RESUMO

The interaction of a resonant light field with a quantum two-level system is of key interest both for fundamental quantum optics and quantum technological applications employing resonant excitation. While emission under resonant continuous-wave excitation has been well studied, the more complex emission spectrum of dynamically dressed states-a quantum two-level system driven by resonant pulsed excitation-has so far been investigated in detail only theoretically. Here, we present the first experimental observation of the complete resonance fluorescence emission spectrum of a single quantum two-level system, in the form of an excitonic transition in a semiconductor quantum dot, driven by finite Gaussian pulses. We observe multiple emerging sidebands as predicted by theory, with an increase of their number and spectral detuning with excitation pulse intensity and a dependence of their spectral shape and intensity on the pulse length. Detuning-dependent measurements provide additional insights into the emission features. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations of the emission spectra, corroborating our findings.

RESUMO

Large-scale selection analyses of protein-coding sequences and phylogenetic tree reconstructions require suitable trees in Newick format. We developed the NewickTreeModifier (NTM), a simple web-based tool to trim and modify Newick trees for such analyses. The users can choose provided master trees or upload a tree to prune it to selected species available in FASTA, NEXUS, or PHYLIP sequence format with an internal converter, a simple species list, or directly determined from a checklist interface of the master trees. Plant, insect, and vertebrate master trees comprise the maximum number of species in an up-to-date phylogenetic order directly transferable to the pruned Newick outfile. NTM is available at https://retrogenomics.uni-muenster.de/tools/ntm.

RESUMO

Optoelectronic properties of van der Waals homostructures can be selectively engineered by the relative twist angle between layers. Here, we study the twist-dependent moiré coupling in MoSe_{2} homobilayers. For small angles, we find a pronounced redshift of the K-K and Γ-K excitons accompanied by a transition from K-K to Γ-K emission. Both effects can be traced back to the underlying moiré pattern in the MoSe_{2} homobilayers, as confirmed by our low-energy continuum model for different moiré excitons. We identify two distinct intralayer moiré excitons for R stacking, while H stacking yields two degenerate intralayer excitons due to inversion symmetry. In both cases, bright interlayer excitons are found at higher energies. The performed calculations are in excellent agreement with experiment and allow us to characterize the observed exciton resonances, providing insight about the layer composition and relevant stacking configuration of different moiré exciton species.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that semiconductor quantum dots can be excited efficiently in a resonant three-photon process, while resonant two-photon excitation is highly suppressed. Time-dependent Floquet theory is used to quantify the strength of the multiphoton processes and model the experimental results. The efficiency of these transitions can be drawn directly from parity considerations in the electron and hole wave functions in semiconductor quantum dots. Finally, we exploit this technique to probe intrinsic properties of InGaN quantum dots. In contrast to nonresonant excitation, slow relaxation of charge carriers is avoided, which allows us to measure directly the radiative lifetime of the lowest energy exciton states. Since the emission energy is detuned far from the resonant driving laser field, polarization filtering is not required and emission with a greater degree of linear polarization is observed compared to nonresonant excitation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oxygen inhalation aborts cluster headache attacks, and case reports show the effect of continuous positive airway pressure. The aim of this study was to investigate the prophylactic effect of continuous positive airway pressure in chronic cluster headache. METHODS: This was a randomized placebo-controlled triple-blind crossover study using active and sham continuous positive airway pressure treatment for chronic cluster headache. Patients entered a one month's baseline period before randomly being assigned to two months' active continuous positive airway pressure treatment followed by a four weeks' washout period and two months' sham continuous positive airway pressure or vice versa. Primary outcome measure was number of cluster headache attacks/week. RESULTS: Of the 30 included participants (12 males, median age 49.5 years, min-max 20-66 years), 25 completed both treatment/sham cycles (two discontinued, three lost to follow-up). The median number of cluster headache attacks per week was reduced from 8.25 (0.75-89.75) attacks to 6.25 (0-56.00) attacks for active continuous positive airway pressure and to 7.50 (0.50-43.75) attacks for sham continuous positive airway pressure, but there was no difference in active versus sham (p = 0.904). One patient had a serious adverse event during active treatment, none occurred during sham treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous positive airway pressure treatment did not reduce the number of cluster headache attacks compared to sham treatment in chronic cluster headache patients. RESUMO

Nanoplasmonic systems combined with optically active two-dimensional materials provide intriguing opportunities to explore and control light-matter interactions at extreme subwavelength length scales approaching the exciton Bohr radius. Here, we present room- and cryogenic-temperature investigations of a MoSe2 monolayer on individual gold dipole nanoantennas. By controlling nanoantenna size, the dipolar resonance is tuned relative to the exciton achieving a total tuning of ∼130 meV. Differential reflectance measurements performed on >100 structures reveal an apparent avoided crossing between exciton and dipolar mode and an exciton-plasmon coupling constant of g = 55 meV, representing g/(ℏωX) ≥ 3% of the transition energy. This places our hybrid system in the intermediate-coupling regime where spectra exhibit a characteristic Fano-like shape. We demonstrate active control by varying the polarization of the excitation light to programmably suppress coupling to the dipole mode. We further study the emerging optical signatures of the monolayer localized at dipole nanoantennas at 10 K.

