INTRODUCTION: Previous research has used proxy variables or a unique construct to quantify healthcare access. However, there is a need for a different model that can handle this multivariable problem. This study seeks to develop a way to measure access to the local healthcare system with higher local resolution. METHODS: A new survey was developed based on communitarian claims, following a behavioural model and an ontological framework. The survey was used to identify local barriers to healthcare services and the local preferences for priority settings. The results were analysed using multiattribute utility functions and individual weights were assigned by a panel of experts. National and regional indexes of access to healthcare were developed. RESULTS: The survey contained seven modules and 104 questions. It was conducted on 1885 participants at 42 rural and 231 urban locations in three regions of Chile. The total disutility of the identified barriers to healthcare access at the national level was low (0.1448; values ranged between 0 and 1, with 1 representing a higher barrier) and was higher in the northern region (0.1467). The barriers associated with the health-policy component showed the highest disutility value, and specific barriers for each community were identified. CONCLUSIONS: These results have the potential to improve health decision-making in Chile and can be used to assess the impacts of new health policy reforms. Although this model was tested in Chile, it can be adapted for use in any other country. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Participants contributed to this study by completing a survey, participating in general talks and receiving brochures with the results obtained from this study.

Non-targeted analysis (NTA) workflows using mass spectrometry are gaining popularity in many disciplines, but universally accepted reporting standards are nonexistent. Current guidance addresses limited elements of NTA reporting-most notably, identification confidence-and is insufficient to ensure scientific transparency and reproducibility given the complexity of these methods. This lack of reporting standards hinders researchers' development of thorough study protocols and reviewers' ability to efficiently assess grant and manuscript submissions. To overcome these challenges, we developed the NTA Study Reporting Tool (SRT), an easy-to-use, interdisciplinary framework for comprehensive NTA methods and results reporting. Eleven NTA practitioners reviewed eight published articles covering environmental, food, and health-based exposomic applications with the SRT. Overall, our analysis demonstrated that the SRT provides a valid structure to guide study design and manuscript writing, as well as to evaluate NTA reporting quality. Scores self-assigned by authors fell within the range of peer-reviewer scores, indicating that SRT use for self-evaluation will strengthen reporting practices. The results also highlighted NTA reporting areas that need immediate improvement, such as analytical sequence and quality assurance/quality control information. Although scores intentionally do not correspond to data/results quality, widespread implementation of the SRT could improve study design and standardize reporting practices, ultimately leading to broader use and acceptance of NTA data.

The Kondo effect results from the interactions of the conduction electrons in a metal bulk with localized magnetic impurities. While adsorbed atop a metallic surface, the on-surface nanoscale version of this effect is observed when a single magnetic atom or a single magnetic molecule (SMM) is interacting with the conduction electrons. SMMs are commonly organometallic complexes incorporating transition-metal atoms in different oxidation states. We demonstrate how a single nonmagnetic neutral tetrabenzo[a,c,j,h]phenazine molecule can be on-surface-coordinated with exactly two aluminum metal atoms (between Al(I) and Al(II) oxidation state on the Au(111) surface) by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) single-atom manipulation. It results in a Kondo measurable localized molecular magnetic moment. This opens a new way to design SMM complexes without the need for heavy transition-metal atoms and complex ligands to stabilize the molecular coordination sphere.

This work presents a study on the use of wood and plastic wastes generated in abundance in Merida, Mexico, to help to reduce them in order to mitigate environmental deterioration. The use of these wastes is proposed to obtain a low-cost building material. So, the escalation process (i.e., extrusion) at the pilot level to obtain a prototype of a wood-plastic composite (WPC) corrugated sheet to evaluate the technical feasibility to make a low-cost product is reported. A corrugated sheet with recycled high-density polyethylene (R-HDPE) was produced. The R-HDPE was collected from Merida's Separation Plant. The wood came from the trimmings of different varieties of trees and shrubs that are periodically pruned. WPC sheets with virgin HDPE were prepared to assess its effect on the materials' mechanical performance. The wood/HDPE weight ratio was 40/60. The performance of the WPC sheets was compared with that of commercial products with similar characteristics, namely acrylic and polyester sheets reinforced with fibreglass, and black asphalt-saturated cardboard sheets. Thus, the effect of natural weathering on the maximum tensile tearing force and on the maximum flexural load of the different types of sheets was evaluated. Although the mechanical performance of the WPC sheets was lower than that of the acrylic and polyacrylic sheets, their performance was much better than that of the cheap black asphalt-saturated cardboard sheets. So, they are a good option to be used as low-cost temporary roofing.

