concentration 50 mg/L, pH 6.98, and 30.1 °C. One novel metabolite N-hydroxyethyl-2-chloro-N-(2, 6-diethyl-phenyl)-acetamide was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Draft genome comparison demonstrated that a 32,147-bp DNA fragment, harboring gene cluster (EthRABCDB2), was absent from the mutant strain TB2 which could not degrade pretilachlor. The Eth gene cluster, encodes an AraC/XylS family transcriptional regulator (EthRB2), a ferredoxin reductase (EthAB2), a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (EthBB2), a ferredoxin (EthCB2) and a 10-kDa protein of unknown function (EthDB2). Complementation with EthABCDB2 and EthABDB2, but not EthABCB2 in strain TB2 restored its ability to degrade chloroacetamide herbicides. Subsequently, codon optimization of EthABCDB2 was performed, after which the optimized components were separately expressed in Escherichia coli, and purified using Ni-affinity chromatography. A mixture of EthABCDB2 or EthABDB2 but not EthABCB2 catalyzed the N-dealkoxymethylation of alachlor, acetochlor, butachlor, and propisochlor and O-dealkylation of pretilachlor, revealing that EthDB2 acted as a ferredoxin in strain B2. EthABDB2 displayed maximal activity at 30 °C and pH 7.5. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a P450 family oxygenase catalyzing the O-dealkylation and N-dealkoxymethylation of pretilachlor and propisochlor, respectively. And the results of the present study provide a microbial resource for the remediation of chloroacetamide herbicides-contaminated sites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The correlation between modified bladder outlet obstruction index (MBOOI) and surgical efficacy still remains unknown. The purpose of the study was to investigate the clinical value of the MBOOI and its use in predicting surgical efficacy in men receiving transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). METHODS: A total of 403 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) were included in this study. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QoL) index, transrectal ultrasonography, and pressure flow study were conducted for all patients. The bladder outlet obstruction index (BOOI) (PdetQmax-2Qmax) and MBOOI (Pves-2Qmax) were calculated. All patients underwent TURP, and surgical efficacy was accessed by the improvements in IPSS, QoL, and Qmax 6 months after surgery. The association between surgical efficacy and baseline factors was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: A comparison of effective and ineffective groups based on the overall efficacy showed that significant differences were observed in PSA, Pves, PdetQmax, Pabd, BOOI, MBOOI, TZV, TZI, IPSS-t, IPSS-v, IPSS-s, Qmax, and PVR at baseline (p < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis suggested that MBOOI was the only baseline parameter correlated with the improvements in IPSS, QoL, Qmax, and the overall efficacy. Additionally, the ROC analysis further verified that MBOOI was more optimal than BOOI, TZV and TZI in predicting the surgical efficacy. CONCLUSION: Although both MBOOI and BOOI can predict the clinical symptoms and surgical efficacy of BPH patients to a certain extent, however, compared to BOOI, MBOOI may be a more useful factor that can be used to predict the surgical efficacy of TURP. RESUMO

We present the case of a gallbladder-abscess cavity fistula in a 46-year-old male with walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WOPN). A step-up approach was used for two months, which consisted of a minimally invasive necrosectomy followed by postoperative percutaneous lavages with two drainage tubes. The range of the abscess was significantly reduced, as shown by the computerized tomography scan (Fig. 1). However, a substantial amount of odorless, pale yellow, feculent fluid (almost 1,000 ml daily) was discharged from the drainage tubes over the following days, without lavages.

RESUMO

A 43-year-old male with a diagnosis of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) was admitted to our hospital. After receiving the step-up approach for three weeks, the patient had a sudden hematemesis (nearly 400 ml). Gastroscopy and computed tomography (CT) were performed on the same day, revealing a gastric ulcer with a hemorrhage and the portal vein was extremely compressed by peripancreatic fluid collections in the retroperitoneal space.

RESUMO

The ripe dried fruit of citron(Citrus medica) is one of the important sources of Chinese herb Citri Fructus. At the same time, it is also grown for edible and ornamental uses. There are many species and abundant genetic variation. To clarify the intraspecific variation and resource distribution of citron, this study investigated the variation in 11 citron fruits, basically covering the main species in China, including Xiaoguo citron(C. medica var. ethrog), Goucheng(C. medica var. yunnanensis), Muli citron(C.medica var. muliensis), Dehong citron(C.medica×Citrus spp.), Fuzhou citron(C.medica×C.grandis?), Mawu(C.medica×C.grandis?), Cangyuan citron, Binchuan citron, Sweet citron, Big citron, and Small citron. The natural communities of citron were proved to be mainly distributed in the southwestern and western Yunnan and southeastern Tibet of China, with Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Chongqing, Hubei, and Zhejiang identified as the main production areas. Citron has also been widely grown in India, the Mediterranean region, and the Caribbean coast countries. The field investigation revealed the large-scale intraspecific variation of citron fruits. Most of the fruits are oval-like or sphere-like in shape. The fruits are green when raw and yellow when ripe, with oil cell dots on the skin, stripe-likes running from top to bottom, and bulge at the top. Usually, in the smaller citron fruits, the pulp and juice vesicles are better developed and the central columella is tighter. By contrast, the juice vesicles and central columella in larger fruits became more vacant, with carpels visible, and the apex segregation and development of the carpels is one of the reasons for variation. These variations should be given top priority in the future variety selection and breeding, and the quality differences of different citron species and their mechanisms should be further studied. In particular, variety selection and classification management according to their medicinal or edible purposes will provide scientific and technological supports for the orderly, safe, and effective production of citron products consumed as food and medicine.
