RESUMO

PURPOSE: Growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas (GH-PAs) with a low Knosp grade are typically associated with a good postoperative biochemical remission (BR) rate. However, a proportion of patients do not achieve remission. In this study, we aimed to investigate predictive factors of postoperative remission for lower Knosp GH-PAs. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we enrolled 140 patients who were diagnosed with lower Knosp (0-2) GH-PAs and received trans-sphenoidal surgery between December 2016 and June 2021 from the largest pituitary tumor surgery center in southern China. The univariate, binary Logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were employed to determine independent predictors and cutoff values of remission. The postoperative outcome was defined as remission using the 2010 consensus criteria of acromegaly. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty six patients (97.1%) achieved gross total resection. The postoperative long-term BR was 68.6%. Empty sella, tumor maximum diameter and postoperative GH levels were independent factors predicting remission. ROC revealed that postoperative 24 h GH ≤ 1.3 ng/mL and ≤ 1.23 ng/mL were valuable predictors for 3-month and long-term remission respectively, and that postoperative 3-month GH ≤ 1.6 ng/mL and tumor maximum diameter ≤ 17 mm were predictors for delayed remission. CONCLUSION: Early postoperative GH levels can be used as predictors of remission. However, BR was not associated with preoperative somatostatin analogs therapy or Knosp grade (0-2). For patients without residual tumor or recurrence and whose GH levels are slightly elevated within 1 year after surgery, adjuvant treatments may not be necessary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the relationships of serum testosterone with dyslipidemia and blood lipid levels and test whether obesity mediated these associations by gender in Chinese rural population. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 6150 subjects were finally analyzed in this study. Serum testosterone for each subject was detected by liquid chromatography equipped with tandem mass spectrometry. Logistic regression and linear regression were employed to evaluate the associations of serum testosterone with the prevalence of dyslipidemia and blood lipid levels. Mediation analysis was conducted to identify the mediation effects of obesity on the relationship between serum testosterone and dyslipidemia. After adjusting for multiple confounders, per unit change in serum ln-testosterone levels was associated with a decreased prevalent dyslipidemia in men (odds ratio (OR): 0.785, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.708, 0.871)). Males with the levels of serum testosterone in the third or fourth quartiles had a 49.4% (OR: 0.506, 95% CI 0.398, 0.644) or 67.1% (OR: 0.329, 95% CI 0.253, 0.428) significantly lower odds of prevalence of dyslipidemia. In addition, a onefold increase in ln-testosterone was related to a 0.043 mmol/L (95% CI 0.028, 0.059) increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in men. Results of the mediation analysis suggested that obesity played a partial role in the association of testosterone with dyslipidemia in men. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that serum testosterone levels were negatively associated with lipid levels and prevalent dyslipidemia, and obesity mediated the effects of serum testosterone on dyslipidemia in men, implying that obesity prevention should be highlighted to decrease the prevalence of dyslipidemia related to changes in testosterone levels.