The performance of silicon wristband passive samplers (WB), combined with comprehensive two-dimensional gas-chromatography/time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (GC × GC/ToF-MS), for the analysis of urban derived pollutants in the personal environment was evaluated. Cumulative 5-day exposure samples from 27 individuals in areas with different geographical/socioeconomic characteristics within the Santiago Metropolitan Region (Chile) were collected during winter and summer (2016-2017). Samples were extracted without cleanup/fractionation and analyzed using targeted and nontargeted methods. The quantified semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs, n = 33) (targeted analysis), and tentatively identified features ( n = 595-1011) (nontargeted analysis) were classified according to their use/source. Seasonal differences were observed in the targeted analysis, while seasonal and spatial differences were observed in the nontargeted analysis. Higher concentrations of combustion products were observed in winter, while higher concentrations of consumer products were found in summer. Spatial differences were observed in hierarchical clustering analysis of the nontargeted data, with distinct clusters corresponding to specific subregions of the urban area. Results from this study provide spatial and seasonal distributions of urban pollutants within an urban area and establish the utility of linking WB with nontargeted analysis as a tool to identify and prioritize new exposures to urban contaminants at the local/community level.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) can have multiple sources in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR). The current study was designed to identify and explore the potential of nitrogen heterocyclic PACs (NPACs) as source indicators in snowpack, lake sediment and passive air samples from the AOSR during 2014-2015. Source samples including petroleum coke (petcoke), haul road dust, and unprocessed oil sands were also analyzed. Samples were analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography-high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Over 200 NPACs were identified and classified into at least 24 isomer groups, including alkylated carbazoles, benzocarbazoles, and indenoquinolines. Levels of NPACs in environmental samples decreased with distance from the main developments and with increasing depth in lake sediments but were detected within 50 km from the major developments. The composition profiles of several NPAC isomer classes, such as dimethylcarbazoles, showed that petcoke had a distinct distribution of NPACs compared to the haul road dust and unprocessed oil sands ores and was the most similar source material to near-field environmental samples. These results suggest that petcoke is a major contributing source for the identified NPACs and that these compounds have the potential to be used as source indicators for future research in the AOSR.

The aromatic fractions of snow, lake sediment, and air samples collected during 2011-2014 in the Athabasca oil sands region were analyzed using two-dimensional gas chromatography following a nontargeted approach. Commonly monitored aromatics (parent and alkylated-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dibenzothiophenes) were excluded from the analysis, focusing mainly on other heterocyclic aromatics. The unknowns detected were classified into isomeric groups and tentatively identified using mass spectral libraries. Relative concentrations of heterocyclic aromatics were estimated and were found to decrease with distance from a reference site near the center of the developments and with increasing depth of sediments. The same heterocyclic aromatics identified in snow, lake sediments, and air were observed in extracts of delayed petroleum coke, with similar distributions. This suggests that petroleum coke particles are a potential source of heterocyclic aromatics to the local environment, but other oil sands sources must also be considered. Although the signals of these heterocyclic aromatics diminished with distance, some were detected at large distances (>100 km) in snow and surface lake sediments, suggesting that the impact of industry can extend >50 km. The list of heterocyclic aromatics and the mass spectral library generated in this study can be used for future source apportionment studies.

Atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) via and onto snow, and their releasing during spring snowmelt has been a concern in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region of Alberta. This study was designed to evaluate the concentrations, loadings, and distribution of PACs in springtime snowpack and how they have changed since the first study in 2008. Snowpack samples were collected in late winters 2011-2014 at varying distances from the main developments. PAC concentration and deposition declined exponentially with distance, with pyrenes, chrysenes, and dibenzothiophenes dominating the distribution within the first 50 km. The distribution of PACs was different between sites located close to upgraders and others located close to mining facilities. Overall, PAC loadings were correlated with priority pollutant elements and water chemistry parameters, while wind direction and speed were not strong contributors to the variability observed. Total PAC mass deposition during winter months and within the first 50 km was initially estimated by integrating the exponential decay function fitted through the data using a limited number of sites from 2011 to 2014: 1236 kg (2011), 1800 kg (2012), 814 kg (2013), and 1367 (2014). Total loadings were estimated to have a twofold increase between 2008 and 2014, although the increase observed was not constant. Finally, kriging interpolation is presented as an alternative and more robust approach to estimate PAC mass deposition in the area. After a more intensive sampling campaign in 2014, the PAC mass deposition was estimated to be 1968 kg.

