RESUMO

We investigate the shrinkage of a surface-grafted water-swollen hydrogel under shear flows of oils by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Interestingly, external shear flows of oil lead to linear dehydration and shrinkage of the hydrogel for all investigated flow conditions irrespective of the chemical nature of the hydrogel. The reason is that the finite solubility of water in oil removes water from the hydrogel continuously by diffusion. The flow advects the water-rich oil, as demonstrated by numerical solutions of the underlying convection-diffusion equation. In line with this hypothesis, shear does not cause gel shrinkage for water-saturated oils or non-solvents. The solubility of water in the oil will tune the dehydration dynamics.

RESUMO

Vertical chemical gradients extending over a few nanometers were explored. The gradients are based on plasma-polymerized oxygen-containing ethylene (ppOEt) films. Using plasma conditions with low CO2/C2H4 ratio and high energy input, cross-linked films were deposited as base layer, while increasing CO2 and lowering energy input resulted in less cross-linked yet highly functional films as applied as top layer. Aging studies indicate that, in particular, for very thin gradient structures, the cross-linked subsurface zone effectively hinders reorientation of the surface functional groups, thus restricting hydrophobic recovery and oxidation effects.

RESUMO

Here, we synthesize zwitterionic polymer brushes on polyester fabrics by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) after a prefunctionalization step involving an aminolysis reaction with ethylenediamine. Aminolysis is an easy method to achieve homogeneous distributions of functional groups on polyester fibers (PET) fabrics. Varying the polymerization time and the prefunctionalization conditions of the reaction, it is possible to tune the amount of water retained over the surface and study its effect on protein adhesion. This study revealed that the polymerization time plays a major role in preventing protein adhesion on the PET surface.

RESUMO

We address a strategy to graft hydrogels onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics using different acrylate-based monomers. The hydrogel-modified fabrics were prepared by a two-step modification. To this end, double functional groups were firstly introduced onto the PET surface via an aminolysis reaction involving allylamine. The final grafted polymer networks were then obtained after UV-induced radical photopolymerization by varying acrylate monomer types in the presence of a cross-linker. After characterization, the resulting hydrogels showed different morphologies and abrasion resistance performances depending on their chemical nature. UV-photopolymerization is a fast and low-cost method to achieve technical fabrics with specific desired properties.

RESUMO

In this paper we report on a novel chemical vapour deposition approach to the formation and control of composition of mixed anion materials, as applied to titanium oxynitride thin films. The method used is the aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) of a mixture of single source precursors. To explore the titanium-oxygen-nitrogen system the single source precursors selected were tetrakis(dimethylamido) titanium and titanium tetraisopropoxide which individually are precursors to thin films of titanium nitride and titanium dioxide respectively. However, by combining these precursors in specific ratios in a series of AACVD reactions at 400 °C, we are able to deposit thin films of titanium oxynitride with three different structure types and a wide range of compositions. Using this precursor system we can observe films of nitrogen doped anatase, with 25% anion doping of nitrogen; a new composition of pseudobrookite titanium oxynitride with a composition of Ti3O3.5N1.5, identified as being a UV photocatalyst; and rock-salt titanium oxynitride in the range TiO0.41N0.59 to TiO0.05N0.95. The films were characterised using GIXRD, WDX and UV-vis spectroscopy, and in the case of the pseudobrookite films, assessed for photocatalytic activity. This work shows that a so-called dual single-source CVD approach is an effective method for the deposition of ternary mixed anion ceramic films through simple control of the ratio of the precursors, while keeping all other experimental parameters constant.
