Mass Equilibration and Fluctuations in the Angular Momentum Dependent Dynamics of Heavy Element Synthesis Reactions.

Mass and angle distributions for the ^{52}Cr+^{198}Pt and ^{54}Cr+^{196}Pt reactions (both forming ^{250}No) were measured and subtracted, giving new information on fast quasifission mass evolution, and the first direct determination of the dependence of sticking times on angular momentum. TDHF calculations showed good agreement with average experimental values, but experimental mass distributions unexpectedly extended to symmetric splits while the peak yield remained close to the initial masses. This implies a strong role of fluctuations in mass division early in the collision, giving insights into the transition from fast energy dissipative deep-inelastic collisions to quasifission.

Diphtheria Outbreaks in Schools in Central Highland Districts, Vietnam, 2015-2018.

During 2015-2018, seven schools in rural Vietnam experienced diphtheria outbreaks. Multilocus sequence types were the same within schools but differed between schools. Low vaccine coverage and crowded dormitories might have contributed to the outbreaks. Authorities should consider administering routine vaccinations and booster doses for students entering the school system.

Reference Intervals of Thyroid Function Tests in First Trimester Vietnamese Pregnant Women.

BACKGROUND: Although TSH suppression by elevated ß-hCG is essentially seen during first trimester, differences in TSH reference ranges between various countries have been reported. Physiologic changes during pregnancy may also influence FT4 assays. This study aims to establish method-specific reference intervals (RIs) of TSH, FT4, and FT3 in Vietnamese, first trimester pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at My Duc Hospital, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Women with singleton pregnancies in the first trimester and conceived naturally were included. Those with a history of thyroid disease, positive thyroid-specific autoantibodies, diffuse goiter or one thyroid nodule > 10 mm in size or ≥ 2 nodules detected by ultrasound, and taking medications affecting thyroid function were excluded. Serum TSH, FT4, and FT3 were measured by chemiluminescent detection technology on the Access 2 Immunoassay System (Beckman Coulter, Inc., USA). Intra- and interassay coefficients of variations (CV) were 3.6% and 4.4% for TSH, 5.4% and 6.1% for FT4, 6.6%, and 6.0% for FT3, respectively. The 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles were used to determine RIs. RESULTS: Between August 1, 2017, to December 1, 2018, there were 876 pregnant women who fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. They had a mean age of 30.1 years, an average BMI of 21.3 kg/m2, and 77.3% of them were primigravida. The RIs for TSH, FT4 and FT3 were 0.17 - 2.35 mIU/L, 0.67 - 1.11 ng/dL and 2.82 - 3.90 pg/mL, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Established RIs for TSH, FT4, and FT3 in Vietnamese women would help to reduce the misdiagnosis of gestational thyroid disorders.

The choice of anesthetics for magnetic resonance imaging in rodents is a difficult and important task. Experiments carried out on small laboratory animals are analyzed in this review. Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and respiratory rate measured during the experiment under anesthesia of various types are described. Since anesthetics affect the physiological state of animals, they indirectly influence the results of investigation. Therefore, prior to the start of experiment, a literary search has to be carried out in order to choose a method of anesthesia least affecting the parameters studied.

Interplay between quantum shells and orientation in quasifission.

The quasifission mechanism hinders fusion in heavy systems through breakup within zeptoseconds into two fragments with partial mass equilibration. Its dependence on the structure of both the collision partners and the final fragments is a key question. Our original approach is to combine an experimental measurement of the fragments' mass-angle correlations in (40)Ca+(238)U with microscopic quantum calculations. We demonstrate an unexpected interplay between the orientation of the prolate deformed (238)U with quantum shell effects in the fragments. In particular, calculations show that only collisions with the tip of (238)U produce quasifission fragments in the magic Z=82 region, while collisions with the side are the only ones that may result in fusion.

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies in Infertile Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

To compare the rate of positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Ab) between women with different polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) phenotypes and women without PCOS. This is a retrospective cohort study. Women with PCOS at My Duc Hospital between June 1, 2020, and March 27, 2021, were matched with non-PCOS women by age. TPO Ab (cut-off: 34 IU/mL) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured as markers of Hashimoto thyroiditis and thyroid function, respectively. One thousand eight hundred eight infertile women were included, 904 with PCOS (mean age 29.0 ± 3.58 years) and 904 without PCOS (29.1 ± 3.4 years; controls). Women with PCOS had a higher body mass index (22.8 ± 3.84 vs. 19.9 ± 2.23 kg/m2, p < 0.001), but most were not overweight/obese. Rates of positive TPO Ab in women with versus without PCOS were 8.2% and 8.4%, respectively (p = 0.932). Rates of positive TPO Ab in patients with PCOS phenotype A, B, C, or D were not statistically different (7.5%, 2.9%, 20.0%, and 7.8%, respectively). Median TSH concentrations were similar in the PCOS and control groups (1.84 mIU/L vs. 1.78 mIU/L, respectively; p = 0.194). Based on a linear regression model, there was no correlation between either BMI or the estradiol to progesterone ratio and TPO Ab status. In a large population of infertile women with PCOS who were mostly lean patients, rates of positive TPO Ab across all four PCOS phenotypes did not differ significantly from those in women without PCOS. These findings did not support the hypothesis that PCOS is a risk factor for Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Complete mitochondrial genomes of the Laotian Rock Rat (Laonastes aenigmamus) confirm deep divergence within the species.

Mitochondrial genomes of five Laotian Rock Rat (Laonastes aenigmamus) samples from Vietnam and Laos were sequenced using an Illumina platform. After de novo assembly, 13 protein-coding genes and two rRNA (12S and 16S) of the five genomes were aligned and analyzed with those from other related species under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences. Both methods revealed congruent tree topologies, which support two independently evolving clades of L. aenigmamus from Laos and Vietnam. The relaxed time calibration analysis showed that the two major lineages of the Laotian Rock Rat split about 8 million years ago, which was consistent with the results from previous studies using only cytochrome b sequences. Such a deep divergence time suggests the recognition of two rock rat species, but further nuclear DNA and morphological data are needed to solve the taxonomy of this taxon.

A new flavone and cytotoxic activity of flavonoid constituents isolated from Miliusa balansae (Annonaceae).

A new flavone named miliufavol [8-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-5-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3,7-dimethoxy-4H-chromen-4-one or 8-C-(o)-hydroxybenzylpachypodol] from Miliusa balansae (Annonaceae) was isolated and structurally elucidated by spectroscopic means besides four known flavones: ombuine, chrysosplenol B, pachypodol and chrysosplenol C. These flavonoids exhibited interesting cytotoxic activity against three human cell lines (KB, Hep-G2, RD) with IC50 values < 5 microg/ml.

Most type 1 diabetes presenting as diabetic ketoacidosis in Vietnamese people is negative for pancreatic islet cell autoantibodies.

Eighteen Vietnamese type 1 diabetic patients presented with ketoacidosis were serially recruited from three tertiary cares. They had mean age (±SD) 23.5±4.1years, median of blood glucose [interquartile range] 28.2 [24.3-31.3]mmol/L, pH 7.255 [7.232-7.285], C-peptide 0.265 [0.098-0.472]nmol/L. 61% were negative for both anti-GAD and ICA tests.