Assessing the impact of mining activity on the availability of environmental pollutants is crucial for informing health policies in anticipation of future production scenarios of critical minerals essential for the transition to a net-zero carbon society. However, temporal and spatial monitoring is often sparse, and measurements may not extend far enough back in time. In this study, we utilize variations of chemical elements contained in tree-rings collected in local villages from an area heavily affected by copper mining in the Atacama Desert since the early 20th century to evaluate the temporal distribution of pollutants and their relationship with local drivers. By combining time-varying data on local drivers, such as copper production and the dry tailings deposit area, we show how the surge in copper production during the 1990s, fueled by trade liberalization and increased international demand, led to a significant increment in the availability of metal(loid)s related to mining activities on indigenous lands. Our findings suggest that the environmental legislation in Chile may be underestimating the environmental impact of tailing dams in neighboring populations, affecting the well-being of Indigenous Peoples from the Atacama mining hotspot region. We argue that future changes in production rates driven by international demand could have negative repercussions on the environment and local communities. Therefore, mining emissions and the management of tailing dams should be carefully considered to anticipate their potential negative effects on human and ecosystem health.

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, a condition that remains relatively underrecognized, has garnered increasing research focus in recent years. This scientific interest has catalyzed advancements in diagnostic methodologies, enabling comprehensive clinical and molecular profiling. Such progress facilitates the development of personalized treatment strategies, marking a significant step toward precision medicine for these patients. Bronchiectasis poses significant diagnostic challenges in both clinical settings and research studies. While computed tomography (CT) remains the gold standard for diagnosis, novel alternatives are emerging. These include artificial intelligence-powered algorithms, ultra-low dose chest CT, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, all of which are becoming recognized as feasible diagnostic tools. The precision medicine paradigm calls for refined characterization of bronchiectasis patients by analyzing their inflammatory and molecular profiles. Research into the underlying mechanisms of inflammation and the evaluation of biomarkers such as neutrophil elastase, mucins, and antimicrobial peptides have led to the identification of distinct patient endotypes. These endotypes present variable clinical outcomes, necessitating tailored therapeutic interventions. Among these, eosinophilic bronchiectasis is notable for its prevalence and specific prognostic factors, calling for careful consideration of treatable traits. A deeper understanding of the microbiome's influence on the pathogenesis and progression of bronchiectasis has inspired a holistic approach, which considers the multibiome as an interconnected microbial network rather than treating pathogens as solitary entities. Interactome analysis therefore becomes a vital tool for pinpointing alterations during both stable phases and exacerbations. This array of innovative approaches has revolutionized the personalization of treatments, incorporating therapies such as inhaled mannitol or ARINA-1, brensocatib for anti-inflammatory purposes, and inhaled corticosteroids specifically for patients with eosinophilic bronchiectasis.