RESUMO

The lifestyle of parasitic plants is associated with peculiar morphological, genetic, and physiological adaptations that existing online plant-specific resources fail to adequately represent. Here, we introduce the Web Application for the Research of Parasitic Plants (WARPP) as an online resource dedicated to advancing research and development of parasitic plant biology. WARPP is a framework to facilitate international efforts by providing a central hub of curated evolutionary, ecological, and genetic data. The first version of WARPP provides a community hub for researchers to test this web application, for which curated data revolving around the economically important Broomrape family (Orobanchaceae) is readily accessible. The initial set of WARPP online tools includes a genome browser that centralizes genomic information for sequenced parasitic plant genomes, an orthogroup summary detailing the presence and absence of orthologous genes in parasites compared with nonparasitic plants, and an ancestral trait explorer showing the evolution of life-history preferences along phylogenies. WARPP represents a project under active development and relies on the scientific community to populate the web app's database and further the development of new analysis tools. The first version of WARPP can be securely accessed at https://parasiticplants.app. The source code is licensed under GNU GPLv2 and is available at https://github.com/wickeLab/WARPP.

RESUMO

We propose a scheme for the generation of highly indistinguishable single photons using semiconductor quantum dots and demonstrate its performance and potential. The scheme is based on the resonant two-photon excitation of the biexciton followed by stimulation of the biexciton to selectively prepare an exciton. Quantum-optical simulations and experiments are in good agreement and show that the scheme provides significant advantages over previously demonstrated excitation methods. The two-photon excitation of the biexciton suppresses re-excitation and enables ultralow multiphoton errors, while the precisely timed stimulation pulse results in very low timing jitter of the photons, and consequently, high indistinguishability. In addition, the polarization of the stimulation pulse allows us to deterministically program the polarization of the emitted photon (H or V). This ensures that all emission of interest occurs in the polarization of the detection channel, resulting in higher brightness than cross-polarized resonant excitation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Telemedicine is defined as video-based consultations with synchronous video and sound. This systematic review investigated the use of telemedicine for headache patients. The primary outcomes of interest were treatment efficacy, feasibility, safety, convenience, compliance, and patient satisfaction. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed and Embase. Thirteen articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. A systematic review protocol was registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews, registration number CRD42021265875. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in treatment efficacy, patient satisfaction, compliance or safety using telemedicine when compared to traditional consultations. Telemedicine was found to be convenient due to being less time-consuming and expensive, especially for patients with limited access to health care. Despite the frequent occurrence of technical errors, telemedicine was found to be feasible. CONCLUSION: Telemedicine consultations are similar in quality to traditional in-office headache consultations and can be a more convenient solution for eligible headache patients.

RESUMO

Applications in catalysis, adsorption and separation require high surface areas as provided by mesoporous materials. Particularly attractive is the class of silica-based mesoporous glasses, which are mechanically and chemically very stable and post-synthetically modifiable allowing specific surface properties to be introduced. One of the catalytically relevant moieties is the sulfonic acid group. To optimize the performance of mesoporous glass systems, analytical methods are required to determine the state of surface modification and its effect on the porosity. To this end, we here propose a specific combination of spectroscopic methods: The porosity during the introduction of thiol functionalities and subsequent oxidation into sulfonic acid groups on the surface of porous micro glass beads is investigated using hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR, revealing that during the two modification steps the textural properties are preserved. The grafting mode as well as the surface coverage are determined using 29Si MAS NMR. The oxidation step is demonstrated to be complete as probed by Raman spectroscopy and 13C MAS NMR. Our combined analysis demonstrates the successful and complete surface modification as well as the maintenance of the free accessibility of the mesopore system.

RESUMO

We demonstrate electrostatic switching of individual, site-selectively generated matrices of single photon emitters (SPEs) in MoS2 van der Waals heterodevices. We contact monolayers of MoS2 in field-effect devices with graphene gates and hexagonal boron nitride as the dielectric and graphite as bottom gates. After the assembly of such gate-tunable heterodevices, we demonstrate how arrays of defects, that serve as quantum emitters, can be site-selectively generated in the monolayer MoS2 by focused helium ion irradiation. The SPEs are sensitive to the charge carrier concentration in the MoS2 and switch on and off similar to the neutral exciton in MoS2 for moderate electron doping. The demonstrated scheme is a first step for producing scalable, gate-addressable, and gate-switchable arrays of quantum light emitters in MoS2 heterostacks.

