RESUMO

O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) glycosylation, a prevalent protein post-translational modification (PTM) that occurs intracellularly, has been shown to crosstalk with phosphorylation and ubiquitination. However, it is unclear whether it interplays with other PTMs. Here we studied its relationship with ADP-ribosylation, which involves decorating target proteins with the ADP-ribose moiety. We discovered that the poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation "eraser", ADP-ribose glycohydrolase (PARG), is O-GlcNAcylated at Ser26, which is in close proximity to its nuclear localization signal. O-GlcNAcylation of PARG promotes nuclear localization and chromatin association. Upon DNA damage, O-GlcNAcylation augments the recruitment of PARG to DNA damage sites and interacting with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, PARG O-GlcNAcylation enhances the poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation of DNA damage-binding protein 1 (DDB1) and attenuates its auto-ubiquitination, thereby stabilizing DDB1 and allowing it to degrade its downstream targets, such as c-Myc. We further demonstrated that PARG-S26A, the O-GlcNAc-deficient mutant, promoted HCC in mouse xenograft models. Our findings thus reveal that PARG O-GlcNAcylation inhibits HCC, and we propose that O-GlcNAc glycosylation may crosstalk with many other PTMs.

RESUMO

Direct inkjet digital printing is a relatively green and environmentally friendly textile printing method with a wide range of applications in the textile printing and dyeing industry. However, pretreatment of the fabric is required before digital printing, which will generate certain energy consumption and wastewater. In this study, a digital direct inkjet printing method was developed to improve the printing accuracy of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics without any pretreatment. A kind of direct inkjet printing ink was prepared by the response change in temperature viscosity. The increase in viscosity inhibits ink bleeding on the fabric, thereby improving printing accuracy. A thermosensitive direct inkjet printing disperse dye ink was prepared by adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and 3-methylsalicylic acid (3MS) to the ink. By evaluating the changes in the ink particle size, shear viscosity, and temperature viscosity, it was found that this thermosensitive ink has an excellent average particle size and special changes in viscosity with increasing temperature. When this heat-sensitive ink is printed on a polyester fabric, the fabric does not need pretreatment to improve the clarity of printing, and the printed fabric has satisfactory color fastness to friction and washing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the difference between cycloplegic and noncycloplegic refraction and evaluate the pseudomyopia prevalence in Chinese preschool children during the outbreak of COVID-19. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Tongzhou District of Beijing, China. Refractive error was measured under both noncycloplegic and cycloplegic conditions with autorefraction. The difference between noncycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and pseudomyopia prevalence were analyzed. Pseudomyopia was defined as SER ≤-0.50D in precycloplegic assessments and >-0.50D in post-cycloplegic assessments. RESULTS: Out of the 1487 participants who were enrolled in the study, 1471 individuals (98.92%) between the ages of 3-6 years completed all required procedures. A statistically significant difference in refraction was observed between noncycloplegic and cycloplegic measurements, the median of difference in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of 0.88D (dioptre)(0.50,1.38). There was a high intraclass correlation (ICC) between these two methods for cylinders (ICC = 0.864; 95% CI, 0.850-0.877). The median DSE for myopia, emmetropia and hyperopia were 0.25D (0.00, 0.38),0.25D (0.06, 0.50) and 1.00D (0.62, 1.38), an hypermetropes showed considerably greater differences than myopes and emmetropes (Kruskal-Wallis test, H = 231.023, P = 0.000). Additionally, girls displayed a greater DSE than boys. Furthermore, when comparing against-the-rule (ATR) and oblique astigmatism, it was found that with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism had the largest DSE. The study found varying prevalence rates of myopia, emmetropia, and hyperopia with and without cycloplegia, which were 1.90% vs. 10.06%, 11.49% vs. 50.31%, and 86.61% vs. 39.63%, respectively. Additionally, the overall prevalence of pseudomyopia was determined to be 8.29%. Participants with pseudomyopia had a significantly higher mean difference in SER (DSE) compared to non-pseudomyopic participants. CONCLUSIONS: Cycloplegic refraction is more sensitive than a noncycloplegic one for measuring refractive error in preschool children. Pseudomyopia is prevalent in preschool children during the COVID-19 outbreak period. Our study indicates the possibility that cycloplegic refraction should be performed in preschool children routinely.