RESUMO

Apple replant disease (ARD) caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium proliferatum f. sp. malus domestica (Fpmd) MR5 brings annual losses to apple production within China. However, the genomic information of the pathogen is not yet available. Here, we obtained the whole-genome sequence of the highly virulent Fpmd MR5 using the Illumina PE150 platform. The genome size was 42.76 Mb and consisted of 9,047 genes. The GC content was 48.80%, and several genes potentially associated with pathogenicity were identified, such as carbohydrate-active enzymes, secreted proteins, and secondary metabolite gene clusters. There were 260 specific virulence factor genes, mainly related to fungal vegetative growth and the production of cell wall-degrading enzymes. These data will aid future studies investigating host-pathogen interactions and help us develop suitable disease management strategies.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the clinical value of bedaquiline in five dimensions: effectiveness, safety, economics, appropriateness, and social benefits, to provide a reference for medical and health insurance-related decisions. Methods: A total of 792 patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis who were hospitalized at Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital, Ganzhou Fifth People's Hospital and Jiangxi Chest Hospital between January 2018 and December 2020 were included in the study. Based on a retrospective survey of case data, and each evaluation dimension of bedaquiline was statistically analyzed by causal analysis or chi-square test, using linezolid as the reference drug. Results: In terms of effectiveness, bedaquiline significantly increased treatment success by 23.9% (95%CI:4.8%-43.0%) and shortened treatment duration by 64 days(95%CI:18-109 days). In terms of safety, the incidence of adverse reactions to bedaquiline and the discontinuation rate of adverse reactions (5.11%,4.55%) were significantly lower than those for linezolid (22.49%,15.24%), with statistically significant differences (χ2=27.50,P<0.001;χ2=14.09,P<0.001). In terms of economics, patients treated with bedaquiline had a significantly higher anti-TB drug course cost of RMB 48 209.4 Yuan(95%CI: 28 336.0-68 082.8 Yuan). In terms of appropriateness, the proportion of bedaquiline in patients' initial treatment regimens was lower than that of linezolid (16.7% vs. 86.5%) in the 2020 observation sample, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=238.96,P<0.001). In terms of social benefits, the infection control rate was significantly increased by 27.8% (95%CI:8.2%-47.5%) in patients using bedaquiline. Conclusions: Bedaquiline performed well in terms of efficacy, safety, and social benefits. However, it was less economical and the actual use rate of bedaquiline in clinical practice was lower than that of its counterpart drug, linezolid. Price reductions might be needed to increase the clinical use and performance of bedaquiline in the future.

RESUMO

Apple replant disease (ARD) is the most serious threat facing the apple industry globally. ARD is mainly manifested as decreased plant growth, serious root rot disease, and considerable yield loss. Microbial factors are the dominant factors leading to the occurrence of ARD. Research on soil-borne pathogenic fungi leading to the occurrence of ARD in China is limited. In the present study, we selected 16 replanting orchards from the Northwest Loess region and around the Bohai Gulf. Diseased roots and rhizosphere soil from healthy apple trees and trees showing ARD symptoms were sampled at random. High-throughput sequencing was used to study the fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil, which showed that the composition of the rhizosphere soil fungal community of ARD-symptomatic and healthy apple trees was different. Nectriaceae at the family level and Fusarium at the genus level dominated the rhizosphere soil fungal community in the two regions, while for healthy apple trees, the relative abundance of Mortierella, Minimedusa, Tetracladium, and Chaetomium was higher. Tissue separation and serial dilution were used to separate fungi, and a total of 89 genera and 219 species were obtained, most of which were Fusarium. Fusarium was further confirmed to be the most abundant pathogen species leading to the occurrence of ARD in China through pathogenicity assays. A pathogenicity assay was carried out by the dip-and-cut technique using different host plants. It was found that Fusarium MR5 showed strong aggressiveness to apple rootstocks. Diseased seedlings specifically exhibited chlorosis of the leaves, browning from the edge of the leaf, followed by rolling and yellowing of the leaves, resulting in wilting and eventually death. Strain MR5 was preliminarily identified as F. proliferatum according to the morphological and cultural characteristics. A maximum likelihood analysis of identities based on six gene sequence (ITS, TUB2, IGS, mtSSU, RPB2, and the TEF gene) alignments between the MR5 strain and other strains showed 99 to 100% homology with F. proliferatum. Based on our test results, strain MR5 was identified as F. proliferatum f. sp. malus domestica, which is of great significance for finding new measures to control ARD in China.