RESUMO

Controversies on the effects of media use have a long history and have become even more prevalent in the times of growing digitization. Particularly, potential harms and negative consequences have attracted scientific attention over the past decades. Various research projects have indeed demonstrated, that different negative repercussions can be caused by media use, especially regarding so called "new media" like internet-based computer games and social media. At least in individuals displaying an overuse of these media, research has demonstrated associations with developmental issues, heightened psychopathological symptoms, and problematic or addicted use. Yet, research also demonstrates that these associations are not linear ones but rather follow complex pathways. Thus, simply calling for a complete media abstinence it seems more promising developing pedagogic concepts for enabling children and adolescents using the possibilities of our digital world in a functional and self-determined way.

RESUMO

The growing availability of digital technologies has led to increased rates of using them as a part of daily recreational activity among adolescents. Despite their positive effects, there are ongoing debates of potential harm and health-related negative consequences, particularly when internet activities are performed excessively. This contribution provides an overview on negative aspects of digital technologies by presenting a selection of empirical findings. This overview focuses on a selection of recent methodologically sound studies investigating potential negative effects of digital technologies on the development of adolescents. As main constructs, effects on psychosocial and cognitive development and internet use disorders were investigated. Recently published studies point to substantial associations between internet overuse and negative consequences. Habitual, intense use of the internet is related to higher rates of internalizing symptoms, cognitive distortions, and heightened rates of internet use disorders among adolescents. Given these findings it seems recommendable to provide a close parental monitoring of adolescents discovering virtual worlds. By applying clear rules and supporting development of media literacy, functional use habits can be empowered and harmful effects prevented. The new clinical phenomenon of internet use disorder and its high prevalence among adolescents represents a new challenge for treatment services.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic headache causing severe headache-related disability for those affected by the disease is under- or misdiagnosed in many cases and therefore requires easy access to a specialist for optimal health care management. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the research is to determine whether video consultations are noninferior to face-to-face consultations in treating chronic headache patients referred to a specialist in Northern Norway. METHODS: Patients included in the study were recruited from general practice referrals to a specialist at a neurological department in Northern Norway (Tromsø) and diagnosed according to the International Headache Society classification system. In a randomized controlled design, the 1-year remission rate of chronic headache (change from ≥15 to <15 headache days per month during the last 3 months), patient satisfaction with a specialist consultation, and need for follow-up consultations by general practitioners were compared between groups consulted by video and face-to-face in a post hoc analysis. Data were collected by interview (baseline) and questionnaire (follow-up). RESULTS: From a baseline cohort of 402 headache patients consecutively referred from general practice to a specialist over 2.5 years, 58.0% (233/402) were classified as chronic headache and included in this study. Response rates were 71.7% (86/120) in the video group and 67.3% (76/113) in the face-to-face group. One-year remission from chronic headache was achieved in 43.0% (37/86) in the video group and 39.5% (30/76) in the face-to-face group (P=.38). Patient satisfaction with consultations were 86.5% (32/37; video) and 93.3% (28/30; face-to-face; P=.25). A total of 30% (11/37) in the video group and 53% (16/30) in the face-to-face group consulted general practitioners during the follow-up period (P=.03), and median number of consultations was 1 (IQR 0-13) and 1.5 (IQR 0-15), respectively (P=.19). CONCLUSIONS: One-year remission rate from chronic headache was about 40% regardless of consultation form. Likewise, patient satisfaction with consultation and need for follow-up visits in general practice post consultation was similar. Treating chronic headache patients by using video consultations is not inferior to face-to-face consultations and may be used in clinical neurological practice. RESUMO

Resonance fluorescence has played a major role in quantum optics with predictions and later experimental confirmation of nonclassical features of its emitted light such as antibunching or squeezing. In the Rayleigh regime where most of the light originates from the scattering of photons with subnatural linewidth, antibunching would appear to coexist with sharp spectral lines. Here, we demonstrate that this simultaneous observation of subnatural linewidth and antibunching is not possible with simple resonant excitation. Using an epitaxial quantum dot for the two-level system, we independently confirm the single-photon character and subnatural linewidth by demonstrating antibunching in a Hanbury Brown and Twiss type setup and using high-resolution spectroscopy, respectively. However, when filtering the coherently scattered photons with filter bandwidths on the order of the homogeneous linewidth of the excited state of the two-level system, the antibunching dip vanishes in the correlation measurement. Our observation is explained by antibunching originating from photon-interferences between the coherent scattering and a weak incoherent signal in a skewed squeezed state. This prefigures schemes to achieve simultaneous subnatural linewidth and antibunched emission.