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 2020, China declared that the absolute poverty in the country had been eradicated, but older people in rural areas are deprived in multiple domains. Poverty is multidimensional and involves deprivations in health, social welfare, living standards, and income. This study focused on assessing the poverty status of rural older persons and providing a basis for decision-making at all levels of government in China. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted in four rural areas of China. Individuals aged 60 years and older were selected through stratified sampling. People with aphasia and severe cognitive impairment were excluded. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect older people's information, including basic demographics, major illnesses, disabilities, chronic diseases, functional disorders, and ability to perform activities of daily living. It also asked about the medical, financial, and social security assistance that respondents received, food and clothing standards, safe housing, clean energy, safe drinking water, and reliable electricity. Specific questions were asked regarding income sufficiency, financial support from children, and pension income. Multidimensional poverty measurements were used to compare regional disparities and indicators differences. Logistic regression was used to identify the risk factors influencing poverty. RESULTS: A total of 1272 older people were analyzed. Of them, 704 (55.35%) were women and 652 (51.26%) were aged between 60 and 69 years. The most frequently mentioned causes of poverty were illness, a lack of employment, inadequate technology, and poor transportation. We found that as multidimensional poverty indicators increased (from 6 to 10), the number of poor older people decreased (from 1218 to 437), as did the poverty incidence (from 95.75 to 34.36%) and multifaceted poverty index (from 53.41 to 25.06%). Xuanwei had the highest incidence of poverty (66.61%) and multidimensional poverty index (0.66) among the four provinces studied. Regarding the contribution of indicators, financial alleviation made the greatest contribution to multidimensional poverty among rural older adults (up to 70.51%). Age, marital status, education level, awareness of poverty alleviation policies, and region were significant predictors of multidimensional poverty among older rural residents(P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: China's subsidy system and financial support must be enhanced. Particular attention should be given to the re-education of rural older individuals, basic vocational education should be strengthened in rural areas, and social participation should be encouraged.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With rapid urbanization, massive migration, and non-family-based eldercare involvement, Chinese concepts of eldercare responsibility and filial piety are shifting. We performed age-period-cohort (APC) analyses to assess the transition of old-age pension coverage, eldercare responsibility, and filial piety concepts and its urban-rural differences among Chinese adults using data from the China General Social Survey (2006-2017). METHODS: Old-age pension coverage (yes/no) and primary eldercare responsibility (government/offspring/self/sharing) were investigated in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Filial piety was evaluated using customized questionnaires in 2006 and 2017. The APC effects were estimated using mixed effects and generalized additive models. RESULTS: Among 66,182 eligible participants (mean age: 48.8 years, females: 51.7%) in the six waves, APC analyses indicated that old-age pension coverage increased with aging and over time. Across cohort groups, it grew as the cohort was younger in urban residents but decreased in rural residents. The concept of offspring-based (> 50%) and government/self/offspring-shared eldercare (> 30%) predominated. APC analyses revealed that the offspring-based concept declined with aging (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.79-0.84), whereas the government-based (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.33-1.41) and self-based (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.47-1.63) concepts increased with aging. People born around the 1940s have a comparatively higher possibility to perceive that the primary eldercare responsibility should be undertaken by the government and elder parents. In contrast, people born in the younger cohort were more likely to perceive that adult children are responsible for their parents' primary eldercare. Filial piety score slightly increased with aging (ß = 0.18, SD: 0.05) but decreased as the birth cohort was younger. In addition, rural participants were more likely to perceive offspring-based eldercare and maintain filial piety, and the related urban-rural difference was intensified by aging. CONCLUSIONS: The traditional concept that eldercare solely relies on offspring has changed to relying on multiple entities, including the government and self-reliance. Diluted filial piety in people born in the young cohort requires reinforcement. Moreover, future healthy aging policies need to focus more on urban-rural disparities to promote equity in social well-being.