RESUMO

Objective: To characterize the histopathological subtypes and their clinicopathological parameters of gender and onset age by common, rare and sparse primary esophageal malignant tumors (PEMT). Methods: A total of 272 437 patients with PEMT were enrolled in this study, and all of the patients were received radical surgery. The clinicopathological information of the patients was obtained from the database established by the State Key Laboratory of Esophageal Cancer Prevention & Treatment from September 1973 to December 2020, which included the clinical treatment, pathological diagnosis and follow-up information of esophagus and gastric cardia cancers. All patients were diagnosed and classified by the criteria of esophageal tumor histopathological diagnosis and classification (2019) of the World Health Organization (WHO). The esophageal tumors, which were not included in the WHO classification, were analyzed separately according to the postoperative pathological diagnosis. The χ2 test was performed by the SPSS 25.0 software on count data, and the test standard α=0.05. Results: A total of 32 histopathological types were identified in the enrolled PEMT patients, of which 10 subtypes were not included in the WHO classification. According to the frequency, PEMT were divided into common (esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, ESCC, accounting for 97.1%), rare (esophageal adenocarcinoma, EAC, accounting for 2.3%) and sparse (mainly esophageal small cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, etc., accounting for 0.6%). All the common, rare, and sparse types occurred predominantly in male patients, and the gender difference of rare type was most significant (EAC, male∶ female, 2.67∶1), followed with common type (ESCC, male∶ female, 1.78∶1) and sparse type (male∶ female, 1.71∶1). The common type (ESCC) mainly occurred in the middle thoracic segment (65.2%), while the rare type (EAC) mainly occurred in the lower thoracic segment (56.8%). Among the sparse type, malignant melanoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma were both predominantly located in the lower thoracic segment (51.7%, 66.7%), and the others were mainly in the middle thoracic segment. Conclusion: ESCC is the most common type among the 32 histopathological types of PEMT, followed by EAC as the rare type, and esophageal small cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma as the major sparse type, and all of which are mainly occur in male patients. The common type of ESCC mainly occur in the middle thoracic segment, while the rare type of EAC mainly in the lower thoracic segment. The mainly sparse type of malignant melanoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma predominately occur in the lower thoracic segment, and the remaining sparse types mainly occur in the middle thoracic segment.

RESUMO

One or a few layers of van der Waals (vdW) materials are promising for applications in nanoscale electronics. Established properties include high mobility in graphene, a large direct gap in monolayer MoS2, the quantum spin Hall effect in monolayer WTe2 and so on. These exciting properties arise from electron quantum confinement in the two-dimensional limit. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal directional massless Dirac fermions due to one-dimensional confinement of carriers in the layered vdW material NbSi0.45Te2. The one-dimensional directional massless Dirac fermions are protected by non-symmorphic symmetry, and emerge from a stripe-like structural modulation with long-range translational symmetry only along the stripe direction as we show using scanning tunnelling microscopy. Our work not only provides a playground for investigating further the properties of directional massless Dirac fermions, but also introduces a unique component with one-dimensional long-range order for engineering nano-electronic devices based on heterostructures of vdW materials.

RESUMO

Trapped ions are one of the leading platforms in quantum information science. For quantum computing with large circuit depth and quantum simulation with long evolution time, it is of crucial importance to cool large ion crystals at runtime without affecting the internal states of the computational qubits, thus the necessity of sympathetic cooling. Here, we report multi-ion sympathetic cooling on a long ion chain using a narrow cooling beam focused on two adjacent ions, and optimize the choice of the cooling ions according to the collective oscillation modes of the chain. We show that, by cooling a small fraction of ions, cooling effects close to the global Doppler cooling limit can be achieved. This experiment therefore demonstrates an important enabling step for quantum information processing with large ion crystals.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the associations of morning serum cortisol levels with obesity defined by different indices in Chinese rural populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed including 6198 participants (2566 males and 3632 females). Serum cortisol was collected in morning and quantified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Obesity was defined by body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), visceral fat index (VFI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Both multivariable liner regression, logistic regression and restrictive cubic splines models were used to estimate the gender-specific relationships between cortisol levels and obesity defined by different indices, respectively. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounders, serum cortisol was negatively associated with different obesity measures, except obese females defined by BFP (for instance, overall obesity defined by BMI, Quartile 4 vs. Quartile 1, odds ratio (OR) = 0.25, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.15, 0.41 in males, and OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.42,0.80 in females, central obesity defined by WC, OR = 0.52, 95% CI:0.39,0.69 in males and OR = 0.63, 95% CI:0.51,0.77 in females). Similarly, restrictive cubic splines showed the nonlinear relationship between high levels of cortisol and different obesity indices. Furthermore, ROC curve analysis indicated that cortisol could improve the discrimination of model with common biomarkers. CONCLUSION: Morning serum cortisol were negatively related to obesity defined by different indices in Chinese rural populations. In addition, cortisol could be as a biomarker for prediction of obesity in males.