Las bronquiectasias no fibrosis quística han atraído una creciente atención en investigación. Este interés científico ha catalizado avances en las metodologías de diagnóstico, permitiendo realizar perfiles clínicos y moleculares integrales. Este progreso facilita el desarrollo de estrategias de tratamiento personalizadas y marca un paso significativo hacia la medicina de precisión.Desde el punto de vista diagnóstico, las bronquiectasias plantean desafíos importantes en entornos clínicos y de investigación. Si bien la TC es el gold standard, están surgiendo nuevas alternativas. Entre ellas, algoritmos de inteligencia artificial, TC de tórax de dosis ultrabajas y técnicas de resonancia magnética.La medicina de precisión aboga por la caracterización de pacientes mediante análisis de perfiles inflamatorios y moleculares. Las investigaciones sobre mecanismos subyacentes de inflamación y la evaluación de biomarcadores como la elastasa de neutrófilos, mucinas y péptidos antimicrobianos, han llevado a la identificación de endotipos de pacientes. Estos endotipos exhiben resultados clínicos variables, requiriendo intervenciones terapéuticas personalizadas. La bronquiectasia eosinofílica destaca por su prevalencia y factores pronósticos específicos, exigiendo consideración de los rasgos tratables.Una comprensión profunda de la influencia del microbioma en la patogénesis y progresión de las bronquiectasias inspira un enfoque holístico. Considera el multibioma como una red microbiana interconectada, no entidades solitarias. AIM: To develop and validate a self-administered population-specific survey, available in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, which investigates the prevalence of voice symptoms and perceptions of risk factors associated with training among prospective teachers. METHODS: The present study had three stages: the first stage included a literature review and content validation by experts that supported the survey development. From this phase, we defined five aspects of the Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ): (1) target population, (2) research objectives, (3) questions to be included, (4) scales for the answers, and (5) relevance, comprehensiveness, clarityclarity, and understandability of the questions. This process was performed in parallel for the three languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and English). The second stage included pilot testing. This involved administering the first draft of the survey to a group of 120 students to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the survey instrument, identify any potential problems with the survey, and refine the instrument based on feedback from the pilot participants. The third stage includes the restructuring of the questionnaire's voice quality section to eliminate redundant questions. Through Principal Component Analysis, multicollinear variables were condensed, facilitating the removal of redundant items, and ensuring that the final questionnaire comprised only the most relevant and discriminative questions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The final version of the survey, available in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, consists of four sections with a total of 57 questions. The development of the PTVQ represents a significant step toward better understanding and addressing voice disorders among prospective teachers. Future research could further refine the questionnaire and explore its predictive validity in identifying individuals at risk of voice disorders early in their teaching careers. Additionally, interventions based on the findings from the PTVQ could be developed to support the voice health and well-being of prospective teachers, ultimately improving teaching quality and job satisfaction in educational settings.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on virgin polystyrene (PS) and PS marine debris led us to examine PS as a source and sink for PAHs in the marine environment. At two locations in San Diego Bay, we measured sorption of PAHs to PS pellets, sampling at 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. We detected 25 PAHs using a new analytical method with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Several congeners were detected on samples before deployment. After deployment, some concentrations decreased (1,3-dimethylnaphthalene and 2,6-methylnaphthalene), while most increased [2-methylanthracene and all parent PAHs (PPAHs), except fluorene and fluoranthene], suggesting that PS debris is a source and sink for PAHs. When sorbed concentrations of PPAHs on PS are compared to the five most common polymers [polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and polypropylene (PP)], PS sorbed greater concentrations than PP, PET, and PVC, similar to HDPE and LDPE. Most strikingly, at 0 months, PPAHs on PS ranged from 8 to 200 times greater than on PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, and PP. The combination of greater PAHs in virgin pellets and large sorption suggests that PS may pose a greater risk of exposure to PAHs upon ingestion.

Agriculture is one of the main economic activities in Chile and is associated with extensive use of pesticides, which can represent a risk to the environment and to human health. Currently, there are over 400 pesticides approved for commerce in Chile, including chemicals banned in other countries (e.g., flocoumafen and chlorfenapyr). An empirical analysis of their potential environmental effects is difficult due to this large number, thus opening the doors for the use of computational tools for prioritization efforts based on their persistence, bioaccumulation, and transport potential in the environment. The main objectives of this study were to estimate the properties and environmental distribution of pesticides approved for commerce in Chile and to generate a priority list for further evaluation in local environments. We used the Estimation Program Interface Suite interface to estimate the distribution coefficients, half-lives, and bioaccumulation potential of all pesticides registered in the Chilean Agriculture and Livestock Services. Additionally, the Pov & LRTP Screening Tool was used to estimate their overall persistence and long-range transport potential in the environment. The results were used to develop a P-B-lon range transport (LRT) score, which considered persistence, bioaccumulation, and long-range transport potential. All pesticides were compared to a group of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), used as reference compounds, to generate a list of priority pesticides with persistent organic pollutants characteristics. The results showed that most pesticides were distributed between the organic phase and water, where they also showed the longest half-lives and bioaccumulation potential. A group of 21 pesticides showed relatively high P-B-LRT scores, compared to PCBs, and were classified as priority compounds. Bottled water has emerged as a possible healthier alternative due to concerns about the quality of drinking water sources. However, recent studies have detected worrying concentrations of environmental contaminants in bottled water, including microplastics. Therefore, it is an emerging need to quantify their concentrations in local suppliers which could differ among countries and regions. In this work, we used fluorescence microscopy with Nile Red for the identification and quantification of potential microplastics in twelve brands of bottled water distributed in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile. The average concentration of microplastics was 391 ± 125 p L-1, while the highest concentration observed was 633 ± 33 p L-1. Microplastics between 5 and 20 µm were the major contributors, a size fraction that has been reported to be susceptible to accumulate in the digestive tract or generate potential alterations in the lymphatic and circulatory systems. The estimated daily intake value for per capita was estimated to be 229 p kg-1 year-1 for people weighing 65 kg and 198 p kg-1 year-1 for those weighing 75 kg.