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to investigate the association of parameters related to accommodation and convergence and axial elongation in basic intermittent exotropia (IXT) patients and the potential clinical predictors of axial length (AL) growth. METHODS: A total of 140 basic IXT patients were recruited in this study. The medians of AL growth in different age brackets were chosen to divide the subjects into group A (slower axial elongation group, n = 69) and group B (faster axial elongation group, n = 71). Parameters of dominant and nondominant eyes were compared and analyzed during the 12-month follow-up period. The parameters, including baseline refraction, angle of deviation, Newcastle control score (NCS), accommodative amplitude (AMP), accommodative facility (AMF), accommodative response, positive or negative relative accommodation (PRA/NRA), and near point of convergence (NPC), were analyzed via univariate and multivariate regression. RESULTS: Subjects in the faster axial elongation group tended to have more myopic spherical equivalents (t = 3.956, p < 0.001), greater AMPs of dominant eyes (t = -2.238, p = 0.027), and fewer near points of convergence (t = 2.347, p = 0.020) than in the slower axial elongation group. For dominant eyes, logistic and linear regression analysis revealed that more negative spherical equivalents (OR = 0.603, p < 0.001; ß = -0.045, p < 0.001), greater AMPs (OR = 1.201, p = 0.027; ß = 0.023, p = 0.010), and less near points of convergence (OR = 0.883, p = 0.021; ß = -0.012, p = 0.019) were correlated with the faster axial elongation. For nondominant eyes, a more myopic spherical equivalent (OR = 0.682; p = 0.001; ß = -0.029, p = 0.005) was the only parameter correlated with faster axial elongation through regression analysis. CONCLUSION: In children with basic IXT, faster axial elongation in the dominant eyes was associated with more myopic spherical equivalents, greater AMPs, and lower NPCs. These accommodative parameters can serve as potential clinical indicators for monitoring myopia progression in addition to AL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Longshi Scale is a pictorial assessment tool for evaluating activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with stroke. The paper-based version presents challenges; thus, the WeChat version was created to enhance accessibility. Herein, we aimed to validate the inter-rater and test-retest reliabilities of the WeChat version of the Longshi Scale and explore its potential clinical applications. METHODS: We recruited 115 patients with stroke in the study. The ADL results of each patient were assessed using both the WeChat and paper-based version of the Longshi Scale; each evaluation was conducted by 28 health professionals and 115 caregivers separately. To explore the test-retest reliability of the WeChat version, 22 patients were randomly selected and re-evaluated by health professionals using the WeChat version. All evaluation criteria were recorded, and all evaluators were surveyed to indicate their preference between the two versions. RESULTS: Consistency between WeChat and the paper-based Longshi Scale was high for ADL scores by health professionals (ICC2,1 = 0.803-0.988) and caregivers (ICC2,1 = 0.845-0.983), as well as for degrees of disability (κw = 0.870 by professionals; κw = 0.800 by caregivers). Bland-Altman analysis showed no significant discrepancies. The WeChat version exhibited good test-retest reliability (κw = 0.880). The WeChat version showed similar inter-rater reliability in terms of the ADL score evaluated using the paper-based version (ICC2,1 = 0.781-0.941). The time to complete assessments did not differ significantly, although the WeChat version had a shorter information entry time (P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval: -43.463 to -15.488). Health professionals favored the WeChat version (53.6%), whereas caregivers had no significant preference. CONCLUSIONS: The WeChat version of the Longshi Scale is reliable and serves as a suitable alternative for health professionals and caregivers to assess ADL levels in patients with stroke. The WeChat version of the Longshi Scale is considered user-friendly by health professionals, although it is not preferred by caregivers. RESUMO