RESUMO

Objective: To validate the accuracy and consistency of a previously established prediction model for the occurrence of hyperkalemia in non-dialytic chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods: All patients diagnosed with CKD from Outpatient Department of Shanghai Changzheng Hospital during the 4th quarter of 2020 were recruited. Demographic data, clinical characteristics and prediction model-related parameters of the patients were collected and analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to evaluate the effectiveness of the model, and the specificity and sensitivity were calculated based on the cut-off value of 4 obtained from the previous model. The improved Hanley method was used to compare the area under the curve (AUC) between the previously established model and current validation dataset. The calibration curve was drawn to verify the model calibration degree. Results: A total of 434 patients diagnosed with non-dialytic CKD were enrolled, among whom 233 were males and 201 were females, with an average age of (55±16) years. According to the measured serum potassium values, the prevalence of hyperkalemia was 7.6%. And 33 patients were allocated to the hyperkalemia group and 401 patients were to the normal potassium group. There was no significant difference in age and sex between the two groups (both P>0.05). A combination of hyperkalemia and heart failure (27.3% vs 3.7%, P<0.001), diabetes (42.4% vs 19.7%, P=0.002), and acidosis (51.5% vs 7.0%, P<0.001) were more frequently in the hyperkalemia group, compared with the normal serum potassium group. Patients in the hyperkalemia group were more likely to have a past history of serum potassium ≥5.0 mmol/L (48.5% vs 2.5%, P<0.001). For the drugs that could increase serum potassium levels, there was a significant correlation between Chinese herbal medicine and the occurrence of hyperkalemia, while renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) and potassium supplementation showed no significant difference between the two groups. The results of ROC curve analysis showed that the AUC was 0.914, with the sensitivity of 84.8% and the specificity of 79.8% with the cut-off value of 4. The difference of AUC between the previously established risk assessment model of hyperkalemia in patients with non-dialytic CKD and current validation dataset was not statistically significant (Z=1.924, P=0.054), indicating the good accuracy and consistency of the prediction model. In the calibration curve, when the predicted risk of patients was below 0.4 or above 0.6, the prediction effect of the model was better. Conclusion: The previously-constructed hyperkalemia prediction model in non-dialytic CKD patients had good accuracy and consistency, and could be used to evaluate the risk of hyperkalemia in all stages of non-dialytic CKD patients.

