RESUMO

SETTING: BCG revaccination is not used worldwide. In Brazil, it has been recommended since 1994 in children aged 6 to 14 years. Reports in the medical literature of adverse reactions due to revaccination are rare. BCG revaccination remains officially recommended by the Brazilian health authorities, based on the current epidemiological tuberculosis situation in the country. OBJECTIVE: We report 13 cases of children and adolescents with complications due to BCG revaccination. DESIGN: Case reports of patients followed up in a pneumology unit of a university pediatric hospital from May 1996 to December 2000. RESULTS: There were seven males and six females, whose ages ranged from 7-12 years. Adverse reactions occurred between 21 days and 9 months after BCG revaccination. All 13 cases had a scar from prior BCG vaccination. All cases treated received isoniazid, 10 mg/kg/day, in the morning until the end of cure. The duration of treatment varied, but all cases were successfully cured. CONCLUSION: Although adverse reactions are rare, it is important to continue monitoring them in order to learn more about them and to be able to orient health professionals to perform appropriate assessment and timely treatment when they occur.

RESUMO

An 8-year-old male Boxer with a severely contaminated open fracture of the left radius and ulna fracture, produced by a helicopter propeller, was treated using bone transport by the Ilizarov method. Extensive diaphyseal bone loss and soft-tissue vascular damage were present. The radius and ulna were stabilised with an Ilizarov ring external fixator. The bone defect was partially shortened and restored by gradual transport of a bone segment created from proximal segments of the radius and ulna. The external fixator was removed 4 fi months after the beginning of the latency period, due to instability caused by osteolysis around the wires. A cast was placed for 3 weeks. Although the bone transport had resulted in formation of approximately 4 cm of bone, the antebrachium showed approximately 50% shortening when compared to the contralateral limb. The infection was eradicated, and the dog was able to bear weight on the operated limb when walking.

RESUMO

The Authors present a review of the reports about methods developed in the latest years for screening high caries risk-subjects. They briefly discuss some basic concepts necessary to assess limits and further possibilities of development of such diagnostics methods.

RESUMO

An epidemiological survey has been achieved on elementary and secondary schoolchildren of five different areas in the territory of Ussl no 16 in Lecco. The study, performed on a randomly sample of 458 children aged 6, 10, 12 years, used the epidemiological indexes DMFT/dmft and CPITN to monitor dental and periodontal status. The treatment needs of the subjects was monitored too and the amount of Streptococco mutans in 6 years old schoolchildren, using spittle drawning, was investigated. The results seem to show that the DMFT/dmft values are on a moderate level as regards the European goals, while the amount of dental and periodontal treatment performed is very low. The gingivitis prevalence is high, as well as scaling is required in many children. The analysis of the spittle samples drawned in 6 years old schoolchildren points out high levels of Streptococcus mutans as regard those collected in other similar studies achieved by our Department. According to the results analysis, two sorts of preventive intervention were planned to have the maximum preventive efficacy according to the disease level located in the different areas.