RESUMO

We investigate the degree of indistinguishability of cascaded photons emitted from a three-level quantum ladder system; in our case the biexciton-exciton cascade of semiconductor quantum dots. For the three-level quantum ladder system we theoretically demonstrate that the indistinguishability is inherently limited for both emitted photons and determined by the ratio of the lifetimes of the excited and intermediate states. We experimentally confirm this finding by comparing the quantum interference visibility of noncascaded emission and cascaded emission from the same semiconductor quantum dot. Quantum optical simulations produce very good agreement with the measurements and allow us to explore a large parameter space. Based on our model, we propose photonic structures to optimize the lifetime ratio and overcome the limited indistinguishability of cascaded photon emission from a three-level quantum ladder system.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that prestructured metal nanogaps can be shaped on-chip to below 10 nm by femtosecond laser ablation. We explore the plasmonic properties and the nonlinear photocurrent characteristics of the formed tunnel junctions. The photocurrent can be tuned from multiphoton absorption toward the laser-induced strong-field tunneling regime in the nanogaps. We demonstrate that a unipolar ballistic electron current is achieved by designing the plasmonic junctions to be asymmetric, which allows ultrafast electronics on the nanometer scale.

RESUMO

Photonic quantum technologies call for scalable quantum light sources that can be integrated, while providing the end user with single and entangled photons on demand. One promising candidate is strain free GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots obtained by aluminum droplet etching. Such quantum dots exhibit ultra low multi-photon probability and an unprecedented degree of photon pair entanglement. However, different to commonly studied InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots obtained by the Stranski-Krastanow mode, photons with a near-unity indistinguishability from these quantum emitters have proven to be elusive so far. Here, we show on-demand generation of near-unity indistinguishable photons from these quantum emitters by exploring pulsed resonance fluorescence. Given the short intrinsic lifetime of excitons and trions confined in the GaAs quantum dots, we show single photon indistinguishability with a raw visibility of [Formula: see text], without the need for Purcell enhancement. Our results represent a milestone in the advance of GaAs quantum dots by demonstrating the final missing property standing in the way of using these emitters as a key component in quantum communication applications, e.g., as quantum light sources for quantum repeater architectures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Today a variety of phylogenetic file formats exists, some of which are well-established but limited in their data model, while other more recently introduced ones offer advanced features for metadata representation. Although most currently available software only supports the classical formats with a limited metadata model, it would be desirable to have support for the more advanced formats. This is necessary for users to produce richly annotated data that can be efficiently reused and make underlying workflows easily reproducible. A programming library that abstracts over the data and metadata models of the different formats and allows supporting all of them in one step would significantly simplify the development of new and the extension of existing software to address the need for better metadata annotation. RESULTS: We developed the Java library JPhyloIO, which allows event-based reading and writing of the most common alignment and tree/network formats. It allows full access to all features of the nine currently supported formats. By implementing a single JPhyloIO-based reader and writer, application developers can support all of these formats. Due to the event-based architecture, JPhyloIO can be combined with any application data structure, and is memory efficient for large datasets. JPhyloIO is distributed under LGPL. Detailed documentation and example applications (available on http://bioinfweb.info/JPhyloIO/ ) significantly lower the entry barrier for bioinformaticians who wish to benefit from JPhyloIO's features in their own software. CONCLUSION: JPhyloIO enables simplified development of new and extension of existing applications that support various standard formats simultaneously. This has the potential to improve interoperability between phylogenetic software tools and at the same time motivate usage of more recent metadata-rich formats such as NeXML or phyloXML.

RESUMO

Besides their alleged therapeutic effects, mistletoes of the genus Viscum L. (Viscaceae) are keystone species in many ecosystems across Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia because of their complex faunal interactions. We here reconstructed the evolutionary history of Viscum based on plastid and nuclear DNA sequence data. We obtained a highly resolved phylogenetic tree with ten well-supported clades, which we used to understand the spatio-temporal evolution of these aerial parasites and evaluate the contribution of reproductive switches and shifts in host ranges to their distribution and diversification. The genus Viscum originated in the early Eocene in Africa and appeared to have diversified mainly through geographic isolation, in several cases apparently coinciding with shifts in host preferences. During its evolution, switches in the reproductive mode from ancestral dioecy to monoecy imply an important role in the long-distance dispersal of the parasites from Africa to continental Asia and Australia. We also observed multiple cases of photosynthetic surface reduction (evolution of scale leaves) within the genus, probably indicative of increasing specialization associated with the parasitic lifestyle. Even compared with other parasitic angiosperms, where more host generalists than specialists exist, Viscum species are characterized by extraordinarily broad host ranges. Specialization on only a few hosts from a single family or order occurs rarely and is restricted mostly to very recently evolved lineages. The latter mostly derive from or are closely related to generalist parasites, implying that niche shifting to a new host represents an at least temporary evolutionary advantage in Viscum.