RESUMO

Objective: To screen the differential proteomic of plasma exosomes before and after magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (MgIG) treatment in chronic hepatitis B patients. Methods: Plasma samples were collected from 36 cases with chronic hepatitis B before and after MgIG treatment (2 ml/case). Plasma exosomes were extracted by ultracentrifugation. Exosomal particles concentration and inner diameter were detected by Nanosight NS300 particle size analyzer. Three cases of plasma exosomes were randomly selected before and after MgIG treatment. Proteins were extracted after lysis and digested with trypsin. Label-free differential proteomics analysis was performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to screen out differential proteins that changed more than 1.5 times. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to verify the quantitative differential protein expression (n = 30). Measurement data were compared by paired sample t-test. Results: The average particle concentration of the extracted exosomes was 2.2×10(9)/ml, and the average size was (107 ± 52) nm, which was consistent with the theoretical value of plasma exosome size, proving that the plasma exosomes were successfully extracted. Proteomics results showed that before and after MgIG treatment in chronic hepatitis B patients, a total of 153 differentially expressed proteins were screened, including 85 up-regulated and 68 down-regulated proteins. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results showed that compared with the MgIG before and after treatment group of chronic hepatitis B patients, the differences in the concentrations of hepatocyte growth factor activator and hepatocyte growth factor like protein in plasma exosomes were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Hepatocyte growth factor activator concentration in the plasma exosomes before and after MgIG treatment group was (45.9 ± 9.4) µg/ml and (13.9 ± 2.0) µg/ml, respectively, and it was down-regulated by about 3 times. Hepatocyte growth factor-like protein concentration in the plasma exosomes before and after MgIG treatment group was (23.4 ± 4.9) µg/ml and (13.8 ± 2.2) µg/ml, respectively, and it was down-regulated by about 2 times. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results had consistency with the proteomics results. Conclusion: This study successfully screened the differential proteomic of plasma exosomes before and after MgIG treatment in chronic hepatitis B, and provided experimental basis for studying the molecular mechanism of MgIG treatment for chronic hepatitis B.

RESUMO

Recent observations [A. Pustogow et al., Nature (London) 574, 72 (2019).NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-019-1596-2] of a drop of the ^{17}O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) Knight shift in the superconducting state of Sr_{2}RuO_{4} challenged the popular picture of a chiral odd-parity paired state in this compound. Here we use polarized neutron scattering (PNS) to show that there is a 34±6% drop in the magnetic susceptibility at the Ru site below the superconducting transition temperature. We measure at lower fields H∼1/3H_{c2} than a previous PNS study allowing the suppression to be observed. The PNS measurements show a smaller susceptibility suppression than NMR measurements performed at similar field and temperature. Our results rule out the chiral odd-parity d=z[over ^](k_{x}±ik_{y}) state and are consistent with several recent proposals for the order parameter including even-parity B_{1g} and odd-parity helical states.

RESUMO

Objective: To set up a prediction scoring system for the hypoxemia in infants with Pierre Robin sequence after weaning and evaluate its clinical value. Methods: Data of consecutive patients from November 2016 to June 2019, who underwent mandibular distraction osteogenesis in Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, were retrospectively analyzed (n=148). All the cases were divided into two groups according to the appearance of hypoxemia after weaning. They were randomly divided into the derivation cohorc (2/3,n=100) and the validation cohort (1/3,n=48). Single factor and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to select the independent risk factors related to hypoxemia and establish a prediction model. A prediction scoring system was developed in accordance with assigning of the value of each variable ß in the model. Internal verification of scoring system by validation population. Data of consecutive patients from July 2019 to November 2019, who underwent mandibular distraction osteogenesis, were prospectively analyzed (n=26). The diagnostic accuracy were conducted to evaluate the clinical value of the scoring system. Results: The logistic regression demonstrated that age at operation, pulmonary infection and the length of distraction less than 5 mm at weaning were the independent risk factors for hypoxemia. The P value of logistic regression model in Hosmer and Lemeshow goodness of fit test was 0.848, and a prediction scoring system was established accordingly. The area under the ROC curve of the scoring system was 0.890, and the optimum critical value was 53. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy of the model were 78.6%(11/14),86.1%(74/86), 85.0%(85/100) respectively. The predictive effectiveness of the scoring system in the retrospective validation population was similar to that in the modeling population. 26 patients were included in the prospective analysis. The area under ROC curve of the scoring system was 0.870. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 80.0%(5/6),95.0%(20/21), 96.1%(25/26) respectively. Conclusion: The prediction scoring system established in the study are efficacious for the hypoxemia in infants with Pierre Robin sequence after weaning.