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) refers to the transformation of polar epithelial cells into motile mesenchymal cells under specific physiological or pathological conditions, thus promoting the metastasis of cancer cells. Epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin) is a protein that plays an important role in the acquisition of tumor cell motility and serves as a key EMT epithelial marker. In the present study, AW01178, a small-molecule compound with potential therapeutic efficacy, was identified via in-cell Western high-throughput screening technology using E-cadherin as the target. The compound induced the upregulation of E-cadherin at both mRNA and protein levels and inhibited the EMT of breast cancer cells in vitro as well as metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, AW01178 is a novel benzacetamide histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) mainly targeting class I histone deacetylases. AW01178 promoted the transcription and expression of E-cadherin through enhancing the acetylation level of histone H3 in the E-cadherin promoter region, thereby inhibiting the metastasis of breast cancer cells. The collective findings support the potential utility of the novel HDACi compound identified in this study, AW01178, as a therapeutic drug for breast cancer and highlight its value for the future development of HDACi structures as anticancer drugs.

RESUMO

Emerging evidence has suggested that circular RNAs (circRNAs) have vital functions during the initiation and progression of various diseases. However, circRNA potential mechanisms in colorectal cancer (CRC) are largely unknown. Here, we sought to investigate the role and underlying regulatory mechanism of circ0104103 in CRC. circ0104103 was validated by quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) and Sanger sequencing. Gain- and loss-of-function assays in cell lines and mouse xenograft models were utilized to investigate the effects of circ0104103 in CRC. RNA pull-down assays, RNA immunoprecipitation assays, bioinformatics analyses, RNA FISH, and luciferase reporter assays were used to elucidate the potential mechanism of circ0104103 in CRC. We identified circ0104103, which is strongly downregulated in CRC tissues and cell lines. Functional studies revealed that circ0104103 inhibited CRC cell growth, migration, and invasion both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, circ0104103 binds to HuR, a functional RNA-binding protein commonly expressed in CRC. HuR binds to the 3'UTR of LACTB mRNA to facilitate stabilization and increase its expression. Moreover, circ0104103 was verified as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) via negative regulation of miR-373-5p to increase LACTB expression, resulting in inhibiting the occurrence and progression of CRC. Taken together, our study revealed that circ0104103 acts as a tumor suppressor and may be a novel biomarker and therapeutic target in CRC.

RESUMO

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are a key component of the tumor microenvironment and a critical factor in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to screen for CAFs specific genes that could serve as promising therapeutic targets for CRC patients. Our findings showed a significant increase in the proportion of fibroblasts in CRC tissues, and a high proportion of fibroblasts was associated with immune escape and poor prognosis in CRC. Collagen triple helix repeat containing 1 (CTHRC1) and inhibin subunit beta A (INHBA) were identified as key genes in the progression of CRC, primarily expressed in CAFs and significantly upregulated in CRC tissues. We defined CTHRC1 and INHBA as cancer-associated fibroblast-related genes (CAFRGs), which were associated with poor prognosis in CRC and macrophage polarization. CAFRGs promoted immune escape and metastasis in CRC and were good predictors of immune therapy response. Drug sensitivity analysis showed that the high expression group of CAFRGs was sensitive to 15 chemotherapy drugs, while the low expression group was sensitive to only 3. Clustering of fibroblasts in the tumor revealed that CTHRC1+ INHBA+ CAF was a poor prognostic factor in CRC and was associated with extracellular matrix remodeling and immune regulation. In conclusion, our study provides new theoretical basis for effective treatment strategies and therapeutic targets for CRC.