Oxidative potential (OP) has gained attention as a parameter that can reveal the ability of different properties of particulate matter (PM) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) as one single value. Moreover, OP is also believed to be a predictor of toxicity and hence the health effects of PM. This study evaluated the OP of PM10, PM2.5,and PM1.0samples using dithiothreitol assays in two cities of Chile (Santiago and Chillán). The results showed that the OP was different between cities, PM size fractions, and seasons. Additionally, OP was strongly correlated with certain metals and meteorological variables. Higher mass-normalized OP was observed during cold periods in Chillán and warm periods in Santiago and was associated with PM2.5 and PM1. On the other hand, volume-normalized OP was higher during winter in both cities and for PM10. Additionally, we compared the OP values to the Air Quality Index (AQI) scale and found cases of days that were classified as having "good" air quality (supposed to be less harmful to health) showing extremely high OP values that were similar to those on days that were classified as "unhealthy". Based on these results,we suggest using the OP as a complementary measure to the PM mass concentration because it includes important new information related to PM properties and compositions that could help improvecurrent air quality management tools.

Over the past 2 decades, scientific evidence has strongly supported the use of low-radiation dose chest computed tomography (CT) as a screening technique for lung cancer. This approach has resulted in a significant reduction in mortality rates by enabling the detection of early-stage lung cancer amenable to potentially curative treatments. Regarding diagnosis, there are also novel methods under study, such as liquid biopsy, identification of the pulmonary microbiome, and the use of artificial intelligence techniques, which will play a key role in the near future. At present, there is a growing trend towards less invasive surgical procedures, such as segmentectomy, as an alternative to lobectomy. This procedure is based on 2 recent clinical trials conducted on peripheral tumors measuring less than 2 cm. Although these approaches have demonstrated comparable survival rates, there remains controversy due to uncertainties surrounding recurrence rates and functional capacity preservation. With regard to adjuvant therapy, immunotherapy, either as a monotherapy or in conjunction with chemotherapy, has shown encouraging results in resectable stages of locally advanced lung cancer, demonstrating complete pathologic responses and improved overall survival.After surgery treatment, despite the lack of solid evidence for long-term follow-up of these patients, clinical practice recommends periodic CT scans during the early years.In conclusion, there have been significant advances in lung cancer that have improved diagnostic techniques using new technologies and screening programs. Furthermore, the treatment of lung cancer is increasingly personalized, resulting in an improvement in the survival of patients.

Non-targeted analysis (NTA) and suspect screening analysis (SSA) are powerful techniques that rely on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and computational tools to detect and identify unknown or suspected chemicals in the exposome. Fully understanding the chemical exposome requires characterization of both environmental media and human specimens. As such, we conducted a review to examine the use of different NTA and SSA methods in various exposure media and human samples, including the results and chemicals detected. The literature review was conducted by searching literature databases, such as PubMed and Web of Science, for keywords, such as "non-targeted analysis", "suspect screening analysis" and the exposure media. Sources of human exposure to environmental chemicals discussed in this review include water, air, soil/sediment, dust, and food and consumer products. The use of NTA for exposure discovery in human biospecimen is also reviewed. The chemical space that has been captured using NTA varies by media analyzed and analytical platform. In each media the chemicals that were frequently detected using NTA were: per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals in water, pesticides and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and sediment, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in air, flame retardants in dust, plasticizers in consumer products, and plasticizers, pesticides, and halogenated compounds in human samples. Some studies reviewed herein used both liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) HRMS to increase the detected chemical space (16%); however, the majority (51%) only used LC-HRMS and fewer used GC-HRMS (32%). Finally, we identify knowledge and technology gaps that must be overcome to fully assess potential chemical exposures using NTA. Understanding the chemical space is essential to identifying and prioritizing gaps in our understanding of exposure sources and prior exposures. IMPACT STATEMENT: This review examines the results and chemicals detected by analyzing exposure media and human samples using high-resolution mass spectrometry based non-targeted analysis (NTA) and suspect screening analysis (SSA).

Complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are difficult to resolve because of the high degree of overlap in compound vapor pressures, boiling points, and mass spectral fragmentation patterns. The objective of this research was to improve the separation of complex PAH mixtures (including 97 different parent, alkyl-, nitro-, oxy-, thio-, chloro-, bromo-, and high molecular weight PAHs) using GC × GC/ToF-MS by maximizing the orthogonality of different GC column combinations and improving the separation of PAHs from the sample matrix interferences, including unresolved complex mixtures (UCM). Four different combinations of nonpolar, polar, liquid crystal, and nanostationary phase columns were tested. Each column combination was optimized and evaluated for orthogonality using a method based on conditional entropy that considers the quantitative peak distribution in the entire 2D space. Finally, an atmospheric particulate matter with diameter <2.5 µm (PM(2.5)) sample from Beijing, China, a soil sample from St. Maries Creosote Superfund Site, and a sediment sample from the Portland Harbor Superfund Site were analyzed for complex mixtures of PAHs. The highest chromatographic resolution, lowest synentropy, highest orthogonality, and lowest interference from UCM were achieved using a 10 m × 0.15 mm × 0.10 µm LC-50 liquid crystal column in the first dimension and a 1.2 m × 0.10 mm × 0.10 µm NSP-35 nanostationary phase column in the second dimension. In addition, the use of this column combination in GC × GC/ToF-MS resulted in significantly shorter analysis times (176 min) for complex PAH mixtures compared to 1D GC/MS (257 min), as well as potentially reduced sample preparation time.

Indigenous communities from northern Chile have historically been exposed to the impacts of massive copper industrial activities conducted in the region. Some of the communities belonging to the Alto El Loa Indigenous Development Area are located less than 10 km from the "Talabre'' tailings dam, which contains residues from copper production and other metals that can be toxic to human health (e.g., As, Sb, Cd, Mo, Pb). Given the increasing demand of copper production to achieve net-zero emission scenarios and concomitant expansions of the tailings, the exposure to toxic metals is a latent risk to local communities. Despite the impact that copper production could generate on ancestral communities from northern Chile, studies and monitoring are limited and the results are often not made accessible for local communities. Here, we evaluate such risks by characterizing metal concentrations in dust collected from roofs and windows of houses from the Alto El Loa area. Our results showed that As, Sb, Cd, Cu, Mo, Ag, S, and Pb concentrations in these matrices can be connected to local copper mining activities. Additionally, air transport models indicate that high concentrations of toxic elements (As, Sb, and Cd) can be explained by the atmospheric transport of particles from the tailings in a NE direction up to 50 km away. Pollution indices and Health Risk Assessment suggested a highly contaminated region with a health risk for its inhabitants. Our analysis on a local scale seeks to make visible the case of northern Chile as a critical territory where actions should be taken to mitigate the effects of mining in the face of this new scenario of international demand for the raw materials necessary for the transition to a net-zero carbon global society.

To further explore the structural features and potential antibacterial and antitumor activities of polynuclear CuII coordination compounds with nalidixic acid (nx) derivatives, new complexes bearing nx hydrazones with N-pyridinyl moieties substituted at positions 2 and 3 (h2py and h3py) were synthesized. Complexes [Cu3(C18H16N5O2)2(C18H17N5O2)2(H2O)]4BF4∙H2O (1), and [Cu3(C18H16N5O2)2(C18H17N5O2)2(H2O)3]4BF4∙3H2O (%) (2) were synthesized using h2py and h3py with Cu(BF4)2∙nH2O as precursor, whereas the [Cu(C18H17N5O2)Cl2]∙0.5H2O complex (3) was synthesized with h2py and CuCl2∙2H2O. Crystallographic studies of complex 1, showed that coordination of hydrazones to CuII occurs by tridentate modes of type κ3(O,N,N') as well as bidentate modes of type κ2(O',N″). Complexes 1, 2 and 3 had their antiproliferative activities evaluated in vitro against a panel of tumor cells by the determination of GI50 values. Complexes 1 and 2 were more active than complex 3, suggesting an effect of the complex charge on their activities. The interactions of such complexes towards bovine serum albumin (BSA) and DNA plasmid (pGEX-4 T1) were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and gel electrophoresis. All complexes were shown to interact with the DNA model as metallonucleases, but no interaction with BSA was observed. DNA molecular docking of complex 1 encompassing both its trinuclear (TN) form and a possible mononuclear (MN) derivative suggests that naphthyridyl ring performs π-stacking interactions with DNA. The TN species were also shown to be possible minor groove binders.