RESUMO

Triplet pairing in Sr_{2}RuO_{4} was initially suggested based on the hypothesis of strong ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Using polarized inelastic neutron scattering, we accurately determine the full spectrum of spin fluctuations in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. Besides the well-studied incommensurate magnetic fluctuations, we do find a sizable quasiferromagnetic signal, quantitatively consistent with all macroscopic and microscopic probes. We use this result to address the possibility of magnetically driven triplet superconductivity in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. We conclude that, even though the quasiferromagnetic signal is stronger and sharper than previously anticipated, spin fluctuations alone are not enough to generate a triplet state strengthening the need for additional interactions or an alternative pairing scenario.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Prolactinoma is the most commonly seen secretory tumor of pituitary glands, which accounts for approximately up to 40% of total pituitary adenomas. Due to its high drug resistance, dopamine agonist, such as bromocriptine, has limited effect on the treatment of patients with prolactinoma. Recent discoveries have revealed that multiple miRNAs were involved in regulating drug resistance. In this research, we explored the relationship between miR-145-5p expression as well as bromocriptine sensitivity both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: To study the role of miR-145-5p in drug resistance of prolactinoma, the expression levels of miR-145-5p in bromocriptine-resistant prolactinoma cell line MMQ/BRC and its parental cell line MMQ cells, 24 bromocriptine-resistant as well as eight sensitive clinical samples were measured by qRT-PCR. Moreover, CCK8, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence were performed to identify the biological characteristics of MMQ/BRC and MMQ. TPT1 was predicted as a direct target gene of miR-145-5p by bioinformatic methods. In addition, qRT-PCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression level of TPT1 in clinical specimens and cell lines. Xenograft mouse model was constructed to analyze whether miR-145-5p could reverse bromocriptine resistance in prolactinoma in vivo. RESULTS: In our study, bromocriptine-resistant prolactinoma clinical samples and cell line had decreased miR-145-5p levels and expressed high levels of TPT1 compared with their sensitive counterparts. Bioinformatic methods and our preliminary dual luciferase reporter assay were utilized to elucidate that TPT1 was a direct target gene of miR-145-5p. Furthermore, introducing miR-145-5p mimic into MMQ cells led to a decrease of IC50 along with upregulation of TPT1; nevertheless, transfecting the corresponding inhibitor into MMQ cells resulted in an upregulation of IC50 as well as reduction of TPT1. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our findings elucidated the role of miR-145-5p as an important regulator of drug resistance in prolactinoma by controlling TPT1, and implicated the potential application of miR-145-5p in cancer therapy as well.