RESUMO

Members of the genus Hepacivirus have a broad range of hosts, with at least 14 species identified. To date, a highly pathogenic hepacivirus causing severe disease in animals has not been found. Here, by using high-throughput sequencing, a new hepacivirus was identified as the dominant and highly pathogenic virus in severe acute hepatitis outbreaks in bamboo rats (Rhizomys pruinosus), with ≈80% mortality; this virus emerged in February 2020 in two bamboo rat farms in China. Hepaciviral genome copies in bamboo rat liver were significantly higher than in other organs. Genomic sequences of hepacivirus strains from 12 sick bamboo rats were found to share 85.3 to 100% nucleotide (nt) identity and 94.9 to 100% amino acid (aa) identity and to share 79.7 to 87.8% nt and 90.4 to 97.8% aa identities with previously reported bamboo rat hepaciviruses of Vietnam and China. Sequence analysis further revealed the simultaneous circulation of genetically divergent hepacivirus variants within the two outbreaks. Phylogenetic analysis showed that hepacivirus strains from the present and previous studies formed an independent clade comprised of at least two genotypes, clearly different from all other known species, suggesting a novel species within the genus Hepacivirus. This is the first report of a non-human-infecting hepacivirus causing potentially fatal infection of bamboo rats, and the associated hepatitis in the animals potentially can be used to develop a surrogate model for the study of hepatitis C virus infection in humans and for the development of therapeutic strategies. IMPORTANCE Members of the genus Hepacivirus have a broad host range, with at least 14 species identified, but none is highly pathogenic to its host except for hepatitis C virus, which causes severe liver diseases in humans. In this study, a new liver-tropic hepacivirus species was identified by high-throughput sequencing as the pathogen associated with two outbreaks of severely acute hepatitis in hoary bamboo rats (Rhizomys pruinosus) on two farms in Hainan Province, China; this is the first reported highly pathogenic animal hepacivirus to our knowledge. Further phylogenetic analysis suggested that the hepaciviruses derived from hoary bamboo rats in either the current or previous studies represent a novel species within the genus Hepacivirus. This finding is a breakthrough that has significantly updated our understanding about the pathogenicity of animal hepaciviruses, and the hepacivirus-associated hepatitis in bamboo rats may have a use as an animal infection model to understand HCV infection and develop therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ageing poses a huge challenge to the Chinese social welfare system. However, a national long-term care (LTC) instrument has not been established yet. This study aimed to analyse and compare the content of six selected LTC instruments based on the linkage of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to provide a content reference from a functioning perspective for the development of a Chinese national LTC instrument. METHODS: Two trained health professionals performed the linkage analysis according to the refined ICF linking rules. The main concepts included in the items of three international LTC instruments, namely Minimum Data Set 3.0 (MDS 3.0), Initial Assessment Instrument (IAI), and New Assessment Tool for Determining Dependency on Nursing Care (NBA), as well as three Chinese instruments, namely Disability Assessment of Long-Term Care (DA-LTC), Specification for Elderly Care Unified Need Assessment in Shanghai Version 2.0 (SEC-UNA 2.0), and pictorial-based Longshi Scale (LS), were selected and linked to the ICF categories. The six selected LTC instruments were analysed and compared at the levels of ICF components, chapters, and categories. RESULTS: The main concepts of 340 items of the six LTC instruments were linked to 112 different ICF categories. Within the ICF framework, the 'Activities and Participation' component was most frequently addressed in the LTC instruments, followed by 'Body functions', at 52% and 38%, respectively. At the chapter level, 'b1 mental functions', 'd4 mobility', and 'd5 self-care' were addressed by the majority of LTC instruments. CONCLUSION: The ICF provides a general reference for the analysis and comparison of different LTC instruments. The findings indicate that all LTC instruments focused on older adults' physical needs; however, various important issues regarding their psychological and social participation needs were not addressed. Specific for China, the core elements of LTC instruments varied, and the ICF chapters 'b1', 'd4', and 'd5' are recommended to develop a national uniform one.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study validates performance of the Longshi scale against modified Barthel index in assessment of function in patients from different economic, educational and regional backgrounds in China. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. SETTING: One hundred and three hospitals and rehabilitation institutions across China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 14,752 patients with physical and cognitive impairments were enrolled and classified to five educational levels and five family income levels; 8060 participants were further selected from five regions to study regional influences. MAIN MEASURES: Activities of daily living were assessed with two evaluation tools, the Longshi scale and modified Barthel index. Results of evaluation with Longshi scale performed by non-healthcare workers were validated against modified Barthel index performed by healthcare workers using Pearson's correlation test. RESULTS: There were significant positive correlations between the findings of the Longshi scale administered by non-healthcare professionals and the modified Barthel index administered by healthcare professionals. This was true for level of education (correlations ranged from 0.697 to 0.822), family income level (correlations ranged from 0.724 to 0.761) and region (correlations ranged from 0.737 to 0.776). CONCLUSION: In a large dataset of 14,752 patients, positive correlations were found between Longshi scale and modified Barthel index measures of function. Positive correlations persisted across subgroup analysis of groups from different social, economic and regional backgrounds, and with administration by non-healthcare professionals. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long term care (LTC) services for functionally impaired senior citizens are crucial for addressing the challenges of aging. However, research on eligibility criteria and coverage of LTC in China is lacking. Our objective is to assess the current status of LTC and explore eligibility criteria and coverage for the elderly. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in two first-tier cities in China. Residents aged 65 or over were recruited from a nursing home and four primary hospitals. Participants were divided into three groups (bedridden, domestic, and community), then six grades (grade one to six) according to the Longshi Scale, and their functional ability was assessed using the Modified Barthel Index. Information such as diseases, complications, and daily care needs were collected. Nursing staff were invited to indicate patients' needs for care. A one-way ANOVA test, Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to explore the differences of variables in three Longshi groups or Longshi grades. RESULTS: Among all 1157 participants, with an average age of 80.54, 69.3% were in the bedridden group. The most common diagnosis was stroke (71.4%), with the most prevalent complication being pulmonary infection (25.2%). In the nursing assessment, basic health care, disease care, activity care, complication prevention care and psychosocial care were summarized as the five main aspects of LTC for the elderly. Feeding, bathing, drinking, bowel management and bladder management were identified as the basic care which fulfills participants' basic physical needs in each Longshi group. Mouth care, artificial airway management, and body reposition, which can prevent immobility complications, were highly demanded by bedridden elderly. CONCLUSIONS: The elderly in grade one to three are the ones in need of LTC most. The content of LTC for elderly should include basic care which fulfills their basic physical needs and complication care which can prevent immobility complications. The evidence of this research may contribute to the design of LTC in China. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study design was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-2000034067, Registered 22 Jun 2020, http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=54770 ).

RESUMO

FSCN1, an actin-bundling protein, is highly expressed in almost all metastatic tumors and is associated with the poor prognosis. In breast cancer FSCN1 is highly expressed in basal-like and triple negative subgroups. There is significant progress in understanding the role of fascin in breast cancer. Studies on FSCN1 in recent years have revealed that FSCN1 not only promotes tumor migration, invasion, metastic colonization, cancer cell self-renewal and drug resistance, but also regulates glucose and lipid metabolism and mitochondrial remodeling in tumor cells. In this review, we focus on the structure and regulatory mechanism of FSCN1 in breast tumorigenesis and metastasis, and discuss the clinical value of FSCN1 with the aim to provide a direction for further research in this field.

RESUMO

Obesity is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); however, the associations between underweight and T2DM and between weight status and prediabetes have not been systematically reviewed. We aimed to estimate the relative risks (RRs) of prediabetes/T2DM in underweight/overweight/obesity relative to normal weight. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to December 8, 2021. Prospective cohort studies with a minimum 12-month follow-up period reporting the association between baseline body mass index (BMI) categories and risk of prediabetes/T2DM in adults were included. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The main analyses of T2DM risk were performed using the ethnic-specific (Asian/non-Asian) BMI classification and additional analyses of prediabetes/T2DM risk by including all eligible studies. Random-effects models with inverse variance weighting were used. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were conducted to explore the potential effects of pre-specified modifiers. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020215957). Eighty-four articles involving over 2.69 million participants from 20 countries were included. The pooled RR of prediabetes risk was 1.24 (95% CI: 1.19-1.28, I2 = 9.7%, n = 5 studies) for overweight/obesity vs. normal weight. The pooled RRs of T2DM based on the ethnic-specific BMI categories were 0.93 (95% CI: 0.75-1.15, I2 = 55.5%, n = 12) for underweight, 2.24 (95% CI: 1.95-2.56, I2 = 92.0%, n = 47) for overweight, 4.56 (95% CI: 3.69-5.64, I2 = 96%, n = 43) for obesity, and 22.97 (95% CI: 13.58-38.86, I2 = 92.1%, n = 6) for severe obesity vs. normal weight. Subgroup analyses indicated that underweight is a protective factor against T2DM in non-Asians (RR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.40-0.99, I2 = 56.1%, n = 6). The magnitude of the RR of T2DM in overweight/obesity decreased with age and varied by region and the assessment methods for weight and T2DM. Overweight/obesity was associated with an increased prediabetes/T2DM risk. Further studies are required to confirm the association between underweight and prediabetes/T2DM, particularly in Asian populations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The complications and inadequate efficacy of prior cyclodestructive procedures limited their role in glaucoma management. Recent advances in treatment techniques and parameters for laser cyclophotocoagulation has expanded its role in today's glaucoma practice. In this review, we discuss the treatment outcomes of slow-coagulation continuous-wave transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (CW-TSCPC) as a glaucoma surgical procedure for multiple types of glaucoma in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). RECENT FINDINGS: Slow-coagulation TSCPC is a relatively new technique for CW-TSCPC that, unlike the 'pop' power titration technique of laser energy delivery, aims to avoid the production of the 'pop' sound that signals explosive inflammatory energy delivery to the ciliary body and nearby tissue. In slow-coagulation TSCPC, laser energy is applied in a fixed and lower amount over a longer duration, compared with the conventional pop technique. This laser energy approach leads to more stable, reliable, titratable, and selective ciliary body ablation for control of IOP, especially relative to the controversial current use of micropulse TSCPC. SUMMARY: Slow-coagulation CW-TSCPC can be used safely, efficiently, reproducibly, and efficaciously in wide range of glaucoma types including those with no history of incisional surgeries, good visual acuity, and medically refractory glaucomas.