RESUMO

Weyl (WSMs) evolve from Dirac semimetals in the presence of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or space-inversion symmetry. The WSM phases in TaAs-class materials and photonic crystals are due to the loss of space-inversion symmetry. For TRS-breaking WSMs, despite numerous theoretical and experimental efforts, few examples have been reported. In this Article, we report a new type of magnetic semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y, z < 0.1) with nearly massless relativistic fermion behaviour (m∗ =  0.04 - 0.05m0, where m0 is the free-electron mass). This material exhibits a ferromagnetic order for 304 K  <  T  <  565 K, but a canted antiferromagnetic order with a ferromagnetic component for T  <  304 K. The combination of relativistic fermion behaviour and ferromagnetism in Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 offers a rare opportunity to investigate the interplay between relativistic fermions and spontaneous TRS breaking.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: The structure of heterogeneous forests has consequences for their biophysical environment. Variations in the local climate significantly affect tree physiological processes. We hypothesize that forest structure also alters tree root elongation and longevity through temporal and spatial variations in soil temperature and water potential. Methods: We installed rhizotrons in paired vegetation communities of closed forest (tree islands) and open patches (canopy gaps), along a soil temperature gradient (elevations of 1400, 1700 and 2000 m) in a heterogeneous mixed forest. We measured the number of growing tree roots, elongation and mortality every month over 4 years. Key Results: The results showed that the mean daily root elongation rate (RER) was not correlated with soil water potential but was significantly and positively correlated with soil temperature between 0 and 8 °C only. The RER peaked in spring, and a smaller peak was usually observed in the autumn. Root longevity was dependent on altitude and the season in which roots were initiated, and root diameter was a significant factor explaining much of the variability observed. The finest roots usually grew faster and had a higher risk of mortality in gaps than in closed forest. At 2000 m, the finest roots had a higher risk of mortality compared with the lower altitudes. Conclusions: The RER was largely driven by soil temperature and was lower in cold soils. At the treeline, ephemeral fine roots were more numerous, probably in order to compensate for the shorter growing season. Differences in soil climate and root dynamics between gaps and closed forest were marked at 1400 and 1700 m, but not at 2000 m, where canopy cover was more sparse. Therefore, heterogeneous forest structure and situation play a significant role in determining root demography in temperate, montane forests, mostly through impacts on soil temperature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between spicy flavor, spicy food frequency, and general obesity in Chinese rural adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 15,683 subjects (5907 males, 9776 females) aged 35-74 years from the RuralDiab Study were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Analysis of covariance was used to determine the differences of participant characteristics across body mass index (BMI) categories. Logistic regression yielded adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for obesity associated with the level of spicy flavor and frequency of spicy food intake. A meta-analysis was conducted to validate the result of the cross-sectional study. The crude and standardized prevalence of obesity were 16.78% and 17.57%, respectively. Compared with No spicy flavor, the adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of Mild, Middle, and Heavy spicy flavor for obesity were 1.232 (1.117-1.359), 1.463 (1.290-1.659), and 1.591 (1.293-1.958), respectively (Ptrend < 0.001). Similarly, compared with no spicy food consumption, the adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of 1 or 2 days/week, 3-5 days/week, and 6 or 7 days/week were 1.097 (0.735-1.639), 1.294 (0.932-1.796), and 1.250 (1.025-1.525), respectively (Ptrend = 0.026). The point estimate and 95% CI of mean BMI difference between the spicy food consuming group and spicy food non-consuming group was 0.37 (95% CI: 0.30-0.44) in the meta-analysis. CONCLUSION: The data indicated that spicy flavor and spicy food frequency were positively associated with general obesity in Chinese rural populations.

RESUMO

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Sr_{2}RuO_{4} determine the spectral weight of the nesting induced magnetic fluctuations across the superconducting transition. There is no observable change at the superconducting transition down to an energy of ∼0.35 meV, which is well below the 2Δ values reported in several tunneling experiments. At this and higher energies magnetic fluctuations clearly persist in the superconducting state. Only at energies below ∼0.3 meV can evidence for partial suppression of spectral weight in the superconducting state be observed. This strongly suggests that the one-dimensional bands with the associated nesting fluctuations do not form the active, highly gapped bands in the superconducting pairing in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}.

RESUMO

Increasing evidence indicated that metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) acted as a key regulator in the proliferation and invasion of several cancers. However, the function of MALAT1 in the development of cholangiocarcinoma has not been experimentally established. In the present study, the expression levels of MALAT1 in cholangiocarcinoma cell lines were detected by quantitative real-time PCR. The effects of MALAT1 knockdown on the cell proliferation and invasion of cholangiocarcinoma cells were detected with Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation assay and Trans-well assay, respectively. The expressions of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins (E-cadherin, Vimentin) were evaluated to discover whether the process of EMT was involved. We also evaluated the expression of phos-phatidylinositol-3-kinase/serine/threonine kinase (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway proteins (PI3K, p-PI3K, Akt, p-Akt) to determine the associated molecular mechanism. And we discovered that MALAT1 was up-regulated in cholangiocarcinoma cancer cells. CCK-8, colony formation and trans-well assay showed that the proliferation and invasion of QBC-939 and RBE with MALAT1 knockdown were inhibited. Moreover, MALAT1 could promote EMT in cholangiocarcinoma cells. In addition, MALAT1 may activate PI3K/Akt pathway. These results indicated that MALAT1 promoted cholangiocarcinoma cell proliferation and invasion. The effects of MALAT1 on cholangiocarcinoma cells might be through activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. These investigations may facilitate a better understanding of MALAT1 and it might be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma.