RESUMO

Child neglect (CN) has been associated with eating disorders, but little is known about its prospective association with the eating habits (EHs) of children. This study aimed to assess the cross-sectional and prospective associations of baseline CN with six common EHs in Chinese primary schoolchildren. We analyzed two-wave data of 1102 children (aged 9.1 ± 0.5 years) in Wuhan, China. Baseline CN was investigated by the Child Neglect Scale. Baseline and follow-up EHs, including fruit, vegetables, milk, sugar-sweetened beverages, and high-calorie snack and breakfast consumption frequency, were assessed by the Food Frequency Questionnaires. The association of baseline CN with baseline/follow-up EHs was analyzed by the generalized linear model (GLM). The association of baseline CN with the change of EHs from baseline to follow-up was examined by the Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, pubertal stage, and body mass index, GLM indicated that higher baseline CN was associated with lower frequency of consuming fruit/vegetables/milk/breakfast and higher frequency of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages and high-calorie snacks at baseline, while it was only associated with lower frequency of vegetables/breakfast consumption and higher frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages consumption at follow-up. GEE results indicated that children with higher CN had a more rapid increase for the frequency of fruit/milk/breakfast consumption and a steeper decrease for the frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages consumption. In conclusion, higher CN was associated with unhealthy EHs. Yet simultaneously, children with higher CN have more scope to promote the health of their EHs. Targeting and reducing CN may be a promising approach for future interventions to improve subsequent EHs.

RESUMO

Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (HEAML) is a rare hepatic mesenchymal tumor with malignant potential. Unlike hepatic angiomyolipoma, HEAML is devoid of adipocytes. Thus, it is easy to be misdiagnosed as other tumors of liver, especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on preoperative imaging examinations. Herein, we present a case of HEAML mimicking HCC on magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in a 50-year-old female. After the primary diagnosis of HCC, the patient underwent a laparoscopic resection. The histopathology and immunohistochemical staining helped to reach the final diagnosis of HEAML. The important sign of central vessel can be seen on MRI in this case. The average apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value of the HEAML is 0.86±0.13x10-3mm2/s, which is lower than that of 0.97±0.02?10-3mm2/s of the normal liver. Previous literature on 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging of HEAML is limited to only 2 cases. The 18F-FDG PET/CT images of HEAML with high 18F-FDG accumulation with a maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of 8.88 and extensive necrosis are presented, indicating its malignant potential. This case aims to improve the ability of differential diagnosis from HCC on multimodal imaging, and provides values for further 18F-FDG PET/CT related studies.
